Given the high cost of cattle and the value of the investments involved it is more important than ever to ensure the best of health and optimum growth rates.

Energy intake is the main driver of DLWG and with the price of cereals they are the first choice ingredient. ECV beef feeds are cereal based and they anticipate a strong market for balancers this year.

Because it is the cost/kg gain that matters most, the lowest cost diet is unlikely to be the most efficient. We encourage all our customers to ensure they get full product information before buying any compound.

Increasingly bull calves are being kept entire to make use of the natural hormones to help improve the efficiency of DLWG. Bulls should be kept on accelerated feeding systems as they become increasingly difficult to handle with age. Dairy bulls are best finished by 13 months old and all bulls are best away before they are 16 months old. This makes them easier to handle and feed conversion efficiency falls rapidly as they get older.

Andrew Paterson, Woodend Farm, Balfron. “The ECV Bull mix I get does a great job I wouldn’t use anything else. I kill all the bulls at 12 months old by which time Holstein/Friesians make 275-300kg dead weight grading P+ with Montbelliards slightly heavier and O+, with Belgian Blue crosses 340kg and U or R2.”

Jim and Bob Blyth, Lumphinans Farm, Lumphinans. Jim Blyth “I can hardly stress how much we rely on ECV Beef Blend, it’s the only feed we buy. Quality is consistent and the results speak for themselves.” Bob Blyth “a lot of cattle are ready to go by 12-13

month and we never keep a bull to 16 months. We aim for good grades and are pleased to average -U or R3.” Wilson Peters, Farm Manager, Monzie Farms "I use ECV Barley Beef, it does what I require it to do."

The major buyers appear to have relaxed requirements for non-GM feeds which makes life a little easier

ECV beef feeds are formulated for optimum productivity and not on a least cost basis. They contain quality ingredients to produce palatable nuts, rolls and blends. All ECV beef feeds are properly supplemented with copper and should not be fed to sheep. All can be used for both stores and finishing diets, only the amount fed varies.

ECV Beef Blend (Oil 3.78%, Protein 15%, Fibre 6.7%, Ash 6.7%) An ideal cereal based blend for most beef systems.

ECV Beef Nuts/Rolls (Oil 3.7%, Protein 15%, Fibre 7.6%, Ash 6%) High energy cereal based nut, flows better in bins than blend so might suit your system better than ECV Beef Blend.

ECV 17% Beef Stock Nuts (Oil 4.1%, Protein 17%, Fibre 9.1%, Ash 7.3%) Ideal for feeding along with low protein forage.

ECV Barley Beef (Oil 3.7%, Protein 15%, Fibre 6.8%, Ash 6.8%) An ideal blend for bull beef. Contains both Biosprint live yeast and Acidbuf for reduced risk of acidosis or bloat, improved feed conversion and optimum feed intake. ECV 20% Concentrate (Oil 4.8%, Protein 20%, Fibre 8.1%, Ash 6.9%) Mix 50:50 with cereals for a fully mineralised high energy feed.

ECV Barley Beef Balancer (Oil 4.1%, Protein 20%, Fibre 9.6%, Ash 10.10%) Mix 50:50 with cereals for a fully mineralised high energy feed with Biosprint live yeast and Acidbuf, ideal for Bull Beef. The inclusion of 0.8% urea helps make this an ideal concentrate where straw is the forage. For cattle over 12 weeks old.

ECV 34% Cattle Concentrate (Oil 3.3%, Protein 34%, Fibre 7.8% Ash 16.3%) Mix with cereals 4:1 for a fully mineralised feed. Cattle 34% contains high levels of Hi-pro Soya.

ECV Beef 34% Concentrate + Urea (Oil 4.2%, Protein 34%, Fibre 7.8%, Ash 17.6%) Mix 4:1 with cereals for a fully mineralised feed for cattle over 12 weeks old. ECV supply a full range of straights and ECV straights trader Iain Reid would be more than happy to discuss your needs.
