McGowan’s Musings
This was definitely the hottest edition of
the Reeperbahn Festival yet, not only in
terms of undeniably fast paced action in
the conference rooms, at the many parties,
in the clubs and bars and on the streets of
Hamburg, but the weather (here I go again!)
was holding on to summer. It was much
warmer than you’d expect and as a result a
couple of us VIP people, me for one, brought
back heavy flu like colds, so if these musings
are shorter than usual (who said ‘that’s a
relief!’..?) that’s my excuse.
The Festival has reached that stage, which
I well remember first encountering at
SXSW when the Austin event was about
the same age as the Hamburg event is
now, whereby many of the breakfast
conversations overheard are just as much
about what people didn’t see, as what they
did. But with Germany’s largest club festival
presenting more than 600 wide-ranging
events in over 70 venues, plus an extensive
arts programme, and of course the panels,
interviews and presentations which made
up the business platform, you’d have to be
pretty superhuman to take in everything!
Oh, and then there were the parties – more
than ever, competing with other and with the
conference programme – well done those
stout hearted and progressive people who
eschewed the free beer for free thinking,
informative discussion and debate! The
results of the Scottish referendum came
through while we were in Hamburg and I
was relieved to hear that the country in which
my parents were born has elected, albeit by
a narrow margin to stay with the Union, with
the state of things elsewhere in the world we
can do with as much unity as we can get!
As the music industry, or perhaps better
said, as discussed in the Power of Numbers
panel that I was fortunate enough to chair,
‘the music economy’ continues to evolve,
Reeperbahn and other events provide a
forum and a growing platform for not just the
international music business and culture, but
also the wider scope of the digital industry
and the many ever closer related creative
industries. The live industry, returning to the
what may be considered the core business of
VIP, and you, our readers, is also broadening
its scope, with festivals for instance covering
an increasing number of entertainment
genres, and touring recognised as an ever
more important vehicle for the spreading of
music culture and more.
I realise that I’m sounding a lot more serious
than usual, it must be the flu! But also there
are some serious but encouraging items in
this month’s news, a German initiative to
allow promoters to earn from the ongoing
exploitation of shows that they were
responsible for, more UK investment in
touring, successful bids for EU funding by live
music projects – things are getting busy!
Talking of busy, October is a full month for
trade events, kicking off with Vienna Waves
and its sister event in Bratislava from the 1st to
the 4th, then Amsterdam Dance Event, Music
and Media in Tampere, Finland and MaMA in
Paris all share 15th to 18th, choices, choices!
We’ll be reporting back from Vienna,
Bratislava and Paris, much as we’d like to fit
them all in!
So, as I head for the hot drinks and the
medication, Ladies and Gentlemen – The
News!

According to new figures from trade body, UK Music, the UK music
industry’s economic contribution to the country increased by 9%
to £3.8 billion last year, with the large part being revenues from live
music and songwriting. Chief executive Jo Dipple hailed the growth,
pointing out the rise in music’s contribution - known as Gross Value
Added (GVA) - showed “how important an industry we are to the UK
economy”.
But continuing problems were highlighted as she urged the
Government to do more to protect copyright and educate young
people about paying for music and the problems of piracy. There
was also a call for Google and other web giants to give priority to
licensed, online music services in search results and better access to
bank finance for small music businesses was called for.
Dipple said: “The young, bearded kids in the pub, making a racket
on a Friday night, might just turn out to generate more revenue
for Her Majesty’s Treasury than a car manufacturer. But they need
support to get there.”
According to UK Music’s report, the industry supports 111,000 full-
time jobs and one in eight albums sold worldwide are by British
artists from Adele to Ellie Goulding.
Dipple said UK Music wanted to help government “develop policies
as good as the music we produce”.
The PRS For Music Foundation has announced details of more artists
who have been awarded funding from the Arts Council backed
Momentum initiative.
The successful applicants are:
Amplify Dot (for the release of a new album)
Dems (for the marketing and promotion of a debut album)
Femme (for the release of a third single)
Josephine Oniyama (for a second album)
Låpsley (for the release of three EPs, touring and live setup)
PINS (for the recording and release of a second album)
Public Service Broadcasting (for the recording of a second album)
Solomon Grey (for the recording of a debut album and promotion)
The announcement also gave the dates of two new deadlines for
further Momentum Fund applications, one earlier this month and
one on October 28.

