PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGEDear Members of the Villanova College Family,
World Youth Day 2016 has just concluded in Krakow, Poland and it was interesting to note that there was very little media attention surrounding this significant event. World Youth Day celebrates Pope John Paul’s vision for young people, renewed again with the presence of Pope Francis. Krakow, Poland is where St John Paul II was Archbishop before his election to the papacy.
World Youth Day is more than just a meeting drawing thousands or even millions of young people. It is testimony of a living Church that is continually being renewed. Youth are the protagonists of this meeting of faith, hope and unity. The main goal of WYD is to let youth know about the message of Jesus Christ, in the context of a joyful meeting of the Pope, young people and leaders of the Church. It is also true that through young people of faith, the young ‘face’ of Jesus is shown to the world.
On Tuesday evening I visited the Year 10 students at Emu Park Gully near Helidon and found the students in good spirits, enjoying the experience and a little tired. This program conducted at the Outdoor Education Centre is designed to push our young men out of their comfort zone and to meet the challenges placed before them with determination and perseverance. It was pleasing to hear the praise from the Outdoor Centre staff for the students’ efforts and their determination shown in these activities.
This Saturday, 6th August, the AIC Cross-Country Championship will be held at Limestone Park, Ipswich. A supporters’ bus will be departing the College on Saturday morning from the Sixth Avenue entrance of the College at 8.00am to return at approximately 1.00pm. The athletes have been training for a number of weeks and they are looking forward
to the competition. We wish all our runners the best for the day and the “Villanova Army” will be out in force to cheer on our teams.
Next week the Queensland Catholic College and Schools Music Festival - QCMF will be held at Villanova College and St James School, Coorparoo from Thursday 11 August through until Sunday evening, 14 August. During the four days over 13,000 students and visitors will enjoy the opportunity to listen to many fantastic performances. We are ready to host this great event and look forward to welcoming the performers to our College.
National Vocations Awareness Week
National Vocations Awareness week begins on Sunday 7 August through until Sunday 14 August 2016. This weekend we focus on each person’s vocation, especially our primary vocation - the call to holiness. The call to holiness is to become all that God has created us to be, to love the Lord our God with all our heart, mind, and soul and to share our gifts and talents for the common good of all society. We pray that our young people will hear the call to dedicate their lives to God and make a commitment to serve God’s people.
Something to think about…
What/who helps me to reflect on how God is calling me at the moment?
In what way do you, your family and the Villanova community support and
encourage young people to dedicate their life to God?
You have made us for Yourself O Lord And our Hearts are restless until they rest in You.
God bless,
Mr Mark Stower
Principal

HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOLIn a fortnight we will have three Junior School staff attending the National Boys and Education Conference at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. There will be keynote addresses and workshops based on current, pertinent topics such as providing effective feedback, the psychology of defiance and refusal, differentiation in learning, coding, contemporary and alternative programming and much more. This professional development builds upon previous College tutorials of the brain science of adolescent males and the implementation of Restorative Practices. Teachers, specialists, office staff and the Learning Enrichment team are constantly reviewing and staying abreast of the most recent findings of how best to understand and help our sons move forward academically, socially and emotionally. This week I thought I would provide just a little insight into such topics so that College families can also be briefed.
Feedback is crucial to developing our best potential. Just last week I received my summative appraisal where staff gave responses to questions and also comments about my leadership role over the past three years. Students are no different and deserve the chance to hear back in various forms about their behaviour, work and attitude, both positive and constructive. Yet how often do we give the boys the chance to do the same for us as educators, and dare I say it, even as parents? It’s very true that every individual student needs a specific method to do this, but a simple way might be to give them the floor – and the time to respond honestly – with a question such as “What can I do to help you be your best self?”. “What do you need from me to make your goals happen?”. Pausing and listening are the next two things you need to do, no judgements and no speedy replies. Hear every word and consider the world from a young male in 2016 – his point of view at this moment in time. His ideas at first might be humorous as this kind of platform could be new and he will enjoy the chance to speak freely, but ultimately there will be genuine ideas and a way to take your relationship to a new level.
