The end of Term Four brings with it mixed emotions. There is anticipation in the air during the season of Advent in the lead up to Christmas. Particular thanks to the School Executive, Assistant Principals Emma Tierney and Nathan Beckett and Religious Education

Coordinator, Rosemary McAllister who have provided such valuable loyalty and support during 2018. I would also like to

warmly acknowledge Mary Zeeman, Executive Assistant. Mary has been an incredible support to me with unwavering

dedication and commitment to the school. I will certainly miss this.

As I move to new pastures with the challenge of beginning Catherine McAuley Catholic College, I wish Mr Bernard Bur-gess a very smooth and successful transition to the role of Principal commencing next year. Bernard is well known to the All Saints College community where he has been both Head of Campus and Principal at St Peter’s. He is very much look-ing forward to joining San Clemente and I wish him every happiness in his new position. Finally, I thank all parents and carers for their support in my time at the school. I wish you all a very enjoyable holiday and a happy and holy Christmas. It has been a pleasure and a privilege. God bless.

Assistant Principal - Wellbeing

“Welfare + wellness + wellbeing = Total school wellbeing”

This concept led me to reflect on the efforts of the San Clemente Wellbeing team throughout 2018. San Clemente prides

itself on showing compassion for those who are struggling, guidance for those recovering and a framework that can lead

to a thriving community. To achieve this there are a number of factors that must work. Firstly, wellbeing needs a whole

school approach. At San Clemente through our PosED program, we have continued to raise the wellbeing knowledge and

commitment of all staff and encouraged our student body to thrive. Increased Professional Development over the last

few years and more importantly an increased focus has led to all staff prioritising the welfare of students. Our Home-

room system has encouraged staff to take on a “Mentoring” role with students to maintain strong connections to famil-

iar staff, hopefully throughout their four years at SCM.

Secondly, I would like to acknowledge the dedication, commitment, professionalism, sacrifice and passion for wellbeing

displayed by our 4 Year Coordinators. For our Wellbeing system to flourish and sustain, it relies heavily on the work load

of our Year Coordinators. They display compassion on a daily basis, demonstrate incredible patience, genuine guidance

and care for not only the students in their year group but students throughout the school. Their teamwork and support

of each other often goes unnoticed. Further to this, they are the props on which I lean. Their work ethic and emotional

balance provide our Wellbeing team with the energy to handle difficult situations and the foresight to provide those

young people within our community a voice. On top of all this, they are teachers, with lessons to deliver, exams to mark,

Anna O’Brien has fulfilled the role of Mathematics Teacher this year and has been appointed in a permanent capacity

from the start of 2019.

Loretta Browne has been appointed permanently to the position of PDHPE/RE after fulfilling this role in a temporary ca-

pacity this year. Loretta has also played an active role in supporting the Leadership Sport Portfolio.

Katherine Smith has been appointed as English Teacher. Katherine is known to our community having taught English in

2017, prior to spending this year at Merewether High School. Katherine has also remained connected to San Clemente this

year through her part time role in supporting staff and students with literacy of which she will continue in 2019.

Christine Brown will begin in the role as French/English Teacher. Christine has supported San Clemente in various capaci-

ties during the past few years.

Mathew Grandin will begin in a job share capacity as English Teacher. He spent the past two years teaching in the United

Kingdom and prior to this did his internship at St Pius X Adamstown. We welcome back Meredith MacDonald who will job

share this role. Meredith has been on Maternity Leave and in past years taught English and fulfilled the role as Year Coordi-

nator.

Priscilla Payne has been appointed to the role of HSIE/RE teacher for 2019. Priscilla has completed her internship at St

Francis Xavier’s College this year and subsequently has engaged in casual work there.

Ashley Ruddy & Joshua Lam have been appointed in Science teaching positions. Both Ashley and Josh are known to us all

having joined the Science faculty during the year.

Other staffing changes include:

Bronwyn Denham who will begin in her new role as Administration Coordinator. Bronwyn has played a key role in stu-

dent wellbeing as Year Coordinator for past four years.

