VETERINARY PRACTICE BIOSECURITY
As a veterinary practice, you will be well aware of the diseasechallenges caused by bringing together a number of sick animals.Disease can be passed directly from animal to animal, animal tohuman or through indirect carriers such as contaminated surfaces,bedding, feeding bowls or drinkers. Biosecurity, in other wordsexcluding disease causing organisms from a given environment,is the most effective form of protection.
Low Risk Areas
Low risk areas such as waiting rooms, floors , corridors and cupboard frontsmust be cleaned and disinfected with a concentrated liqud cleaner disinfectantat least twice daily. Other areas such as desks and walls should be cleaned anddisinfected at least once weekly.
High Risk Areas
High risk areas such as operating and consulting tables, kennels and anyarea where body fluids have been spilt must be thoroughly cleaned and then disinfected using a broad spectrum virucidal disinfectant.

Application
Task Dilution Rate Application
Hard surface disinfection 1:100 Apply disinfectant solution using a floor mop, cloth, sponge or via (10 grams of Virkon Professional a trigger spray bottle. to every 1 litre of water).
Equipment disinfection (Not medical devices) 1:100 Equipment can either be submerged and washed in disinfectant solution (10 grams of Virkon Professional or sprayed and then wiped clean with a cloth or sponge. Rinse disinfected to every 1 litre of water.) equipment with clean water after 10 minutes when materials compatiblity is of concern.
Disinfectant foot dips (Surgery & Farm Visits) 1:100 Place boot in foot dip and scrub using a brush making sure the whole (10 grams of Virkon Professional boot is washed thoroughly paying particular attention to the sole. to every 1 litre of water.) Once soiled, replenish the disinfectant solution.
Vehicle Disinfection 1:200 Apply disinfectant solution to all vehicle surfaces, starting at the top and (5 grams of Virkon Professional working downward, paying particular attention to wheels, wheel arches, to every 1 litre of water.) mudguards and underside of vehicle.
