Writing: 2. Write informative text to convey ideas clearlyEarth Science:5ES4. Energy from the Sun heats Earth unevenly, causing air movements that result in changing weather patterns. As a basis for understanding this concept: 5SE54.c. Students know the causes and effects of different types of severe weather.

5ES4.d. Students know how to use weather maps and data to predict local weather and know that weather forecasts depend on many variables.

The students vary in social groups within the school such as member of athletics, technology, student government, band, and robotics clubs.

Technology Inclusion Teacher will use the document camera and iPad to model the student project. Students will create a journal regarding the day’s weather, record the weather, and take a photo. The journal entry will be sent to Edmodo Group Weather or Not for recording. The teacher will retrieve the other journal entries and as a class, create a table recognizing weather patterns. Students will work in groups to write a summary of the U.S. pattern viewed.

Procedures (includes anticipatory set, direct instruction. Guided practice, and independent practice)

Anticipatory Set:Teacher will gain student interest by showing a short 3 minute United Streaming video on extreme weather. 1) What do you recall about climate? What type of climate does California have? 2) What creates the weather? (review)3) What type of weather was shown in this video? Would you like to be caught in a storm such as this? Why or

why not?Direct Instruction1. The teacher will review with the class the lessons regarding weather studied so far. Students will define weather, climate, precipitation, sleet, snow, and cloud formations.

Guided Practice2. The teacher will model how to fill out the Kids Journal for weather, using a document camera projected onto the widescreen TV.3. The teacher will take the class outside and have them look at the clouds and weather. The class will record what type of clouds are viewed and view the class thermometer to determine the weather.4. The class will fill in a small journal entry writing about the weather and cloud pattern.5. A student will take a photo of outside the school / sky to place into the photo section of the journal entry.6. As a group, using the document camera and tablet, the teacher will model how to upload a journal entry to Ednodo using the app and Edmodo export link. 7. The teacher will bring up the Edmodo group page for Weather or Not8. 10 journal pages from all zones of the U.S. will be portrayed to the class to record the temperatures and weather information. Together, the information will be recorded on the whiteboard at the front of the room on a chart labeled location/weather/temperature.Group work:9. Students will gather in groups of 4-5 and discuss the weather patterns from the 10 pages viewed.10. Students will create a table of the information and write a summary critique of the weather patterns across the U.S. Students will collaborate with team members to write one group paragraph summary.Publish and Extension:11. This is an Internet project that will be kept up for 3 months. Each day, students will be responsible for writing a 1-2 sentence journal entry, recording the weather, taking a photo, and exporting the page.12. All students in the class have student numbers. Their day of writing will correspond with their student number. Example: Student 1 will write on the 1st day of the month. Over a period of 3 months, each student will be responsible for 3 journal entries.

Extention:For further education, students can write weekly summaries of the U.S. weather. This information can be tabled or graphed for a 3 month analysis, if desired.

Online Community Option:Because Weather or Not is an online project, it is possible to find a “buddy class” that would like to Skype regarding the weather. For best results, find a school that is in a different climate zone. Compare the weather. Compare pictures. Students may ask the other students about their weather and patterns.

Assessment Formative assessment:Teacher will assess daily journal entries for precise sentences and accurate weather recording. The teacher will allow an export to Edmodo after the journal entry has been approved by the teacher.Summative assessment: Student paragraphs and tables will be assessed using a teacher created rubric. The summary will include information regarding the 2 sentences written in the journal. A sample rubric is on the next page.

Risk Analysis Most of the risks involve technology. The iPad will need a full charge so that it stays functional. A cord will be brought to school in case it needs charging. The document camera could malfunction in which case an alternate camera can be borrowed from a neighboring classroom. Kids Journal has a support email link. The support team answers promptly. If the Kids Journal page fails to export, a photo can be taken of the Kids Journal page to be uploaded to Edmodo. If the Internet fails, the students will not be able to export the information but they can still take part in creating a journal page regarding the weather.
