How do you teach children the true value of money?

A tricky question with a number of answers, but if you caught a recent interview with Gor-don Ramsay in the Telegraph, his answer is that none of his four children will receive a penny of his £113 million fortune in his will. Ramsay’s motive? He wants his children to work for themselves and make their own for-tune not live off someone else’s work.

Such is Gordon Ramsay’s commitment to helping his children understand the value of money that he said “they don’t sit with us in first class. They haven’t worked anywhere near hard enough to afford that. At that age, that size, you are telling me they need to sit in first class? No, they don’t.”

Gordon Ramsay is not the only wealthy individual who will limit their children’s inheritance - others who have pledged the same include Bill Gates, Warren Buffett and Simon Cowell.

It is difficult to know how tongue in cheek Ramsay’s comments are or in-deed how legal it is to cut the children completely out of a will! Ramsay has certainly worked hard, but is it wrong to share that wealth with others?

The Bible describes a God as so generous that he gives freely to all who ask him. In fact the gift of eternal life is a free gift won by Jesus on the cross. The promise in fact is that our generous heavenly Father will share the whole of his fortune with us when we die and we don’t have to work for it - it is a free gift. It is in fact the biggest gift that we can receive.

But before we completely abandon Gordon Ramsay, there is something in what Ramsay says. The Bible also tells us that the gift of free life does re-quire each and every one of us to value that gift personally. We have to make up our own mind and respond if we want the gift. Just because the generations before us built us a society largely on Christian values doesn’t naturally make us Christians in this generation - that requires a response from us in a life given to God in service.

Nutley Windmill

We had our first open day on 26th March with a glo-rious warm sunny day and we had 130 visitors, a great start to the season. Unfortunately there was only Robert and me there to cope with them. It is becoming a serious worry, lack of volunteers on open days. Our next open days are on 13th and 14th May, National Mills weekend

organised by the Mills Section of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) where many mills through out the country not usually open, are open.

Then at the end of the month we are open for the Spring Bank holiday 28th and 29th May. In June we are having a working week, from Saturday 10th to Sunday 18th, we will be carrying out a major refurbishment of the mill, during that week we are having a Cherry Picker from the Monday for the week. We are replacing some of the weatherboards on the sides of the mill that have become damaged over the years. They were put on in 1971/2. We will be treating the Mill and all three barns with preservative, plus the electricity completed in the Granary (new Visitor Centre).

It is to get everything ready to celebrate caring for the mill for fifty years next year, from 1968 to 2018. Wealden District Council have kindly giv-en us a grant to carry out this work, first time we have asked them for help. We are also asking Sussex Mills Group and Friends of Argos Hill Windmill for volunteers during this working week. We also would be grateful for any help Nutley people can give. We have a long list of jobs to be done during that short week. Even someone good with the Barbecue!

We are planning the grand opening of the Granary and re opening of the mill probably on National Mill Weekend 12th May 2018. The above works may give us problems with the open days, during this summer, it will largely depend on the weather, we have not had a good summer for many years, so I am hoping this is the year!

Nutley War Memorial

Hall 200 Plus Club Nutley is very fortunate to have such a large Village Hall that can accommodate a hundred people seated at tables: the kitchen has 100 each of crock-ery and cutlery to cater for big events and two additional rooms for smaller groups and

meetings, the main hall has the benefit of a large stage and dressing rooms. Maintaining it to its existing high standard is an expensive undertaking. The 200 Plus Club aims to raise funds to help with these expenses. It works like this: Any individual 16 or older or group may become a mem-ber for a subscription of £12 per year. Each member receives a number which is entered into a monthly cash prize draw. There is no limit to how many numbers any individual member or group may have. 50% of our in-come is available to the Nutley War Memorial Hall and in recent years the club has contributed towards the ceiling insulation (keeping heating costs down), the new Hall door, a cooker and water heater in the kitchen and new vacuum cleaner. 50% of membership subscriptions are paid out in three prizes each month. Recently this has averaged 1st £35 2nd £21 and 3rd £14. All win-ners are notified in writing and results are published in the Nutley Parish Magazine. The more members the more prize money and more funds avail-able for the Hall. New members may join at any time and numbers go into the draw immediately upon receipt of subscription payment. For an appli-cation form call Niki on 01825 712465 or pick one up in the corridor of the Memorial Hall.

A Letter from the Bishop of Horsham Dear Friends,

'Thy Kingdom Come' is a phrase that trips off the tongue of Chris-tians every time they pray the Lord's Prayer. It sums up the pur-pose of Jesus and of his body, The Church. We exist, with Jesus, to build the Kingdom of God. We do that, in part, by seeking to trans-form the unjust structures of socie-ty and conforming them to the in-tentions of God. We also do it by sharing our faith, hope and love with others. However we help build the Kingdom of God, we must do it in partnership with God and so pray as Jesus taught us: Thy Kingdom come. Prayer is what ensures our partnership with God. Without it, we risk trying to establish not his Kingdom, but some lesser vision of our own.

Thy Kingdom Come has become the title and focus of a worldwide wave of prayer during the period between Ascension Day and Pentecost (25th May - 4th June, this year). Every one of us is invited to join in this wave of prayer that more people may come to know, love and follow Jesus - and so become joyful fellow-workers in building up God's Kingdom.