Promoters CollectingSociety Approved inGermanyAllan McGowan [email protected]
Professor Jens Michow of the German
Promoters Association, BDV was able to
release the following interesting and no
doubt very welcome news for promoters
in Germany and beyond, during the ‘Power
of Numbers’ panel during the Reeperbahn
Conference:
From now on promoters will also be able to
claim payment as a result of agreed shares
of so called ‘neighbouring rights’ for any
form of commercial exploitation of their
services, e.g. the TV broadcast of a show,
which they organized and promoted. They
will now be able to claim a share of ‘the pot’
in addition to composers, artists and record
companies.
After 10 years of preparatory work, the
Society for the Observation of Organisers’
Rights (Gesellschaft zur Wahrnehmung
von Veranstalterrechten, GWVR) has also
been approved as a collecting society by
the German Patent and Trade Mark Office
(Deutsches Patent und Markenamt, DPMA)
in Hamburg. In the future, they will always
assert the claims of their members when
concert recordings, be it sound or picture
recordings, are played on radio, television,
YouTube or Spotify. The GWVR is a 100%
subsidiary of the German Federal Association
of Concert Organisers (Bundesverband
der Veranstaltungswirtschaft, bdv), the
professional body of German promoters,
artist managers and concert agencies.
“This means that for the first time there is a
collecting society in Germany that collects
royalties for promoters for the commercial
exploitation of live recordings legally
provided in § 81 UrhG (German Copyright
Act) and distribute these to those entitled,”
says GWVR CEO Dr. Johannes Ulbricht.
“However our work is only just beginning,
because now we will have to establish
rates and schemes of distribution with the
DPMA. According to Ulbricht, GEMA is to
be commissioned with the collection of the
interests.
All promoters based in the European Union
can become a member of the GWVR.
Not only can German promoters claim for
events in Germany via the GWVR but also
for events abroad. “After a protracted and
difficult approval procedure, with the GWVR
the conditions have for the first time been
created to ensure that promoters are not
merely dependent on the fleeting success
of their concerts but can also participate
in receiving the fruits of their labours in
the long term,” says Prof. Jens Michow,
managing president of the bdv.

The Liveurope Platform is a European initiative gathering popular
concert venues established in various countries across the continent.
All members of this Platform share one goal : the promotion of
European music, and more particularly of emerging acts.
The key mission of the Liveurope initiative is to support live music
venues in their efforts to foster cross-border circulation of emerging
European music artists, through the development of a European
quality label. The ‘Liveurope label’ will identify European concert
halls which are active in the promotion of upcoming European
talent, in order to create lasting programming effects.
Thanks to an incentive financial support mechanism co-funded by
the European Commission’s ‘Creative Europe’ Programme, these
concert halls will be encouraged to carry out a sustained collective
effort with a view to increasing the share of upcoming European
music acts in their artistic programmes.
In this perspective, the Liveurope Platform aims to build a wider
and more diverse audience for European music, and to fully unleash
the potential of our continent’s immense artistic potential. The
Platform’s ambition is to establish itself as a beacon of excellence
in the field of live music in Europe. This initiative is indeed designed
not only to help music artists developing their careers, but also to
develop genuine enthusiasm among music fans, and to become a
true European success story.
Besides the financial mechanism and the promotion efforts, a
variety of events will be organised in the framework of this initiative,
such as an annual conference, with a view to strongly embed the
Liveurope label within the European live music sector. The ambition
of the Platform is to attract an ever-growing number of participating
concert halls all across the continent.
Liveurope will strive to raise awareness about European values
and cultures among the general public, the media, and live music
professionals. As such, the aim of this initiative is to contribute,
through live music, to the development of a genuine European
cultural sphere.
The Platform is coordinated from Brussels (BE) by internationally
renowned concert venue Ancienne Belgique As of 2014, the other
members of the Platform are:
Three music projects that have been successful in gaining funding after applying to the European Union’s Creative Europe initiative were presented at Reeperbahn, following panels that discussed the place of popular music within the European Commission’s plans for Creative Industries. Besides Liveurope featured here, Michal Brenner of the Meetfactory in the Czech Republic, and Julia Osada of the European Music Council explained the plans for their long term projects – we’ll look at those again in a future issue. In the meantime the multi venue project fronted by Fabien Miclet at Brussel’s Ancienne Belgique involves people and places quite familiar to VIP News and our readers…

