Where is the VSB backup data stored?

In North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific-Japan, Veritas SaaS Backup is operated from two load-balanced

data centers located in proximity of one another in each of the serviced regions. Each regional pair of data

centers is physically separated. Each facility is designed to run all day, every day, and employs various

measures to help protect operations from power failure, physical intrusion, and network outages. Data is

automatically replicated at the storage layer to help guard against unexpected hardware failures and ensure

that your data is available when you need it. We keep four copies of data within a single region.

How does VSB offering differ from what MS is offering or will offer in future?

There has always been "built-in backup" with MS products going back 30 years and there has always been a

healthy market for dedicated backup solutions. We don't expect this to change with O365. Consensus is that

MS has not provided a true backup / restore solution as the new OneDrive feature is based on versioning.

Can restore be initiated by end-users, or does admin have to control?

Backup and Restore is admin controlled. Self-service restore UI is in roadmap.

Can the initial backup be done faster on O365?

Yes. The ustomer can call Microsoft, and request for the throttling limits to be raised. This can be done for a period of up to 90 days. The customer should request the following values be changed:

EwsMaxBurst: Unlimited EwsRechargeRate: Unlimited EwsCutoffBalance: Unlimited And highest limits available for EWSMaxConcurrency.

This is a standard procedure, done through normal Microsoft support. These changes only affect Exchange and not SharePoint, OneDrive or Groups.

Do regional data centers replicate to other regions (e.g. US center replicate date to

Europe)?

No. For data sovereignty reasons we do not replicate data from one geo to another.

Can customer store data in their own cloud provider?

Not at this time. Planned enhancement to "pass through" to AWS, Azure, and "bring your own cloud".

Will we have integration with NetBackup console, etc

Possible future enhancement, Level of integration TBD. We believe the market may not even want this. Need to validate the demand.

Will we build additional data centers in other countries?

We will look at business cases and regional laws to determine if/when additional data centers are warranted.

Will customers be able to beta or demo before buying?

How do we license Shared Mailboxes?

Customers need to buy licenses for active individual and shared mailboxes, that means an active O365 license must be assigned. There is no charge for the transfer of data from O365 to SaaS Backup, that is part of our subscription service.

What happens if a customer allows their VSB subscription to expire?

If a customer allows their subscription to expire, then they immediately lose access to their account and their account will be scheduled for deletion 90 days after expiration. Even though they have 1 year retention in their account…that is included in the subscription…and in order for them to restore any data they need to have an active subscription to access their account and restore.

Some customers want to purge email every 90 days, can we do this?

Not at this time. Retention is one year minimum.

Can you buy some users for O365 and a subset for G-suite?

Yes. You can purchase different number of users per workload. For example,… 100 for O365… 75 for G Suite, etc.

What happens to the data of a user who leaves the company?

The user’s data is retained until it falls outside the retention period. You do not need a license for inactive users nor in O365.

Is license enforcement via Veritas tool or honor system?

There is license enforcement with the product. You can only use up to the # of licenses purchased. There is a button to purchase additional licenses in the settings page.

Is the solution GDPR ready?

Yes. VSB is ISAE 3402 Type II certified and also ISO 27001 compliant. These two encompass the majority of GDPR requirements. There is no single (official) "GDPR Certification".

Will there be a need for customers and/or account teams to reconcile entitlement vs.

unprotected seats?

No. There is license enforcement with the product. You can only use up to the # of licenses purchased. There is a button to purchase additional licenses in the settings page.

What is setup/onboarding process?

Very simple. Takes a few minutes regardless of # of users. Here is a click-thru demo

Why would someone license 2 years upfront with only one-year data retention?

Some customers may want to buy multi-year retention upfront to ensure no gaps.

Is 30 days evaluation enough?

This is common amongst SaaS offerings and consistent with industry practices. If more users and duration is required, trial account can be migrated into a PoC account.

What if a customer wants to integrate with Backup Exec?

Since Backup Exec 20.5 “SaaS Backup Reporting Integration” is available, to provide an extra layer of visibility and protection to all your data, including your O365 workloads.

