Vicar’s Letter Nick Cornell Seemingly by accident, the last two movie choices in the Cornell household (Martian, Cast Away) have been rather similar. The central character sets off on a journey and ends up deserted on a remote location. For Tom Hanks in Cast Away, the location is a tropical island with a few FedEx packets washed up from his plane crash and plenty of coconuts. Matt Damon, stranded on Mars, braves cold, a lack of oxygen and food after a sandstorm that leaves him stranded as the rest of his crew scramble to the relative safety of deep space to head home to earth. There’s nothing particularly new about these stories - previous generations heard stories such as Robinson Crusoe and Swiss Family Robinson. Such stories have provided opportunities to explore important issues. The earlier novels explored relationships; the people were not alone on their islands - how would two cultures react to each other? For the more modern stories, isolation and loneliness are the issue. Tom Hanks finds company in a mock friend - ‘Wilson’ - made of a football that’s washed up on the beach. Matt Damon establishes email contact with earth. A timeless theme emerges in every version of the story - will there be rescue? Will we emerge safely from our struggles? Now the need to get the magazine to the printer’s means I haven’t finished watching the Martian! Will Matt Damon be rescued? I don’t know. A di- lemma is emerging within the story. Is it worth putting the lives of others at risk to rescue him? Is it worth the financial cost of rescue? Yesterday, as the EU launched its own probe to explore Mars, reports stated that the cost of the EU space budget is over a billion euros. A Mars rescue is expensive! Now I don’t know Matt Damon’s fate, but these stories’ appeal is that they mirror our own experience. One minute, life is good, the next we are on our own unsure of our future. Jesus tells us life is like that and that should not surprise us. That was his own experience - a cruel death and abandon- ment. But that death was to rescue us. A Mars rescue may cost millions, but our rescue cost Jesus his life. Jesus death on the cross was in our place - he wanted to bring us home back to the arms of a loving God and Father.

Seemingly by accident, the last two movie choices in the Cornell household (Martian, Cast Away) have been rather similar. The central character sets off on a journey and ends up deserted on a remote location. For Tom Hanks in Cast Away, the location is a tropical island with a few FedEx

packets washed up from his plane crash and plenty of coconuts.

A di-lemma is emerging within the story. Is it worth putting the lives of others at risk to rescue him? Is it worth the financial cost of rescue? Yesterday, as the EU launched its own probe to explore Mars, reports stated that the cost of the EU space budget is over a billion euros. A Mars rescue is expensive!

Acting Archdeacon of Hastings

Congratulations to our Vicar, the Revd Nick Cornell on being appointed Acting Archdeacon of Hastings. For the next couple of months he is undertaking ex-tra responsibilities while the diocese seeks to ap-point a permanent Archdeacon to follow the Vener-able Philip Jones, who retired at the end of January.

An Archdeacon is a priest who looks after part of a diocese, working in close collaboration with the Bishop. The Archdeacon has a number of important public functions which are themselves each part of a network of relationships within the church. He is responsible for: rep-resenting their parishes to the Bishop, and the Bishop to the parishes, guid-ing Rural Deans in their ministry, presenting new deacons and priests for ordination, inducting ministers into their congregations, advising on parish outreach into villages, towns and cities, advising on disputes and griev-ances, care of church buildings, furniture and churchyards, annual Arch-deacon’s Visitations, including admission of new Churchwardens.

Nick will continue to be minister to the parishes of Maresfield and Nutley, but will also be juggling Diocesan responsibilities at the same time along-side plenty of meetings and travel! We wish him well!

Home Groups

The Midweek Home Group will meet at 10.00am at Treetops, Brian & Wilma Porter’s home, on Thursday 14th April, and at 10.30am on the 28th at David Board’s home, Ardross. We will be continuing our studies based on Hebrews chapters 11-13 using them to con-sider faith with reference to Old Testament leaders. If you would like to join us, or for more information, please contact Brian Porter (712462).

Tuesday Home Group. On Tuesday 12th April we shall meet at 11.15am at 25 Portman Court, Uckfield, the home of Miriam Gibbard. On April 26th at 10.30am we shall meet at Jean Kemm’s home, Holtye, Nether Lane. We shall be studying Psalms 122-125.