There are countless ways to join in this worldwide wave of prayer, as churches, as families or groups, or quietly as individuals. Last year, many churches hosted day-long events embracing many different kinds of cor-porate and individual prayer. I was privileged to share in several. This year a website has been launched: www.thykingdomcome.global. I urge you to visit it if you can and to discover how you can best be a part of this wave of prayer, whether or not your church is hosting a special event. With thanks for our partnership in prayer.

+Mark, Bishop of Horsham

Getting Value from a Voluntary David Bailey

Holiday commitments mean that I shall be at the organ on just two Sun-days this month, the 21st & 28th May. The following voluntaries will be played after the 9.15am service.

Sunday, 21st May Postlude – Alexandre Guilmant (1837 – 1911) One of the organist greats of the nineteenth / early twentieth century, this French composer is all about style, virtuosity, improvisation and large or-gan works – toccatas, sonatas and extended organ symphonies – specifical-ly designed to be played on the very sizeable romantic organs of huge French cathedrals.

This delightful piece is not quite in that league (and neither is the organist!) and sounds really effective performed on an organ of Nutley`s size. Played Allegro (fast) it has a strikingly vibrant opening and closing section, with fast moving quaver passages, punctuated by sharp, staccato chords. The middle section is no slower, but slightly more lyrical and reflective in style.

Sunday, 28th May Heut` Triumphiret Gottes Sohn – JS Bach (1685 – 1750) On the Thursday previous, we will have celebrated Ascension Day, which commemorates the Ascension of Jesus into heaven. It is often customary for churches to mark a mid-week festival on the Sun-day before or after the occasion, and this piece has been specifically com-posed for Ascensiontide.

It`s bright and rhythmical, full of vitality and movement, with quavers (short notes) weaving their way all through the piece, underpinned by a

strong and solid pedal part.

* * * * * Michael Stephens-Jones, a choirboy when Bill Kemm was Vicar of All Saints, Hertford, has won an organ scholarship to Selwyn College, Cambridge, from 2018. Before he goes to Cambridge he has a gap year with Tewkesbury Abbey and the Dean Close Foundation, the school Bill Kemm attended.

trees which are not subject of a Tree Preservation Order, fewer types of advertisements with deemed consent and restriction on the types of devel-opment which can be carried out without the need for planning permission (permitted development rights), including roof extensions, cladding, satel-lite dishes on front elevations and some types of extensions.

I have written before about our iconic red telephone box outside Nutley Stores. It is likely that the Parish Council will refurbish the structure and it will house a defibrillator and shelves for the free exchange or borrowing of books.

Newsletter from Chairman of Maresfield Parish Council Each year we hold the Annual Parish As-sembly and this year it will be held in Maresfield Village Hall on Wednesday 10th May at 7.30 pm. This is the meeting when the Parish Council invites the public to hear reports from Parish, District and County Councillors and other organisa-tions in the Parish.

We usually arrange a speaker and nominate a theme for part of the As-sembly; this year the subject is: ‘Communications – a two-way process’. It is proposed to facilitate a discussion to try and identify areas where the Parish Council can improve its own communications and how its Parish-ioners can be encouraged to engage in this process.

There will also be the opportunity for parishioners to ask questions and to express their views on what the Parish Council has (or has not) been do-ing. No votes taken at this meeting are binding on the Council although it should consider them at its next full meeting. Also, for the Annual As-sembly, we produce an Annual Parish Report in which we record the re-ports from local groups and organisations of their activities over the last year. Please email your reports to the Clerk by the 5th May at the very latest.

You may be aware that Wealden District Council is preparing a new Lo-cal Plan which it hopes will be ready for adoption in 2018. There have been delays but a draft is expected to come out for consultation within the next month or so. We have been assured that there will be no provision for any additional new housing development in our Parish beyond the 50 dwellings in the current Plan (of which 48 have already received planning permission). Extensions, brownfield site redevelopments, replacements and affordable housing for rent may be permitted subject to planning pol-icy. The protection of the Ashdown Forest will continue to operate as a major constraint on new development within Wealden.. In March Wealden District Council adopted revised Conservation Areas and these included a substantial increase in the Maresfield Conservation Area. Additional planning restrictions in such areas include control over demolition of unlisted buildings and structures, control over works to

At our recent meeting we welcomed again Gilly Halcrow who gave her talk “The Sheltland Bus” which was accompanied by slides whilst she told us the story about the brave Norwegian sailors in their fishing boats who kept links open between occupied Norway and Britain during World War Two taking agents in with supplies for the re-sistance and escaping refugees out. Not only did they have to face sub-Arctic storms in the North Sea but also the might of the Nazi war machine with Tirpitz, looking for them. Our next meeting takes place on Friday 5th May when our speaker will be Glenda Law talking about “Street Furniture”. Our meetings are open to anyone over the age of 50 and you will be made most welcome should you wish to come along as a Guest (Try be-fore you Buy). The entrance fee is £2, which covers refreshments. Nutley Preschool Parish News

I start by saying a tremendous thank you to all our parents, grandparents and children who were able to come along at the beginning of April and help spruce up the Preschool Garden. We spent nearly a whole day there and managed to get most of the work done! This included building a new, 2x5metre sandpit, installing two tractor tyres planters filled with herbs, painting the fence, obstacle course, cleaning, trimming and

more. Our garden is such a wonderful space and we are pleased to make it really suit the needs of the children. The sandpit is so big if anyone would like to donate play sand to help keep it topped up, please do!