Is there reporting that shows logs of backups and success/failure?

Yes. The Veritas SaaS Backup – Job Monitor shows a full overview of all connector activity with details about the job, such as the size of the backup, the number of files backed up, the size of files restored, which files failed to restore.

Are backups random or scheduled? Different per workload?

Backups are fixed at 6 times per day (every 4 hours). May vary depending on amount of data on any given day and SaaS providers may throttle bandwidth during certain times of the day or under certain service plans to decrease congestion over their networks.

Is there a search capability for users?

Yes. There is a search capability in each area of the product.

Can this integrate with Active Directory?

Yes. VSB SSO integrates with Azure AD or using ADFS.

Is this STIG and FIPS compliant?

Not at this time.

If data restored to original location, will it overwrite what's already there?

Yes. Files will be overwritten if previous version exists. Likely restore scenarios are when file is missing or corrupt, but users can now also restore Mail, Calendar, and OneDrive folders and subfolders to a newly created separate folder in Office 365. This restore method does not overwrite data and offers a less invasive way to restore your data.

Can this be used by MSP to offer service? Multi tenancy?

Product is fully multi-tenant capable. Currently those tenants need to be on boarded via Veritas support. Future plans include a console whereby MSP can add/subtract and manage their own tenants.

Can this scale to unlimited users? TB?

Yes. VSB can scale to unlimited users and TB.

Is there an audit function for reporting?

Yes. VSB can generate detailed audit report showing every login, action and associated user and IP address, etc.

Can we backup users who are tagged as "litigation hold"?

Yes, so long as that litigation hold occurs after VSB is deployed. If users are tagged LH before VSB is deployed, then we can do some custom scripting. By default, VSB protects users who are currently in Active Directory.

Can I add retention after my initial purchase thereby increasing my depth of backups?

Yes. Additional retention can be added at any time.

Can I control VSB through another console or federated UI?

VSB has a robust API architecture. Integrations with 3rd party consoles are possible and will be considered on case-by-case basis. A fee may apply for this type of work.

Can I have different retention levels for different users within my organization?

Currently all users with a workload (e.g. O365) must be set to same retention levels. You can set the retention period on individual connectors. This allows you to customize and set retention according to your retention policy. If you have various retention periods depending on data type and/or groups or users, you have the ability to do so by creating a separate connector for each.

Can I license just email (Exchange) and not OneDrive and/or SharePoint?

No. License is for everything (all of O365). We don’t license just email or OneDrive, etc.

Can I reduce my license commitment mid-way through my subscription?

You can add users any time, but you cannot subtract users until your current subscription is up for renewal.

Is VSB Fed Ramp certified?

Not at this time.

For SharePoint, does VSB backup lists and workflows?

No. Currently VSB only protects user level SharePoint data. We do not backup config data like lists and workflows. Those can be exported for SharePoint manually.

Does VSB encrypt data at rest and in flight?

Yes. 256-bit encryption at rest and in flight. See detailed security whitepaper for more information about security.

How long does the initial backup take?

Initial backup can take days or weeks depending on size, number of users, number of files, etc. We have some unique technology that can help open multiple ports to speed this up. This is a manual config right now and can be requested for large tenants.

Is there any charge for movement of data or restores?

No. Unlike many cloud storage providers, we do not charge for ingest or restore of data.

Does Microsoft charge money for restoring data or backups?

No. Microsoft has no charge for backup and/or restore data movement.

Can VSB be configured to "purge" email data older than 90 days or some other set

number of days for legal compliance purposes?

Not at this time. Email must be retained as per the retention period which is one year (minimum).

Can I download all/some of my O365 data to local storage?

Yes, you can download any or all of the O365 tenant data to local storage in the form of a ZIP file.

Can I import data from one user to another?

Yes. There is an import function on the main screen in VSB.

How does VSB handles errors? Are there many errors?

VSB does not impact local infrastructure and therefore rarely experiences errors. Additionally, VSB has robust self-remediation and error handling to eliminate most of the errors customary with backup operations.
