WelcomeVesalius College is the oldest higher education institution in Brussels that offers Bachelor Programmes solely taught in the English language. We take great pride in the rich educational experience provided by the College and hope that you enjoy learning more about it. Thanks to the influence of our founders, the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Boston University, the College combines the strengths of two successful academic models; we offer students an American-style curriculum with small classes and interactive teaching whilst drawing on the resources of two major European universities, the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and the Université Libre de Bruxelles. This academic excellence has attracted good students from all over the globe – more than 40 different nationalities. Outside the classroom, students have the opportunity to reap the advantages of living in Brussels, the “Capital of Europe,” which is host to the European Union, NATO, and hundreds of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and international businesses. An active internship programme allows students to gain valuable work experience in this stimulating environment. The quality and benefits of the “Vesalius experience” is underscored by the success of our alumni, who have secured admission to top graduate schools in Europe and North America and employment at prestigious companies and organisations around the world. Whether you intend to earn a degree, participate in our study-abroad program, or enroll in a short summer session, at Vesalius College you will find a rewarding opportunity to develop your intellect, intercultural understanding and leadership skills, and to prepare for the professional and personal opportunities that await you. I look forward to personally welcoming you to our campus.

American Style Education in the Capital of Europe

Andreas Vesalius

Vesalius College was founded in 1987 to offer an undergraduate education in English in association with the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Boston University. As an American-style liberal arts college taught in English, the College takes a humanistic approach to intellectual inquiry, encouraging students to not only learn skills and acquire knowledge important to their chosen careers, but also to think critically and develop themselves personally and as citizens of an increasingly multicultural and globalised world.

The College’s teaching methods are characterised by small, interactive classes, flexibility in course selection, and continuous assessment. As a small college with a student body of approximately 300 and a low student-to-professor ratio, the faculty is accessible and able to take a personal interest in the success of students

thus helping them achieve their potential. These close working relationships form the cornerstone of the Vesalius educational philosophy.

Situated in Brussels and home to a thriving international community, the College offers students a truly unique educational experience. Brussels has an important international influence: as the Capital of Europe, the city is home to the European Institutions, NATO and numerous international organisations and multinational companies. Our students benefit from this international setting in many ways. Our Bachelor programmes have a strong European focus; many classes invite experts from the international community as guest lectures; and students have the opportunity to gain academic credit, work experience and valuable contacts by working with one of these

prestigious organisations through our unique internship programme.

Brussels is the bilingual capital of Belgium. This means that both French and Dutch are the official languages of the city. It is a cosmopolitan city where many different cultures live together and where different languages can be heard on each street. This liveliness and international flair is, of course, intimately related to its role as a crossroads for all of Europe.

Students and parents often ask us about the origins of the name of the College. “Vesalius” was selected because the man behind the name was one of the premier freethinkers of the Renaissance, and as such, makes clear the intellectual link between the College and its partner institution, the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. Both the College and the University adhere to the principle of liberal inquiry, unfettered by prejudice deriving from religion, race, gender, or political ideology.

Meet our StudentsWith a diverse student body drawn from all corners of the globe, Vesalius College offers a surprising and enriching cultural experience. With an emphasis placed both on group work and on independent research, there is a natural exchange of experiences, cultures and beliefs between the students. The student body at Vesalius College forms an active and tight academic and social community. And with over 40 nationalities represented at the school, Vesalius College is a unique laboratory for the study of intercultural relations, providing students with the opportunity to work with and learn from each other and forge lasting friendships with people from many different cultures and perspectives.

“The best thing about Vesalius College? You don’t have to travel the world, because the world comes to you at Vesalius College. I made friends for life from all over the world!”

Soraya Amrani, Sweden/Morocco

“Life at ‘VeCo’ is what each student makes of it and this is what I like about it: the freedom to choose.”

Vladimir Dakov, Bulgaria

“Teachers are very reachable and know their students on a first name basis. ‘VeCo’ also allows for students to give presentations and be very involved. The courses and their content are very interesting and I feel they successfully prepare students for the future.”