The Association of Independent Festivals CongressAllan McGowan [email protected]
GuilFest Goes into InsolvencyAllan McGowan [email protected]
The AIF has announced more details about
its Festival Congress, which will take place in
Cardiff on 17 and 18 Oct.
Confirmed to speak are Southbank Centre
Artistic Director Jude Kelly, Welsh minister
Edwina Hart, and a number of festival reps,
including Rob da Bank (Bestival), Martin
Elbourne (Glastonbury/The Great Escape)
and Ivan Millivojev (Exit Festival).
Commenting on all that, da Bank, as both
panellist and AIF co-founder, told reporters:
“As the hour rapidly approaches, all at AIF
are absolutely buzzing about the Congress.
These latest announcements show that
we’re bringing the cream of the independent
festival world together in Cardiff. The stage
is set for an excellent conference and we’ll be
celebrating a big season that has seen more
sold-out AIF festivals than ever before”.
More info here.
Sadly the future of GuilFest, the ‘family
oriented’ three day event first held in 1992
in Stoke Park in the City of Guildford in the
UK County of Surrey, is in doubt once again
with the company behind the festival going
into insolvency. The local newspaper Get
Surrey has reported that artists, suppliers
and others involved in this year’s edition
have still to be paid.
Festival organiser Tony Scott is a well known
and well liked character in the independent
festival business, he has confirmed that
insolvency practitioners had been called
in, with a number of people connected to
the festival still without payment. Amongst
others The Boomtown Rats, The Enemy and
Kool & The Gang played over three days of
good weather. However weather forecasts
had been bad and Scott has blamed this
and a lack of organisational time. The event
was only confirmed with permission from
Guildford Borough Council in February
following a campaign to bring the event
back following its collapse due to poor
ticket sales in 2012, leading to the collapse
of the operating company with debts of
£300,000. Magic Summer Live made a one-
off appearance in 2013.
I have a particularly fond memory of Guilfest
– having gone there 20 years or so ago,
with the man famous for ‘Fire’ and ‘The
Crazy World of’, Arthur Brown, Ian Grant,
manager of Big Country, and The Stranglers
at one time, and my son who was I think
10 at the time. Peter Green, the founder
of Fleetwood Mac, and B.B. King’s favourite
white blues player was making a return to
the stage after many years away beset with
well documented mental problems with The
Splinter Group. Having always been a huge
fan I was very keen to see if he had retained
his incredible skills, and as it happened I was
not the only one, just before Peter went on
stage a Mercedes tore into the back stage
area throwing up dust, and a man in a wooly
cap leapt out to grab Peter by the shoulder
wishing him luck and saying how much he
was looking forward to seeing him play
again - it was Eric Clapton, and post gig, I
sat down with Arthur, Peter and Eric and my
son, who, at my urging of course, got the
autographs on a napkin, which disappeared
soon after, but miraculously reappeared last
year! I’ve also got a couple of photos to
prove it all! - Ed.

How long will it be before we no longer
have a festival season, just year round
events? Just to make sure that we have
something to do- or to write about – in
the Winter, Primavera Club will present a
large number of acts in Barcelona from
31st October to the 2nd November.
The organisers say that these acts will
represent what Primavera Sound’s
organisers are betting on for the
near future. Over the weekend 44
international and local bands will
perform in 5 different venues, all in the
centre of Barcelona: Apolo, La [2] de
Apolo, Teatre Principal, El Teatro Latino
and Sidecar.
It is expected that visitors from England,
the USA, Australia and Finland will come
to the Catalan capital for the first time
for Primavera Club 2014. The Primavera
Club 2014 full festival ticket costs 25
and gives access to all the concerts
programmed during the festival. The day
tickets for each of the three days (Friday
31st October, Saturday 1st November and
Sunday 2nd November) will be available
at 15 and give access to all the concerts
programmed on the day for which they
are bought (access is subject to the
limitations of capacity of each venue).

