After Surgery Care Procedure Summary | During your pet’s major surgery, he or she was placed under general anesthesia making them completely asleep and unable to feel or move. In female dogs and cats, the uterus and ovaries are removed through an incision in the abdominal wall. Females are unable to get pregnant. In both male dogs and cats, the scrotum is not removed, only the testicles. Removal of the testicles prevents production of sperm and the male dog or cat will no longer be able to father puppies or kittens.

Feeding | Your pet can have a small snack the night of surgery. Their appetite should return gradually within 24 hours of surgery. Lethargy lasting for more than 24 hours after surgery, diarrhea, or vomiting are not normal and you should contact us immediately. Do not change your pet’s diet at this time and do not give junk food, table scraps, milk or any other people food for a period of one week. This could mask post-surgical complications.

Activity | Evening of surgery: If there are young children or other pets in the home, please separate them from the patient tonight so your pet can recover quietly from surgery. Some animals are active after surgery, while others are quiet. It is very important that they rest, so you must limit your pet’s activity for the next 10-14 days. No running, jumping, playing, swimming, or other strenuous activity during the 10-14 day recovery period. Pets must be kept indoors where they can stay clean, dry, and warm. Dogs must be walked on a leash and cats must be kept inside.

Incision/Sutures | Unless you are told otherwise, your pet does not have external sutures. All sutures are absorbable on the inside and the very outer layer of skin is held together with surgical glue. A small tattoo, a simple line next to the incision or on your pet’s underside, was placed at the time of sterilization. The incision should not get wet for 10-14 days. Do not bathe your pet during the recovery period. Do not clean or apply topical ointment to the incision site. Do not allow your pet to lick the incision, as this may cause an infection. We recommend that pets wear an e-collar (plastic cone) during the recovery period – you can purchase one at the Spay/Neuter Clinic at any time.

Potential Complications | Spaying and neutering are very safe surgeries; however, complications can occur. Minimal redness and swelling should resolve within several days. If it persists longer, please contact us. Our clinic will treat any post-op complications resulting directly from the surgery, if the above post-operative instructions are followed in full. Your regular veterinarian must address illnesses or injuries that are not a direct result of surgery. Please call us for an appointment as soon as you see cause for concern. We cannot be held responsible for complications resulting from failure to follow post-op instructions, or for contagious disease for which the animal was not previously properly vaccinated.

If you have any questions or concerns directly related to the surgery during the recovery period, please call us at (414) 323-6163. When necessary, we can schedule post-surgery follow-up appointments at the Spay/Neuter Clinic; however, if there is an emergency after hours, call your regular veterinarian or an animal emergency hospital.

Elizabethan Collar Instructions We recommend all pets use an Elizabethan collar (E-collar) after surgery to prevent licking and chewing at the incision.

• Please have your pet wear the E-collar for 10-14 days following surgery.

• It may take a few days for your pet to adjust to wearing the E-collar. We recommend it is worn at all times, but is especially important for times when your pet is unsupervised.

• You may need to slightly elevate the food and water bowls while your pet is wearing an E-collar. If your pet refuses to eat or drink while wearing the E-collar, you can remove it for eating and drinking while supervised, and then replace it immediately after your pet is done eating.

• We make every effort to choose an appropriate sized E-collar, but if your pet is able to lick or chew at the incision even when wearing the E-collar, please notify WHS as soon as possible so we can get a new E-collar fitted.