Joris Lacroix, France

“Inspiring professors have turned my fear into my strength and influenced my study path: despite being scared of Economics before entering the college, I will graduate with a concentration in Economics.”

Thi Xuan Hieu Ngo, Vietnam

“One of the greatest advantages of studying at Vesalius College is the opportunity to work in small groups. Such an atmosphere encourages interaction in the classroom. Courses are also organised in such a way that each student can find something suitable on the basis of his/her interests and develop inner potential.”

Maša Lekic, Montenegro

“Vesalius College offers a brilliant opportunity for those who enjoy mingling with different nationalities in both the student body and faculty. Meeting new students here is easy as Vesalius has a rather small community, making us all part of one big family. If necessary, administrative and academic help are easily available, which is a great privilege these days. I have not met anyone yet who does not consider his or her experience at Vesalius a success!”

Henri Van Lennep, Belgium

The political science courses especially drew me in as I could choose from a variety of political systems of various countries in a small and intimate setting. It was also wonderful to speak in different languages on a daily basis. I could not have asked for more.

Stephanie Bergeman, USA, St. Louis University

“An important aspect is that at Vesalius College you have the advantage of being in a small college but also have the facilities you would enjoy in a much bigger university, through the affiliation with the VUB. I think this is a successful combination.”

Elisabeta Craita Per, Romania

Academic Programmes

Academic StructureThe Vesalius College undergraduate programme offers a three-year European Bachelor’s degree in accordance with the Bologna Reform of higher education in Europe. The academic programmes are designed to challenge students intellectually and personally, while providing them the resources and faculty support to excel, preparing them for post-graduate studies or to begin a successful career.

The teaching philosophy and methods are based on American-style education, including interactive classroom discussions and continuous student assessment. Students select a major field of study but are also exposed to a wider range of disciplines and subjects in the Core Curriculum and in the wide choice of elective courses. This educational system is designed to instill within students a spirit of critical inquiry, ethical responsibility, and personal fulfillment that lasts a lifetime.

Quality InstructionThe quality and accessibility of the Vesalius faculty is at the very core of the academic experience at the College. With a diverse faculty, over 90% of them holding PhD’s, students learn from experts with international backgrounds and perspectives. Low student-to-faculty ratios mean that instructors are accessible, enabling the forging of close working relationships where instructors take personal interest in the progress and success of their students.

Guidance from Academic AdvisorsOnce enrolled in the programme, students will be assigned an Academic Advisor who will work with the student to personalise his/her course schedule. Our academic advisors assist students in identifying relevant courses and support them throughout their academic career at Vesalius College.

Vesalius College’s Bachelor degree programmes have 3 essential components:

The Core Curriculum A distinctive feature of the Bachelor’s programme at Vesalius College is the Core Curriculum. Core courses are taken by all students and add breadth to the Vesalius learning experience. By conforming topics such as Critical Thinking and Writing, students learn to approach problems from different perspectives. In doing so, they learn how to be flexible and adapt to change; to nurture a spirit of critical inquiry; to lead others by exercising intellectual judgment; and to communicate effectively with diverse groups of people across many cultures and languages.

Major All students at Vesalius College will choose a major – the academic subject in which they will specialise. Within each major, there are certain areas of concentration, reflecting more specialised pathways of related courses.

The Major Elective and Free Elective Courses These are courses chosen by the student. Major electives are within the major and offer the student a wide choice in their area of specialisation. Others are free electives and allow students to pursue interests outside their major. Besides the electives that Vesalius College offers, students can also take elective courses with one of our partner institutions in Brussels. The courses vary from Music History or Literature and Philosophy to Chinese language and Physical Education.

