PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

What a wonderful demonstrator BrendaSwenson is! We learned so much as she creat-ed her watercolor grapes using negative paint-

ing techniques. Thank you again, Brenda! Her work-shop is October 13 & 14 and since there is noProduct and Learning Expo in Pasadena this year, why not spend your money learning more fromBrenda? Tell your friends.

In October our monthly demonstrator is JoeMilazzo, showing us his charcoal skills. See the arti-cle about him on page 1.

Our first meeting of the year was a great successdue to everyone’s participation in making the meet-ing happen. Thank you to those who helped set up and take down the tables andchairs, helped in the kitchen, and supported our scholarship fund.

Two years ago I reported on the 50-foot Millard Sheets mural being takendown from the Home Savings building in Pasadena for restoration. This summerit will have a permanent place at the Pasadena City College Gymnasium lobby. Themural depicts the first Rose Parade and was painted in 1963. The muralist’s son,Tony Sheets, says, “It’s been restored, and it looks fantastic.” Tony runs the non-profit Millard Sheets Center for the Arts at the Pomona Fairplex. Every year I enjoyseeing who is demonstrating and whose paintings are displayed (Brenda Swenson, and Tom Fong were at the center demonstrating on Sept. 19).

Some of our members were selling their paintings at the Montrose Art Walkon Sept. 15. It was good to see their artwork in a different setting. Plan on bring-ing your paintings to our monthly Artist of the Month contest at our meeting onOctober 5 and entering your art work in the Fall Show on November 3 at the LaCanada Library.

Special thanks must go to Karen Carter for volunteering to be our First VicePresident, and to Frank De Lucia for taking on the post of Publicity Chair.

See you at the October meeting.

VHAA NEWSYou can make a difference

VHAA is looking for volunteers to setstandards for a new Logo and Banner tobe used for the current website,www.VerdugoArts.com, our newsletter, and all advertising and stationary.

Frank de Lucia is asking for volun-teers to help set criteria and standardsfor a new branding of Verdugo Hills ArtAssociation, as the current look doesn’thave the vibrancy needed for the weband doesn’t reflect the purpose of theassociation.

Your time involvement will be mini-mal but the purpose will be important as itis VHAA’s brand and identity for the future.

We do so many things for our mem-bers by having an environment whereartists of all mediums can meet, learn newtechniques as well as basics in art andcompete in juried and non-juried shows.

Our association represents fineartists and instructors, as well as begin-ners, in many mediums not just oil andwatercolor. We want to again representsculpture, photography, and digital arts.

If you have a couple of hours youcan spare and want to be part of theteam that sets the requirements for agroup wide competition, please callFrank de Lucia as soon as possible:818-399-3904 or email:[email protected].

Once this group has established theguidelines, the fun will begin with agroup competition to create our keyidentifications and brand: logo, websitebanner, newsletter banner, etc. Frankpromises this will be fun and you do nothave to have graphics experience, although it will be welcome.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Although we have this on the front page and havegiven you other notifications, it’s important thatyou note changes for our meeting dates for this

month and subsequent months. We will be meeting onthe SECOND Friday of each month instead of the firstFriday. The reason for the change is that in a manage-ment changeover at the La Cañada Com munity Center, the hall got double-booked for three months. Theboard decided that the Center is a good location forour meetings and, rather than bouncing back andforth between the first and second Friday, we wouldshift our meetings to the second Friday, instead. So,please mark your calendars and we look forward toseeing our November demonstrator, Rick Rotante.

Your board is wrestling with how to make the demonstrators’ work visible toeveryone in the audience. The most logical way seems to be to have a video cameraconnected with a projector that can show the images onto the big screen at the stage.Unfortunately, these devices cost several hundred dollars and our treasury cannotafford that. If you know someone who would donate either or both and receive a taxdeduction, please let me know. A one-time assessment (perhaps $10 per member)might be another solution. Let me know your thoughts. We would also need some-one to transport the items to and from the meeting, set them up and run them.

Last month’s demonstrator, Joe Milazzo, was terrific. He brought at least 20 ofhis charcoal and pen and ink drawings, with such detail it was hard to imagine theywere not photographs. To me, they were very exciting. Then I had the fun of goingto a couple art receptions. At the Lanterman House our member Karen Horn wasselling her paintings. At White’s Gallery, the Glendale Art Association reception hadover 100 people in attendance. Additionally I went to the Pasadena Museum ofCalifornia Art to see the Edgar Payne exhibit (see page 4 for my review).