Eurosonic Noorderslag has proudly revealed the fifth results of The
European Talent Exchange Programme 2014 (ETEP) and the second
Central Eastern European Exchange Program (CEETEP) results of
2014. These results reflect the number of shows of European acts at
European festivals. Both these programmes are important platforms
for promoting new European artists.
It’s interesting to note a correlation between the ETEP results and the
recently announced Mercury Music Prize shortlist. The top scoring
acts Jungle and Royal Blood with 15 and 14 festival bookings
respectively have both been nominated.
Following closely behind with 9 festival shows each are Hozier from
Ireland and Denmark’s Mo. Germany’s Milky Chance helped put
German acts on the map this year with 8 bookings just ahead of
Birth of Joy from Holland. George Ezra from the UK, Swiss band
Kadebostany and Pional from Spain all follow with 7 festival show
bookings. A full list of results can be viewed below.
ETEP Results:Top-scoring countries / top scoring act:
Great Britain, 20 artists, Royal Blood, Jungle
The Netherlands, 17 artists, Birth of Joy
Ireland, 8 artists, Hozier
Sweden, 8 artists, Alice Bowman
Germany, 6 artists, Milky Chance
Austria, 6 Artists, 3 acts with 2 festival bookings
What the artists say:
Royal Blood (GB): ‘’Eurosonic Noorderslag was our first European
show so we’ll always remember it. A very important and well
organised event at the start of the year, highly recommend it for
new artists’’.
Kadebostany (CH): ‘’Our show at Eurosonic was a success and
solidified our reputation as a live band, it helped us reach many
professionals of the scene at once. For a band like us who tour a lot,
this showcase was like a ‘’shortcut’’ to reach influental people in the
live world who didn’t know of us yet’’.
MØ (DK): ‘’Eurosonic Noorderslag is a great, and cool festival to
play. Especially for up comers! It has helped me two years in a row
getting attention from cool media and bookers from badass festivals
in Europe. When you’re there you feel the excitement for new music
amongst the people participating in the festival no matter if it’s the
guests, the scouts or the artists’’.

At CEETEP ’13, Fruzsina Szep of Hungary’s
Sziget Festival identified the main goals of
the meetings as the discussion of common
challenges, to learn from each other and
most importantly to get to know each
other. These goals certainly still applied
to the 2014 programme. Having a good
network, as in all international enterprises,
is essential in the music business. It is still
an acknowledged fact that the Western
European music industry lies 30 to 40 year
ahead of that of Eastern Europe – apart from
the Festivals, which have seen remarkable
growth in professionalism, not to mention
audiences!
The continuing aim of CEETEP is the building
of a solid system behind the Eastern
European musicians to help them further.
The Programme has been developed with
the intention of linking artist managers,
media and festivals in order to build this
system together. This will take time but
there is no doubt that a great start has
already been made! CEETEP artists have
had the opportunity to play in front of
Western audiences and professionals at the
Eurosonic event in Groningen, the home
of the ETEP Programme, initiated by The
Noorderslag Foundation and their partners.

CEETEP ’14: Workshops at EXIT FESTIVALThis summer Exit again hosted the third set of meetings and workshops concerned with the development of the aims and purposes of the EU funded Central and Eastern European Talent Exchange Programme. CEETEP follows on from the great work done in Western Europe by the European Talent Exchange Programme ETEP in the development of artists, education aimed at encouraging best business practice, and the instigation and progression of cooperation between festivals and established professionals.

