New Initiative for Career Development Center

Cards Career Navigator took off with a bang this year, as the Career Development Center introduced the new initiative for Freshman Orientation 2012. Developed as an assessment and resource tool for incoming freshman, Cards Career Navigator assist students in discovering and applying their skills, values, and interests

toward their individualized career development goals. Through these assessments, students will acquire the tools needed to accurately

select their major, identify related occupations within the major, and gather profession specific resources. All incoming freshman were required to take the assessment before attending Orientation and later attended a presentation regarding the services they would receive in the coming year. This is terrific joint venture with Academic Advising. It is anticipated that Cards Career Navigator will change the way that student’s design and navigate in their career development while at the University of Louisville.

Student Outreach Uniting Louisville Outstripped Past Years’ Attendance

On Saturday August 18, 2012, as part of Welcome Week, the Office of Civic Engagement,

Leadership and Service along with First Year Initiatives held the annual SOUL (Student Outreach Uniting Louisville) Service event. Twenty-three community agencies as well as the UL Dance Marathon group put 500 of our students to work on

important projects around our city and the campus. 100 upper-class students volunteered to work with the program to help it run smoothly, and 30 University staff and faculty led volunteer teams and helped get everyone checked in. During the service, students were painting classrooms, mulching trees, making cards for kids, building wagons, sorting donations and much much more. Due to the unexpected attendance this year, there were over 200 students who wanted to participate, but all the available service spots had filled up. They were each encouraged to get involved in the many other events coming up over the semester.

Student Recreation Center Update

Construction on the new Student Recreation Center is progressing very quickly, and it is on schedule for next October’s grand opening! Actual construction is in week 16 of digging, pouring, drilling and grinding. The building will be the first one on our campus to be heated and cooled by geothermal energy. Those cores have been drilled, which is a landmark moment in our campus history. A rooftop view of the construction is being taken every Friday. You can view those pictures, and gain a sense of the scale and tremendous footprint of the building, by visiting the http://louisville.edu/reccenter web site. Look for the photos link on the left side of the page. There are some photos showing artist’s renderings of the new center as well as photos that give a week to week history of the construction progress.

Keeping up with the news in Student Affairs has been a challenge in the past. Now there is a blog where news and events are posted regularly. If you want to stay informed, all you

need to do is go to the blog at http://www.stuaff.org/blog/. If you would

like to get an email update when something new is posted on the blog, subscribe to it and as new posts are made you will

Summer Picnic Fun

The annual Student Affairs Professional Development Committee Summer picnic took place on August 3 in the Red Barn. The event always serves as a great way to welcome our newly hired staff and graduate

assistants, and reconnect as a division before the fall semester

whirlwind hits. We had delicious dishes to enjoy provided by each department and a rousing game of bingo with many enthusiastic winners. Best of all the winners of the summer Healthy Lifestyle Challenge (thought up by Jeremy Johnson and run by Debby Woodall and her

intern, Michael Gooch) were announced. Karen Zody won for highest percentage of weight lost and Ashley Hazen earned the most points for adding fitness and nutritional choices to her lifestyle.

Congratulations to our winners and all the participants who enjoyed some

great camaraderie this summer!

Intramurals Pilots New On-line Sign-up

Intramural Sports has 37 leagues, tournaments and special events lined up for UofL

students, faculty and staff during this academic year. Those 37 programs represent 20 different sports. This is significant because nationally, the trend is to offer fewer structured programs through recreational sports programs. UofL students continue to want to play in organized leagues and tournaments even though it is sometimes difficult for them to commit to a 4 or 5-week program. The structured intramural program is still riding a nice wave of record participation that has been building for the past 6 years. The program, called IM Leagues, is also launching a new web-based service that will allow teams to sign up for activities online. It will

allow users to customize their own “player profiles” and keep track of their own team’s records and statistics. The online program is being rolled out to the Greek teams

for the fall semester in a test scenario and then will be made available

to all participants at a later date.

