“What then is a parish? It is the smallest section of the one universal flock which has been entrusted to Peter by the Lord.

Under the authority of a responsible priest who has received the care of souls from his

bishop, the parish is, within the Church of Jesus Christ, the first community of Christian life; it is a

community cut to human dimensions, in which the shepherd can know his flock and the flock can know

their shepherd … At the heart of this area, we find the parish church with its bell-tower, its baptistery, its

confessional, its altar and tabernacle, a symbol of unity and the centre of community life.”

THE “YEAR OF THE EUCHARIST”,

June 2020-2021

TTTToday’s External Solemnity of the Feast of Corpus Christi has an added unction. Our

Archbishop Cardinal Sean has proclaimed the next twelve months a special “Year of the Eucharist” for the Archdiocese of Boston. It is an opportunity for us to intensify our Catholic faith-belief in the Miracle of Christ’s Real Presence in the consecrated Bread and Wine of the Holy Eucharist through prayer, devotion, and on-going instruction.

It is no secret at all that a great many professed Catholics are unlearned in what the Church actually teaches about the “Mystery of Faith”, the Holy Eucharist. They either understand it in a very confused and even contradictory way; or they refuse the orthodox belief altogether substituting for it a “Jesus-is-present-for-me” variety of expression. But let us be honest—how can the lay faithful be expected to internalize the Catholic doctrine of the Holy Eucharist when so many priests do not act as if they have internalized it either?

The Holy Eucharist is an objective reality, even if it requires the grace of faith for an individual to grasp it. If the conditions for validity set forth by the Church are met (valid matter, valid minister, sufficient intention) then the living Jesus Christ is present— “Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity”— under the appearances of the consecrated Bread and Wine. If any one of these conditions for validity is not met, then the living Christ is not present in the Holy Eucharist, no matter how much we might wish it to be so. The bread is only bread, and the wine is only wine.

Pastor’s NotePastor’s NotePastor’s NotePastor’s Note

Let us begin this Eucharistic Holy Year as a parish community with a desire to learn and learn-again the “Mystery of Faith”, the Mysterium Fidei. Let us begin by entering into the spirit of this prayer entitled A Short Visit to the Blessed Sacrament Before Meditation composed by St. John Henry Cardinal Newman. It is a prayer which expresses most beautifully and succinctly what the Catholic faith means by the Real Presence.

THE REAL PRESENCE

The doctrine of the “REAL PRESENCE”

holds that “In the Sacrament of the Eucharist

the Body and Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ

together with His Soul and Divinity are

contained truly, really and substantially, and

not merely in sign, figure or virtue.” (Decree

from the Council of Trent)

THREE ERRORS refuted by this Decree:

• That the Body of Christ in the Eucharist is only there by REPRESENTATION.

• That the Body of Christ in the Eucharist is only

VIRTUALLY PRESENT by the effects of the

sacrament.

• That the Body of Christ in the Eucharist is only

there IDEALLY by apprehension and faith.

The REAL PRESENCE is effected by

TRANSUBSTANTIATION. Both doctrines

are of faith, but they are not to be confused

with one another.

LATIN MASS PROPERS: CORPUS CHRISTI

INTROIT: Ps. 80:17 He fed them with the fat of wheat (alleluia); and filled them with honey out of the rock (alleluia, alleluia, alleluia) Ps. 80:2 Rejoice unto God our helper; sing aloud to the God of Jacob. V. Glory be to the Father..

COLLECT O God, who in this wonderful sacrament has left us a memorial of Thy passion, grant us, we be-seech Thee, so to venerate the sacred mysteries of Thy Body and Blood, that we may ever perceive within us the fruit of Thy redemption. Thou Who livest and reignest…

EPISTLE: 1 Corinthians 11:23-29 Brethren I have received of the Lord, that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus, the same night in which He was betrayed, took bread, and giving thanks, broke, and said: Take ye and eat, this is My Body which shall be delivered for you; this do for the commemoration of Me. In like manner also the chalice, after He had supped, saying: This chalice is the new testament in My Blood; this do ye, as often as you shall show the death of the Lord until He come. Therefore whosever shall eat this bread, or drink of the chalice of the Lord unworthily, shall be guilty of the Body and the Blood of the Lord. But let a man prove himself; and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of the chalice. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily eateth and drinketh judgment to himself, not discerning the Body of the Lord.

GRADUAL: Ps. 144:15-16 The eyes of all hope in Thee, O Lord, and Thou givest them meat in due season. V. Thou openest Thy hand, and fillest every living creature with Thy blessing. ALLELUIA: John 6:56-57 Alleluia, alleluia. givest them meat in due season. V. Thou openest Thy hand, and fillest My Flesh is meat indeed, and My Blood is drink indeed: he that eateth My Flesh and drinketh My Blood, abideth in Me, and I in him.

SEQUENCE: “LAUDA SION”

GOSPEL: John 6:56-59 AAAAt that time, Jesus said to the multitudes of the Jews: My Flesh is meat indeed, and My Blood is drink indeed. He that eateth My Flesh, and drinketh My Blood, abideth in Me and I in him. As the living Father hath sent Me, and I live by the Father, so that eateth of Me, the same also shall live by Me. This is the bread that came down from Heaven. Not as your fathers did eat manna and are dead. He that eateth this Bread shall live forever.

OFFERTORY: Leviticus 21:6 The priests of the Lord offer incense and loaves to God, and therefore they shall be holy to their God, and shall not defile His name. (Alleluia)

SECRET We beseech Thee, O Lord, mercifully grant to Thy Church the gifts of unity and peace, which are mystically signified beneath the gifts we offer. Through our Lord.

COMMUNION: I Corinthians 11:26-27 As often as you shall eat this Bread and drink the Chalice, you shall show the death of the Lord until He come: therefore whosoever shall eat this Bread or drink the Chalice of the Lord unworthily, shall be guilty of the Body and Blood of the Lord. (Alleluia)..

POSTCOMMUNION: Grant us, Lord, we pray, to be filled with the everlasting enjoyment of Thy divinity, which is prefigured by our reception here in time of Thy precious Body and Blood. Thou who art God. Amen.