This cooperation will continue to help more
CEE artist perform across borders within
Central Eastern Europe, and by playing
Eurosonic Noorderslag they participate in
ETEP and have the opportunity to reach the
whole of Europe and beyond.
This year’s meetings were again attended,
hosted and overseen by ETEP and CEETEP
co-founder Ruud Berends, Fruszina Szep of
the Sziget Festival, Vladimir Vodalov of AAA
Production/EXIT Festival and Allan McGowan
of VIP News / IQ Magazine. Training and
discussion sessions were organised and
presented by Stuart Worthington of training
organisation Manchester Music and MMF
Training, with the participation of Jake
Beaumont Nesbitt of the International Music
Managers Forum (IMMF), artist manager
Guna Zucika (Latvia) and Adam Lewis of The
Planetary Group (US).
Stuart Worthington is well known in
the UK and Europe for his training
programmes and tutorials on all
aspects of the music business. These
are his comments on his first set of
presentations in Eastern Europe:
The events we took part in were extremely
well managed. The venues excellent, all
personnel were efficient and friendly,
facilities were great and everything ran as
smoothly as one could hope for. A hugely
enjoyable and highly professional experience.
As regards the participants: as explained
to us (and as expected with such events),
the depth of knowledge and experience
amongst those attending was indeed wide-
ranging, from experienced and successful
professionals through to those to whom
information about international markets
& industry practice was completely new.
A clear objective of our delivery was to
operate at all levels simultaneously in order
to be of practical value to all attending.
It appears that this was achieved, as
participation & attendance were good
throughout the whole of the two days
and during the four intensive sessions
we delivered (always an indication of the
level of interest in, and practicality of,
the information and contacts provided -
especially when there is a full-blown festival
going on at the same time!).
The sessions proved to be as interactive as
we had hoped they would be - questions
and issues were raised by those attending to
help clarify roles & responsibilities; process &
time lines; value chains & revenue streams;
strategic options available & decisions to be
made: i.e. those attending did not allow any
information provided or opinions expressed
not to come under scrutiny!
Plus, the feedback we received from
participants during the speed meeting
sessions on Day 2 was very positive indeed.
The delivery format, timetable and
programme structure seemed to have
worked well. As with any “content creator/
developer” I always look for opportunities
to improve, and based on this first visit
and the delivery experience, I have several
thoughts and ideas as to how future (CE)
ETEP Business Support Programmes may
be enhanced in order to be of even greater
and immediately practical value to those
attending in terms of bespoke content. For
example (via early identification of individual
questions and areas requiring support,
plus local/regional issues to be addressed
in the context of international “norms”),
together with follow-up workshop-style
development activity or business support
services for those who attended this year
- should such a Programme of events be
scheduled for delivery in 2015 or beyond.
There are definitely opportunities to develop
specific briefs for future programmes aimed
at facilitating targeted trade development
objectives as well as learning outcomes &
network development opportunities.
I am a fan of (CE)TEP, EXIT & Eurosonic!
Adam Lewis works throughout the US,
Europe and other territories including
China, his Company provides artist
development services in all areas of
the music business. His reactions to this
year’s CEETEP sessions were as follows:
I really enjoyed CEETEP this year. I feel like
the program is really growing and that
the managers/attendee’s are really there
to learn and build their business. The
quality of questions from the audience was
excellent and I think that that was mostly
due to the wonderful presentation that
Stuart produced. Stu really presented a
wonderful overview of the entire industry in
the two days. I think that it really gave the
new managers something to think about
in respect to their bands. Judging from
the follow up that I am getting from folks
this week, they also listened and are really
looking to get their bands moving.
These were the impressions of some of the
regional artist representatives that attended
the sessions:

This was my 2nd CEETEP conference, I
attended my first one in 2012 as member
of my previous band Petrol, last year I
was not an official participant, but I came
with my good friend Boris Vlastelica from
Repetitor during the “Speed meetings”.
Compared to the 2012 CEETEP conference
I have to say that this year was much more
useful for me. I feel that the presenters
Stuart and Jake were really well prepared.
The things we heard from them are “first
hand” experiences, told in direct, straight
to the point style, but also told in a way
so that we as participants can relate to it,
learn from it and use them in our music
lives. I feel that the MMF Training document
really completes the 360 degrees of music
business circle.
I have heard a lot of this things in the
past, or had direct experience with music
labels, publishers, organizing tours etc,
but attending the session showed me a
different perspective on things I already
knew in some form, opened up a new
space for me, inspired me to move forward
and become better in things I do.
The second aspect of CEETEP I really like is
meeting different people and networking. I
feel that it was on the same level as CEETEP
2012, which was also great in that aspect.
I enjoyed the first dinner, unfortunately
could not come to the second day dinner,
because I had a soundcheck at that time,
my new band Ti was performing on Friday.
Justyna Dominik – Artgrupa (Poland)
I’m a manager of two bands from Poland:
Laki Lan and Sorry Boys. For me the
workshops were very helpful. I can describe
it in 3 points: - I found out what I have to
do to get my bands to function better. The
division which was drawn on the board and
discussion of every part of it allowed me to
sort out some things and now I know what I
should be focused on in the cases of Laki Lan
and Sorry Boys. I was reassured also in the
things that I do well (knowing polish market)
like promotion of the album, concert, in
which order has to be done to give the best
effect - All this knowledge that you gave us
has allowed me to prepare a new plan which
now i will try to realize, I hope successfully.
My bands do well on the polish market, and
now we would like to expand the business
to other countries so it’s important for me
that I could meet and listen to people who
have experience in this subject.
My own impressions were that all of us
who attended these CEETEP meetings,
both educators, panellists and delegates
learned a lot about the present and future
situation for the music business in Eastern
Europe. It is obvious that both artists and
their managements are ambitious and
determined to broaden their horizons and
the information and positive advice made
available by the CEETEP programme has and
will help more artists from the region grow
their local audiences and break through
into neighbouring territories and eventually
Western markets.

