December 25th 1943Very quiet Xmas – day spent in playing volley ball in between falls of snow – and at night played cards. Breakfast we had ( the Combine) - porridge, and spaghetti on fried bread. Dinner was roast meat, cabbage, spuds and vegetable salad – tea – red Cross steak and kidney stew. First supper Xmas pudding and custard, Last supper , Xmas cakes. Also three kegs ( about 15 gallons) of Jerry beer. We missed Stewarts’ talk. Received note from Fred Moore ( ChCh) who is working at sawmill in Aichelsdorf.

Boxing Day Falls of snow throughout the day -spent in volley ball and cards.

Monday 27th DecWork again .I was feeling like nothing on earth- pains in stomach, sore head and general morning after night before feeling. I couldn’t blame it on the beer as I had very little, even then it wasn’t strong enough to knock a kid over – went to bed early – Joe was up to his tricks again and making good progress. Scharnhart sunk dong and his mates making slow progress around onatio.

Wednesday 29th Weather very mild last couple of days. Monday sun poked through and melted snow on trees and since then it has been thawing – snow disappearing fast under the trees. The drips are just like a fall of rain. The “lead penant” wants us to do a metre of wood per man per day perhaps at present our gang are doing it just over half a metre per man which wasn.t too much. He suggested ... a day..... Today Noel and I tried to slow up more than others but ended up with cold feet and browned off though him getting annoyed. Last night Kowen... moved two weeks issue .. he .. sigh of relief as we did not have enough in our .. for one issue.

Friday, New Years’ EveWeather changing and snow falling. We finished work at twenty to ten and sat around the fire until eleven. Evening sport playing cards. Went down to Tasday with Harry to ask for a keg of beer – called in at Gustigo on way back he gave us some pieces of cake and a snifter to drink the New year in and wished each of us the best of luck - also wished us all the best . Biri loaned our torch and it was - 1944. And we all said that perhaps this may be the year of victory .

January 1st . SaturdaySnowing all day – sluggish all afternoon – tired after the late night - stayed in bed until eleven.

3rd Jan Work again. Today very quiet day, snowing and raining all day.Guys got sick of the boys playing cards so they went out into the snow – a snow fight started – snowballs whizzing around the kitchen and lager. Today we started a new area – back out the Sand Crate where we had worked hard to clear - very wet and slushy. 240 red cross parcels arrived today – 10 weeks issue so we all set for winter . There is a .. room around the woods as .. a bit.. sher is supposed to have done the ... last year.

5th JanTerrible day yesterday – rain and snow – our clothes are wet through when we arrived back at Lager – heard that Belgerian Govt was over the war. Jerry captured another important town – and more than fifty miles from Slovakia and Hungary , and one treaty from Romania. Today weather a bit brighter – snow fights, so wet. I changed into my long undies this morning. There’s talk that three of the boys are going for a walk one of these days so that they can get back to Stalag. They are three brits and won’t be missed so far as we are concerned.

7th Jan FridayYesterday a lot of excitement- Lance Cpl ( Dhoer) Hurst failed to come back with the boys – the story goes that when his gang knocked off at night he picked a place on the way back the jerries called after him to go slower but he ignored them. Scrooges enquired for him at Lager and later on the Gafrecter came in saying that he had caught him talking to a jerry woman in the woods wh had a long list of stuff for him. Buster had been under suspicion for a long time – the Ger saw the woman going up the track and he followed her and hid behind the rocks. Buster came along and the big capture was made. In the evening this Gefard guard went through Buster’s gear and confiscating everything German. At present he is in a city police jail . We are expecting the Wobler to come and search all of our kit and also to bestow his blessing and usual strafe measures on us. Today most of the curries have a shake on. The Pole said that Buster will get two or three years.Noel and I worked upat 23 Bruicke with Bransey as Limsmann was sick. We were given a big tree to fall – festy, cut up and stack. Kept us going all day - so far Wobbler hasn’t come .

10th January MondayNo work today as it was raining too heavily. Just as well , I woke up like nothing on earth this morning – very little sleep last night – air in Lager is pretty thick at nights.

SaturdayBuster was taken to Stalag.

SundayVery quiet day – expecting two of the boys now to go for a walk. O didn’t come off, both want sick today. But Parsons got Stalag, other ambient. Jerry searched Berts and Jack Taits’ gear tonight as they are going back to Stalag tomorrow(jack about his teeth). Bit of a blarney between Bert and Gef about Bert’s rank as Corporal. Gef thinks it a swindle and is reporting it to stalag.

12th Jan WednesdayYesterday Noel and I detailed to work with Robert Muelless gang as soon as we arrived on the job tools were brought out to start work straight away. Noel and I were used to lighting a fire first and sit around smoking for about a quarter of an hour so we started to make one, civvies objected and threatened to report us back to the Oberfest. Then they decided to separate Noel and i , but we stood our ground – said that we had always worked together so they gave in. Two civvies are there- a couple of old women, frightened of each other and frightened of the big shots.

Lager was very quiet at night and seemed empty, only nineteen men.

Thursday

Page 3: Web viewTerrible day yesterday – rain and snow – our clothes are wet through when we arrived back at Lager – heard that Belgerian Govt was over the war

Very mild, sun shone for a few hours. We had a good bludge this morning carrying out wood. Stazel Schimped to civvies again about not enough work – our spuds are cut down again by 28kgs a week – and they expect more work out of us .

14th January, FridayYesterday parcels ap that Fisky had brought back from Stalag – I got my August parcel from home- 8lb of chocolate in it – noticed address of sender on the parcel, tag,and card inside as Mrs D Thomas- in mother’s handwriting. Fisky wasn’t very impressed with Stalag- Russians, Belgians, French and British all in same compound. If a Russian is caught in one of the British barracks the whole barrack, complete with all gear, clothing and mattresses must parade at delouse. He said the grub wasn’t so bad, but th e tables, barracks, etc were filthy. Our tea last night was a wicked mess, mostly water, a few spuds and some beet fit for a pigs consumption.- We wouldn’t eat it and left it to show Stanzal in the morning.

Frid morningBrought to Stanzal in to see soup that was put out to us to eat – told him what we thought ofit and his extra work – full of excuses. Later in the morning he came up where we were working and taffy and i gave him the works. He said they couldn’t give what they hadn’t got – so we said that we couldn’t work if we had nothing to work on. Tonight I was making my bed on top bunk – standing on it – the next moment I was standing on the bed underneath – the boards had given away- I can just imagine what Doreen would think.

17th Jan Monday On Saturday the weather was raining quite heavily – about 7AM it eased off a bit and we were told to fall in for work – nine of us only , the rest had the day off. The civvies were standing about wondering what to do. It started to rainsteadily again so we filed inside out of the wet until they decided amongst themselves – the result- the civvies went home and we had the day off. Frisky came back from shopping about twelve and said that he found out that Yakima –a little rat faced boses man had told the local council that we wouldn’t work, what we thought of him and what was going to be said to him if he put hid foot inside our lager again is unprintable.

SundayRain turned tosnow – mail up today. I got a letter from Doreen and one from mother. Frankie got a letter from Nick( repatriated back toEngland) saying that he thought his wife was going tohave a baby - evidently one of the surprises that he had previously promised us. Today, mile again – sunshine. Harry and I had a good bludge shaking logs. Tonight crowned off – couldn’t eat much grub – at present can hear some Jerry broadcasting – probably wanting more work – will be jolly glad and thankful to get out of this life.