Differentiation has been a popular topic in education for many years. Essentially it’s about catering for the many entry points that boys start a lesson, including the experiences that engage and stimulate their focus, then sharing findings back to a central place where everyone can ensure that key elements are understood. Teachers differentiate in
many ways based upon their core group of students’ needs, learning styles and resources available. Technology certainly adds unlimited dimensions to skilful research and presentation of ideas – but there’s another important focus on the physical space our boys learn in. The need for movement during a task is vital for some boys to work effectively for longer periods. Some bodies are best stretched on the floor, others prefer to sit and some want individual time on a task whilst others crave conversation. Boys need the choice to choose how they feel about subjects on given days because perhaps some days they need more teacher direction than others. Some differentiation is planned and other opportunities are spontaneous when feedback indicates that a switch in direction will benefit everyone involved.
Coding brings the technology, programming and higher order problem solving worlds together. I am in awe of people who can make sense of this kind of learning. Yet the world is full of individuals who have developed Apps, Games and Programs that run everything from our elections to Pokémon Go. I do know that adults can never think their learning with technology is ever done as updates and new versions of what we use is never-ending. How many times do we ask our children to help us solve a problem with technology? They are brave, risk-taking without even realising it and achieving so much more than we ever did with the Encyclopaedia Britannica. Entwine the impact of social media and responsible online activity and we have the most versatile but perhaps complicated web of negotiating the best support and extension for our boys. Experts in this field are invaluable for anyone with children.
Effective teaching is far beyond the National Curriculum and it continues well after the co-curricular activities have been completed for the day. We can never assume we know all there is about the students we teach as their world is subject to so much more instability and opportunities than we can even imagine. We do have the responsibility to stay in touch, communicate and be engaged with the students to ensure they are connected in heart, mind and spirit.
Mr Stephen Rouhliadeff, Head of Junior School

QUESTION OF THE WEEK 19th Sunday Ordinary Time, 7th August
Did you know?
• A Jewish wedding consisted of the groom going in possession to the home of the bride where the wedding took place and a feast was held. After this celebration, the groom returns to his own home with his bride to begin their life together.
Question of the Week. Luke 12:32 - 48
Jesus said, “When a person has had a great deal given them, a great deal will be demanded of them; when someone has had a great deal given them on trust, even more will be expected of them.”
What difference does it make to your life to be aware of the “great deal given to you”?

MINISTRYTalent Quest
This evening at 5:30pm we will hold the Villa-Loreto Talent Quest with 18 entertaining acts. This collaboration between the sibling schools has been enjoyable to watch and the evening will not only showcase some great talent but also show what students can achieve when working together for a wider goal. In this case, the proceeds all go to the St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal. One of the judges will be Bianca Nisbet, Program Coordinator of Vortcs – the SVP Volunteer Refugee Tutoring and Community Support program. Entry at the door is $5 for adults and a gold coin for students. There is also a sausage sizzle available from 5pm for a gold coin donation. Have Villa and Loreto got talent? Why not come along and have a look?
Reconciliation Garden
Thanks to the united vision of staff members Ms Alison Perrott and Mr John Roberts, we today planted an Australian bush-style garden in front of the Reconciliation Mural outside the Tolle Lege Upper Library. Several YAYM (Middle School Ministry) students enthusiastically assisted, and they have taken on the task of helping with the upkeep of the garden. This space is to be a reflective and sacred space which will provide a visual and tactile symbol of our efforts to reach out the hand of friendship to all in Australia who do not enjoy the same advantages as our students. In particular, our efforts in maintaining and improving the garden are a way of honouring the initiative taken last year by indigenous student Mackenzie Sarra, who designed and coordinated the painting of the mural.
Sixth Annual Fair Go Footy Event
In the same spirit of reconciliation, we will once again be opening up our superb facilities at Villa Park on Sunday 16th October to bring young people from diverse backgrounds together over a shared love of footy. Last week I mentioned that Yourtown (formerly Boystown) now look forward to this annual event as a way of lifting the morale of some of the young people in their educational programs. There is a part of
Brisbane sometimes air-brushed from our view at Villa, where young people don’t necessarily eat every day or own a pair of shoes. Some of these young people are members of the two Yourtown teams who will play their annual “state of origin” touch footy match on the 16th October at Villa Park. If there are any families willing to donate some good quality boots or to provide a little sponsorship to buy the playing shirts for these young people, then I would be happy to hear from you.
