Dear Beloved Parishioners of St. Mary Magdalene Parish, Six years ago when I heard that Bishop Olmsted was searching for a new pas-tor for St. Mary Magdalene Parish I said to myself, “What a great parish! Whoever gets assigned there is going to be one lucky priest.” I had no idea that I would end up being that lucky priest. For the past six years I have had the great privilege of serving this wonder-ful parish as its pastor. It has been the joy of my life to serve you. The love and support you have offered me these past six years has been phe-nomenal. I am a better and holier priest because of all of you. Please

know that I will miss you and pray for you often. Change is never easy. I heard a funny expression once that I often think of during a time of transition: “The only person who likes a change is an infant.” Change disrupts our normal routine and forces us to confront the unknown. In a time of change we must make a decision to walk by faith and not by sight. If we trust in the Lord and in His plans, we will never be disappointed and we will always receive exactly what we need from the God who loves us. When I was ordained a priest, I made a promise to God and His Church to be obedient to Bishop Olmsted and his successors. Obedience is a beautiful gift because it frees us to go wherever

God calls us. As an obedient son I came to Gilbert, and as an obedient son I now leave for Flagstaff. I am sad to say goodbye to all of you, but I am excited for what the future holds. I am excited for what God has in store for us. I have heard it said that if a priest is good, everyone should have a chance to have him, and if a priest is bad, then no one should have him for too long. Hopefully, I have been a good pastor to all of you and that your perception of this change is that you are commis-sioned by God to share me with an-other parish. I think the same could be said about the parish community. It is my perception that God has commis-sioned me to share the joy of pastoring you with someone else.

I’ll See you in the Eucharist a Farewell Message from Fr. Will Schmid

I am very pleased that Bishop Olmsted has chosen Fr. Chris Axline to follow me as your new pastor. I have known Fr. Chris for many years. I was the seminarian assigned to host him when he first entered the seminary, and I was the priest assigned to mentor him as he entered the priesthood in 2013. He is also a familiar member of this parish, having been our parochial vicar for his first year of priesthood, and as a priest in residence offering weekend assis-tance for the past four years. He loves this parish very much and he is excited to assume this new role within the community. I have watched him grow into a fine priest, and I am confident that you are in good hands. I am pleased to pass on to him the respon-sibilities and the joys of being your pastor. When I was leaving the seminary for the final time to come home to Phoe-nix for my priestly ordination, a semi-narian friend of mine from another diocese in the United States said to me, “I’ll see you in the Eucharist.” What a beautiful expression! There is a real connection we share in the Eucharist. As long as we remain in Christ, we re-main in each other. Even though we may be separated by time and space, God is not bound by such dimensions. Through Him, with Him, and in Him, we share in a real union with each other. It comforts me to know that every time I celebrate the Mass you will be with me,

and every time you all participate in the Mass, I will be with you. It brings great joy to my heart to know that no amount of time or space could ever separate us from each other. The Eucharist really is the heart and soul of our faith. It is my hope that I have brought you closer to Jesus in the Eucha-rist. St. Mary Magdalene’s words to the Apostles after her encounter with the Lord on Easter Sunday were, “Vidi Dominum (I have seen the Lord)!” I echo her words as I move up north. Whenever people ask me about my time at St. Mary Magdalene Parish, I will say the same words as our magnificent patroness, “I have seen the Lord!” Thank you for showing me the love of Jesus Christ. Please know that I remain faith-fully yours in Christ, Fr. Will (pastor emeritus)

The royal guards pursued the criminal into the Skałka (St. Michael’s Chapel of the Wawel Castle) with orders to offer no quarter and carry out the King Bole-slaw II of Poland’s verdict of death. However, upon entry to the house of God, the guards saw that the man kneeling before the altar was no fugitive at all but Stanislaus Szcze-

panowski, the Bishop of Kraków. The men laid down their weapons, turned around, and left their bishop in prayer, for they would have no part in execut-ing an innocent and faithful servant of the Lord. Little did they know this would be the last time they would see their bishop alive.

Born on July 26, 1030 in the southern Polish town of Szczepanów, Stanislaus was the only child of noble and devout Polish landowners, Belislaus and Bogna. Young Stanislaus received a parochial education and, despite the certainty of a comfortable future, an-nounced to his parents as a young child that it was God’s will that he forego wealth and privilege and enter the priesthood. However, unlike many successful families of the time who ex-pected their first sons to continue the family business, Belislaus and Bogna could not have been more supportive of their son’s pursuit of holy orders. Stanislaus was tutored in Latin and scripture; then, when old enough (likely about 15 years old), he was sent to Paris to study with the Benedictines and assist in the rebuilding of the Ab-bey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, which had been all plundered and damaged by Viking raiders throughout the 10th century. Stanislaus returned to Poland around 1055-1060 with a choice: take his final vows or assume ownership of the fam-ily business. Stanislaus’ decision was made without hesitation – God called him to the priesthood – and so it would be. He sold his family’s land and distributed every penny of his in-heritance to the poor before being or-dained by Lambert Sula, the Bishop of Kraków. His meteoric rise within the Church took fewer than 10 years. Dur-ing this time, Stanislaus was made pas-tor and preacher of the cathedral and parish of Czembocz, appointed vicar-general of the diocese, then “elected” Bishop of Kraków upon the death of Lambert (at that time, bishops we not actually elected but selected by the king; however, Stanislaus refused the election unless it was blessed by Pope Alexander II, which it was). Bishop Stanislaus wasted no time in making his mark on the Church, work-ing with Rome to bring papal legates to Poland for the first time and leading

