Hot Air

Scientists have discovered that sound travels faster in the summer

than in the winter. In hot summer air, sound travels at 1,266 feet per second. But in cold air, sound travels as slow as 1,066 feet per second. So that means sermons preached in the summer will naturally be shorter, right?Summer Worship will remain at 10:30 a.m.

throughout the summer months.

The Board of Deacons continues to collect canned goods and non-perishable food items for the Safety Net in Scranton.

Marilyn Casal had surgery at Geisinger Medical Center,

Scranton and has been moved to Allied Rehab and we continue prayers for healing. Helen Weaver has moved and we will update her address when she is relocated.

Dear Pastor Forbes and Congregation of The Presbyterian Church,

My mother, family and I would like to give you our heartfelt thanks for all of your prayers, concerns, cards, and calls and Pastors’ visits to the hospitals (both here and in Philadelphia). We truly feel all of you have helped my mother have a positive outcome during the long haul of travelling to Philadelphia, all of the various tests and finally the bypass surgery.

Thank You and God’s Blessings to each one of you,

AbrahamDon't Forget GodRobert Brault said, “A vacation trip is one-third pleasure, fondly remembered, and two-thirds aggravation, entirely forgotten.” Much of the hassle involved with “getting away” comes from packing. What do we need? How can we save space? Where are the items we haven’t used since the last vacation?

Inevitably, we forget something — sunscreen, umbrella, diapers. Vacationers miss these items almost immediately and quickly replace them. Do we also often “forget” the Bible at home? Do we leave our prayer and worship routines behind? Do we take a vacation from our faith?

We may not notice those missing “items” as quickly, but they’re crucial nonetheless. God never schedules a “getaway” from us. This summer, take a vacation with God, not from God.

The next edition, both large and regular print, of “Our Daily Bread” is now available in the vestibule or Fellowship Hall.

In the 1960’s, the folk-rock band “The Byrds” popularized the song, “Turn! Turn!” It climbed to the top spot on Billboard magazine’s

top 100 chart and gained worldwide popularity. People seemed fascinated by the lyrics of the song. Interestingly, though, except for the last line in the song, those lyrics are from the Old Testament book of Ecclesiastes chapter 3, verses 1 – 8.

“To everything, there is a season “ proclaims the writer of Ecclesiastes” a time for every purpose under Heaven (vs 1). This writer then lists some of the seasons in the human experience: birth and death, gain and loss, tears and laughter, mourning and dancing. Just as the seasons in nature change, so do the seasons in our lives. Our circumstances in life never stay the same for too long.

Sometimes we welcome change in our lives. But often it is perplexing, especially

when it involves the loss of a loved one or a pet or a house in a fire. And yet, even at those terrible times, we can be thankful that God does not change. “I am the Lord,” God says

through the Old Testament prophet Malachi, “ I do not change.” (Malachi 3:6)

Because God remains the same, we can rely on God through the shifting seasons of life whether they occur in the Spring or the Summer, or the Fall and even in the Winter. God’s presence is always with us according to the Psalmist in the 46th Psalm. God’s peace has the power to guard our hearts according to the apostle Paul (Phillipians 4: 7)And God’s love provides security for our souls as stated in Romans 8: 39. Martin Luther stated in his wonderful hymn:

A mighty fortress is our God,A bulwark never failing;

Our helper He amid the flood.Of mortal ills prevailing.

Remember, God’s unchanging nature is our security during seasons of change!

Flag Day is June 14th

Every time you put a flag out, you’re saying, “I’m an American and proud of what this flag represents.” The flag stands for “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” for religious freedom, and for other rights that many nations lack. The flag represents our history and our goals for a better future for all.

One of the great heroes of the early days of our country was John Paul Jones. He was a naval officer and to him went the honor of displaying on his ship, for the first time, the national flag of the United States. Francis Scott Key, the author of "The Star-Spangled Banner," composed four stanzas for what became our national anthem. The last stanza is as follows:

O, thus be it ever when freemen shall stand,Between their loved home and the war's

desolation,Blest with victory and peace, may the heaven-

rescued land,Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us

a nation.

Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, and this be our motto, - "In God is our trust."

And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave,

O'er the land of the free, and the home of the brave.

The Gift of YourselfIf you could only sense how important you are to the lives of those you meet; how important you can be to the people you may never even dream of. There is something of yourself that you leave at every meeting with another person.

Happy Father’s Day Happy Father’s Day means more  than have a happy day.

It means I love you first of all;  then thanks for all you do.

It means you mean a lot to me and that I honor you.

Father’s Day was first observed in America in 1910. In 1923 the third Sunday of June was set as the official day, and in 1924 President Coolidge recommended its national observance. Today it has a fixed place in the calendar of special days in our country.

But devotion to and pride in fathers does not need to wait for official approval. As long as there have been families, love and respect for fathers has existed.

Where World Peace BeginsWhen Mother Teresa received the Nobel Prize for Peace, someone asked her what the average person might do to promote world peace. Her answer was simple and true. "Go home," said the kindhearted nun, "Go home and love your family." If we do not have peace in our own hearts and reveal that peace by exercising love toward the