Mitch Allan current Careers Advisor, who will fulfil the role of Year 8 Coordinator in 2019.

Leticia Wakely will return to the role of Teaching & Learning Coordinator (HSIE). Thank you to Leticia for her contribu-

tions to the day to day operation of the school this year as Administration Coordinator.

Sheridan Pruteanu has been appointed as Careers Advisor for 2019. Sheridan has had close links with Careers through

her leadership of the HSIE faculty this year and I thank her for her leadership of this team during 2018.

Page 4: Veritas No 14, 11 November 2017 - San Clemente …...Veritas No 14, 11 November 2017 Dear Parent/Carer, Students & Friends of San Clemente Veritas 18, 14 December 2018 ahead to 2019

reports to write and students to work with in classrooms. Our Year Coordinators do not leave San Clemente when they

travel home of an evening (and it’s often the evening when they leave.) Despite my words, the care they show our stu-

dents is sustained in their thoughts beyond the working hours or working days of the week. Personally, I wouldn’t have it

any other way. It’s this type of dedication that maintains the high expectations in wellbeing that we strive for in our school

community.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Bronwyn Denham for all her hard work, dedication and care of Year 7

throughout 2018 and during the last 3 years as a member of our Wellbeing team. Bronwyn’s no nonsense approach to all

matters brings a welcomed level of calmness to those she works with. I have no doubt that her strengths in organisation

and planning will now be welcomed at a whole school level as she embarks on a new leadership role at SCM, Administra-

tion Coordinator. It is on this note that I would like to announce our Year Coordinators for 2019: Year 7 – Nicholas Marsh;

Year 8 – Mitch Allan; Year 9 – Kate Tolfree; Year 10 – Patrick Doyle. Further to this, Jenny Morris continues as our Wellbe-

ing team as School Counsellor, 4 days a week, Sally Lykouras will continue as our Pastoral Care Worker, 2 days a week and

Bryan Rowe, Aboriginal Education Teacher 3 days a week. I hope that the upcoming holiday break is a chance for our Year

Coordinators, teachers, mentors, executive, support staff, students and families to have an opportunity to recharge, re-

fresh and revitalise toward an exciting 2019.

Nathan Beckett, Assistant Principal (Wellbeing)

I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of all staff to wish Scott Donohoe all the very best as he leaves our school community to begin a new chapter at Catherine MacAuley Catholic College, Medowie.

Scott joined San Clemente in 2011 as Assistant Principal, Pastoral Care and in true Scott style, he immediately changed his title to Assis-tant Principal, Wellbeing. This act alone sums up the positive, solu-tions focused approach that Scott has brought to our community. Scott has a passion for education and a desire to maintain high ex-pectations. He has achieved this through leading from the front, modelling his work ethic for all staff, consistently present and visible, compassionate to the core with an authentic desire to build commu-nity.

His transition to Principal in 2016 brought with it new opportunities, new vision and ensured San Clemente finished its 1st 100 years as a leading light within schools in the region. The list of achievements in his time at San Clemente is long, but his innovation as the architect of our Positive Education framework and his drive to bring alive the Do-minican charism will be a legacy long lived out within our community. Probably more important than all of this, is that Scott is a quality hu-man being, leading with kindness, empathy and in San Clemente style, a lot of fun. He is the model of a true Dominican educational leader and for this, our staff, students and families thank him.

Nathan Beckett, Assistant Principal (Wellbeing)

Assistant Principal- Teaching and Learning

The season of Advent and the days of Christmas are a really beautiful time of the year. There is among most people a

sense of hope, of wonder, of anticipation and overwhelmingly, a sense of great joy. It is a time where we are challenged to

bring the Christmas story to fruition by extending kindness and thoughtfulness to others.

There have been many highlights in 2018 - far too many to acknowledge in this short space. Suffice to say that in the daily

busyness that is San Clemente, there are quite an extraordinary number of achievements that are the direct result of the

creativity, initiative and dedication of a particularly motivated, gifted and hard-working staff and student body and a won-

derfully supportive extended community. While all these achievements are praiseworthy it is the development of many of

the students to become well-rounded and grounded people, able to show compassion and empathy for those around

them that is the real test of a successful school. I am very pleased to have witnessed this on many occasions throughout

the year.