Newsletter from Chairman of Maresfield Parish Council

The planning application for 25 houses in Maresfield submitted by Rydon Homes was recently ap-proved by Wealden District Council and we wait to hear when the appli-cation for 20 units by Asprey Homes will be considered by Weal-den’s planning committee. If this is passed it means that there can be

only 5 more totally new homes built in Maresfield under the current WDC Core Strategy.

Wealden District Council is working on a new Local Plan which will have substantially increased new housing numbers for the District for the years up to 2037; because of the need to protect the Ashdown Forest very few of the additional homes will be in the north of the District with no further housing development proposed for our Parish.

It is time again to bring to your attention the Marjory Pegg Annual Awards for Services to the Community:

When Marjory Pegg left Maresfield in September 2003 for her new home in France, the Parish said goodbye to someone who had been enthusiasti-cally involved in community life for over 30 years, including a number as Chairman of the Parish Council. It was decided that each year a salver would be presented in her honour to someone nominated by the residents of Maresfield Village, and in 2012 this was extended to the whole Parish as the ‘Marjory Pegg Awards for Services to the Community’. Sadly, Marjory passed away in April 2014.

Many people help to build the fabric of village life in many different ways – such as by running local businesses, organising social clubs, serving on committees, giving their time to support local events and being a good neighbour and friend.

Should you wish to submit a nomination for the 2016 awards, please write a few short paragraphs in support of the person you are nominating, and email or post this to the Parish Office by the 15th April 2016 at the latest.

Again no apologies for urging you to occasionally look at the Council’s web site - www.mares HYPERLINK "http://www.maresfieldparish.org.uk/" HYPERLINK "http://www.maresfieldparish.org.uk/" HYPERLINK "http://www.maresfieldparish.org.uk/"f HYPERLINK "http:/0/www.maresfieldparish.org.uk/" HYPERLINK "http://www.maresfieldparish.org.uk/" HYPERLINK "http://www.maresfieldparish.org.uk/"ieldparish.org.uk - but do also take a look at some of the other village web sites such as the new Fairwarp web site www.fairwarp.org.uk and Maresfield Conservation Group www.maresfieldconservationgroup.co.uk

We still have a number of vacancies for Councillors on the Parish Council particularly to represent Maresfield Ward and the Clerk and I would wel-come inquiries from anyone who would like to know more about how they might fulfil this worthwhile community role. Contact the Parish Clerk on 714555, [email protected].

Thank You I should like to thank everyone who has been so kind and thoughtful following my recent knee operation. The numerous phone calls and visits have been very much appreciated. Although things have not progressed as well as the first knee op I am hopeful that it will not be long be-fore I have a 'spring in my step' .

Local Government News March 2016

Council Tax

It is now confirmed that Council Tax will rise overall by about 3.5%. East Sussex County Council, which spends 70% of your tax, has agreed to raise it by 3.99%, the highest level allowed by the Government without a referendum.

The Police and Crime Commissioner has put up the police precept by £5, which is 3.4%. On February 11th, the Fire Authority confirmed a rise of 1.99% and Wealden Council will also increase by 1.99%.

There will be some cuts in services but not by Wealden which has man-aged its finances very well. County's reductions will not be as bad as feared because we have used George Osborne's voluntary additional 2% precept for Adult Social Care and at the last minute the Government gave us another £2million so we were able to ease the impact of the cuts. The Fire Authority are in the middle of an imaginative efficiency programme. The number of callouts to fires is less than half of what it was ten years ago so we are able to redirect our resources. Currently, firefighters are helping more with road traffic accidents and we are looking at how they can help with ambulance services.

Not Spots

As we all know our local mobile phone connections and internet are at times haphazard. County have spent millions on improving broadband speeds and this programme is nearly complete but the end result for many has not met expectations. Aware that many have problems with connec-tions, Wealden Council are carrying out a survey and asking residents to give their feedback by clicking on www.wealden.gov.uk/mobile and inter-net survey .