19th Jan WednesdayYesterday two civvies went working on their own and left us working in an area of our own – they said to keep our work separate so that the “ Lead Pencil” could see how much we were doing – or how little – we thought the idea alright – and said that Stencil could complain at us when there wasn’t enough work done – evidently they talked over between themselves = later on because after awhile they came and worked with us again – probably frightened we might escape. Today we had a visit from the Pole and later on from the Gef and Fieldwebel – not one of them said anything tous about our work.

23rdJan Sunday

Page 4: Web viewTerrible day yesterday – rain and snow – our clothes are wet through when we arrived back at Lager – heard that Belgerian Govt was over the war

Weather milder , snow disappearing fast – work goes on as usual – we are settling down with our civvies now- we plod along on our own way and they go theres. One of the guards has been shifted – we think the local council took a dislike to him as he fought for us to much in matters of food and fuel for fire. Frisky received a letter from Nick who said that his wife was going to have a baby. Harry Brinner received parcel of records – its a change tohear good English music again.

26th Jan WedNew guard took Reichs place on weekend. Last night Tfitz who had been here before came back again – he took Ferenands place who left today- snowy a bit today - on whole weather very mild and very little snow about. Yesterday Tich went sick and got Stalag also – this will bring the party down to eighteen.

28th Jan Friday This morning Tich and Gordon left for Stalag – accompanied by Swinder (Sawiteter) who went also in business. Three of us loaded wood onto truck today –foing also we had to push it past points – too heavy couldn’t move it – the civvy asked two Ukranian girls to help – truck just shot along the rails. 208 more Canadian parcels arrived tonight – we now have supplies enough for about 6 months – We heard that Rome had fallen in our hands.

30 Jan SundayYesterday Smidgyar arrived back from Stalag – not very impressed with it. Rail up yesterday – I didn’t get away again. Weather raining and very mild – heard that six more men are coming here. Hitler made a speech tonight –Stewart wasn’t very impressed with it.

1stfebruary TuesdayWeather very mild , juist like Spring tim. Today we sat in sun for lunch and worked with our pullovers off. Had a bit of blarney with the civvies – Robert told harry todo less talking and more work. Harry replied suitably in unprintable English and a big argument ensued. Robert went and got the Gef. The oberfest and Stenzil who all came hurrying up on their bikes like a flying squad. Everybody started arguing – Noel and i got into it as well – ended up by telling the heads that we preferred not to work with Robert - a lot of dirty washing was brought up and thoroughly rinsed – the argument end up by jokes being cracked.

4th February ,FridayWeather mild – showers of rain –what snow was lying about is melting fast . Thursday we finished our job and went to a new place a bit up from Lager – three saws cutting down trees, dropping everywhere. Wednesday night Harry had a long talk with the Gef who told him a few things of interest about rations and work. Also lowdown on the Buster affair.

6th February SundayYesterday five of us went to Qualisch to the dentist – by rail through undulating country at times pine forests, queer rock formations , farm land – small villages. At dentst we met a party of Palestinians who gave us a bit of news – told us about the rackets they were in and their maner of working. Mail up – none for me again. Snowing very heavily again , spoiling our spring weather – slept in late this morning –few metres of snow outside – played table tennis all afternoon.

8th February

Page 5: Web viewTerrible day yesterday – rain and snow – our clothes are wet through when we arrived back at Lager – heard that Belgerian Govt was over the war

Yesterday plenty of snow lying about - sun shone brilliantly and the glare from the snow was hard on the eyes – loaded a wagon of wod – back on the job Robert was on his own cutting trees down. For the first time in seventeen months the local council opened up their hearts and gave us two mere of firewood.. Today we went down to the station again to l oad another wagon of wood but it didn’t arrive – we wasted a couple of hours waiting for it. Weather very cold and dull - hail shower. Feld Webel at Lager today said we had to dig our air raid shelter out in our spare time. I woke up with a stiff neck this morning but so far it isn’t bad enough for three days.

13th February SundayThursday – bad weather , strong winds and snow – we worked until twelve and went back to Laager – most of the boys were in. Friday - plenty of snow about – the school children were going to school on skis and later in the day about thirty of then were skiing down a slope close to where we were working. Saturday went to dentist again. Mail up but none for me – slept in afternoon – wind and snow and today strong wind and snow again, very cold in bed last nigt – couldn’t sleep for a long while –imaginitis.

14th February , MondayDeep snow to work in. Tonight we heard that an Englander had been caught out with a young girl of 14 at Adersback ( the Jewish orbits kommadof – the girl is supposed to have had a bag full of Red Cross stuff that the Pols gave in return for – (what) – this si the third time thta a POW has been caught out just recently around here – first as sawmill when a couple of boys were caought with a couple of girls in Wekelsdorf – one girl was the wobblers niece. Secondly Buster’s case here on our job and now this new affair.

16th Feb WednesdayYesterday loaded a wagon of wod – very cold. Today bitterly cold wind.- I nearly cried this afternoon with the pain of the cold in my toes – we are working ina very bleak place that catches the wind. Was told tonight that we wouldn’t be gaetting any cards or letters to write home for about 3 months as teh RAF had bombed the printers in Berlin.

18th Feb FridayYesterday bitterleu cold wind and snow just sounded as if had blown straight off the Pole –joined in on three turks – Robert afraid of his heart and gave us 55 minutes for Jackstauf –he was cold too – I really think he is getting more human. Mail up and one letter ( realy two) for me – one letter that counts from Doreen – photos of Nancys bridal group enclosed – Doreen looks lovely as a blushing bridesmaid although I don’t think her nibs is really blushing. – My first letter for quite a while - other letter from Canterbury Red Cross – Arthur said that our fringing fags were cut down to 30 per month and if we worked well and gave no trouble we would get 45 – 15 extra per month – ½ a fag a day – ofcourse that is if we work good – talk about a lot f kids. I think its a bit fishy. Today - cald as. Robert erected a shelter for us - he even smiles at us now- what mugs these Jerries are, working inthis weather. Froggy fags up –usual issue of 75 – something fishy yesterday – if we cause trouble or the bosses are not satisfied with the work the issue will be cut down to 30.

23rd February wedI went to work – dentist next week for me. Harry & Norm were talking to some Bodisch boys who said that they heard rumours of another report of 9000 men.

Sunday

Page 6: Web viewTerrible day yesterday – rain and snow – our clothes are wet through when we arrived back at Lager – heard that Belgerian Govt was over the war

Sunny day – usual type of Sunday – mending gloves, shaving, cleaning boots – table tennis, cards.

MondayNothing unusual

Tuesday Tich Bresnichan arrived back here – he viewed Stalag as a good rest home for tired prisoners - told us George Neville had died in there. We are getting new Kdo Fuhrere – fromJews lager. Today nice and suny.

28th February , MondayWeather picking up. On Saturday went to dentist – met some of the Jews ( two of them being Tommies). The Tommies weren’t too pleased with the Jews- said they got all the good jobs and lived just like a Jerry - most of them are refugees from Europe – one from Latovia , Rumania , Checho, Poland, etc. The one caught with the young girl was from Latovia - the story now is that the jerries followed his footsteps in the snow and caught them- girl was examined – was supposed to havebeen out with a Jerry soldier a few weeks previous. On the way home from Quatish two more Tommies on the train - from a party near Frantanan – they were going to inspect Jews job and take ours if satisfactory .Sunday Wagon in - four men detailed - sunny day

MondayFour men had the day off but were told that had to lose half a days wages ( 35ff) as they were supposed to have had Saturday morning off.

29thFebruary TuesdayWarm mild day. Snow melting fast. Bodisch boys working on railway line outside our lager-Chuck and i were singing out to Jack Dakzell. Norm and Ian were speaking to them at work. No news – no Fag parcels - no letter cards and tucker about the same as ours.