With an extensive list of international partner institutions, Vesalius provides students with the possibility to earn credit towards their Vesalius College degree in a variety of exciting and challenging environments that are rich in both academic and cultural diversity. Vesalius students may study abroad during the fall or spring semester or during the summer term. They are eligible to study abroad in the second semester of their second year or in the first semester of their third year at Vesalius College. Incoming students Vesalius College has welcomed study abroad students since 1990 when it received its first American student. For more than twenty years, juniors, seniors, and occasionally sophomores from a wide range of private and state universities and colleges in North America and from many other countries worldwide have studied for all or part of a year at Vesalius College. As a result, Vesalius College has many years of experience in understanding the academic backgrounds and needs of international students studying abroad and in meeting those

needs within the University’s curriculum and advisory system. At Vesalius College, study abroad students are fully integrated into the normal academic programme. Their workload corresponds as closely as possible with that of regular second- or third-year Vesalius students and they are integrated into Vesalius College’s social life and extra-curricular activities. Most students feel quickly at home here and find it easy to meet other students and participate fully in the life of the University.

Vesalius College offers students the exceptional opportunity to gain professional experience while earning university credit via its exclusive Internship Programme. It can offer students employment opportunity with one of its 50+ prestigious internship sponsors in Brussels ranging from multi-national corporations and media houses to international government organisations and NGOs.

The Vesalius Internship Programme (VIP) aims to benefit students and sponsors alike with an experience of mutual enrichment. VIP partners provide interns with a professional experience that goes beyond the scope of a traditional internship. VIP sponsors have long ago acknowledged the value of Vesalius College students as a select group of young, dynamic and highly educated individuals with a vast international experience. As such, Vesalius interns are easily trusted with meaningful and important projects within the host organisation.

Whether having full responsibility for a project, or working as team members within a bigger enterprise, students have the opportunity to exercise their skills and to provide the host organisation with a high-quality output.

The internship counts as an academic course during the semester, and can be taken as a Major Elective. Degree-seeking students can earn 6 ECTS credits (3 US academic credits) for the “single” internship option. Study abroad students may also opt to extend the internship such that more hours are worked per week. This “double” internship option is worth 12 ECTS credits (6 US credits). For all students participating in the internship course, it stands to reason that the entry on their CV will look outstanding.

For more information on the internship programme, please visit the webpage: www.vesalius.edu/career/vip

“The Vesalius Internship Programme provides great value for FEDMA. It enables us to do small projects which are valuable to our membership and would not have been possible to conduct without the intern from Vesalius Internship Programme (VIP). The VIP management is effective, very well organised and highly professional.

We have been very impressed by the quality of the students. Most of them do not have any real professional experience; still it takes them less than weeks, maybe days, to adapt to a highly professional environment with tight deadlines and great responsibilities. In fact, we have employed a Vesalius Alumnus as our PR and Communications Manager based on her great performance during the VIP programme.”

Student Services Vesalius College offers students the best of both worlds: the personal attention and community environment of a small college and access to the resources of major universities. The College also shares academic events, guest lectures and participates in faculty exchanges with the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, the Université Libre de Bruxelles, the University of Kent at Brussels and Boston University.

Research and Library ResourcesStudents at Vesalius have access to extensive resources for research at three major libraries: the library at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, the library at the Université Libre de Bruxelles and The Royal Library, Belgium’s national library. Together they provide students with access to over five million books. In addition, students also have access to a wide variety of online resources including thousands of journals and newspapers, library catalogues and databases.

Computer ResourcesComputer and internet access is an essential part of student life. The Vesalius College computer lab features PCs and Apple computers as well as facilities for students with laptops to connect to the College’s computer network. Students also have access to the extensive computer resources at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, including the free campus-wide wireless network.

Career Counseling To assist students with life after college, Vesalius College offers students in their final year the opportunity to attend career seminars and individual coaching sessions. This free service aims to help graduates gain a competitive advantage in the job market after graduation. This is achieved by helping students determine their career objectives in addition to acquiring the skill sets necessary to achieve their professional goals. The workshops range from CV and cover letter writing to information on networking and how to apply for various internship programs offered in Brussels.