To our Parents and Carers… I thank you, for your support to

reach the end point of 2018. I appreciate your warm welcome to

the San Clemente community and support working with your

children during 2018.

To our Students… I thank you, for all that you bring to our com-

munity, it is enriched every day by every one of you.

For our Yr 10 class of 2018, we now say goodbye, congratula-

tions, and wish you well for your future endeavours.

The San Clemente community are excited and anticipate our

new Yr 7 student cohort joining us in 2019 .

May you all enjoy the abundant blessings and peace of this Advent season. As Christmas approaches I would like to wish all

an enjoyable, safe and restful holidays and attentive holy-days as we celebrate the birth of the Prince of Peace who brings

with him great hope for our lives.

CHRISTMAS .. A REFLECTION

1 Corinthians 13 – a Christmas Version

If I decorate my house perfectly with plaid bows, strands of twinkling lights and shiny balls, but do not

show love to my family, I’m just another decorator.

If I slave away in the kitchen, baking dozens of Christmas cookies, preparing gourmet meals and arranging a

beautifully adorned table at mealtime, but do not show love to my family, I’m just another cook.

If I work at the soup kitchen, carol in the nursing home and give all that I have to charity, but do not show

love to my family, it profits me nothing.

If I trim the tree with shimmering angels and crocheted snowflakes, attend a myriad of holiday parties and

sing in the choir’s cantata but do not focus on Christ, I have missed the point.

Love stops the cooking to hug the child. Love sets aside the decorating to kiss the husband. Love is kind,

though harried and tired. Love doesn’t envy another’s home that has coordinated Christmas china and ta-

ble linens.

Love doesn’t yell at the kids to get out of the way, but is thankful they are there to be in the way. Love

doesn’t give only to those who are able to give in return but rejoices in giving to those who can’t.

Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails. Video games will

break, pearl necklaces will be lost, golf clubs will rust, but giving the gift of love will endure.

Over/………...

Page 6: Veritas No 14, 11 November 2017 - San Clemente …...Veritas No 14, 11 November 2017 Dear Parent/Carer, Students & Friends of San Clemente Veritas 18, 14 December 2018 ahead to 2019

Year 9 Students

I cannot believe that the school year is over. Where did the time go? It seems like only yesterday I was welcoming Year 9

to San Clemente. It has been an emotional, hectic and busy year, and the Christmas holidays will be welcomed by all. I am

honoured to be continuing with Year 9 in 2019, when they will be in their final year at San Clemente. Semester Two re-

ports are being mailed early next week. I encourage parents/carers to sit down with your child and discuss their report.

Identify areas that require improvement and most importantly how this improvement can be achieved. Areas could in-

clude:

ensuring all homework and assessment tasks are completed on time and with maximum effort,

revising study habits,

preparing more thoroughly for examinations,

improving attitude and effort in class.

For those students who achieved pleasing results the challenge is to maintain this commitment, attitude and effort. Con-gratulations to all Year 9 students who were recognised at Tuesday’s Academic Awards Ceremony. At the ceremony I em-phasised to Year 9 that expectations will be high but with the right attitude and work ethic anything is achievable. I would like to thank all the Year 9 mentor teachers for their hard work in 2018. Every day they spend time with the stu-

dents with their wellbeing first and foremost in their mind.

Parents, if you are stuck for stocking filler ideas, five plain sets of white socks would be a gift that will be worn for the ma-

jority of 2019. Black leather laced up shoes are also the only school shoes that are accepted at San Clemente – not train-

ers/vans or black canvas shoes with the academic uniform.

I would like to use this opportunity in the final newsletter of the year to wish all Year 9 students and their families a safe

and joyous Christmas. It is easy to get lost in the flurry of activity during the holiday season. May you get time to take in

the beauty and true meaning of the season and have a Merry Christmas! A final thought Year 9,

“May this Christmas bring joy and love to your heart and soul, and may you start the New Year on a beautiful note.