1st march WednesdayWoke up this morning – heavy snow in night around and trees covered again. I worked with Peter – welcome change after Robert.

5th March SundayFriday mail up – more for me. Sat. Dentist again – we had to run for the train - four of us reached the train just as itwas going toleave – we asked the stationmaster to hold the train up as our Posten was still about a couple of hundred yards down the road – we all caught the train. Arrived back at Lager to be greeted with the news that the spuds had ben cut again -100 grams per man and the meat was short. We talked things over and decided we wanted original ration of spuds, failing that , less hours to work or else all return to stalag –Striking was discussed but rejected. Fisky said Pole ( the Oberfiest) who went down to the Geminde but never returned. Today four men loaded truck but did not see the Pole or Stenzil. Fisky is going toask the Gefroye to bring an officer along – I have been crook all weekend with my stomach and indigestion –heard that Brieslam was being bombed.

6th March Monday

Page 7: Web viewTerrible day yesterday – rain and snow – our clothes are wet through when we arrived back at Lager – heard that Belgerian Govt was over the war

Last night I was pretty crook – pains around my heart – went to work today with Jimmy Fergusson and Len Beazley. Jimmy got Stalag, Len Anmient and I got three days with “Hesz Falle”, and must give up smoking. Fisky and Seprenter went to the Gemende and told the local mayor if they din’t give us food to expect trouble as the boys were all talking that they would rather be back inStalag – we took a sack full of cabbage and a few carrots back to the Lager.

7th March Gefreter is browned off – one man for Stalag,Jim Frank – and now Ian is going back again tomorrow –Yokel and Taffy saw him about a transfer to another party and Norman asked him about getting sent back to Stalag and resume his medical status – he would not hear of it.

8th MarchNorm told the Gefreiter that he was not going to work any more and wanted to be sent back to Stalag.

9th March ThursdayNorm stayed in Lager and had a big row with Gefreiter, but in end had to go out to work under threat of bayonet which was flashed and prodded. Norm stood up to him well and looked as if he had the Gefreiter bluffed. Gef was getting madder and Norm thought discretion better part of valour and came to an agreement that a letter written by Norm and signed by Kdo Fuorur was sent onto Stalag. Norm was out to work – I went to doctors again and was told not to drink coffee –to work onMonday, and back again on Tuesday.

10th March FridayMail up - more for me – parcels up –I got a Jig parcel and book parcel – reading books from the Stalag – more letters and cards for writing. All winter talks about last few days is Anglo American bombing raids and Germany.

11th March Sat- 12 th March Sunday-Quiet day 0 normal weekend except we were told that we had to do our own washing in future as it was forbidden for German woma to do it.

Monday 13th march I was supposed to go to work but the weather was too bad and driving snow all day.

14th March TuesdayDoctors again – he said my heart was still knocking and said I could go back to Stalag – posten chipped in and said to send me to German hospital near stalag. The only vegetables that Fisky could buy were stickombers again.

15th March Wednesday

Spent all day packing – its a terrible job – I would have given anything to be staying with Noel and the boys – have decided not to tell them at home yet about myself.

16th MarchAm leaving for hospital tomorrow – I had all my gear out and repacked – left out two pair of socks and two shirts –a fellow doesn’t like to dish too much gear as we can never tell

Page 8: Web viewTerrible day yesterday – rain and snow – our clothes are wet through when we arrived back at Lager – heard that Belgerian Govt was over the war

how long he will be in this country. Went down for my washing to wash pants – when I arrived back I was told to leave my gear at the Lager and take a change of clothing because if i should have to go toStalag I must come back to the Lager first.

17th march FridayBid cheerio to the boys this morning as they went out to work. I wasn’t leaving until the midday train –Fisky gave me a parcel and a couple of cards which I wrote and left there. Caught train – picked up a Russian at Wdelsdorf – travelled through Hallsteds, Mittelstein , Newade and arrived at Centerbrian – the hospital was close to the railway and had ben a guest house – was taken into the reception room ( originally the bar) and particulars taken by a young girl called Monica, then taken around to the hospital compound for prisoners- barrack divided into two - I was put in one half with a Tommy., a Palestinian and two Froggys – the first two I had met before – the Tommy coming form the sawmill at Wekels dorf - and who had been up to our Lager – he was the Beadie that Harry Brown had spoken with – the Palestinian I had met at Qualisch and the dentists – he was the cook and spoke fluent German. They were just sitting down to a meal when I arrived and a bwl full of stew( red cross) was given to me. The Russians here seem decent fellows –one fellow is the Sanitator - he was learning pharmacy in Orel –Al l Russians do all the work –make the beds (sheets and pillow slip by the way) clean up the barracks, light the fire, fetch cart and water and food from kitchen. The Jerry Posten in charge is a bright little sort and seems to treat every one very well. The Geordie has just had an operation for apendicitus – was in hospital at Neurode – treated very well. The Palestinian is here for the same complaint and the Froggys the same. Warm barracks and clean . Was told to be ready to catch eight o’clock train tomorrow.

18th March SaturdayBefore i left for train was taken over to Jerry’s hospital and had a sample of my blood taken – I hate needles and after when it was over I nearly keeled over. Arrived at hospital at Neurode – three Russians also. Received another needle in tip of finger. I wasn’t expecting this one and it didn’t have any effect on me and later I had to lay on a couch and was bandaged with steel plates were bound round both arms and left leg – and a machine connected to plates was turned on. The little old red hairded sister at the hospital seemed very friendly – giving me a nice smile and spoke some English. Walked back to Centrebourne as train had gone – rather interesting talking with one of the Russians whose home was 150km from Baken in the Cacasus. He spoke fairly good German which he had learned at school. Quiet day – a serb arrived with snow blindness.

19th March SundayAt alf past two in the morning two Italians were brought in – one who was carried in on a stretcher had his nose stopped to keep it from bleeding all the time. Two course dinner today. Just soup then spuds, meat and pickled cabbage. Had a bath in afternoon. Young sister and head cook visited us – very impressed with the cleanness of our room and appearance.

20th MarchVisit from doctor today. I’m to go into Glatz on Wednesday for Xray.Palestinian went into Neurode Hospital to visit boy from Bodisop.

22nd March WednesdayUp early , caught train into Glatz – hospital wasn’t expecting us and we were sent to another ( Luftwaffe) - they couldn’t do anything – after a bit of walking around back at station –

Page 9: Web viewTerrible day yesterday – rain and snow – our clothes are wet through when we arrived back at Lager – heard that Belgerian Govt was over the war

caught train back to Centnabraun. The Palistinian ( Goldberg) left for his Kdo at six – later on four Italians in a very bad condition and two Russians were brought into our room. They were very hungry – the barrack is getting full up and doctor came across last night and the Russians were given their walking tickets. One of the Italians had an operation on his hand and was given chloroform - he nearly passed out.

24th FridayFour Russians went back to their party. Bert Clark and I shifted our beds back into one of the small rooms with the Russian Sanitatos- the two Frenchmen left – one going back tohis Kdo – the other to Neurde hospital for appendix operation – a Tommy from Bodisch and a Serb arrived back fromhospital after operations.

25th SaturdaySix Russians left this morning and two more arrived. Bert and I was peeling spuds for a couple of hours. Bert received Red Cross parcel,Fag parcel, book parcel and some mail from his Kdo.

