As we enter our 43rd year of serving the Mobile community, the Board of Directors and staff of the Via Center are eager to share the many ways we have been able to serve the older adults of our community. New Leadership...We have had some staffing changes at the Via Center. In March of this year, Dorothy M. Curry assumed the role of Executive Director of the Via Center. Curry formerly served as Center Director beginning in August of 2010. She has a Bachelors of Science Degree in Psychology from Springhill College and a Masters of Science in Therapeutic Recreation and a Certificate in Gerontology from the University of South Alabama. Resource Development...With the downturn in the economy, funding has been a top priority. Via held its signature special events such as Cool White Linen Night, BayBears Bowl for Via and Corks in the Courtyard. We also continued offering our long-standing programs we conduct with our community partners including the City of Mobile, Mobile County, United Way, the Mobile Housing Board and SARPC (Are Agency on the Aging). Focusing on Health... As part of the Center for Generational Studies (CGS), Via formed a partnership with the USA’s Family Medicine Center to provide much-needed senior healthcare services. The Via Center now houses a community Wellness Clinic. Once a week, a medical doctor with qualifications in Geriatric medicine and medical students from the University of South Alabama provide weight assessment, blood pressure checks, oxygen-level testing, glucose testing, eye and ear testing, and medication counseling. All services are provided free-of-charge. Expanding Services...While primarily serving older adults, Via has recognized that a more inclusive, community-based approach helps maximize limited resources and provide more programs and services. Via has intergenerational programs and activities for youth and adults. New health, fitness and enrichment programs are specialized for up and coming baby boomers. Guaranteeing Our Sustainability for Generations... In November, we launched our Annual Appeal & Capital Campaign, Together Strong. Our goal is to raise $1 million to rejuvenate older areas of the Via Center and enhance our long-standing programs, such as our GrandFriends adult daycare program. 2011-2012 Annual Report to the Community Via Health, Fitness and Enrichment Center Senior Citizens Services Via Health, Fitness and Enrichment Center Arlene F. This past year has been a very busy one for everyone affiliated with the Via Health,

Fitness and Enrichment Center. While we still have the same professional staff who have

served members for years, we have been fortunate to add a new Program

Director and Director of Resource Development. These staff are committed to

implementing the programs and services our older adults need and to doing the

challenging work to raise the funds needed to do it!

I have been affiliated with the Via Center for more than a decade, and it never ceases to amaze me what

a truly incredible place it is. It is a life-blood to thousands of older adults (22,000 each year to be exact) in our

community.

You probably know that we operate the Via Center - a 40,000 square-foot facility with a gymnasium,

state-of-the-art fitness center, auditorium, library, computer lab, billiards room, café, ceramic room, classroom

space and a newly established Educational Arts Center for intergenerational programs. However, you may not

realize we also offer more than 80 health, fitness and enrichment programs. And, our Via Outreach Services

provide home-to-center transportation, an emergency food pantry, affordable meals in our café, a health clinic,

adult daycare program, programs for the five senior public housing communities, information and referral

services and housekeeping assistance for home-bound, low income seniors.

To say “thank you” to our board members, volunteers, funders, members and staff never seems

adequate, but please know that I am very grateful for all of your support. I know that as we move forward

together, we can become even stronger.

Best wishes for a happy 2013!

Via receives only a small portion (22%) of its

funding from the City of Mobile. The majority of our

funding comes through competitive grants, performance

contracts, special event income and donations from area

businesses and individuals.

Our cost per member to provide services is $823,

but our average membership fee is $123 per year. We

can continue to work to keep membership/program fees

low with support from our members and the community.