VIPNEWS > SEPTEMBER 2014
The news that the current edition of the
music convention Berlin Music Week was
to be the last came pretty much, or almost,
out of the blue.
Berlin is a hot spot for politics. Berlin Music
Week was originally inaugurated to replace
the failed attempt to re-locate Popkomm
in Berlin. When Popkomm was cancelled
shortly before its 2009 edition, plans were
developed to launch a successor event
Already this was shaping up as everything
other than a success story..
The first edition of the Berlin Music Week
(BMW) took place in 2010. In fact some
editions might well have been called Berlin
Mitte Week in reference to the Berlin Mitte
area in which it took place. Popkomm,
once an established international brand,
previously attracted more awareness
from visitors from abroad than BMW.
Nevertheless, the organising team behind
BMW tried its best and over the years
managed to improve the settings and the
concept for this trade event.
However, politics often go alongside some
pitfalls. And in Berlin in particular there
are plenty of them. But let’s cut the story
short. The departure of BMW has been
initiated by the former promoter, when the
subsidies of 500.000 Euro per year from
the Berlin senate controlled Kulturprojekte
GmbH were withdrawn and handed over
to the Musicboard Berlin.
This organisation receives subsidies of 1
million Euro per year and was launched
in January 2013. As usual for the launch
of such a public body, the inauguration
process of Musicboard Berlin was
politically properly handled. There have
been hearings, experts discussions and
certainly a well conducted political agenda
to manage the administrative burdens to
get this board up and running.
Katja Lucker is familiar with public
administrative handlings and was
appointed in the beginning as managing
director of the board. She was involved
in the venue Kulturbrauerei, has a degree
as an actor and previously was part of
the creative economy department of the
culture project Ruhr2010, the prestigious
culture capital project of the Ruhrdistrict in
that year. Apparently the perfect candidate
to handle such a board, supposed to have
a structure similar to the Medienboard
Berlin-Brandenburg. Actually a good
idea, but unfortunately perhaps not when
equipped with a much lower budget than
that of the film and media sector.
Nevertheless these types of bodies needs
spin doctors, such as Musicboard Berlin’s
Björn Böhning. In a press conference
regarding the launch of the successor event
for BMW entitled Pop=Kultur, Böhning
ventured the opinion that from his point of
view the BMW had been too “arbitrary”.
BMW apparently was among others too
de-centralised, an aspect that in terms of
its concerts-satellites such as the Berlin
Festival and the showcase-part “First We
Take Berlin” seems in fact to be correct.

The congress program of BMW in recent
years took place at the Postbahnhof.
According to the new plans for Pop=Kultur,
all parts of this event should take place in the
Berghain, a well-known techno-discotheque.
The Berghain is furthermore known for
its strict door policy, almost as strict as the
prominent fat cat-discotheque in P1 in
Munich. At least it offers seven locations
within the entire location and as such is
able to accommodate all ingredients of
Pop=Kultur. Böhning also wishes, according
to an article in the newspaper “Welt”, a
more integral cooperation of the major label
Universal within Pop=Kultur. Besides this
Pop=Kultur was supposed to become also a
meeting place for mind stimulating innovative
encounters such as, “Pop-Queen meets city-
sociologists” and “Techno-producers meets
neurobiologists”. Certainly one of the most
exciting encounters at this convention was
perhaps maybe the one with the doormen of
the Berghain who have very strict standards
governing who is deemed eligible to enter
this location.
Björn Döring, the former project leader of
BMW and his team (except one) have been
dismissed and won’t be in charge for this
whatever-comes-next-project in Berlin. Until
now also no media reports have been spotted
that questioned the sense in dropping the
name of a music conference that for five
editions received subsidies of 2.5 million
Euro. Also dumped has been the relationship
with the organisers of the Berlin Festival and
First We Take Berlin. At least no official news
regarding this network of Festival Republic
as the main stakeholder in Berlin Festival and
its business partner Melt Booking has been
announced yet.
Well, let’s at least look forward to these
kind of knowledge-transfers opportunities
at Pop=Kultur like “Techno-producers
meets neurobiologists”. In the meantime the
question remains what the web-address of
this event will be...

