    THEORY OF MACHINES

Description - OverviewThe TM16 series is a range of products that teach differentaspects of vibrations and oscillations in mechanicalsystems. These include pendulums, mass-springs systemsand shafts and beams. The TM16 series is a modularsystem, based around a Frame and Cupboard (TM16a).

TecQuipment supply the products as packages that matcha range of experiments. Refer to the selection matrix tochoose the correct product packages to match theexperiment you need.

You need the Frame and Cupboard (TM16a) for allexperiments, then you choose the other products youneed. Alternatively, you may select the complete package(TM16), which includes everything you need (except thestroboscope) to do all the experiments.

    THEORY OF MACHINES

    Description - Products

Frame and Cupboard (TM16a)A heavy and sturdy steel frame with small wheels and auseful cupboard to store your optional products. The topof the cupboard is a useful work area. The bottom of theframe has adjustable feet to help you level and steady theframe.

The upper part of the frame is the window, where you fitmost of the other (optional) experiments. Someexperiments fit to the side of the frame.

Includes a stopwatch and a rule.

Pendulum Experiments (TM16b)Fits in the window of the frame. Studies differentpendulums, their characteristics and behaviour. Includes:

    Simple wooden and steel pendulums.

A Bob pendulum and a Kater pendulum

    A wooden compound pendulum

    A bifilar suspension bar

Mass-Spring System (TM16c)Fits in the window of the frame. Studies different springswith different loads to find periodic time and deflectionand spring stiffness. Includes masses and three differentsprings.

Free and Forced Vibrations (TM16d)Fits in the window of the frame. Studies free and forcedvibrations in a beam and spring system. Includes:

A long steel beam and supports

    Different springs and masses

A damping dashpot and a drum recorder

Lateral Vibrations (TM16e)Fits in the window of the frame. Studies lateral (transverse)vibrations in a beam. Includes:

A long steel beam and supports

    A spring and masses

    A damping dashpot

Motor and Speed Control (TM16f)The motor fits onto other ancillaries to give controlled, forced vibrations at a known frequency. The Speed Controlsits on the top of the cupboard. The Speed Control adjuststhe speed of the motor and gives power for the drumrecorder of the TM16d. It also gives an output to helptrigger the optional stroboscope.

Vibration Absorber (TM16g)Fits under the motor of the Motor and Speed Control, andonto the beam of the Lateral Vibrations ancillary (TM16e)to study how to tune two bodies to absorb vibrations. Itis two masses fitted at equal distances on a leaf springassembly.

Torsional Oscillations (TM16h/i)Fits in the window of the frame. Studies oscillations (simpleharmonic angular motion) in a twisting shaft. Includes:

    Three different shafts

Two different flywheels and inertia weights

    Shaft clamps

Damped Torsional Oscillations (TM16k)Fits on the side of the frame. Studies how oil can dampenthe angular oscillations of a twisting shaft (viscousdamping). Includes:

    A pen recorder and dashpot

    Three different shafts

An oil reservoir assembly and oil

Clamps to hold the parts to the frame

    A typicalpendulumexperiment

    A typicaldampedtorsionaloscillationsexperiment