Nutley Preschool Playgroup

Happy Easter to all our preschool children, their family, friends and the whole village too! I do hope you are enjoying a nice break from the normal routine and perhaps some special chocolate treats. It’s a great time of year to see family and friends and enjoy the delights spring time has to offer.

We have very big and exciting news from Nut-ley Preschool to tell everyone about- We have been awarded a £10,000 grant from the Big Lottery Fund to upgrade our garden space. We are incredibly excited to see this happening, as although we have recently updated the balance beams, the rest of the space needs some TLC and updating to be the best it can be for our children. We already have one of the largest outdoor spaces in Sus-sex for a preschool, and once this work is competed it will be second to none. There will be a play lodge to use as an outdoor classroom so the chil-dren can be out there no matter the weather, as well as a new surface area for bike and trike riding and much, much, more. Please spread the word to family and friends who are looking for a preschool in Nutley or surround-ing villages and towns, as this will make us very attractive to a wider audi-ence and help our numbers continue to grow!

Meanwhile, inside the Hall, the children have had the opportunity to meet a Community Police Officer, a Nurse and also our Reverend Nick Cornell has popped in. Interaction with these adults that help us really helps the children in Early Years to look outside their toy box and get a glimpse into the bigger world. The children also enjoyed the delightful Easter Service at St James the Less on March 18th, thank you to the parent helpers who pro-vided extra hands to get the children there safely, it was a lovely service.

Right now, our annual Bunny Hunt is in full swing at Ashdown Forest Gar-den Centre in Duddleswell until April 10th. Please do pop over and for just £1 your child can enter the bunny hunt- tick off the bunnies and claim a chocolate prize! Of course, there is also the garden centre, shop and café to explore, so something for the whole family.

Ashdown Forest Decorative & Fine Arts Society

Would you like to spend an afternoon in good company, listening to stimu-lating talks with tea and biscuits thrown in? If so, join us at AFDFAS on the second Thursday of the month at 2.30 pm in the Me-morial Hall, Nutley.

Jacqueline Hyman BA (Hons) (Textile Design) ACR will be our speaker on 14th April, with a talk intriguingly entitled ‘Sticky Tape, Moths & Men, the problems they cause and the remedies I use’. Jac-queline Hyman, is a lively and en-thusiastic speaker on radio and tele-vision, a renowned textile conser-vator and accredited Textile Con-servation member of the Institute for Conservation: member of the Panel of Conservators for Heritage Council of Ireland, who runs her own textile res-toration studio in Cheshire. She will demonstrate how to protect and care for our most treasured possessions – anything from hanging tapestries to wedding dresses: samplers to altar-frontals: lace to flags and banners: dolls to costumes. I am sure this will be an informative lecture, as we all will have suffered moth damage at some time – not to mention with sticky tape and men!

In May, our talk will be ‘Sculpture in the Landscape’ given by Laura de Beden, landscape artist and garden designer.

Please come and try us out – we are a welcoming and friendly group. We also have Days of Special Interest and various outings throughout the year. For further information please contact Janice Primrose on 01892 750329. We look forward to seeing you.

Nutley Women’s Institute

Nutley WI's 92nd Birthday Lunch was celebrated at Barnsgate Manor on a beautiful sunny day. Both the meal and service were excellent and enjoyed by all.

Since this was also our Literary Lunch, several mem-bers read a very varied selection of poems and prose. These ranged from the poem by Minnie Haskins made famous by George VI in his 1939 Christmas broadcast, to Bill Bryson's lyrical description of Eng-land, with several poems both old and new, and even a couple of poetic advertisements thrown in.

Our next meeting is on Thursday 7th April in the Me-morial Hall, when our speaker, Jane Ramsey, will reveal what goes on behind the scenes at the famous auction houses. Visitors will be most welcome.

Nutley Windmill

We have now reached May when we have four Open Days. The first are on 15th and 16th May. This is the Na-tional Mills Weekend, organised by the Mill Section of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings when many mills which do not nor-mally open, are open. Then we open for Spring Bank holiday on 29th and 30th May. All these days are at our usual times, 10.00 – 5.00pm.

