To the Volunteers of Rebuilding Together: I really and truly appreciate the improvements to my home. The improvements have enabled my home to be safer and more enjoyable. Thanks for the painting, carpentry, insulating, concrete work and electrical repairs.

On behalf of Adaptive Living Incorporated, I want to sincerely thank you for arranging to have our group home at High Beam Court completely painted. It looks fantastic and our residents are thrilled! Because of your generosity, our organization is able to survive and continue to house 9 disabled adults who live independent lives and contribute greatly to our community. Please know that we are greatly indebted to you for your time and efforts.

VOLUNTEERS HELP VETERANS, AND OTHERS, GET THEIR HOUSE IN ORDERRyan Condillac, a veteran, knows the importance of giving back. Two years ago, Ryan, his wife and two young children were living in a home where the gutters leaked, the outdoor decks were rotting, the sliding doors would not latch and the drywall was damaged by water leaking in from the roof. Plus, plumbing and electrical problems were a concern. Ryan Condillac did not have the financial resources to pay for the repairs. His wife heard about Rebuilding Together Howard County and applied. They were accepted into the program and an army of volunteers made all the home repairs free of charge. Knowing the impact these repairs had on improving the quality of his family’s life, Ryan decided to give back. This year, he became a Rebuilding Together volunteer and worked tirelessly to assist the same team who repaired his home. He paid it forward working with them on the house of a 93-year-old woman who needed major repairs to allow her to live (like Ryan) in a home which is now safe, warm and dry.

HOMEOWNER STORY: CONNIE PIERRO

Volunteers from Hamel Builders repaired the home of Anthony and Connie Sue Pierro. Connie Sue, 62, suffered a spinal stroke Aug. 21, 2010, and is currently in a wheelchair. She cannot walk and lost the full use of her left arm. Her husband Anthony, 64, was forced to take early retirement to provide her with care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. While on a low fixed income, the couple struggles to pay living expenses, hospital bills, medical premiums, prescription expenses, doctor bills, physical therapy payments, and has nothing left at the end of the month to finance the repairs to their home of 22 years.

Hamel Builders enlarged the entrance to the couple’s bathroom to make it wheelchair accessible. In addition, they replaced the worn carpet in the living room, dining room and hallway with new laminate flooring that will increase the ease of her wheelchair mobility. A fresh coat of paint was applied in several rooms. The HVAC system was serviced which will drastically decrease their monthly heating bills. Finally, Hamel Builders repaired their sliding glass doors to enable Mrs. Pierro to gain access to an outside deck to get some fresh air.

Mrs. Pierro said, “My husband and I feel so fortunate to have been chosen by Rebuilding Together Howard County for free home repairs. We are grateful to Hamel Builders for providing us with a home that is wheel chair accessible and for the necessary service repairs which were too expensive for us to obtain given our financial situation.”

Mrs. Pierro is happy to spread the good news and encouraged others at her physical therapist’s office to apply to Rebuilding Together Howard County. “The application is available on the web site and only takes 10 minutes to complete,” said Mrs. Pierro.

“ “Your organization sponsored a project on behalf of our family member, Will Koesters, on Saturday, April 26th. My husband and I were fortunate enough to be able to meet and work with the incredible team that gave of their time and caring. We want to share with you our impressions of the day and hope to convey our overwhelming feeling of gratitude. The work that was accomplished was a huge leap forward for Will. The end result is beautiful and allows him to spend time tackling other smaller items that he can. I am sure you will see the photos but our goal was to find a way to make his living situation better. Your organization, sponsors and wonderful volunteers made this possible and have made a significant positive impact in all our lives.

Dear Board Members: It is hard for me to put into words the thanks I am feeling for all the work that was done for me. Zach and his team were great and all seemed happy they were working for me to live in a better home. I know all of you work very hard to help our community.

GIRL SCOUTS ACHIEVE SILVER AWARD

Wednesday evening, June 4th, eight Girl Scouts from Troop #354 received their silver award at a ceremony held at the Hawthorne Center in Columbia, Maryland. The silver award was as a result of their successful partnership with Rebuilding Together Howard County. The girls worked to provide free home repairs to a group home located in Columbia.

The Girl Scouts picked this project to give back to the community and revitalize the neighborhood by providing home repairs to those in need.

Rebuilding Together Howard County provides free home repairs to low income homeowners. Towards that end, 27 homes were repaired on April 26th, 2014. Girl Scout Troop #354 was one of several Rebuilding Together sponsors to include big names like Hamel Builders, Harkins Builders, Honeywell, and several local businesses and churches. Although, the Girl Scout troop was the youngest volunteer team by far, they exhibited outstanding organization and leadership skills to accomplish their goal. They spent the day painting the interior of the home. According to Pat Williams, Troop Leader, “The girls were very excited to take on this huge project and give back to the community.”