Student Life

Vesalius College is part of a broader student community in Brussels that consists of four other universities and graduate schools concentrated in a single area and that supports a vibrant student lifestyle. Easily accessible by bus, train, tram, or metro, the area has everything to meet student needs including affordable housing, two on-campus cafeterias, libraries, banks, shops, markets, restaurants, bars and live entertainment, as well as organised athletic activities and state-of-the-art sports facilities.

Vesalius Student GovernmentThe Vesalius Student Government (VSG) is an elected student body and acts as the main liaison between students and the academic administration of Vesalius College. The VSG appoints representatives to the Academic Council, which is the academic governing body of the College that regularly meets with the Dean on matters that affect the students at the College. The VSG also has a social function, organising welcoming activities for new students, sports activities, seasonal parties, drama evenings and other social activities throughout the year.

Academic Related ProjectsAcademic Related Projects (ARP) is an initiative taken by a group of motivated students seeking to organise stimulating extracurricular activities for students. These include networking possibilities, presentations, guest lectures and paper-writing competitions, as well as peer-tutoring sessions.

Sports and Outdoor ActivitiesVesalius students have full access to the athletics facilities of the Vrije Universiteit

Brussel (VUB). With numerous spacious parks and a vast forest at the doorstep of the city of Brussels, students also have many opportunities for biking, running, rollerblading, horseback riding, taking a scenic stroll, or simply for relaxing. The VUB sports facilities include two large multipurpose sports halls (for indoor soccer, basketball, badminton, tennis, etc.), one martial arts hall, three squash courts, a swimming pool and one climbing wall. All facilities are indoors and, thus, are always available regardless of the weather

For those planning to continue their education, assistance in choosing the right graduate programmes is also offered.

Psychological Counseling Moving to a new country, living on their own, experiencing exam pressure; these are just a few of the major changes that students can go through when they enroll in Vesalius College. Vesalius College offers psychological counseling, free of cost, to students who feel they would like to talk about missing home, about exam pressure or about any other challenges they might face.

Food Services The good and wholesome food offered by the VUB restaurant is definitely a good deal. Every day, the campus restaurant serves a wide selection of warm and cold dishes, and the cafeteria serves snacks, sandwiches and drinks, all at student-friendly prices.

Students pay a fixed price depending on the chosen dishes. The set menus include soup, a main course and a dessert as well as free tap water.

The Cafeteria serves breakfast, sandwiches and drinks. Students can also find two trendy snack bars on campus: ‘t Complex and Opinio.

Health Services The health care centre at the VUB campus provides medical assistance to students and staff. Medical assistance includes consultation in case of illness, accidents, small medical interventions, vaccinations, preventive care, etc.

conditions. Students also have access to a state-of-the-art fitness complex. This sports center consists of a 1,500 m² fitness and cardio area, a spinning studio, two large changing rooms, a relaxation area, a solarium and a dance/aerobics studio.

Next to its indoor infrastructure, the VUB Sports Department also has outdoor sports fields, including one synthetic soccer field and a brand new athletics track and rugby pitch.

A membership fee and/or usage fee (discounted for students) is applied.

Housing Moving to a new city can be both stressful and confusing. To help students get settled in Brussels and ready to begin classes, the College provides them with links to help find suitable off-campus housing. Vesalius College does not have on-campus housing. Students are responsible for making their own housing arrangements. With a large number of universities and higher education institutions available in Brussels, student rooms are widely available.

Study Abroad students who join Vesalius College for one semester have the opportunity to stay with a French or Dutch-speaking host family. These families are committed to enriching the study abroad experience for our international students while always coming away with positive, fulfilling experiences of their own. It is evident that this type of accommodation provides the student with a unique experience that allows for insight into the everyday life of Belgian

families, Belgian culture, and social norms. Students acquire many valuable elements by living the life of a “native”, sharing daily conversations at the dinner table and by taking part in the daily life of their host families without necessarily having to limit their individual freedom.