Wishing you all the best Christmas ever and a safe and happy New Year!”

Patrick Doyle, Year 9 Coordinator (Wellbeing)

Day 1 Year 7 (and new students in Years 8, 9, 10 from 9am-12noon)

Friday 01 February 2019

Day 1 Years 8, 9, 10

As a result ...

I believe that Christmas is more than a time for parties and ornaments; it is a time for remembering Christ and the

incarnation of God’s love in human flesh.

I believe there are gifts more important than the ones under the Christmas tree, the things we teach our children, the way we share ourselves with friends, and the industry with which we set about reshaping the world in our time. I believe that the finest carols are often sung by the poorest voices; from hearts made warm by the won-der of the season. I believe in the angel’s message that we should not be afraid - that the Child of Bethlehem is able to overcome all anxieties and insecurities. I believe in prayer and quietness as a way of appropriating Christmas—that if I wait in silence I will experi-ence the presence of the one born in the manger, for he lives today as surely as he lived then. I believe in going away from Christmas as the wise men went .. "another way." I want to be different when these days are past - more centred, more thoughtful, more caring.

Year 7 Students

Wow, what a year! I just cannot believe it is almost a year since I was welcoming you as fresh faced, nervous yet excited

Year 7 students for 2018. We have certainly been on a journey Year 7 and what fun we have had.

At the beginning of the year I challenged Year 7 students to grab opportunities with both hands, involve themselves in

school life and have no regrets! And they have not only risen to the challenge, they have thrived. It all started with camp

where students got to know their mentors and mentor group, they challenged themselves, got out of their comfort zone

and forged some strong relationships. And onwards and upwards from there. Throughout the year students have involved

themselves in activities such as DioSounds, Public Speaking, Sight and Sound, ASPIRE, Band, San Clemente’s Got Talent,

Maths and Science competitions, Rugby, League, Soccer, Netball the Tony Kelly Cup, just to name a few.

In amongst all of that, students have worked hard in the classroom and at our awards ceremony earlier this week we

acknowledged not only those with the top marks but also those who have tried their best, and that is all anyone can ask

of you. It is often very difficult to decide these awards and I would personally like to congratulate each and every one of

Year 7 for their efforts this year both inside and outside the classroom.

I would like to take this opportunity today to thank and acknowledge Year 7 mentor teachers. I could not do my job with-

out their support. They were there to meet Year 7 on their first day and have guided them safely through the year. Thank

you Mrs McInnes, Miss Hook, Miss Wilde, Mr Morrissey, Mr Veness, Mrs Marsh, Mrs Bellamy, Miss Drury and Miss Di-

Prinzio. A special thank you and best wishes to Mr Veness who will be leaving at the end of the year. I know our Year 7

students will l miss you. As for the rest of the team, I know the students will be in safe in your hands over the next 3 years.

I would also like to thank Mr Beckett, Mr Donohoe and Mrs Tierney for their continuous support of myself in my role as

Year Coordinator. It is a role I thoroughly enjoy and it has been a privilege working with our Year 7 students and their fam-

ilies this year.

As the year is coming to a close, I am a very proud Year Coordinator. Thank you to the students and families for letting me

into their lives and allowing me to help guide you through your first year at high school. It is a big adjustment and for

some it took a little longer than others, but we got there in the end. Throughout the year students have been active in

their community and connected with friends that started out as strangers. They have learnt not only school work but

what it means to be a part of the San Clemente. Year 7 have taken notice of others and have given of your time and tal-

ents. I have watched you grow not only in the physical sense but emotionally and mentally as well. They have certainly

developed a real presence not only with the staff, but the students as well. I congratulate you.

It was also announced at the awards ceremony that Mr Mitch Allan will be taking over as Year 8 Coordinator in 2019. I will

be moving into a different leadership role as Administration Coordinator. I will still be very present with the students how-

ever, I wish Mitch and the students all the very best for the year ahead.

For a final message to Year 7

“You’re braver than you believe and stronger and smarter than you think.”