Rosies
Last Friday, once again a team of staff and students went out onto Roma Street with the Rosies van. Interestingly, the team leader on the evening was Blake Johnson, a young Old Boy from 2013. It is wonderful to see a steady trickle of young Old Boys involved in this kind of volunteering. What is obvious is that our students really shine in their interactions with the patrons: actions speak louder than words. Many of us spent time talking to an older gentleman who sleeps rough. What was really apparent was his craving for a friendly conversation. What also stood out was the number of patrons who immediately asked for sleeping bags or bed backpacks. When the blankets or sleeping bags get wet they are hard to re-use. So, we are considering having a blanket and sleeping bag drive to coincide with our sleep-out on 19th August. More information will follow if this plan is approved.
Villa Student runs 10km Bridge to Brisbane to help fight cancer
Maxwell Shearer is currently in Year 7 and was diagnosed with a rare type of cancer when he was 10 years old.
This year Max will be running the 10km Bridge to Brisbane to raise money for the Queensland Children’s Tumour Bank, which is supported through the Children’s Hospital Foundation. You can support Max by donating at his link and by sharing his fundraising page with your networks. https://b2b2016.everydayhero.com/au/maxwell.
Well done Max, Villanova College is very proud of you!

MUSICQCMF – is here!
QCMF is now only seven days away. Our banners are flying, grounds are being spruced, and finishing touches are being made to several behind-the-scenes items to ensure the largest QCMF ever runs smoothly as always.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the organising group and team of wonderful volunteers for their work over the past 12 months to ensure this year’s event is as exciting as all in this festival’s history. Without the work of this motivated group we would not be able to run such an event at Villanova College – thank you.
QCMF is a major event in the calendar of many Catholic Schools across Queensland. In my experience, attending from a regional centre for many years, QCMF was an opportunity for students not just to come to Brisbane but an opportunity to renew links with musician friends they had met at various camps and activities from across the state. QCMF is not just about the music, it is about community.
Villanova prides itself on its sense of community. I see every year through this event, through our sporting endeavours and through our Old Boys Association an underlying pride in the College and its history. I would like to encourage you all to demonstrate that our community goes beyond our fences and this hill on Coorparoo; for four days in August, our community embraces Queensland and Australia.
We would appreciate it if you could afford a couple of hours at some time over this four-day period. You may be able to roll snags on a BBQ, collect money for tickets, perhaps even open a door at a venue – all very small jobs but vital to the smooth running of this event. If you would prefer to bake, we would welcome cake donations that we can sell to the many visitors over the Festival.
The volunteer portal for the Festival is now currently active. To view which openings are still available, please visit www.qcmfvolunteering.com/rosters. From this page you will be able to log in to the portal and nominate for positions. We look forward to the continued support of our Villa community.
Students and QCMF
Just a few reminders to all parents regarding our musicians and their involvement at QCMF next week:
• Friday is NOT a regular school day – if your child is attending Friday for a performance or to volunteer, outside their time of engagement we are unable to provide supervision.

When students arrive, they will be given directions to the room where they are to meet their ensemble director in.
We look forward to seeing as many of our community as possible in the audience across the weekend. It would be wonderful for our students to see some familiar faces and I am certain our visiting schools would appreciate support from a positive local community.
QCMF Mass
Fr. Peter Wieneke, our College Chaplain, will be celebrating Mass with the QCMF and Villanova Community on Sunday 14th August, in Goold Hall commencing at 7:30am. You are all most welcome to come and participate in this wonderful experience with some of our regional friends and the Villanova and Ambrose Treacy Community.
HELP NEEDED FOR QCMF - Helen Price, Café Coordinator
Next week we will be hosting the Queensland Catholic Schools and Colleges Music Festival (QCMF) (11th August - Sunday 14th August). Once again, we are asking parents and members of the Villa community to volunteer in any way they can for the Festival. In this note I am calling specifically for help with the catering. With over 14,000 student performances registered we have a big job ahead of us to feed everyone.
