  • VIBROCORDFFT data collector and machine analyzer

    VIBCODEcompatible

    FeaturingLevel 1 Level 2

    Strategy

  • "Just give me somethingthat works!"

When asked to name the greatestpitfall to machine condition moni-toring, one expert replied, "Insteadof making life easier, many moderninstruments seem to have 'lostsight of the forest for all the trees':complex technological 'advances'mean more specialist training, more time and effort for measure-ment - yet often enough deliverresults that are either difficult tointerpret or do not characterize theactual machine condition."What the maintenance specialistreally needs is simply an industrialtool that works. It must give clear, repeatable measurement results, quickly and reliably, without a lotof previous training or experience.VIBROCORD is made to fit the bill:its entire design is truly machine-oriented to provide maximum ben-efit to a wide range of users at thelowest possible cost. It gives the'power user' all the advanced func-tions he needs, but perhaps evenmore important, its operating ele-ments and procedures let nearlyany operator collect reliable mea-surements tailored to the particularmachine class and application -with no uncertainty or confusion.

  • The 'low-maintenance'monitoring strategy

    Why 'characteristic overall values'?

In order to deliver reliable results,Level 1 trending values must bebased upon the special characteris-tics of the machine, for example, vibration severity for low-speedmachines which require monitor-ing all the way down to 2 Hz in-stead of the usual 10 Hz.

VIBROCORD trends specific over-all values that include all damagefrequencies characteristic of a par-ticular machine element, not justthe standard RMS vibration level -so that when Level 2 is signaled, you know that a significant condi-tion change has occurred.

Level 1 Level 2Trend mode Analysis mode

When the trend rises above tolerance, anFFT spectrum is measured for diagnosis.

The reference spectrum taken in 'good'condition allows meaningful comparison.

    Level 1

    Level 2

    Detection vs. diagnosis:Level 1 / Level 2 strategy

Most rotating machines don't needfrequent vibration frequency analy-sis for condition monitoring sowhy bother wasting specialistsprecious time and effort on unnec-essary measurement and data han-dling? VIBROCORD lets anyoneconfirm machine health duringnormal operation (Level 1) basedupon specific machine-orientedcharacteristic overall values. Whenconditions worsen, the characteris-tic signal level rises: VIBROCORD

automatically switches to its RouteExpert mode and records the FFTspectrum (Level 2) to pinpoint thecause of signal elevation. This two-level strategy makes more efficientuse of manpower and data archi-val, yet ensures full information onmachine operating condition.

  • 'Ref': reference level for 'good' operating condition'Last': most recent measurement level'Warn'/'Alarm': warning and alarm levels from threshold file, e.g. ISO standards'Spec': stored value for comparison with current measurement'Diff': difference between stored value and current measurement

: measured value exceeds warning threshold: measured value exceeds alarm threshold

Now for the first time ever, VIBRO-CORD offers a time-saving menuof predefined measurement situa-tions based upon expert knowl-edge of specific machine types.Beginners can use these setups as-is to obtain immediate results;standardized settings allow reliable

    Knowledge-based setups:quick results, accurate comparison

VIBROCORD knowledge-based setups offer a wideselection of standard measure-ment situations. Each mea-surement mode - overall value, spectrum and time waveform -has its own separate setup list.

Overall values tell thewhole story at a glance

The 'overall value' screen (hereshown for ISO vibration severitystandards, machine class I) gives aclear overview of the situation. Asingle glance shows how the cur-

comparison with previous mea-surements for diagnosis. And eventhe expert can reduce setup timeby optimizing any desired detailsbefore beginning collection - or hecan define his own complete set ofmeasurement parameters instead.

rent reading stacks up againstwarning and alarm limits, the lastreading taken, and reference val-ues for 'good' operating condition.

The 'event' softkey lets youselect a standard MIMOSA-compliant machine event andenter a comment to store withthe measurement.

  • High Medium LowResolution Resolution Resolution

In the low-frequencyrange, high resolution isneeded to clearly distin-guish spectrum peaks -for example, to distin-guish between mechan-ical problems (e.g. un-balance at 49.97 Hz fora machine at 3000RPM) and electrical ones(seen at 50 Hz mainsfrequency).

In the medium-frequencyrange, the spectrum isrecorded with mediummeasurement resolution,e.g. to analyze gearmesh.

In the high-frequencyrange, relatively lowresolution generallysuffices, e.g. in order tomonitor the bearingsignal range.

f/HzDf = up to 0.03 Hz Df = up to 0.31 Hz Df = up to 3.1 Hz

    MultiSpectrum:proper resolution,fewer spectra

Proper resolution setting can makeor break machine diagnosis! Byusing an appropriate resolution foreach different region of the spec-trum, MultiSpectrum automaticallyensures clear distinction betweenadjacent spectrum peaks in anysituation. MultiSpectrum thereforeprovides optimum resolution withjust one wideband spectrum ateffective resolution of up to 8960lines! The experienced user mayadjust the overall range and num-ber of lines per division as desired.

    Expert assistance

    Good condition Bad condition

Route Expert adapts tocurrent machine condition

How does a vibration expert ap-proch machine condition monitor-ing? When things are runningsmoothly, he's satisfied to collectoverall value trend readings from aminimum of measurement loca-tions. But when an elevated read-ing spells trouble, he knows on thespot exactly where to collect whichtypes of additional readings and

FFT spectrum measurements foraccurate machine diagnosis. TheVIBROCORD Route Expert featureacts in exactly the same way toadapt its route to current machinecondition: it immediately calls forfurther specific measurements asneeded even at additional loca-tions eliminating the need for ex-tra follow-up 'alarm routes'.

Route Expert needs only a few char-acteristic overall values to confirmgood operating condition.

When the characteristic overall value rises, Route Expert automat-ically collects a characteristic spectrum for diagnosis and takesadditional measurements at further appropriate locations.

    VIBCODE

    Eliminates trending errors

Mixed-up measurement locationsand missing readings can meanexpensive remeasurement or, evenworse, fatal trending errors butnow there's a better way: the rug-ged VIBCODE transducer freesyou from fixed routes by automati-cally reading the location of spe-cially-encoded measurement studs.VIBROCORD then knows the ex-act types and setups of measure-ments to collect, including FFTspectra if machine condition read-ings exceed specified alarm limits.A simple twist of the transducerassures accurate trending and reli-able broad-band spectrum mea-surements including shock pulsereadings.

    Freedom of choice

The TIPTECTOR probe is idealfor hand-held measurement of FFTvibration spectra all the way upto 2 kHz and high-frequencyshock pulses for reliable evaluationof anti-friction bearing conditionand pump cavitation.