The Little Deers were very keen to be a part of the Horticultural Spring Show this year, the children made beautiful pictures from leaves, twigs, etc and glitter. All the entries were lovely to look at and we thank the Hor-ticultural Society for letting us be a part of their event once again.

The Summer term has started now, and I am very pleased to report we now have 32 children on our register- this means 7 members of staff who work various shifts throughout the week, are now employed. We are so excited to be in a good position to provide early years education to all of these children. We are also very excited that the majority of our Little Deers will carry on within Nutley and attend Nutley C of E Primary School.

This coming month we have two big fundraisers - on May 13th we have our Quiz Night, with the excellent Helen and Tony Lovell as returning Quiz Masters. Can you win the Trophy this year?? Come along and enjoy a dinner and dessert for only £70 per table of 8 or £10 per person. Cash Bar available all evening and all proceeds go to Preschool. Contact Kirsty Hillen (07590 766786) for tickets or call into Preschool.

On May 28th, there are seven Mums who will be braving the Monster Mud Run, voted the muddiest obstacle course in the UK! A 5k run with over 35 challenging obstacles, last time it took us 2 hours, and a lot of team work to raise just over £800. This year we are aiming for £1000 and a shorter time! If you can sponsor or donate every penny is greatly appreciated by all our Little Deers. Online at btmydonate/events/muddylittledeers, pop into Preschool and ask for a paper form or give me a call. Thank you in advance!

Prayer in the Village

As a newcomer to Nutley I decided to attend the church’s Lent course. The second week was quite challenging as it asked us how we show our love for God in the community?

In my previous church I had started a scheme, where we would pray for certain roads each month in the parish. So that these roads knew we were praying for them we would post a letter informing them. A few days later we would visit, in twos and would ask the inhabitants if they had anything specific they would like prayed about.

It was really amazing to hear the answers and frequently the list for prayers was quite long. It was a way of connecting with the community and hear-ing the difficulties that many are going through.

Having chatted with Nick (the vicar) we felt it was worth exploring the idea and would like to invite anyone interested to hear more about it, to come along to a meeting on Tuesday 16th May at 8.00pm at the Vicarage. Do get in touch with Nick if you’re planning to come.

If like me you are being challenged about the way you show love in the community then please do come along. Maybe you can deliver the letters or commit yourself to praying at the time people are visiting. Would you like to join the team visiting? We would love to see you.

Nutley Village Day Needs You!

Nutley Village Day (Fete) needs more volunteers to become members of our organising Committee. If we do not get help from the community the Village Day’s future may be in doubt. Even a little of your time or skill could help save this important community event.

Nutley Village Day has been running now for over 30 years and with thanks to all committee members and volunteers over the years it is a very successful event. The objective of the Village Day is for the village to have fun and be a platform for village organisations (and ourselves) to raise funds, linked to this outside organisations and stalls return year after year. The funds we raise ourselves are used to run the Day, the Bi-annual Village Party and distribute to Village organisations (This year we have handed out over £500.00 so far).

Whilst many of you help prior to and over the weekend setting up, run-ning stalls and taking down, and we truly appreciate this, the committee spend time during the year preparing for the day. Recently after many years of dedication and service we have had a few longstanding Commit-tee members step down and the committee now stands at just five mem-bers. We are therefore in need of new committee members.

To be a committee member is not a demanding role and we do not ask for an onerous commitment. We meet approximately once a month from No-vember to June for about two hours in an evening to plan the next event. Also we do what we individually can do on Village Day weekend. We are interested in all help and skills, including someone who would be interest-ed in being our Treasurer. (We are not a registered charity, but do present our figures annually in a basic double entry format).

All that is needed is your enthusiasm and a little of your time. It is im-portant to stress that any time you can afford to give would be welcomed. Please consider joining the committee.

Village day this year is Saturday 24th June and for those who do not want to join a committee but do have time to offer during the build up (22nd, 23rd), the day itself and take down (25th) this would be most welcome.

If you are interested in joining the Committee, please contact us through Meryvn Evans on 01825 712955

mation, please contact Brian Porter (712462). We are studying Luke’s gos-pel. We start at 10.30am with coffee and elevenses.

Church Cleaning

We had a wonderful hardworking team in the church on Saturday 8th April for the annual Spring Clean. It was amazing what dirt lay behind the radiators etc even though we give a general clean every two weeks. Floors were washed, chairs and all woodwork was polished, the candlewax was removed from the carpets and no cor-ners were missed. Thank you everybody for your efforts – the results are amazing Rota for May May 5th Barbara Newson and Brenda Sharpe May 19th Carole Morley and Sally Button June 2nd Kirstie and Fraser Milne