How you can help:
• Donations of cakes and/or slices (no muffins please as they become stale very quickly) (home cooking is wonderful but if time is short, bought cakes such as Sara Lee etc. are fine). All deliveries can be made at the Tuckshop from 10:00am on Thursday, 11th August as well as the mornings of the Festival from 8:00am.
• The Café needs volunteers to help make sandwiches, serve customers and cook on the BBQ. Please go to the volunteer portal to register www.qcmfvolunteering.com. If you have any problems, please contact the Music Department at [email protected].
Our Lady of Mt Carmel Fete – Sunday 7th August
Our Big Band and Supernovans will be performing at the Mt Carmel School on Sunday 7th August commencing at 1:10pm. All students will need to arrive by 12:40pm for warm-up and set-up.

VILLANOVA COLLEGE PERFORMANCE TIMES AT QCMF 2016
QCMF VOLUNTEER FORM ON PAGE 12
Last Friday our College gathered and publically acknowledged those boys who will be representing Villanova at the AIC Cross Country Championships this Saturday. It was with great pleasure that we announced our open team as well as Team Captain – Callum Davies. Many boys have prepared well and we wish them every success at this weekend’s AIC Championships. Best wishes to the 2016 Villanova Cross Country Team!
We encourage as many students as possible to avail themselves of the supporter’s bus this Saturday. It would be wonderful to see as many boys as possible support our runners.
I am a big believer in many lessons in life being learnt whilst playing sport. Sometimes you work hard and get the results and sometimes you don’t. Developing a sense of resilience when things don’t go your way and being happy knowing that you did the necessary work are worthwhile values to instil in our student athletes. Throughout the year the College has had some fantastic sporting achievements and sometimes we didn’t perform as well as we would have liked. If you enter the sports realm you have to be prepared to take the wins and losses.
Villa’s success across all areas comes about because all or most within our community make it a success, it doesn’t just happen! If we strive to be the best, we all must take responsibility to ensure we do our part to make Villa a great community. If we are good enough to represent our school, we should represent our school. Villanova would not be the great place it is if we didn’t have our best giving of their best. There is little use possessing a gift or talent and not using it. At the conclusion of each round of sport or each championship event I am satisfied and happy if I know our students and coaches gave their best throughout the season and have enjoyed themselves along the way. The result is secondary.
The AIC Track and Field (T&F) training program will commence in two weeks. The training schedules are posted on the web. We encourage all students from Years 5 - 12 to participate and work hard at track and field training in order to improve. The College is very much aware that many of our top track and field athletes will already be involved in tennis, basketball or other co-curricular activities. Although we try to avoid timetabling clashes we know that some training sessions will overlap for the boys. This is normal and occurs at all AIC schools, keeping the lines of communication open between coaches and students is the key.
I urge all parents to ensure their son participates in next week’s Villanova College Inter-House Track and Field Carnival at Villanova Park. It is a part of our school program and is therefore considered mandatory. All students from Year 5 - 12 will participate in at least eight events throughout the day. The day will conclude with the 100m finals for each year level followed by presentations. I urge all students and parents to support the College in this event. A program of the day’s events will be posted on the web.
Our Year 5 and 6 students had another great round of results against Padua last Friday. This week the Year 5 and 6 boys will play against Iona. Well done to all involved in the trial round of AIC tennis (Year 5 - 12) and basketball (Year 7 - 12) against Padua last weekend. Our boys had great success overall and these trials have given our coaches an opportunity to see the players perform within a game situation. I would expect a number of changes to the team lists next time around based on performances given last week. I make no apology for proclaiming we want to take out the basketball aggregate this year. I believe we have the coaches, players and program in place to make this a reality. Hard work at training and during game time is needed each week. I wish all tennis and basketball players the very best.
AIC Cross Country – Mr Brett Morrissey, AIC Cross Country Coordinator
At the College Assembly last Friday, our community acknowledged the hard work and commitment of our cross country runners over the past thirteen weeks. The final selections have taken place and twelve students will be running in each age category this Saturday at the AIC Championships.
Proudly presented to the College were the Open team for 2016, along with Ruben Webb: Vice-Captain (Junior School), George Stokes: Vice-Captain (Middle School) and Dominic Coote: Vice Captain (Senior School). The squad captain for 2016, Callum Davies, then addressed the College in a fine and stirring speech and I am sure the entire squad had chills down their spines as they listened to Callum, in anticipation of Saturday’s carnival. Callum has always lead from the front and the squad is fortunate to have a captain who models such tenacity and determination to succeed.