Winnie the Pooh

I wish you all and your families a safe and enjoyable Christmas Break and see you in 2019.

As we approach the end of the term for Year 8, if you are feeling tired and ready for a break, reflect on some of the activities

of the semester and be proud of your achievements. Completion of many assessment tasks, participation in sports both rep-

resentative and house competitions, Sight and Sound, debating, music performances, excursions to Awabakal, Socktober

celebrations, Community days (Luna Park and Dixon Park) and finally examinations. Well done Year 8!

On behalf of Mrs Kate Tolfree and myself we would like to wish you, your family and loved ones a Happy Christmas. The

Season of Advent is a time for reflective preparation for the celebration of Christmas. It is a time to show love to those less

fortunate. Thank you for all your donations of items for the Vinnies Christmas appeal, these gifts can bring joy and peace to

an individual or family that may be facing difficult times. The Christmas Season is a perfect time for our community of San

Clemente to take notice of the needs of others, work as a community and give to those in need.

“Small acts, when multiplied by millions, can transform the world”

ed.

Mitch Allan – Careers Advisor

Farewell Mrs Daly December 2018 sees the end of an era for San Clemente as we farewell the lovely Mrs Renate Daly, who will retire as the school year ends. Mrs Daly has worked at San Clemente for 41 years, working across a range of students in her time, but known to us as an amazing Languages teacher and our ever-patient Sports Coordinator.

Mrs Daly’s warm, gentle, and loving nature, combined with a passion for travel and culture have been inspiration to generations of San Clemente students. The “Daly” impact is felt not only by the students in her classroom (or those who seek her out every Friday morning) but by every staff member who crosses her path.

We will miss you terribly Mrs Daly, but wish you all of the best in

your retirement! Know that you have made an indelible mark

on the San Clemente community.

This place will not be the same without you.

This term in Science…………………….

Year 7 had some uplifting lessons on forces including gravity, friction, magnetism, air re-

sistance, buoyancy and electrostatic. Some students designed boats to test buoyancy, oth-

ers designed paper planes to demonstrate air resistance. Other classes demonstrated bal-

anced and unbalanced forces in tug-o-war, or built crash capsules and helmets to protect

an egg on impact. Finally, there were a lot of giggles as some students had a hair raising

experience with the Van de Graff while testing the effect of electrostatic forces.

Year 8 “dug deep” into the Earth, investigating the lithosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere

and biosphere. A look at our resources and how we utilise Renewable and Non-Renewable

energy sources. The use of mining for precious metals and ores, the advantages of mining

and the ongoing impact on our environment. Students studied how we can protect our eco-

systems and this was combined with an excursion to the Awabakal Reserve at Dudley.

Year 9 had a bird’s eye look at ecosystems and how as a society we can rehabilitate land

areas previously over used by human intervention. After studying food webs and the inter-

actions within an ecosystem we visited the Wetlands at Shortland. This was once rugby

fields and the local rubbish tip. After the reintroduction of many bird species and plant life

the Wetlands is a beautiful place that exemplifies nature at its best. The term finished with

plate tectonics and the activities of the Earth’s crust including earthquakes, tsunamis and

volcanoes.

Year 10 finished on all things bright. They looked into our galaxies, what they are made of

and how a star is born! (No…….not the recent movie). The students finished their Science at

SCM with a Big Bang!

SPORT NEWS

Term 1 2019 sports have been finalised. Some students did not select and have been allocated a sport. Hopefully you were

consulted before selection took place. If you have been away on holidays for a few weeks, please check the school web-

site for the list and ask your child to email the 6 different activities to Mr Steven Burns, who will take over the Sport Coor-

dinator’s position as a result of my retirement. I wish him every success and know that he will do a marvellous job.

A very sincere thank you to parents, carers and students for your support over the many years of my service and for the

personal connections I have been able to make. It has been an exciting journey to see the students participate in Friday

sports, Diocesan championships and NSW Combined Catholic Colleges events. My wish is for all students to enjoy their

sports and to play with sportsmanship.

I wish our San Clemente community a very Happy Christmas and fantastic New Year!