There’s a Good Reason to Submit News and Events for Publicity in the Weekly Email

Why submit news and/or events to the Student News and Events weekly email? There is a good bit of readership, more than you might think. At the end of the spring

semester, we took a survey of students about the email that goes out on the weekend. Here’s a few things it revealed: 97% of those surveyed read or at least skimmed through the Student News and Events email each week. 85% read it on their computer. 90% learned something new about a university event, an involvement opportunity, or campus policy or procedure from reading the weekly email. 63% went to an event because it was listed in the email. 25% use the Google Calendar buttons to add events to their calendar. (A good reason to post your events on the Student Events Calendar.) 84% normally find out about campus news and events through the email, 40% word of mouth, 38% Facebook, and 17% Twitter (each is not exclusive to the other). The results favor the time and effort it takes to post news and events via the submission form. The form allows you to submit to the Email, Calendar, Online News feed and Digital TVs. RSO and Involvement Fairs Draw Record Number of Students

It’s a fact: UofL students are excited about getting involved on campus and being a part of big things. At the 2012 RSO Fair and the 2012 Involvement Fair hosted on August 21st and 22nd, hundreds of new and returning students descended upon the West Plaza to visit tables hosted by 136 student groups and departments. Student groups were out in force to recruit new members

and grow our vibrant UofL Campus Community, while departments from all over campus showcased their engaging programs. Many groups reported that they talked

to more than 100 interested students at their table alone. All kinds of students were drawn-in by the pumping music from the Student Activities tent and

990 students took advantage of the awesome free food provided for students by the Student Activities Board and the Dean of Students office. It’s clear that our students are eager to make a difference and be part of a diverse and vibrant community.

Summer Time is Camp Time!

Summer means camp time to the Intramural and Recreational Sports Department. The department hosted eleven groups this summer, which brought over 3,000 non-UofL students to campus. Camps hosted included basketball team and elite player camps, volleyball team and elite player camps, cheer-leading, dance team camp, mascot camp and more. Most of these camps were overnight camps lasting 3 days to an entire week, which means those campers stayed on our campus and experienced first hand what it’s like to be a Cardinal! Camps ranged in age from 12 years to college students, so they brought a wide variety of people to campus. The camps are a great way to promote the Intramurals department, the Division of Student Affairs and the University of Louisville to thousands of people. In addition to the campers, many camps also brought parents and family members, so the experience was shared with many others. It has been a busy summer!

2013 Panhellenic Sorority Breaks Records!

The Panhellenic Council hosted their largest Bid Day in UofL history on August 15th.

Two hundred and forty women were matched

to sororities. All seven participating sororities pledged to quota ( 32 or higher) and all PH sororities are above the current chapter total of 94. Plans are underway to vote to increase the total this semester. IFC Hosts New Events to Promote Fraternity Membership

The Interfraternity Council hosted several

new events this semester to increase awareness of the 14 member fraternities. The Greek Row Block Party was held at the end of the first week

of classes. Students enjoyed pizza, corn hole contests, volleyball games, a Penn Station Philly Cheese Steak Eating Contest, and music broadcast live from a local radio station. The IFC also sponsored “Greek 101” in the SAC West Plaza the Sunday before IFC Recruitment Week began. The extra promotions paid off—three hundred and twenty-three men accepted bids on Bid Night.

SGA Honors Two Student Affairs Staff Members

Two Student Affairs staff members were honored by the Student Government Association during their annual spring banquet. Suzanne Galbreath was presented with the President’s Award, designed to honor a UofL administrator who develops a close relationship with the SGA president by helping to solve or lobby for one of the president’s chief initiatives. Suzanne was recognized for her budget expertise, years of service, and friendship during the beginning transitional days of the new administration. Dean Michael Mardis received the Award for Excellence for his years of service to the organization. The award is given to a person who “develops a relationship with many SGA members, seems to always be available to help, and truly believes that SGA is not only the voice of students, but a vital entity to our campus.” As the inaugural recipient, SGA honored Dr. Mardis by naming the award the “Michael Mardis Award for Excellence.”

Political Science from University of North Carolina at Greensboro where he worked in Housing and Residence Life as a Head Resident. He is in his second semester of the Masters in Higher Education Administration. Tajuan’s office is located in the Student Activities suite W310. Counseling Center

Gabrielle Billings is a new counselor at the UofL Counseling Center. Gabrielle has previously

worked as a therapist at both LifeSpring in Indiana and Seven Counties Services in Louisville. In both positions, she worked with people of all ages and backgrounds who were struggling with issues such as depression, anxiety, stress, substance abuse, trauma and grief. Prior to becoming a therapist, Gabrielle worked

as an English teacher with the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program in Fukushima, Japan. Gabrielle earned a Master’s of Science degree in Social Work from the University of Texas at Austin where she graduated with distinction. She is excited about working with students at UofL.

Crystal Farmer is the new graduate assistant

Outreach Coordinator for the Student Counseling Center. She will coordinate & conduct outreach events on campus and assist in outreach programming & Counseling Center projects. She is pursuing a M.Ed. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at the University of Louisville and has six years of professional experience in direct social services and non-profit program development. She is passionate about mental health education and excited to be a part of the Counseling Center team!

Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering from North Carolina State University, and his Master’s degree in College Student Development from Appalachian State University. During his time at NC State, he became a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., served as the President of the NPHC, and worked closely with the Office of Greek Life. At Appalachian State, Jeffrey served as the Graduate Assistant for the Multicultural Center and co-advised the NPHC. Civic Engagement, Leadership and Service

Heidi Elmer is a new Departmental Assistant for the Engage Lead Serve Office. Heidi spent the last year at Holyoke Community College

in Massachusetts as Online Orientation Project Manager and Professional Learning Coach. Heidi is a graduate of Mt. Holyoke College with a BA in Psychology. She will work with several of our newer programs including Elect Her and our recognition programs, including the Student Awards. Heidi is

starting her master’s degree in College Student Personnel. Heidi’s office is located in the Student Activities suite W310.

Tajuan Sellars will coordinate a number of programs, including MLK Day of Service, as the new Departmental Assistant for the Engage Lead Serve Office. He will also manage the social media marketing for the department, helping to get the word out to as many students as possible about how to get involved. Tajuan earned his undergraduate degree in

Welcome New Staff Members

Student Activities Jeffrey Cross is the new Program Coordinator for National Pan-Hellenic Council and Student Involvement. He serves as the advisor to the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), which consists of nine historically Black Greek letter fraternities and sororities. He also supports other Student Activities programs and initiatives. A native of North Carolina, Jeffrey received his

Housing and Residence Life Ashleigh Taylor is from Memphis, TN. She is an alumni of Tennessee State University (Bachelor’s of Science in Communication) and is a Graduate Student in the College Student Personnel Program here at UofL. She is the new Building Director of Miller Hall.

Ryan Pinette is the new Graduate Resident Director in Threlkeld Hall, pursuing

his masters degree in Higher Education Administration. His hometown is Reading, Massachusetts, which is a small suburb north of Boston. He received a Bachelors Degree in Communication Studies from Merrimack College, located in North Andover, Massachusetts. He has previously worked in the Housing Department at Berklee

College of Music in Boston. James Weakley grew up in Bowling Green, KY and graduated from Western Kentucky University with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Communication Disorders. James worked for WKU Housing and Residence Life for three years as a Resident Assistant during his undergraduate career. James is pursuing a Masters Degree in Speech Pathology here at UofL. As a Graduate Assistant Hall Director, James is managing the Medical-Dental Apartments where he lives with his wife Katie. Janessa Siegel is a new staff member with the Housing and Residence Life Department. She is from Louisville, KY and graduated from UofL May 12, 2012 with a BSBA in Marketing. She was a Cardinal Ambassador for two years; and

a Marketing intern for ADP the summer of 2011. Janessa is the Assessment Coordinator for housing and is a member of the First Year Exemption Committee. Chris Potts is the new Assistant Director for Residence Education for Housing and Residence Life. He is responsible for the oversight of student leadership development, programming, student

conduct, and the supervision of the Residence Education staff. He is from the “beautiful Pacific Northwest in Seattle, WA.” He holds a Bachelor’s of Art in Criminal Justice from Washington State University and a Master’s of Science in Conflict Resolution with an emphasis in Student Affairs in Higher Education from Portland State University.

Recently, he spent the past two years at Tulane University in the Housing and Residence Life department.

High Fives Debby Woodall, Assistant Director, Intramurals —“She has gone above and beyond in creating a fitness challenge this summer just because some staff expressed an interest. We have had interesting articles to read each week and fun activities to do. Best of all we got to do them with other Student Affairs staff while getting to know Debby better. She also has a terrific student intern, Michael, working with her. Debby really cares about fitness and is a great teacher.”

AJ Jones, Graduate Assistant—“AJ stepped up FAR above and beyond the standard volunteer role. AJ was a track buddy and a shuttle driver and gave up an entire week for the Gehring Academy. The faculty absolutely adored AJ and established some really great relationships. AJ absolutely deserves this high five for being a tremendous asset for the Academy.”

Michelle Massey, Associate Director of Housing and Residence Life—“Michelle has worked diligently to help bridge the campus to the new affiliated apartment communities on the edge of campus. She has spent hours working directly with managerial staff members of the communities educating them on student development, the mission of Student Affairs and Housing and Residence Life. When the fire occurred in one of our communities this past spring, she worked directly with the management and the residents of the community to try to help the students who were affected by the fire. She followed up with the students regularly to ensure they were okay and talked with many of the families to answer their questions as well. She is tireless in her efforts to help the residents of these off campus communities feel connected to the

university.”