On Saturday, runners will arrive at Villanova College at 6.30am, have a squad photo taken at 6.45am, and then depart in plenty of time to walk their course and warm up for their race. They would dearly love to have plenty of support from the Villa community on Saturday. There will be a supporter’s bus taking students out; I’d take the opportunity now to publicly thank the students who will offer their support so willingly.
The squad will travel to Panchos Pizza, Bulimba, at the completion of the carnival, for a well-deserved pizza lunch, accompanied by some awards and speeches.
Best of luck to all runners this Saturday, ‘Carn the Cats!
AIC Cross Country Championships
There will be a bus leaving from Villanova College at 7:00am for all runners and 7:30am for all spectators. We envisage that the supporter’s bus will return to the College by 1pm approximately. The athlete’s bus will return to Panchos Pizza, Oxford St, Bulimba for a well-deserved pizza lunch followed by some short presentations. All athletes attending the lunch will need to be collected by their parents at 2:45pm from Bulimba.
It is imperative that all Villanova runners look like a team, therefore we expect all runners to wear the following uniform on the day of the Championships and for the team photo.
Villanova Cross Country Uniform
• Villa white running shorts
• Villa athletics singlet
• Villa squad shirt
• Villa sports jacket (optional but highly recommended)
• Villa track suit (optional)
Note: This uniform is the same as the AIC Track and Field uniform and will remain the same for many years to come. All items are available for purchase from the College Uniform Shop.

Villanova Cross Country Supporters Bus
We hope to fill a supporter’s bus to attend the AIC Championship. Any boy from Years 5-12 who wishes to attend must complete the sign on sheet, which is located outside the Sports Office. A bus will depart the College on the day of the championships at 7:30am and should return around 1:00pm. All supporters must wear the full academic school uniform.
AIC Track and Field
AIC track and field (T&F) training will commence the week after Ekka week. All interested students are asked to attend the various track and field meetings held throughout this week for each discipline in order for each coach to distribute all information. A full season schedule can be found on the Villa website. All track and field coaches will monitor student attendance at all training sessions. Students will be contacted either by their coach or a member of the Sports Office and asked to explain any absenteeism. We expect all students to make contact with their coach if they are unable to make training. Rolls will be taken each week to ensure that those who have signed-on follow through with their commitment as this not only builds character but also the College’s track and field program. Parental support with this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Met East Track and Field Nominations
All athletes from under 13 – Opens who wish to nominate for the 2016 Met East Track and Field Championships are to complete the nomination form which can be found outside the Sports Office. Please note that students must meet qualifying standards in order to be considered. These standards will not be advertised. ALL nominations close next Tuesday, August 9th.
Villanova Track and Field Carnival Years 5 – 12 is COMPULSORY!
All students from Years 5 - 12 are required to attend Villanova’s annual Inter-House Track and Field Carnival to be held at Villa Park on Thursday 11th August. All students are to attend school as per normal times, wearing their full PE uniform to and from school. Buses will then transport the boys to and from Villa Park. We urge all parents to support the College and ensure that all boys attend. Canteen facilities will be available at the Park.
We ask students to bring a small bag on the day for their belongings including a hat, sunscreen and water bottles (food etc.). The first events are due to start at 9.45am with the last event run at 2.00pm followed by presentations. All students will be rotated around 100m, hurdles (not compulsory), 200m, Javelin, 800m, Long Jump, Shot Put, High Jump (a select few in each age group only) and Tug-o-War events. Our aim is to have fun, promote track and field, give everybody a go, showcase our best athletes and identify those boys who should be in the AIC track and field squad.
Villanova Inter-House Track and Field Carnival Canteen - Your assistance is required
We are hoping to run hot chips and a BBQ as well as the normal canteen next Thursday at the Villa Track and Field Day. outstanding effort against Padua last weekend. Villanova recorded 7 out of 8 wins with only the 6A team losing in a nail biter by 1 point. Congratulations to all boys on their efforts, particularly the 6A team, who showed excellent sportsmanship and resilience.

