There are many different ways to build students’ knowledge, skills and career. A practical way to prepare for work is to consider completing a Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualification while at school.

What is VET in Schools (VETiS)?Vocational Education and Training (VET) in schools plays a significant role in providing students with alternative subjects to study in their senior years. VET qualifications see students gain units of competency which that prepares them for entry level positions in the workforce across a range of disciplines. VET pathways are also beneficial in preparing students for apprenticeships in their chosen field. Some subjects and units may be undertaken to determine a student’s interest in a particular pathway and career.

All qualifications offered in the VETiS pathway are nationally recognised qualifications. Training may also be required in a workplace setting or within

the community. Students are provided with practical experience that can help them kick start their careers, or provide pathways

to further study.

Outcomes for StudentsStudents enrolled in a VETiS qualification may use successful completion of that qualification to assist with achieving their WA Certificate of Education (WACE) and gain a nationally recognised qualification and/or units of competency.

These can lead students to further study in Vocational Education and Training once they complete high school; apprenticeships or traineeships for certain areas; or can contribute toward university entry.

How Parents/Caregivers can Help

Vocational Education and Training offers industry experience and skills that can be transferred into the workplace or articulated into further study. Parents and caregivers can help their child’s decision making by following these steps:

Step 1: Discuss with their child’s career aspirations for when they leave school, and help them to determine the subjects that will best help them achieve these aspirations.

Step 2: Speak with the VET Coordinator at the school, to identify the VET options available in their region and the requirements involved to help their child make an informed decision.

Should parents have any questions regarding the VET pathway, they should contact their child’s school VET Coordinator, or call Pilbara Institute to discuss the qualifications offered by Pilbara Institute.

How to enrol in a VET in Schools qualification?

1. Students MUST be enrolled and attending high school in 2015 to enrol in a VET in Schools qualification described in this brochure.

2. Make an appointment to speak to your school’s VET Coordinator about what VET in Schools qualifications are available to senior students at your school.

3. Discuss career goals with parents/caregivers and teachers, then fill out your school’s VETiS 2015 (Senior School) application form.

4. Apply to your school Now!

Please remember that enrolment can be competitive as there are limited places available in each qualification. Unfortunately, not every qualification may be available where you live and available courses may change. Some qualifications are available online. Your school’s VET Coordinator will also tell you if you need to do certain WACE Math and English courses at school for some qualifications.