26th SundayArthur Chadwick ( Hull) received a book parcel – he brought with him three parcels from hospital and he had two here so we are well off for drinks and food. Had a big dinner today – fried spuds, meat roll, onions, eggs, tomatoes and jelly and custard to follow – had bath again. Two more Italians arrived. Weather is very bad – driving wind and snow – been like it for a few days now. The Russian Sanitator, Ivan, is a pretty learned man in pharmacy and chemistry. On Da Salle , one of the Frenchmen who had left here on Saturday paid us a visit – he brought a mate who could speak a bit of English. One of the Itis had made himself our water and coal carrier – we give him bread we have left over and a cigarette now and again. A fellow feels sorry for the Itis and Russians in the condition they are in – we were like it once. Arthur who was a prisoner in Italy doesn’t think much of the It is as they were treated pretty badly in Italy – at times the Wops wouldn’t even give them water. Arthur was telling us about the razor slashes that were making things a bit grim inLandsorf –they were scotch from Glasgow.

27th MondayQuiet day -we haven’t had a visit form the doctor or sister for a while now. The guard here is a great one for talking – he is a Pole - wounded twice and always talking about women. The other guard, Gefer, is very good and they both treat us well- respect us because we are English and clean and well dressed which the sisters also remarked about.

30th March ThursdayYesterday received my food parcel from Kdo –letter to write home enclosed but no mail from home. Early this morning batch of wounded Jerry soldiers arrived here from the front. Getting browned off here – we are in small room and spend most of the time lying down or sitting about. Some of the Itis here from Russian front, some taken prisoner by Jerry in Yugoslavia – one was in Abysina , then to Lylia - doesn’t like the Ausies- woundedat Tripoli by Spitfire – back to Italy then to Yugoslavia. Saw by yesterdays paper that Joe was in Rumania.

31st March FridayWas told late last night that I was going to Glatz this morning by six trains – had to get up and shave – assrived at Glatz HBF and went to Luftwaff. Long after a lot of hanging about. I

Page 10: Web viewTerrible day yesterday – rain and snow – our clothes are wet through when we arrived back at Lager – heard that Belgerian Govt was over the war

was xrayed then had a test of blood pressure – then was examined by two doctors and three student doctors – tested my heart with stethoscope and bound a tube round my right arm and blew it up – also water test.Doctor very decent asking me different questions and in reply to mine said that it wasn’t anything bad but a report would be sent into Laz and Centrerbraun. Going to and from the railway station at Glatz saw Itis prisoners in Jerry uniform. Sister over this afternoon paying us a visit – very nice- another Russian arrived.

4th April TuesdayYesterday doctor was around and gave Bert and Arthur their walking tickets back to Kdo. My report of Xray hasn’t come through yet and I must stay here until it does, in any case I’ve to stay ten days now as there is no travelling on railway until after easter holidays. Today guard arrived for boys also the sanitator for Arthur from Bodisch – he was s Kiwi from Wellington. Now I am here on my own –the only Englishman and about twentyeight Russians, eleven Itis and ine serb. My parcel arrived yesterday, but as usual , no mail.

5th April WednesdayBeautiful day – sun melting snow fast. Some Russians were sent back to Kdos, also five Itis who had refused to peel spuds.I’v had a quiet day –now and again making small conversation with one of the Russians from Kursk was learning to be a teacher. More Russians arrived, some very bad cases here. One Iti is in a bad way – high temperatures all the time and pains all over- he look ready for a bos.I make him biscuitbroth and give him a hot drink. One of the Russians who arrived today has been in hospital in Newerode for a month with a broken back – a truck hit him in the back down in one of the mines.’

6th April ThursdayDoctor around today – fifteen of us being sent away toStalag or Kdos. I’m to go back tomorrow to Kdo – but I don’t know what my report is - doctor that busy I couldn’t speak to him. Report of Xrayis up from Glatz but whether I’m “going gesund” or “ “krank” I don’t know, must try and see doctor tomorrow. Went for walk with four Russians and guard into Kunzendorf – snow disappearing fast. Was speaking with a Jerry who spoke English in Layarith. Terribly cold tonight and started to snow again.

7th April (Easter Friday) Doctor around again , typing out our reports. I asked him whether I was gesund or krank – he said I was krank but not “Schwer” He told me I had a high blood pressure and was not to smoke, drink coffee, nor eat meat or salts , but was to eat a lot of vegetables. When I asked him where I was going to get a lot of vegetables from he laughed – also to do light work. I spent most of the day reading all of Doreens letters.

8th April SaturdayFifteen Russians left at six for Stalag. I’m waiting for my guard at present. The sanitator also went into Stalag for the day.

9th April SundayStill no guard arrived. Ian arrived back from Stalag in middle of night –said that he heard Joe was on Stringanan border. Guard then has called up Wichelsdorf seven or eight times – air raid alarms. Warring fall out all around the district. The ghie gef went away on leave yesterday and tonight the other guard brought his girlfriend into the guards room for a night out. Some time in the night the air raid sirens blared out again.

10th April Easter MondayGuard received a phone call last night from my Kdo saying that a guard wouldn’t be coming for me until after the Easter holidays. I’m real browned off staying here- I would have liked to have been back with the boys for Easter – still. The Italian boy with the fever is still very bad – had right foot and leg as swollen up about three times its normal size and he is in great pain- expect to go into hospital in Newanda Tuesday or Wed. I’ll be glad to leave this place, its bad enough when there is two or three of you together to talk to but on your own it’s rotten – nothing to do and all day to do it . can’t go anywhere, I’ve read all my books and the smell from the rooms that the Russians and Italians are in is unfit – no windows open and body odours and other smells very prevalent. At night the fleas keep me awake for quite awhile and even in daytime its hard to sleep as well.

11th AprilGuard arrived this morning – left hospital at 11.30 – changed trains at Ruttelstein before we left there train had to back out of station as there was an air raid alarm on. Waited at Brnnan for couple of hours – stayed at Russian Kdo. The train left . Bodisch boys travelled by same train , talking to jack Dalzell and Les Balsanine. Around back at Kdo, pleased to arrive back - Norm had left for Stalag a week ago, a Kiwi Sergent?? Had arrived a few days before to work from Ashburton. Stanlly in kitchen now.

12th AprilWent down to doctors today , gave me orbeit after reading through my report – said I could eat anything I Liked , also smoke – gave me medicine ,said exactly the opposite to the doctor at Centabrun. Party of Russians went past Lager tonight , going to Adensbrach, we gave them cigarettes and bread, they looked very hungry. Air raid warning given over the wireless all day long.Parcels up.Noel received his Nov. Parcel.

19th April , WednesdayWorked with Robert on 13th – had a good bludge- 14th worked with Peter and Stan Somerville who i the perfect bludge – his habit is dead slow and stop – mostly stop. On Sunday a civvy and his Alsation captured a couple of Itis in the woods and brought them to our Lager . Party of Russians went past and loaded bound for Adersbach –we gave them loaves of bread and cigarettes . Today len refused to work with Peter and waited with Oyokind. Peter went home in a sulk – Slim, Noel and i worked and once we went to air raid shelter ??? Last Saturday mail up –I got three letters – was I pleased !. Nitzi has just caught a mouse and is parading it around the Lager- she certainly pays for her keep as far as mice are concerned.

26th April WednesdayWorked in Lager last week until Saturday. Fixing up air raid shelter and tidying up – mail up Sat. – more for me- Sunday – usual weekend. Monday Stan and I worked with Peter –stealing logs near silver spoons.

TuesdayRained early on Monday night – wet through and went back to Lager at 9.30. Brennon gang also in. In afternoon Red Cross Commission arrived. Two men from swiss Ligation in Berlin asked us different things we voiced some of our complaints , especially with the Gef. Stopped a bollocking from the Obust. Today slim , Noel, Jack and I detailed to work down at swimming baths cleaning out.