Life in Brussels The liberal arts philosophy of Vesalius’ academic programme is reflected in the life of its students. The College encourages students to work hard to reach their academic potential, but also to live a full life away from books and classes. Brussels has a tremendous amount to offer those interested in exploring “The Capital of Europe;” and students quickly discover the city to be vibrant and cosmopolitan with a warm, friendly charm. With 30% of the Brussels population being foreign nationals, the city has something to offer for every taste and culture in the areas of music, dancing, cuisine, art, associations and much, much, more.

The city is also host to an excellent music scene, both in clubs and at numerous festivals where almost any type of music can be found, from local musicians to the biggest names on tour. Those interested in dancing will find many venues for practicing their art, as well as classes to learn a variety of dances including the salsa, quickstep, tango, swing and all other classic and contemporary styles.

Brussels has numerous museums and art galleries ranging from classical to modern art. Brussels also houses a national symphony, opera and theatre. In addition, the city has a rich variety of architecture including Baroque buildings from the 1600s, classic Flemish, art deco, art nouveau, and the modern architecture of the European Union buildings.

Beyond BrusselsGoing to school in Brussels affords students the unique opportunity for some great (and quick and inexpensive) travels and getaways. Belgium’s inter-city trains provide quick access to the coast of Flanders, Medieval Bruges, Antwerp (“The diamond capital of the world”) and the wooded hills of the Ardennes. Looking beyond Belgium, Brussels is the ideal center from which to visit the rest of Europe. Paris is a short 90 minutes by fast train and London, Cologne and Amsterdam are just two and one-half hours away. In addition, most major European cities are two hours or less away by plane.

Admissions

Applying to Vesalius CollegeVesalius College seeks to enroll students who are qualified to meet the challenges of its academic programmes and who are willing to participate fully in the intellectual and social life of the College in a spirit of openness and tolerance. Admission to the College is selective. We endeavour to accept students whose records indicate that they possess the qualities needed to achieve academic success in the degree programme of their choice.

Admission decisions take into account the candidate’s secondary school performance, examination results and English language competence, as well as demonstrated personal qualities and character.

Vesalius College processes applications on a rolling basis. Admissions decisions are usually made within three weeks after the complete application is received. Applications will be considered as long as places remain in the class to which they are applying.

To apply, candidates must submit:• A completed application form;• Official academic credentials and

transcripts (showing courses and grades) from all secondary schools and universities attended, including public examination results and official results of any national or regional examination (usually taken in the candidate’s country of residence). If the credentials and transcripts are not in English, official certified translations are required and will be accepted only if accompanied by the document in its original language;

• Two letters of recommendation (from persons familiar with the candidate’s academic work; for example, teachers, professors, guidance counsellors, or school directors);

• A non-refundable application fee;• Proof of identity in the form of a

photocopy of either a passport or a national identity card;

• Results of an English proficiency examination may be required for some applicants (TOEFL or IELTS;

• Official scores of the SAT test or the ACT test may be required. Candidates should contact the Admissions Office to determine whether they must take one of these examinations.

Official Credentials Credentials should be sent directly from the authorising organisation or institution. Transcripts must be certified by the Registrar or Head Teacher of the educational institution issuing the documents. Transcripts must be sent in an official envelope of the institution that is sealed and then signed across the back flap by the sending official. Photocopies of original documents are not accepted as official transcripts.Vesalius College accepts credentials in English, Dutch, French, and German. For all other languages, official translations by a certified translator (whose signature is authenticated) are required and are accepted only when accompanied by the document in its original language.

Transfer AdmissionVesalius College may award transfer credits on a limited basis for courses taken at the university level in other accredited institutions. The minimum requirements for grades depend upon the school where the credit was earned and on the student’s intended major within Vesalius College. All transfer credits will be awarded at the discretion of the Admissions Committee. For more information, please contact the Admission Office.

Visa Information Students who are not EU citizens must obtain a student visa in order to live in Belgium and attend the College. The time it takes to obtain a student visa may vary from one to several months depending on a variety of factors including the student’s age and country of origin.
