The Berlin Conference
• Increased competition amongst European powers to take advantage of both natural resources and the markets for goods in Africa.
• Instead of fighting --> divided it up amongst the most powerful countries in Europe.
• Done at the Berlin Conference in 1884, called by the German P.M. Otto von Bismarck.
• Attended by European government representatives but there were no Africans
Before the Berlin Conference• African borders as we know them did not exist• At the conference the borders were decided
upon with no consideration for the people living in these areas
After the Berlin Conference
• The new borders cut through over 170 tribal or ethnic groups
• Divided natural cultural and language groups and caused enormous social problems
• Families and neighbours were split up and found themselves living in different countries with different rulers, countries and names
• 46 different countries at end of the Scramble for Africa