AIC Tennis – Mrs Kath Underhill, AIC Tennis Coordinator
Last Saturday’s trial matches were played against Padua College. The boys played well with some age groups winning comfortably. There were a few nail-biting moments within one age group as three out of four singles matches went to tie-breaking deciders. Of those three, we had two wins and a very close loss. Special mention to Peter Prineas and Seán Aukes, who both came from 3 - 6 down to bring it back to 6 - 6 and then force a tie-breaker.
The future of Villa Tennis is looking very promising indeed with an absolute whitewash in the Year 5 age group. This was also the case for the Year 10 teams, who clean swept the opposition.
On Saturday a senior Morningside coach brought along an Olympic Torch, which was part of the 2016 Olympics flame’s journey to Rio. The boys were fascinated with its story and were thrilled at being able to hold something of such great global significance.
Overall, the boys need to be commended for the manner in which they compose themselves, especially when they lose a point. Regardless of how you feel inside, always try to look like a winner (Arthur Ashe)

NAPLAN REPORTS AVAILABLE
Parents of students in Years 5, 7 and 9 who participated In recent NAPLAN testing will, this week receive the hard copy report via conventional mail. Should you not receive this hard copy please contact the Curriculum Office at the College on 3394 5521 or [email protected] so that a copy can be forwarded to you.
These tests have received significant focus in the media and while point in time tests give a snapshot of how students are performing in a specific dimension on a given day, the NAPLAN test report should also be read in conjunction with the college generated reports and the formal and informal interviews with staff. Certainly our NAPLAN results are strong, but it is only one form of data and insight into how your son is performing.

About the Festival QCMF is the largest music festival of its kind in the Asia-Pacific Region. It is a not-for-profit festival relying on support from sponsors, volunteers and the patronage of our local music loving community. From a humble start 26 years ago, the festival has grown over the past two decades to become the premier music event for young Queensland Catholic musicians.
Know Your Venue The festival uses many venues including Villanova’s Augustine Centre, Goold Hall, Tolle Lege (Senior Library), Quadrangle Stage and Veritas building, as well as St James’ Church and Hall, located one block south of Villanova College.
To avoid missing a performance, identify the location and venue that you need to go to well in advance.
Parking Street parking is available around the College and St James Church. The College has excellent public transport access; however, if you drive we ask that you respect our local community and be considerate when parking your vehicle. You may have to park a long way from the College, so arrive early to give yourself plenty of time.
On Arrival All performers check-in at the warm-up arrival area either at Villanova College or St James Church, before being led to a warm-up room to unpack instruments, organize music and warm up. After the performance, ensemble members will return to the warm-up room to pack up. They should then join the audience for the remaining performances and prepare two ensemble members to receive their ensemble’s adjudication and award.
During Each Performance Venue doors are closed during each performance. Arrive early to avoid missing a performance.
2016 FESTIVAL HOST
Child Supervision Child supervision facilities are not available. Do not leave children unsupervised. The Hub near the Augustine Centre and near St James’ church will assist in locating lost children.
Food Hot food, snacks, cold drinks and coffee can be purchased from a variety of vendors. Food is not allowed in performance venues in keeping with the concert hall etiquette that we teach students.
Entry Fee Entry fees are payable at the door. Festival Passes are $10/Adult, $5/Concession; Free Entry for all school-aged children and younger. This gives admission to all sections across the entire festival. There will be some access to EFTPOS for entry fees and refreshments.
Videoing and Photography Videoing and photography (including the use of personal mobile devices) will not be permitted during performances. This is to ensure we work within copyright legislation and ensure the Festival’s duty of care in terms of child protection.
Further Assistance Check our website for festival information, venue locations, session times and session availability. For assistance during the festival, any of our friendly volunteers will be happy to help you.
Volunteering If you would like to be more actively involved in this event, the QCMF organising group would happily welcome any assistance you could provide. Should you wish to participate, please visit the volunteering portal at www.qcmfvolunteering.com to register. For further information, please contact the Music Office on 3394 5691 or email [email protected].
The Hub A new addition for 2016. First-Aid? Lost a child? Want directions? Drop by The Hub, located on the lawn just past the Augustine Centre. Our friendly volunteers will be happy to help.
