The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme was founded by the Duke of Edinburgh in 1956 to combat ‘…the decline of compassion, the decline of skills, the decline of physical fitness and the decline of initiative.”
There are four elements to the DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARD SCHEME for Bronze and Silver awards:

For the Gold Award there is the added element of a residential

Level Duration
Minimun hours of planned activity each day
Bronze 2 days and 1 night
At least 6 hours during the daytime(at least 3 of which must be spent journeying)
Silver 3 days and 2 nights
At least 7 hours during the daytime(at least 3.5 of which must be spent journeying)
Gold 4 days and 3 nights
At least 8 hours during the daytime(at least 4 of which must be spent journeying)

Key findings:•90% of young people said doing their DofE has given them opportunities to help others.•82% noted their DofE has made them want to continue with volunteering/voluntary activities.•74% of young people said they developed self-esteem.•62% feel that doing their DofE has helped them make a positive difference to their local community.•64% feel that as a result of DofE they are better at sport or physical activity.•74% of young people said it allowed them to try activities they would never have tried before.•71% of young people identified improved self-belief