Just to refresh you, we are not al-lowed to have visitors cars use the track to the mill, but disabled drivers

can drive right up to the mill. Parking is allowed in Friends Car Park, a short distance along Crowborough Road, then walk down from the rear to the mill, a trip of about ten minutes. On Open Days we put out direction boards in the car park and both ends of Crowborough Road.

The following month in June we are changing our Vintage Day to two days. We are keeping 26th June as our Vintage Day, but giving the whole field over to the Sussex and Kent Stationary Engine Group so that they can bring additional engines. Then on 31st July the Sussex MG Car Club are bringing more of their Classic cars up, for a teddy bears’ picnic. As usual we open on our working Wednesdays 11.00 – 3.00pm for more information 01435 873367 or www.udps.co.uk or E-mail [email protected]

Heathfield Choral Society Come and join Heathfield Choral Society at Broad Oak Village Hall on Saturday 23rd April 2016 between 10.30am and 4.30pm to sing Howard Goodall’s ‘Every Purpose under the Heaven’ conducted by Brian Newman, this is Goodall’s latest work, based upon ten of the most familiar passages from the King James Bible. First performed in November 2011 at Westminster Abbey, the work was commissioned to mark the 400th anniversary of this translation.

HCS is one of the few choirs in the country to perform this work, which will be staged at the State Hall in Heathfield on Saturday 21st May at 7.30pm when Karl Jenkins’ ‘The Armed Man’ will also be part of the repertoire. Full of memorable tunes and exciting rhythms this is a great opportunity to learn this work in the company of a large choir. All voices welcome.

The cost of the day will be £15 to include the hire of music and light re-freshments. To register for this event, please e-mail: [email protected] or telephone 01323 833921'

Uckfield Music Club

Once again, in the lovely venue of St Margaret’s Church, Buxted,, the Uck-field Music Club are staging three con-certs that promise a superb season. The concerts are held on May 19th, June 16th and July 21st, all on Thursdays at 7.30pm. The Primavera Chamber En-semble are one of the country's premier chamber ensembles with strong roots in this region and they return in May to play piano trios by Mozart and Schu-mann, Arvo Part's adagio and Brahms' trio for horn, piano and violin. We greatly look forward to their perform-ance.

For the June concert, we are fortunate to have Riyad Nicolas, a young and gifted Syrian-born pianist and a Selected Artist of the Countess of Munster Musical Trust. He will play works from Bach, Beethoven, Liszt, Paganini, Scarlatti, Chopin and Scriabin. Ryad won first prize at the Francaix Inter-national Piano competition, has performed at the Wigmore Hall and other major venues in Britain and over the world. Notably, he raised £150,000 for the International Rescue Committee for Syria when he played Beetho-ven's 5th piano concerto with the English Chamber Orchestra.

Finally in July - in association with the Uckfield Festival - The Frith Piano Quartet with John Tattersdill, double bass will perform works by Hummel. Schumann and Schubert's famous ' Trout' quintet. The Quintet was formed in 2000 from top artists and is a Selected Ensemble of Making Music's Concert Promoter's Group, performing both well-known and lesser-known but beautiful works. Come and share the music of these gifted artists with us.

A membership subscription is £24 for all three concerts. Tickets on the door just £12 per concert. Further information from 01825 733254 or email [email protected]

Nutley Historical Society Website:

www.nutleyhistorical.org.uk

At our meeting on 25th February our guest speaker, Kevin Gordon, told us all about “The Lost Village of Tidemills”. Many of us had probably never heard of Tidemills, a settlement between Seaford and Newhaven. With some wonderful archive pictures this was a most interesting talk.

At our next meeting on 28th April in the Church Hall at 7.45pm we shall welcome Mr Geoffrey Mead who will tell us about “Sussex Industrial His-tory”. As always guests and/or new members will be most welcome.

The society has been researching the interesting life of the Rev Harry Peckham who was for many years Vicar of Nutley. We are now in a posi-tion to stage a small exhibition of the material that has been gathered. This will be staged from the weekend of 7/8th May in Nutley Church. It will stay in place for sufficient time to allow as many visitors as possible. So, please come.