May 14th Sunday

Page 12: Web viewTerrible day yesterday – rain and snow – our clothes are wet through when we arrived back at Lager – heard that Belgerian Govt was over the war

We had a good two weeks down at swimming baths. First week we cleaned out the pond – one day slim threw a girl a cake of Canadian soap – she didn’t pick it up, but called a civvy aover later on the Colonel from the Gomende came and the girl gave him the soap – he came over and asked us what it was as it had printed on it – gift from RC –gift in German is poison. Second week we cleaned baths out and whitewashed them, it was a good bludging job. Last Monday, Slim was sent back toStalag – a new prisoner had arrived. A few days before. Ray Yale – he was a prisoner in Stalag. Everyone was working at “sand grabe” shaking – Ray and I were lame at good talk and Sandel told us to work fixing . Barnsley chipped in and asked him about Saturday –we worked whole day Saturday and was promised following Sta off, but after we worked Stenze=il told us we couldn’t have it. Next morning Stanzil woke me and wanted to know why I didn’t work on Monday. I said I did, then he said why did I mention about Sat. I asked him who said it. Sendel stepped forward and said he did. I told him he was lying – Pop chipped in and agreed with hi. I tried to speak to J.B. but Sindel kept talking loud so I told him to be quiet three times, Stinzel turned on me and said i was a prisoner and to watch out. Feldwebel came that day, Burgomeister was here also and told him one man was causing trouble. Yakma stepped forward and said it was me – chewed Yakims bollocks off next day and called him a f........ Change of gefrates. Two sergeants arrived from oaoer mill near Frantenein and said this was a good party in every way. Last night the new ge wanted Frisky abd me in his room and he asked me why I told the civvy I wouldn’t work when I said that I did he asked me why I did little work. I told him again that the civvy was lying. I said that I had been sick with my heart and that I wouldn’t do heavy work again – he warned me about answering civvies back and any complaints were to go through him. Told me if he hot any more complaints about me he would take me out to work with the bayonet. I told him right throught the talk that I was wrongly accused on Sunday morning. I asked him about going back to Stalag , nothing doing. In afternoon special parade , new orders read out to us about answering civilians back – also of our boots weren’t all cleaned he would have every one out marching – if our beds weren’t done properly the offenders would be up at five o’clock on Sundays while others stayed in bed until eight or nine. If any boots or trousers were left in Lager at night the Gef would have whole Lager up in the middle of the night. We just laughed at him. Smudger smith (Sanitator) asked gef about getting back to Stalag so he could get repatriated. Gef said if you clean my bike I’ll get you back. Smudger refused – Gef got wild and said if two volunteers didn’t do it by seven he would have roll call at eight and lights out at nine also Smudger to go out to work. After roll call we saw Sodd Webell going past and Spraney called him back. Gef had gone out but Panny the posten was there – Frisky told FW all about it, he said lights out were at 10 – only way Smidge could get back was to write to Stalag and if Gef asked for volunteer to clean his bike he hoped someone would do it but didn’y say that we had to . When Smudger was asking gef about going back , gef said I know why you want to go back, you want to get to England. This new gef ahs started out to make himself a nuisance but will find we are a pretty tough crowd. So far we’ve had the first victories over him by seeing FW first.

May 18th ThursdayMonday morning it rained – stayed in Lager and worked in afternoon. Thursday I was sorted out to work with Peter on my own. I said I wanted another man with me and as Gustz didn’t want Noel Stenzil told him to come with me. We found Peter was just our pace , plenty of rests and browned off with extra hour. This morning Pop told Jimmy B and Ray off for bludging and tonight he told Ray to stay in Lager and work.

May 21st Sunday

Page 13: Web viewTerrible day yesterday – rain and snow – our clothes are wet through when we arrived back at Lager – heard that Belgerian Govt was over the war

Yesterday dinner time when we arrived back at Lager Gef was going Ray about refusing to wash and his room, Gef had already used his bayonet on him , hitting him on the rump and drawing blood in his arm. Ray called his bluff with the bayonet and didn’t clean his rom. Harry was backing Ray up and Frisky just standing around saying nothing. Feld webel arrived in afternoon, gave us twenty minutes to hand over excess of lager. Gave over 30 marks and if we had too much chocolate and cigarettes in Lager to put it on table, otherwise it would be confiscated. Then he searched some of our beds and boxes. Noel , Stanley and I were first. Gef took 10 cigarettes and petrol lighter off me but FW gave me back lighter – then everyone was searched personally. Ray Yates had some Russian money taken off him and some of the boys lost photos. Ray was given a talking to by F.W. and warned. We cleared up a few points about what we should or should not do for Gef.

May 29th MondayHoliday. Ray went into Strafe for three days in Sta morning. In Friday we were given pamphlets asking us to volunteer for British Free Corps. We jeered and divided the thing. All we hear over radio is air raid warnings from all over Germany . Thursday , Noel and I worked down at cement loading ash with Peter Czech – good easy job – bought us beers. Lunched at Peters

June 3rd Sat. Good bludging job pulling old flax shed down. Peter and I were the nail boys – he knocked them through boards and I pulled them out – Noel scraped a few bricks and stacked them

June 4th

Gef got a bit difficult again – holding onto our photos until he had looked through them. Wanted Frankie to bring in some coal, Frankie refused. Frisky did it and said he would clean his bike too if he wanted it done. A little later Johnnie said that he would take over pantry, everybody pleased about it.

June 10th SaturdayGreat week for news- firstly we heard that Rome had fallen and our boys had advanced north of it. Secondly the long awaited second front had started – we heard this on sixth. Our troops had landed at numerous points along French coast – jerry workers mentioned different ports and spoke of our heavy losses in ships and men. Ray left on Monday for another party and Bill Woodburn arrived few days later from Strafe to take his place. He had escaped and arrived here in civvies – nine days in Strafe and a pretty bad time. He worked one day. Pop didn’t like him – next day he went sick and got Stalag. Now Gef is a very much subdued man – we have won a few rounds against him amd Ple and Stenzil have had goes at him. Difficult atmosphere in lager with Johnie incharge. Frisky is trying to get back to stalag or change party.

FridayToday mail up but only two or three letters came though.

June 13th TuesdayHeard that Joe is pushing in Russia = boys progressing in France – attacking in Italy. Last night all the big wigs from the Germande were at lager – mayor asked us reason why Frisky had chucked in his job – then asked us what we thought of Gef. Needless to say we painted him black. Later in evening officer came and looked round Lager. We’ve been told if war lasts two more months it will be lasting a long time. I give it six months at most.

Page 14: Web viewTerrible day yesterday – rain and snow – our clothes are wet through when we arrived back at Lager – heard that Belgerian Govt was over the war

June 22nd

Stave heard plenty of prop how we are going in Italy and France – heard boys are near Florenz in Italy , and in France we are advancing. Jerry has started to shell London with a huge gun. Yokel left us – transferred to paper factory at Trantenan – weather very unsettled. T

Tuesday Civvies had a special do on – all persons worked together – good bludge all day – couple of boys did too much work but they always do. Have had first swim in pond – Tish and i went on Sunday morning in rain – very cold. No mail – bag of parcels came through.

June 27Weather thundery, flies wasps and mosquitos are bad in hoards. Hear things are going well in France , heavy fighting in Italy and Joe just started an offensive. Fisky and Frankie started to spread a few lies around about Harry being in rackets in kitchen – that brought Noel and I into it – we tackled them on parade on Sat night and they tried to find excuses , blaming onto one of the civvies – Civvies are browned off with things – having to do guard work about one night a week from twelve until six and work as well. Have been told it will end this summer , some say July/August.