VIPNEWS > SEPTEMBER 2014
One of the most widely discussed news
items at this year’s edition of Reeperbahn
Festival was the Friday, September 19
announcement that FKP Scorpio had
expanded its Scandinavian business
activities; this certainly caused quite a buzz.
This news includes a couple of components
that combine to re-design the concert
business landscape in Scandinavia. FKP
Scorpio Sweden AB, a subsidiary of the
German company FKP Scorpio becomes a
stakeholder of Fullsteam Agency in Finland,
while Juha Kyyrö, the founder of Fullsteam
Agency becomes a stake holder of FKP
Scorpio Sweden. He has furthermore been
appointed as the managing director of
this branch that will oversee all business
activities in Sweden.
In recent years Kyyrö gathered various
industry awards for his efforts and is also
internationally well known for being one of
the leading forces in the concert industry in
Scandinavia. For Fullsteam, the deal is limited
towards the company’s live department.
Last year Fullsteam Agency produced
around 1.100 concerts and gained revenue
of 8.5 million Euro. Besides the concert arm
of Fullsteam, the other parts of the business
activities of this company include a label, a
publishing company, a management and a
merchandising division as well the operation
of a rehearsal centre.
As well as this move, FKP Scorpio announced
that it has agreed a partnership with the
Provinssirock Festival in Finland. And as if all
this is not enough it will launch a festival in
Denmark called Tinderbox. All three festivals
will take place on the same dates and
therewith are only a week of the Roskilde
Festival. The promoter of Tinderbox will be
newly founded company Tinderbox ApS,
with the two Danish companies Down the
Drain Holding ApS and MKS Holding and
FKP Scorpio as a third stakeholder.
The owner of MKS Holding is Mats
Sörensen, the two stakeholders of Down
the Drain are Brian Nielsen and Flemming
Myllerup. Northside ApS, the company
behind the Northside Festival has Down the
Drain and Folkert Koopmans, the managing
director of FKP Scorpio as stake holders.
In a joint stake swap all mentioned parties
teamed up to provide both festivals with the
same stakeholder structure.
In addition thereto the capital stock for FKP
Scorpio Germany has been increased from
25,500 up to 1 million Euros. In a press
release FKP Scorpio MD Folkert Koopmans
is quoted as commenting, “The experience
we have gained in the Swedish and Danish
event market in recent years has been very
positive and has not only revealed the size
of the market potential in these music-loving
countries, but also the numerous synergies
afforded by the presence on the live
markets in several Nordic countries at the
same time. The partnership with Fullsteam
and the Provinssirock in Finland, as well as
the establishment of Tinderbox ApS and
the same-named festival in Denmark is
the logical continuation of our previous
activities in Northern Europe. I am very
happy to be able to work together with such
experienced partners as Juha Kyyrö and
Mads Sörensen in the future, and to be able
to expand on the successful cooperation
with Brian Nielsen and Flemming Myllerup
even further.”
Unsurprisingly the entire announcement
caused wide ranging awareness not only
in Scandinavia. Even festival promoters in
Switzerland told VIP News that they are
concerned about the festival-triple by FKP
Scorpio in Sweden as potential headliners
in that period will be more difficult to book
due to the market power of FKP Scorpio.

