BAM GRAM It is an exciting time in the Royal

Maces! We have successfully completed

summer patrol and are just wrapping up

the first week of a well-earned summer

“break”. I know everyone is looking

forward to a bit of down time to reconnect

with loved ones and recharge their

batteries. The squadron is performing

beyond expectations on every level and I

have been amazed at the

professionalism, camaraderie and

dedication of every Mace sailor. It is truly

an honor serving with such great

American heroes.

Although we have just reached the

halfway point, there is still much more

work to be done. We will continue to train

and prepare for the upcoming fall patrol

as well as the challenges every

deployment presents. Mission success is

truly a team effort and it is critical that the

entire Mace family continue to work

together to make this patrol the safest and

most successful yet. I want to personally

thank all the families, friends and

supporters of the Royal Maces for all you

do; we could not fulfill our mission without

your love and support.

XO’s Alley

X Dear Mace Family, I'm honored and

grateful to have joined VFA-27 in early July

as Executive Officer, and look forward to

serving with the outstanding Royal Mace

team as part of our country's Forward-

Deployed Naval Forces. It's a true

privilege to serve with so many outstanding

Sailors, and to share the experience of

living and working together in the

fascinating country of Japan.

Having just returned from my first

underway period aboard USS George

Washington with the Royal Maces, I'm

deeply impressed with the determination,

teamwork, and professionalism

demonstrated by Mace Sailors every day

as they maintain, arm, and launch our

squadron's FA-18E Super Hornets to

protect U.S. interests and those of our

allies. Yet it's Royal Mace families and

friends here in Japan, in the United States,

and around the world that make it all

possible, supporting our Sailors as they

carry out their demanding responsibilities

on shore and at sea. I'd like to thank our

extended Mace family for all that you do to

help our squadron succeed; we couldn't do

it without you. Domo arigato gozaimasu!

ones, families and friends. I understand this time off is not a

vacation type deal, for we still have to keep our jets up and be

ready for the fall cruise. However I highly encourage you all to

take a few hours or a day off to make it count and spend quality

time with your families and friends. For you single Sailors, in-port

means a larger bed in the barracks room and faster internet

connectivity, or a better signal on your cell phones. Call home,

reach out or at least let your families and friends know that you’re

back.

I'd like to extend my regards to our two hard working

Ombudsmen; Becky and Amy. Thank you for all your support

and creativeness in reaching out to our newly reported families

and for assisting families of Maces as always “above and

beyond”.

And to the men and women of Royal Maces, keep up the good

work. Have a safe and incident free in-port period in Atsugi.

CMC’s Corner Royal Maces!!! Welcome to the first edition

of the ‘Bam Gram” and welcome to the

CMC’s corner.

First of all I would like to take this opportunity

to welcome our Commanding Officer CDR

Jimmy Briller and our Executive Officer CDR

Spencer Abbot, it is an honor and privilege to

have this opportunity to serve with the Royal

Maces under your command. On behalf of

the Royal Maces Goat Locker…”Welcome

Aboard”!

Maces, what an exciting summer

deployment. Truly appreciate the hard work

and dedication each of you young gals and

guys put in day in and day out. The long

hours you put in trouble shooting the jets,

replacing defective components, launching

and recovering jets or simply supporting the

USS George Washington on her routine RAS

(replenishment at Sea), Alpha or Bravo

working parties are remarkable. You all

have shown the professionalism and pride

throughout this deployment.

Equally impressive is your conduct and

demeanor through our two port visits in

Busan and Hong Kong. I saw the excitement

and anticipation from our new Sailors and

first time deployers’ to these foreign ports.

Everyone I spoke to had a great liberty plan

and had a good time. We were able to

unwind, taste authentic cuisines, and visit

tourist attractions, or participate in community

service projects. As a Command we were

able to enjoy the hospitality of the host

country with only a few minor liberty

incidents. BZ! To all who adhered to their

liberty plans, great job showing the Maces

professionalism in and out of uniform! I

would also like to extend my appreciation

to all Sailors who wore their SDW

uniform to represent the Royal Maces in

the traditional first night reception

onboard the ship. And those who

attended the American Club Reception in

Hong Kong job well done!

Before we look ahead to the next leg of

our deployment, we will be home for a

few weeks at NAF Atsugi. An in-port

period that almost all Maces are eagerly

waiting, our time to spend with our love

During Night Carrier

Qualifications near the start of

the USS George Washington’s

2012 patrol, AME2 Daniel Hall,

of the VFA-27 Royal Maces,

was summoned to the flight

deck for his specific skills

involving ejection seats. Upon

his arrival on the flight deck,

AME2 Hall was directed to

aircraft 211 where he found the

ejection handle partially

activated and hanging

dangerously from its housing.

The seat was unable to be

secured into the “safe” position.

Quickly and calmly, AME2 Hall

determined the cause of the

problem and repaired it - all

while working over a live,

malfunctioning ejection seat with

the pilot strapped in tightly,

anticipating imminent ejection.

“Hall showed courage and

mettle. He literally risked his

own neck re-seating that

handle”, said the pilot.

For his quick action in the face

of danger, and for averting a

potential mishap and severe

injury to both the aircrew and

himself had the seat

inadvertently activated, AME2

Hall was awarded a Navy

Achievement Medal by the

Commanding Officer of VFA-27.

AEAN Justin Carte, a veteran

Plane Captain of the VFA-27

Royal Maces, was completing a

routine daily inspection procedure

to ready aircraft 205 for flight

when he noticed a piece of RAM

was missing from above the

centerline drop-tank. He quickly

notified Maintenance Control and

initiated an intense FOD search

that resulted in discovery of major

damage to the aircraft’s high

pressure compressors. His quick

action and attention to detail

prevented a potential mishap from

occurring had aircrew taken

aircraft 205 airborne in its

hazardous condition.