the establishment of several Benedictine monasteries to continue the Christianization of Poland (which began just 100 years before). Stanislaus was an outspoken and un-apologetic critic of the new King Boleslaw II, a man of unin-hibited lust, violent cruelty towards women, and guilty of using the poor as untrained, front-line cannon fodder in his wars to consolidate his power within Poland and expand the nation’s borders. Boleslaw grew tired of Stanislaus’ championing of Krakow’s sick and poor and his attempts to oust corrupt Polish bishops; likewise, the Bishop had no time for immoral men who placed themselves before the Church. Hostilities were inevitable - call it the two toughest kids on the block…sooner or later they’re going to fight. The first reported confrontation between the bishop and king was over a (seemingly) simple land dispute. Stanislaus purchased a plot of land for the diocese in a handshake deal with a local man named Piotr, then, upon his untimely death, Piotr’s heirs lied and said no deal was ever made and they wanted their family’s money back. What happened next is beyond what anyone could have predicted. In the absence of Piotr or a contract to confirm the sale, the three year quarrel was brought to the king (there were no courts

so, yes, the king would actually adjudicate disputes like this). Anyway, Boleslaw happily ruled against his adversary stating the facts as presented were on the side of Piotr’s family – so sorry, if the bishop only had a witness. Accord-ingly, and in the absence of any other option, Stanislaus would just have to produce the only witness to the sale. Legend and the accounts of 18th century historian and French Benedictine monk, Augustin Calmet, Stanislaus asked the king for three days to produce Piotr to verify the land had been sold to the Church. The king and his mi-gnons scoffed at the clearly delusional bishop and gladly granted him the three days. Stanislaus retired to the cathe-dral, prayed non-stop for three days, then dressed himself in full pontifical vestments and led a procession to Piotr’s grave where his wooden casket was exhumed. And there, Bishop Stanislaus implored Piotr to rise…and he did. The formerly deceased Piotr was brought before the dumb-founded king and proceeded to testify that he had, in fact, sold his property to the Church, and then scolded his

equally flabbergasted children for their deceit. Left with no other option, the humiliated king reversed his decision and dismissed the case. Later, Stanis-laus asked Piotr if he wished to remain alive; but having done his duty to his Church, Piotr chose to return to his grave and the arms of God. For a brief time after the miracle of Piotr, Boleslaw was repentant for his sinful ways – but you can’t teach old monarchs new tricks, and the angry king relapsed into his life of sin. Stanislaus continued to voice his oppo-sition to the king’s depravity, cruelty, and abuse of royal power, and in 1078-1079, excommunicated the king de-spite viable threats of retaliation. Pub-lically disgraced, Boleslaw accused Stanislaus of treason, alleging the bishop was party to a Bohemian-German plot to overthrow Boleslaw and replace him with his brother, Wladyslaw. And in the medieval courts of Europe, treason carried only one sentence – death. Infuriated at the disloyalty of his troops, the king entered the chapel and elected to carry out the sentence himself. So, without a trial or a single witness to corroborate the king’s accu-sations, Boleslaw “the Bold” un-sheathed his sword and, in the pres-ence of the Lord, brutally executed Stanislaus. Wishing to deny the bishop a Christian burial, Boleslaw or-dered the body dismembered and thrown into a well on the castle grounds. Legend tell us that under the watchful eye of four eagles perched above the water, Stanislaus’ body mi-raculously reintegrated and appeared in the chapel, once again thwarting the sinful King Boleslaw. Post Script Poland’s first martyr was buried in the chapel where he was slain then moved to Kraków's Wawel Cathedral where Stanislaus remains today. In fact, al-most every Polish king between 1333

and the end of the monarchy in 1795, was crowned while kneeling before Stanislaus' sarcophagus. Stanislaus was canonized on September 17, 1253 as the first Polish saint, and in 1969, his feast day was moved from May 7 to April 11. King Boleslaw, fearing for his own life, was forced to flee to Hungary and al-legedly spent his final years as a peni-tent in a Benedictine abbey – his brother, Wladyslaw, was crowned King of Poland. There are no modern biographies of Stanislaus of Kraków; therefore, what we actually know him and the varying accounts of his death are a matter of legend, incomplete research, and faith (including the king murdering Stanis-laus while celebrating mass, and his actual date of death of either April 11 or May 7, 1079). Pope St. John Paul II, once the archbishop in the “See of St. Stanis-laus” (Kraków), wrote in a 2003 letter to the Polish Church that St. Stanislaus “proclaimed faith in God to our ances-tors and started in them...the saving power of the Passion and Resurrection of Jesus Christ...He taught the moral

order within the State, reminding even the king that in his actions he should keep in mind the unchanging Law of God.” That’s a good lesson for us all. Saints Stanislaus the Martyr and John Paul II, pray for us.