July 3rd MondayFisky and Frankie have been as nice as pie to us – their two- facedness makes me sick – Johnnie and Frisky both went sick –got worse and refused to work. Johnnie was sent to Kdo near Frantenan to take charge of party. Johnnie had been there before and civvies refused to have him in charge – Gef brought him back same day. Tiny Sparks left for flax fabric – order came through that all South Africans were to be sent to a Kdo of their own – we jumped to conclusion that it was a prop camp to try and change their ideas over to Jerry – we heard that in that call for volunteers for the British Free Corps – 180 all told, there were a number of south Africans. The next day after Johnnie came back , Gef took Frisky away to the Kdo to see if he would take charge – he didn’t come back thank goodness, so we are praying that he is staying. Stenzel went to Gef on parade next morning as being the cause of Friski’s going. Frisky was the fifth to leave since Gef has been here.Saturday had terrible job loading and unloading lime. Pansy the guard is very difficult – now he hates us and shows it every opportunity – we’ve no love for him either. Heard Charbourg is ours with big loss to jerry, also Joe has taken a terrible toll round Ninsk. Sunday volley ball , swimming, and cricket – bat made from metre wood and wooden ball. Today i was called into guardroom from parade this morning and stezil politely asked me why I wouldn’t do more work. I said I was doing enough – Stenzil said we were only doing ¼ metre a day – i said that I was still an English Soldier and wouldn’t do more – that we were working on red Cross parcels , not german food – that it was me that he was always at and if he didn’t like the way I worked to send me away –stenzil and Gef wouldn’t hear of it and said that didn’t want to do that. Also said that they weren’t “ Schimping” at me. They wouldn’t come out and speak in front of rest of boys so I walked out and left them. I was pretty wild inside but kept my voice down – after I cooled down I could see the funny side of it – jerry gained nothing by the interview and I lost nothing – on contrary, I could see that we had Gemlude where we wanted them as they couldn’t get more men. They didn’t threaten me with Strafe or mines or even”schinff” me – only wanted to know why I wouldn’t do more work. What is the place coming to . Noel was wild because he should have been in it too and they left him out. They said Peter was an old man and couldn’t do hard work and

Page 15: Web viewTerrible day yesterday – rain and snow – our clothes are wet through when we arrived back at Lager – heard that Belgerian Govt was over the war

that Noel and I should do it – oh yeah ! Worked with Gusty today and had plenty of bludges. Tonight Harry dodger and Frankie had it out with Gef about Pansy denied everything and Harry didn’t get backing he should have.

July 10th MondayHarry has been crook for a week with his throat at present – he can’t eat, drink and can hardly speak – has an abscess at back . Three parties of us – one working at Zaborsch. We have to go through Fikson to get to it and in our part between rocks there is still snow over a metre deep where sun can’t get at it. News is scarce – hear Joe is advancing in centre and North and is close to German border. Jimmy Fergusson returned from Stalag with plenty of Stalag news. Mail up twice last week –I got two letters from Doreen, first for three and half months. Plenty of swimming. Weather very hot with periodic thunder storms - flies are very terrible in woods. Sunday morning had a visit from a jerry general – complete with monocle – had nothing much to say. Peter is browned off and isn’t doing much - of course Noel and I follow suit.

July 20th ThursdayNothing much doing – working up at Zarborsch Patile – get milk every day – berry season opened – woods thick with people – guards are not bothering us so much now , but to make life a hell for Dodger and Harry through the week, always pin pricking. News is slow. France has quietened down – probably making preparations for big push - Joe is pushing ahead now – close to German border – have had two big bags of personal parcels – all told must be about ten thousand cigarettes come into our Lager in two weeks. I got seven letters this week.

July 24th MondayWe’ve been having a bit of trouble with Pansy – he’s making life hell for Dodger and Harry so we thought it about time he was shifted – we’ve been noticing soap disappearing from our washroom so we planted a cake. Pansy took it – we told Gef - found soap and accused Pansy –we have threatened to report it Gef says better when he goes – heard baoys are 15 miles from Paris and Joe had broken through at Lomberg. Mail today – four letters from mother. Sunday morning we had a cloudburst nearly busted up banks of our pond. Rain again today – Heard that someone attempted to murder Adolf – only wounded him – what rotten luck.

1st August TuesdayPlenty of rain - thunder storms every day – still working at Zarborsh – pansy still here - got orders to hand in pay books – we cribbed come of the boys brought theirs – others of us did otherwise. We were threatened with Strafe if we were caught with one in our possession – Peter got married on Saturday – Noel had day off with dinch fall – I had a stiff neck on Sunday but it got better on Monday. Florenz fallen - Joe close to Warsaw.

7th August MondayThree men arrived from Stalag – 2 Tommies, 1 Kiwi ( from 61st , jack Kear) brought great news with them. Sat. Heard Warsaw fallen, Florenz fallen also. Nantes in Brittany ( France) evacuating Krkor. Today heard Krakow fallen . New guard here is alright – Pansy still hanging on here. Sat. Of Zarborsh coming home through woods – we were looking for mushrooms – Noel got separated , took wrong path and got lost from us – we searched round woods twice singing out loud –Istopped Serdill with a panting and asked him – but we couldn’y find Noel anywhere – then I found his foot prints going along a track – so we

Page 16: Web viewTerrible day yesterday – rain and snow – our clothes are wet through when we arrived back at Lager – heard that Belgerian Govt was over the war

decided to go past again to Canteen – at Canteen we found Noels name and arrow pointing home , so we followed expecting to met up with him but at Secho Noel met up with Bittmeir who took him to our Lager – when we arrived hot and tired Noel turned round and said that we had got lost –well, I ask you ??

15th August TuesdayGef is broken – ruptured –new W/off took his place who put Pansy in his place – told him Gef were men like himself. On sat we worked with Peter fixing track up a buckberg – collected bag full of mushrooms. Peter was told off about being three hours away from job picking berries and allowing us to wander around woods on our own, also about speaking to Russian girl – sat heard our boys seventy five kilos from Paris. Farms at Zarbarsh have been broken into nearly every night – spuds, onions, hens and rabbits being stolen – Peter said they were Russians. Heard today of another landing on Southern France at Toulono and ----. New orders through that we are to be locked into Lager all time – more wire going to be put in front of Lager.

August 20th SundayHeard about lading southern France – line 80km deep from Marsales to Nice - in suburbs of Paris – we started on our plonk on Sat afternoon, ours was firewater – two and half mugs put me on my back. I can’t write down here what the boys said i did , but gee it had a kick, Noel and harry were merry also, Len and Jimmy B opened theirs as well. Len was sick and went tobed flat out. Sunday morning Jimmy B had some more and had to rush outside –sick. This afternoon Frankie Shatcliff wanted some – I gave him some of ours – a mug and a half and he was flat out and crook as anything. This raisin and penine wine certainly is deadly stuff. I couldn’t look at anymore this morning. Noel brought me a glass full , but I dived under the blankets. Mail up yesterday - I clicked.

August 24th ThursdayTuesday , Wednesday I worked in Lager cleaning”shouse” out – each day I had over two hours for lunch – swimming – New guard arrived on Tuesday morning –a Pole – he was over two years prisoner in 8B in Tschen. We’re expecting a commissioner from Stalag to give the barracks a search. New orders are coming out every day – tightening up. Last night he told us about Paris which had fallen into our hands and this morning Nandie was up the track – Rumania had chucked it in – Paris was ours and we were 150km from Jerry border.