VIPNEWS > SEPTEMBER 2014
Four of the largest Danish festivals,
Roskilde, Smukfest (Skanderborg), Jelling
Musikfestival and Nibe Festival have
teamed up in joint protest against the plans
of two major booking agencies to promote
a new open air event in Denmark.
As written above the new festival Tinderbox
in Odense, is a joint promotion venture put
together by booking agencies Beatbox
and Skandinavian along with FKP Scorpio,
with offices in Germany and Sweden.
The Company also promotes the Danish
Northside Festival in partnership with Brian
Nielsen of Skandinavian.
The four Danish festivals maintain that
the two Danish booking agencies who
represent a wide range of leading Danish
acts including Tina Dickow, Mew, Nephew,
The Only Two, DAD and many more have
taken on conflicting roles and interests by
also becoming festival promoters.
The four Festivals have extended an
invitation to the artists to negotiate future
festival shows without the involvement of
their Beatbox and Skandinavian agents.
If this were to happen it would of course
result in financial losses for the agents.
Danish music magazine Gaffa reported
that the four festivals sent out a joint email
stating: “The Danish festival market is
rapidly evolving, and as promoters in the
live music industry we are challenged by
new players and new economy from the
outside. We now see two major booking
agencies, Skandinavian and Beatbox, with
a strong German capital partner backing
them, promoting several festivals in
Denmark in the future. This constellation
is to be expected amongst our direct
competitors in various sizes and corporate
structures in the future. We have no
problems with that. We live in a free world
where everyone can promote festivals,
and we see the current development as
an extension of the general development
of the festival market in Europe. On the
other hand, it is not appropriate for us
that our main competitors also work as
booking agents and possess knowledge
of the offers we make and what terms we
negotiate around any involvement of artists
at our events. And it is not acceptable that
those agents through negotiations, may
have a decisive influence on the artists we
intend to book for our festivals.”

for Live Nation SAS, Christof Huber - Director
of Open Air St Gallen / General secretary of

One of the topics for the live music sector
is a panel asking the question regarding the
economic models of festivals entitled as “Is
there Life Beyond subsidies?” . Mama looks
also into the subject regarding the topics
“World Music in popular music venues”
and if “Festivals are the new El Dorado for
artists?” or “New audiences, new tools for
festivals”. One subject that pretty much also
matters for festivals outside of France is a
panel on “Festivals, approaching regulations
that limit sound levels”.
There are plenty of more opportunities such
as networking and matchmaking sessions
and a focus on the music market of China.
Mama takes place in Paris from October 15-
17 and became in recent years to a hotspot
of talents and the French music industry
community. In particular due to the market
situation in France, where Paris is the main
gateway for international artists to enter
the French music market, Mama quickly
achieved a leading market place in France.
The number of international delegates has
risen each year and its entire setting with
some extraordinary good concert locations
in Montmatre and Pigalle have enabled
Mama to find its place within the landscape
of European music industry conventions.

CTs Eventim Launch Joint Venture with Stage Entertainment
for Holiday On Ice:
The deal needs still to be authorized by the German cartel office, but
once ratified the joint venture includes a 50 percent participation
between the CTS Eventim subsidy Medusa and the musical produc-
tion company Stage Entertainment for the Holiday On Ice shows in
Germany and France. The deal is supposed to deliver CTS Eventim
about 300.000 ticket sales. CTS Eventim furthermore became the
exclusive ticketing service provider of the XXXI Olympic Games and
XV Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. CTS Eventim won a tender
and is expected to sell around 9 million additional tickets in 2015
and 2016. The share price since August 25 went up from 20.93 to
22.96 Euro.
DEAG - Business As Usual:
There is still no news available on the new festival activities of DEAG
at the Nürburgring. Anyhow, the share price in the meantime went
up from 5.85 to 6.05 Euros.
Live Nation:
Since the last issue of VIP News Live Nation has in the meantime
issued several press releases about new tours, acquisitions and part-
nership agreements. One of these is the take over of Eventjoy, a
“Do It Yourself” (DIY) online platform to manage concerts. The
service also includes, beside ticketing functions, “social marketing
analytics, and customer engagement tools”. In particular Eventjoy is
considered to be strong in terms of its ability to serve mobile com-
munication devices. In terms of partnership agreements the compa-
ny announced a deal with Music Management International (MMI)
in the Philippines. In recent years the national promoter presented
acts such as Maroon 5, Rihanna, Justin Bieber, Katy Perry and Bruno
Mars. The last reported share price in VIP News was $21.72, on Sep-
tember 26 it stood at $23.96.
SFX Entertainment - Moody’s affirms Second Lien Notes:
The rating agency Moody’s classifies the second lien notes for SFX
Entertainment as Caa1. C at Moody’s is actually one of the lowest
notes the agency applies. However a double AA is already some-
thing. The agency furthermore considers the outlook for SFX Enter-
tainment as “stable”. The financial volume of these notes is $220
million and last until February 1, 2019. But since the IPO of SFX En-
tertainment in October 2013 with $13 the share price meanwhile
melted down to $5.24...
