The SOAS Centre for Cultural, Literary and Postcolonial Studies (CCLPS) presents its
2nd Annual CCLPS Postgraduate Conference
From the Speech to the Act: Performativity on the MarginsFriday, 13 June 2014, | B104 Brunei Gallery, SOAS | 9am – 6pm
‘The secret is unspeakable. The words are the vehicle, not the goal. The Truth is not
something that is said but something that is lived, beyond any concept. Words allow men to
become a sage. But in the very moment he becomes a sage, his words fade away.’
Jodorowsky (2006, 173)
The word and the body, sound and movement can shape realities on the margins of neoliberal
homogenizing discourses. Linguistic utterances and acts can create social realities; they have
transformative power and speak directly to both individual and collective identities. The 2014
CCLPS Postgraduate Conference will explore the potential of performativity (both as speech and as
action) in the construction of alternative realities within the globalized scenario.