Sept 3rd SundayThe commissioner arrived – searched us on parade before going to work – found nothing –then shut the Lager staff in kitchen and searched the barracks – wanted to take my winter slippers but Harry talked them out of it – took one or two packets of fags – on whole wasn’t a very close search – a Jock arrived from Fisking party. Tafy twisted his knee cap and after a few days was sent back to Stalag – Dodger went inwith Taff and made arrangements for Ray Yates to come here in charge – new boys all brought good news – 500 men from France just arrived in Stalag - say France finished in a couple of weeks – boys in Luxemburg – taken Netz in assault – few kms from Belgium. Partisans rise in Slovaki. Rumania now fighting against Germany. Capital falls to Joe. Finland now fighting against Jerry – boys 60km from Briessels. Mail and parcels. General view of everyone ,war last few more weeks.

10th Sept SundayThis weeks excitement, the new Jock – weglam fed from the job at Zarborsch –Pop was worried – reported it next day Field Webel came up to job and asked questions – he was

Page 17: Web viewTerrible day yesterday – rain and snow – our clothes are wet through when we arrived back at Lager – heard that Belgerian Govt was over the war

caught a few days later at Adurstrach. Finished up at Zarborsch – now back on Buchberg. This week two jerry high officials left country – Brussels and Antwerp taken also Strassburg. Joe in Kinstadt – Joe connect up with Tito through Bulgaria, cutting off Greece and Crete – 20 divisions of Jerries. Chuck went back to Stalag – his leg is getting worse. Advised from Stalag that we go onto half a parcel and 25 fags a week. The Kdo Fuhrr ( W/off) is an old woman.

18th sept MondayW/off is very childish and does his block very easy – finished up Brick layer and started up as key thug today. W/off threatened Ray Yates with bayonet on Sat. Because Ray refused to wash his room out – decided to do it in end. In afternoon W/off and i had a bit of a blarney over Canadian box, he ended up by tearing it to bits. Split in Adolph’s party – boys advancing over border into Germany – Joe still coming – Vienna done over.

2nd October MondayRain today – day off. Last Sat week two Tommies arrived from Marschendorff – on Monday one went sick with me ( my blood pressure again) both of us got days off – Wednesday the other went sick and on Friday both of them got Stalag. Last Monday two new men from Stalag –one a Kiwi, eric Smith, other a Tommy. Both descent fellows. I had whole week off – on Sat went to Andersbrack to be tested for glasses very unsatisfactory, a haphazard trying on of difficult lenses – I took a pair that I could read by – the number of the lenses to be sent into Stalag and glasses sent out. The W/off and long guard have been into Company for medical exam. Toll guard left today with two Tommies for Stalag and will not return. – news scarce. Joe getting close to Budapest. Czecha are supposed to kick the trains last week – no news of boys in France, except near Kol and parachutists in Holland wiped out. Heard that Jerry had million casualties in France , half million prisoners, other half killed and wounded. We’re still impatient to hear the end of war which we think is any day now – Czechs gave it to end of sept but that is now past – mail up today – one letter from D.

Tuesday 3rd

Rain again – another day off.

Wednesday 4th

Work today – my first time for eleven days – I felt pretty tired out by end of day. Boys making big stink on Western front, we hope this is the final push. Up at 23rd Brucki working – plenty of planes about (not ours) – other gangs said they heard lot of bombing over Halbstadorf way. New Control officer was here today and heard what Harry and Ray had to say about being locked in all day and at night - allowed door to be open into yard st different times.

October 20th FridaySince 4th , two new Jocks arrived – light arbertors, they went on parade one morning to work, but none of the civvies would take them- W/off trying to get them transferred – four other men arrived from Stalag- two kiwis and Chuck and Jeffrey arrived back – every bed was full and Chuck had to sleep on a couple of forms. Chuck had a sitting down ticket and left yesterday to go back to Stalag- I accompanied him as far ad Holbraked and then I went onto Bainca to see about glasses. Bramman didn’t appeal to me much – built on hills and strest all cobbled. Lot of new orders coming out about door being locked – all Red Cross stuff – food and cigs had to be transferred out of the Lager – now in to room above Shandies and every

Page 18: Web viewTerrible day yesterday – rain and snow – our clothes are wet through when we arrived back at Lager – heard that Belgerian Govt was over the war

day Ray has to go there and draw red Cross stuff that we need for one day only. Hearing plenty of planes, air raid alarms and bombing – today there was a prolonged bombing somewhere. Heard that Waldenburg had been bombed – seven thousand planes over Breslan, Hungary capitulated – tonights guard told Harry that guards have an order to leave at an hours notice if a truck comes from Company. We’ve been hooting at U/off for all the orders being read out and local mayor has also been going him. Noel and I have had a couple of weeks bludging, fixing up the tracks around the hills – now back on Buchberg – we’re expecting Czechs to crack any day – all civvies from 18 to 60 have to report to Krone tonight.

October 27th SundayWeather very cold now- fogs, rain yesterday ( day-off) we are back repairing paths again. The two light arbertors have gone out to work pending word of theri transfer , they are working with Sendel and doing a good days work. News is scarce now. We are feling the pinch of half parcel and now have six more issues, two being bulk , which will be light and two weeks without fags. Hear air alarms now and again, and choose our own company. Comradeship here is terrible, its getting the case of everyman for himself.

Nov 5th SundayThis week a new KF came – a young fellow of 25 –fall of great ideas and talk - first parade lasted over half hour telling us what a good fellow he was and slinging a few orders about – very childish, we try to humour him as much as possible and say Ja Ja to what he says except last night when he was talking about doing more work – we soon told him what we thought and what would do – he had his lady friend in his hut all weekend – had a day off with rain, still working on path – progress very slow –what we do repair the carts only make worse agaij. Ray went to Stalag for visit. On Sat had a close shave. UF thought we had something between Nandie and us and searched washing - fortunately he only looked in one basket and today he searched the duty washing but he was disappointed.

10th November FridayOn Monday boys got talking about Sat afternoon work and there was plenty of talk as to what to do - finally decided, three Kiwis put their names in for transfer toa Grube – the five Aussies put theirs in for transfer to an Aussies working party – Kiwis wanted to put a list in for transfer to Kiwi party, but I was against it – as we are all Englishmen and it was bringing the different nationalitiesin too much, just whatJerry wants. Noel, Harry and I decided tosit tight. Harry and Noel ( acting Vertraus man, while Ray was in Stalag) went and saw Burgemeister on Tuesday, who said that the order was through about sat afternoon work. Stenzil wanted to know what was the matter – he said W/off had nothing to do with work. Yesterday Frankie saw Pole who said that there was no afternoon work – new Tommy arrived yesterday – he had a row with W/off about going to work today. Last night control officer came about midnight and caught W/off in his hut with girl frien – hell to pay – heard today that W/off is going. Ray came back on Wed night with plenty of prop. – Greece nearly finished and the news about west and east fronts. Had our first fall of snow on Thursday – not very much , but cold.

