Joseph Mohr was a Catholic priest who was born in Salzburg in 1792. In 1816 Mohr wrote "Silent Night" in Mariapfarr. On Christmas Eve in 1818, Joseph Mohr asked his friend Franz Xaver Gruber to write the music for his poem. The song was performed at midnight mass with a guitar and a choir. It was declared an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO in March 2011.
