CLOSING REMARKS

Page 4: View Program Book

At this year’s Awards Luncheon I will bepassing the baton to my good friend MattMarquardt, Senior Vice President of UrbanEngineers, after about ten years as Chairmanof PENJERDEL Council. A transition isalways a good time for retrospection.

During the last ten years PENJERDEL hascontinued, and I think expanded, its role as

one of the principal voices in bringing regional focus and solutionsto issues and events facing our tri-state region, a role that began inthe 1950’s. We have presented thought provoking and engagingprograms and symposiums on our waterfronts, transportation in allits modalities, higher education, healthcare providers, ourinfrastructure challenges, water resources, our environment, and thegreening of our region. We have sponsored political debates andprovided forums for our members to learn more about major eventsand issues, such as the 2009 national stimulus program and thisyear’s Papal visit. We also have never been shy about pitching in tohelp others in important projects – an example is the energy hubeffort in which this year’s Citizen of the Year honoree Phil Rinaldihas been so instrumental.

I will have presided over ten Awards Luncheons in which I have hadthe honor of helping to recognize a number of outstandingindividuals and companies, from Dan Polett and Southwest Airlinesin 2006 to this year’s esteemed honorees. Along the way we alsotook the time to recognize Women of Vision, Projects of the Yearand our First Responders.

Most importantly, though, I have been proud to be part of anorganization that has, for sixty years, consistently brought civilityand thoughtful discussion and focus to issues that often produce heatbut little light. I have appreciated the privilege of being a part of allthis and, as I hand the reins to Matt, I know the best is yet to come!
