On September 26th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Oxnard Po-lice Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public an-other opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. 11 die after a 8.3 earthquake in Chile

The death toll in the magni-tude-8.3 earthquake that struck northern Chile has risen to 11, the director of the National Emergency Offi ce, or Onemi, announced last Thursday.

Ricardo Toro also said that the nine people known to have been injured in the quake are all out of mortal danger.

The latest fatality was a fi sherman identifi ed as Victor Hugo Torres.

The number of people who lost their homes in the quake stands at 610, with 179 houses totally destroyed, 175 with serious damage and 288 with minor damage, the Onemi chief said.

The temblor especially affected the region of Coquimbo, some 300 km (186 mi.) north of Santiago, leaving 87,653 people without electricity and another 9,070 with-out potable water service.

At this time, 428 people re-main in shelters established by the authorities, Toro told a press conference.

Around 1 million residents along Chile's Pacifi c coast were ordered to evacuate due to fears of a tsunami.

President Michelle Bachelet, who last Thursday traveled to the disaster zone to evaluate the damage fi rsthand, said that "the shelters are for the support of everyone."

"There are still aftershocks. People have to know what hap-pens in an aftershock, what to do, what not to do, how to try and keep calm amid the anx-iety it causes," said Bachelet, according to remarks reported by Cooperativa radio.

Toro emphasized the speed with which the navy's Hy-drographic and Oceanograph-ic Service and the National Seismological Center issued the tsunami alert, a move that allowed the rapid evacuation of communities along more than 4,000 km (2,500 mi.) of the country's Pacifi c coast.

due to these drugs. Studies show that many abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In ad-dition, many Americans do not know how to properly dispose of their unused medicine, often fl ushing them down the toilet or throwing them away – both po-tential safety and health hazards.

In the previous nine Take-Back

events nationwide from 2010-2014, 4,823,251 pounds, or 2,411 tons of drugs were collected. The Oxnard Police Department collected over 500 pounds during the 2014 collection.

Local law enforcement agen-cies like the Oxnard Police Department and the DEA will continue to hold prescription drug take-back events every few months.

6 Die in eastern Mexico mudslide

Six people died last Thursday in the eastern Mexican state of Vera-cruz when a hillside collapsed as a result of heavy rains that fell in the region, authorities said.

Offi cials with the Veracruz state Civil Protection Secretariat said

that two homes were buried by the mudslide in the town of Xilomi-chi, which is located in the central mountainous area of the state.

Six people, including children, were inside the homes and their bodies were recovered by person-

nel with the Mexican army, Civil Protection and the state police.

The tropical wave brought hea-vy rains to the area, but authorities have asked the public to take pre-cautions to guard against possible landslides and fl ooding.

(B & P Code § 17913)/s/ CANADA MEETS LA LLC RACHELLE ADRIAN SOLE MEMBERPUBLISHED:VCVN SEPT 03, 10, 17, 24, 2015

"Sometimes we don't have a chance to take our lunch break because we are made to continue working because they need to fulfill the order and so we have to eat while we work so that we can send the vegetables to the packing house faster," said a farmworker that did not provided his name for fear of retaliation. "We don't know much about overtime because they say that after 10 hours we get overtime but it never appears on our checks," sais another far-worker.

Farmworkers face some of the harshest outdoor work environ-ments. Workers are expected to be on their feet for an entire shift while performing physical labor and exposed to the elements in-cluding the sun, rain, and wind. Shifts often last 10 hours and many farm workers worked more than 40 hours a week. In Ventura County in 2013, 71% of farm-workers worked 50 to 52 weeks out of the year, while working an average of over 41 hours per week. Farmworkers work 82% more weekly hours than the av-erage worker in Ventura County.

Farmworkers are exposed to

many workplace hazards. Laws designed to protect workers need to be enforced. At the same time workers need to know their rights and be free from fear of retaliation when reporting violations. In our survey, 87% of farmworkers re-sponded they had been informed of some rights as a worker. Over one third (35.4%) have been informed verbally, while the re-maining workers were informed of their rights through written materials, posters, and/or videos.

However, the commonplace wage theft and violations of health and safety laws shown in our sur-veys reveal an inexcusable lack of implementation of basic labor protections in agriculture.

In part this is due to minimal resources at the state level, after many years of squeezed budgets for agencies that enforce labor laws. In the tri-counties area, wage claims are filed at the Santa Barbara office of the Division of Labor Standards Enforcement (DLSE). Between 2008-2011, of all the settlements awarded to workers in the region, only 18% of workers ever received their back wages. The average time between filing reports and

Farm workers...a hearing on the case was 165 days. Even in the unlikely case the worker is actually able to receive back payment after filing a wage theft claim, after many months of waiting the payment may come long after their family needs the income and with a long window of opportunity for them to be fired or retaliated against by their employer.

As well as a lack of state en-forcement, widespread labor vio-lations are the result of a culture of fear in farmwork, where this high-ly vulnerable population is largely afraid to file claims and report labor abuses. One in ten farm-workers have filed a complaint against their employer, compared to far more who have experienced violations of labor laws. One out of six (16.3%) said they’ve been fired, sent home early, or given less hours for an unfair reason and 10.6% say they’ve been threatened by their boss. This fear has direct consequences to farmworkers’ well-being. Among those in the survey who had been injured at work, 63% continued working after injury. 39% don’t feel comfortable to ask for time off for illness or other reasons.

Abuso y maltrato a...

¡¡¡Jaaaa!!! ¡¡¡Jaaaa!!! Ta gueno, ¿a poco no?
