November 2015
Dear Friends,A friend of mine recently posted some beautiful pictures of the trees in her area, ablaze with autumn color. They were stunning: huge trees that have been growing tall and full for decades, covered in hues of yellow, red and orange. While many of us were in awe of the beauty, one dear friend commented that the beauty of autumn reminds her always of the ‘death’ that is to come. She experiences autumn as a reminder that the trees will soon be empty of all signs of life and barren through the cold winter season. Another member of our discussion commented that perhaps we could consider not death as the beautiful leaves fall, but a time of rest and renewal before new life bursts forth before our eyes.
The change of the seasons is a blessed reminder to us of God’s continuing magnificent work in creation, even when we least expect it or recognize it. With each day, each season, we can see the hand of God at work around us. As the seasons change outside, so do the seasons change in the life of the church: another opportunity arises to consider God’s work in our lives and in the life of the church.
The season of Advent that arrives at the end of the month (already!) is a season of preparation. Let us consider the beauty of the lights and the beauty of the season in our prayers, our study of Scriptures, our coming together, as we journey to our Christmas celebration. Before we know it, new life will burst forth before our very eyes!
God bless,
~ Pastor Laura

Dear Folks: Thank you so much for your generous contribution to our recently held Harvest Wine Tasting fundraiser for Meals For The Needy. We are very grateful for your generosity and help in feeding the hungry in Bristol, and thank you for your continued help and support.
Sincerely,Cheryl Yetke

Thank you to all who worked, baked, cooked, donated, bought and prayed for great weather for our tag sale. We had a wonderful time, great fellowship, felt a real sense of community and were quite successful. We made close to $2,000 to help with the current expenses of Asbury.A Big Thanks to Geri Beveridge for her leadership of this event!
The Yankee Peddlar Fair Committee is seeking to borrow a round braided rug for the fair. If you have one available, please contact
Geri Beveridge or the church office.
New to the Yankee Peddlar Fair this year will be "Ye Old Christmas Shoppe". We are looking for Christmas treasures to be donated. Donations can be dropped off to the church during the hours of 9am-1pm daily, or by calling Geri Beveridge at 860-614-8478 to make arrangements for pick up.
Also new to our fair this year, is Asbury's Specialty Boutique. We are looking for donations of scarves, vintage jewelry, very gently used handbags, clutches, shawls, and the like. Please contact Karren Grayson.
Box Tops for Education
My name is Avery Costello and I am collecting Box Tops for Ellen P. Hubbell Elementary school. I am in Mrs. Chesnes’ third grade class. Last month I was the top Box Tops collector in the whole school. I collected and handed in 489 box tops. My school gets money for each box top and the school uses the money to send us on field trips and to buy equipment.
I have set up a donation box in Wesley Hall if you are interested in helping me. I would like to give a big THANK YOU to those of you who have already helped.

Those who roasted turkeys: Mrs. Law, Mrs. Nicholas, Mrs. Lamont, Mrs. Reed, Mrs. Eric Anderson, Mrs. Hunt, Mable Lewis, Mrs. Everett, Mrs. L. Hart, Mrs. Granger (all did A1 jobs)
Those who cooked vegetables: Mrs. Pond, Mrs. Lautenbach, Mrs. Bert Stone, Mrs. Bryce, Harriet Mills, Mrs. Arnurins, Mrs. Anna Norton, Mrs. MacDonald.
Pies – solicited by Mrs. Ewd. Lilley (45)
Turnips – donated by Harry Stone. Turnips were field variety and cooked away so that more had to be secured.
MenuTomato Juice Cocktail – celery-olives (ripe and green)
Roast Turkey with DressingHomemade Cranberry Sauce
Mashed PotatoesTurnips
Creamed OnionsBread and ButterPie with Cheese
Coffee
Second servings for all who wish.
Tickets – should be out about 3 weeks before supper date. Parcel them out in small lots – just whatever seller thinks he can sell – and establish a deadline a week before date of supper. Pick up unsold tickets at that time. Unless prospects are good, and redistribute them to new sellers or to those who want more – workers who buy tickets will eat at 3rd table. Check on this or there will be empty places at both 1st and 2nd tables.

ObservationsNot much bread and butter is used when three vegetables are provided. The electric mixed mashed potato is especially popular. Empty paper boxes should be provided for turkey carcasses which can be sold. A turkey dinner should never be served in connection with a Fair. Too much work. Run them separately.
Vegetables – it is usually necessary to pick up the vegetables from the homes where they are cooked. They should be ready an hour before serving and enough cars should be detailed on this work. There are unavoidable delays – a half hour isn’t enough. Potatoes should be peeled outside.
Turkeys – arrange to have them brought in when possible by the ones who cooked them. Three quarters on an hour is not too much time to allow for collection.
Tomato juice can be chilled in the cooler of the A&P if turkeys are bought there.
Celery – should be delivered the day before for preparation Dishwashing can be done by men to ease upon kitchen work. Aprons can be borrowed at no cost from A&P.

We skipped a few summer meetings due to the heat and Senior family vacations, but WE’RE BACK1
We have a lot planned the rest of the year, but we need more people to join us including men. Right now we have one man in our group that at one time had many couples. They had a lot of good times, even trips up north to York Beach and other fun places. Please consider joining us so we can get back to doing that.
We may be calling some of our old and new members with more info on our group, so be ready with your questions. We meet every Thursday at 10:15 am for everyone of retired age.
Also, don’t forget to put your loose change in the Penny Jug out in the Narthex every Sunday morning.