15th November WednesdayOn Sat we didn’t work in afternoon – the order is out but local council are holding it up. U/off is a very quiet man now except yesterday. He is quite faling to us, telling us about his exploits in Poland and Russia where he was in SS – now we know a bit of truth about M Graves. A new corporal arrived here to work yesterday. U/off got the two Jocks ( who are

Page 19: Web viewTerrible day yesterday – rain and snow – our clothes are wet through when we arrived back at Lager – heard that Belgerian Govt was over the war

still here) to go down to sawmill for sawdust, while there they went to Kdo before then and U/off rasied hell about it, saying he is the only one to give orders . i arrived back sick in morning. Pole brought me hack and Tanky ( another sick) and i went down to Doctors in afternoon. Doctor wasn’t very interested in us and gave us work – two new men arrived from Stalag ( light workers) and no beds or blankets for them – slept on forms. U/off rang up immediately to have them transferred to another party. U/off also got order through that Ray Yates (Vertanaseman) had to leave and at night U/off told Simpson ( who he wanted to take charge of party) that Harry ( cook) was going to be shifted as the two of them caused too much trouble for him. Noel was appointed Vertanensman. U/off asked me if I was going to work and I said I would like a day off which he let me have. Stenzil and guard went down and saw Gemande about latest happenings and none were expecting – all the powers in Genchen at control off rip this afternoon. Things are all to pot now. Kdo would be better if it was broken up.

21st November TuesdayHad day off last Sunday -worked Friday and Sat – still not feeling best. Went sick again on Monday and got Stalag or else light worm job in a factory. Two Jocks left last Friday. A new Tommy arrived today ( another light Arbuter) we have three light arberters, three more working in wards and now me. U/off said that all light arbeiters are going to a vertianaman Doctor near Traitenau next week- I don’t know what is happening to me. We heard today that Stalag received 2810 parcels.

22nd November – 28th Nov (Tuesday)Bludged around Lager on 22nd& 23rd - then about half past eight on Thursday –Simpson , taffy Evans and myself got orders to be ready to leave by first train in morning – great to do – packing and sorting out our stuff – Noel , Harry and gef went down to get washing and Red Cross stuff – but Gef forgot key , unable to get parcels or fags. Harry got a loan of a couple of packets for me so I was lucky to be able to take a few fags. Friday morning first train at half past six – bit of a to do. I got on last carriage and Gef and other two in middle of train – carriage door locked so I was unable to walk through – at Adersbach I saw the ticket girl and started walking along station to find others, who were also doing the same –Gef yelled at me for getting separated, but later he repented. Left train at Tdantena and went to company – met Les William (Westport who was also going into Stalag on a visit – he is vertandsmein at Hechlesdorf. Caught train agin and had another wait and change of trains at Ruhlankig , then again at Hurschberg – then at Goilitz – long walk from station o stalag – called in at Hospital first. Doctor ( jerry) graded us, I got B2 ( light arbeit) –arrived at stalag – searched ( very lightly) –reported to Auferhome – then into Barrack 40B. Met Chuck and Stan Barrett – had a good yarn. Sat morning deloused – reported to office – put intobarrack 33B – saw game of soccer in afternoon – heard band – not bad either – about 15 instruments – saw the blowers in action. Sunday saw rugby match between French and Kiwi team – Kiwis lucky to win . Monday saw doctor ( major Downing) – who tested me, said I had blood pressure a little above normal, nothing to worry about – but couldn’t help me as I was already classedas B2 by Jerry – I had also met Noels mate, Allan Horsley who is trying to help me with things.

Thursday Nov 30Chuck took ill on wed and was transferred to Con hut and I took his bed in 34B - mucking in with Allen Horsley and his two amtes, Ron and Stan who have also a blower. Great crowd of fellows in 34A, mostly kiwis, few Aussies and one or two Tommies. One Tommy has been a prisoner five months – caught in France on D day. He is only 19 years old , and a bit homesick on it. I have been trying to arrange things but no success so far. I was down to go

back to Kdo again tomorrow but saw officer who have had it put off until Tuesday, so that I can see the oculist ( Stalag is great) -i could spend the duration in here quite well – games of football every day – have heard band practising a lot and yesterday was speaking to the sax player ( as South African) - had a blow on his sax , but felt very strange on it. Chuck introduced me to Des Young, Jimmy Fergusons mate. Also talking to Jock Bergess last night, he worked in Farmers back in ChCh – he is also Snowy Meyers’ mate – plenty of trading goes on here ,with Russians, Serbs, French and Italians. Pictures expected to open up again next Monday. Quite a number of ChCh men here. Eric Phillipson, whose sister used to work in J Bs 9 John Burns), stan barrett from J B’s.

3rd December SundayPlayed a game of rugby last Friday – our side won 18-6. I’ve been stiff and sore ever since , a couple of nasty grazes on my left knee cap. Ground is too hard for rugnby. Yesterday was NZ team versus rest of NZ – poor game, wind too strong. Today was international soccer game – French Kdo team versus British team 6-2 in our favour. Received word today that I’m going back to Kdo on Tuesday. All N.C.O’s have to prove their next Thursday. Ray Yates has been brought into the cooler here from Strafe Kdo –story is that he was beaten up by one of the guards.

Dec 10Sunday -4th, Monday -packing my gear , deloused in afternoon. This is a joke as a fellow is deloused and has to go back to his same barracks amongst the fleas and bed bugs. Bulk issuew, but I didn’t draw any as the office was going to give me a chitty to draw a parcel on the job. Allan and Stan were still looking around an NCO but no luck. SlimSomerville gave me a box of records to take out to boys. Speaking to Ray Yates in red leg pen. He had been bashed up by three Jerries out on the Strafe Kdo. Said goodbye to Ron Robb, Ham Gordon, Allan and Chuck and Stan Barrett. Tuesday up at 5.30 and across to Aufnatane at 6 – caught train at 8 and arrived back at Wehielsday about 2.30. Boys surprised tosee me back. Since then have been working with the light workers down at Gemende doing odd jobs. Went to Nohran ( next village to under Wehelsdorf for sawdust, saw Fred More, Bert Clarke , David Rolly Blaire at sawmill. I don’y know what will happen to us light workers, Control Officer arrived and said if we can’t be sent back to stalag we will have to go to a Wehrmacht doctor for regarding. The spirit in the Kdo now is a bit tense at times, evidently the lack of regular parcels are having effect.

17th Dec SundayStill no prcels although we have a chitty for 121 units of bulkwhich is on the way. We four light workers have been cutting wood at school ( that day we heard air raid alarm, school was emptied of children in about five minutes, could hear ack ack and bombing in the distance). Working over at house by farm – the first day we cribbed about the heavy work on light rations, but James scoffed at us and stinzel reminded us how slow we had been cutting wood at Gemende – we worked here for 3 ½ days digging, taking our time – although one day the Pole came and went up harsh for standing around – threatened him with Strafe and cutting out his ration cards. Weather very cold and snowing. We had to give up a certain amount of our clothing – few swindles worked old and torn clothes being put in.

December 31stSunday Bulk Issue arrived here on sat before Xmas - had been down at station since Thursday - brought up and Noel issued half parcel for that week- next day Sunday, issued out a full parcel - giving us plenty of tucker for Xmas - break- changed aspect in whole Lager,

everybody was dashing around and in great spirits – we ran competitions over holidays and Harry did a great job in kitchen, meat every day – Xmas day we had fried bacon and spuds for breakfast(in bed for those who wanted it), roast pork for dinner with macaroni and custard to follow – and fried steak and chips for tea. Everything went off well – heard on Tuesday that Jerry was pushing Yanks back to Luxemburg and Belgium . Light arbertes working down at Gemende. Ryan carrying fire wood up to top floor. Friday finished track of bricks at station. Yesterday four of the boys went on hard drive with some of the civvies- arranged more competitions for this weekend – snowing heavily again –days have been very cold and black lately. Heard Jerry advance is stopped and Yanks counter attacking. Good dinner today – pork rissoles and macarronni custard to follow.