You may still have time to catch Izabella T. Wardas’ show at the La CañadaFlintridge Library, which runs until October 30. VHAA members Julie Crouch, TomFong and Jeanne Windoffer have paintings entered in the 44th Annual WatercolorWest Juried Exhibition running through Dec. 16 at the Brea Gallery (see page 4). The La Quinta Arts Foundation east of Palm Springs is open only nine Saturdays,October 27 through March 23, 2013. It’s an outdoor exhibit filled with fine art, crafts, food and entertainment. Go to www.LQAF.com for more information.

FYI: Brenda Swenson will be the judge for our November Fall show (see page3). I’m going to enter — I hope you do, too.

“Negative Painting” was the focuswith Brenda demonstrating her tech-niques for designing and glazing, usingonly Paynes Gray (black) on Saturdayand only three colors on Sunday.

We were shown many tips for puttingon up to five glazed layers and “finding”new shapes to delight the eye. It was fas-cinating to watch her examples.

Then we tried to do it heeding heradmonition: “Today only think in nega-tive spaces.” She suggested using a cru-ciform design and watching the sheen ofthe wet paper; the art of glazing kepteveryone working hard. It was not easyto see only the negative spaces.

The second day we repeated thisprocess but in color. The colors wereone yellow, one red, and one blue.Picking a triad of our own colors andtesting different combinations was a les-son in itself. We drew the subject andfollowed the same format as Saturday —this time with color. Very exciting!

Those of you who have taken work-shops and watched demonstrations fromBrenda know that she is very organized. She brought laminated photos of exam-ples to paint, and she had step-by-stepexamples on the wall of negative paintingin color.

Brenda also gave a valuable lessonon the properties of paint. Pigment let-ters and numbers are found on all tubesof paint, whether transparent or opaque, granulating and non-granulating. We alsomade color charts of our own paintpalettes to find which ones of our paintswere transparent or opaque.

Edgar Payne:An Artistic JourneyBy Nikki Thomas

I hope you got a chance to see theEdgar Payne exhibit at the PasadenaMuseum of California Art this October.Edgar Payne is considered one of themost gifted and beloved artists ofCalifornia’s early plein-air painters. Hisoils show how lights and darks can bepainted outdoors and not loose thebeauty of the original scenery.

After visiting California for manyyears, Payne moved from Chicago toGlendale in 1917. He is best known forhis paintings of the Sierra NevadaMountain range. After seeing his work, many artists started to copy Edgar’svibrant colors of the Impressionist styleand reject their drab, dark colors.

The Southern Pacific Railroad andAtchison, Topeka & Santa Fe RR commis-sioned painters to advertise the South -west in their paintings as they traveled bytrain from Chicago to Canyon de Chelly,Arizona. Any artist could ride the railsand sleep in hotels in exchange for thesepaintings and Payne was one of thosewho took advantage of the offer.

Said Payne “If we expect to do finepaintings, we must think, study and havea strong determination to overcome diffi-culties. The study of art is a lifetimematter.”n The 44th Annual Watercolor WestJuried Exhibition is running through

Two win Artist of the Month awards in October

There was a beautiful collection of entries for Artist of the Month at last month's meeting. Peopleseemed to take a long and careful look before deciding, as each painting was so striking.

When all was said and done, there was a clear choice for first place, which went to AprilDrew Foster for her lovely Watercolor portrayal of the "L.A. River", which was painted on loca-tion. Second place was awarded to Magi Watson for her wonderful Oil painting titled "Playingwith Turtles".

We all look forward each month to seeing the paintings brought for review, so don't for-get to bring one of yours to the next meeting! All entries — no matter the level of your skillor the choice of your medium — are welcome. Remember it isn't about winning - it's aboutthe love of Art.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

What a joy it was to watch Rick Rotante demon-strate by painting his self-portrait last month. Heexplained everything as he went along. The

main points of his demonstration were: • Don’t paint things • Paint the light, not the object • Forget what you know • Paint your own work • Take as long as it takes • Use a limited pallet • Don’t paint everything • Work every day • Think before you show it • Be noble • Show only your best work • And best of all — HAVE FUN! Thank you, Rick!

Have you heard of “Wine & Canvas?” Paseo Colorado (260 E. Colorado) has aplace for corporate functions, graduation events, birthday parties etc. to have paint-ing parties. The cost is $35 per person, food not included. There are different teach-ers with different media. It lasts between 2 1/2 to 3 hours. The Pasadena studio canaccommodate up to 70 people. According to the Pasadena Star-News, a schedule isposted each month on the Wine & Canvas website www.wineandcanvas.com. It'ssomething you can check out.

The Norton Simon Museum is borrowing from the National Gallery of Art inWashington, D.C. a Van Gogh self portrait to be on display from December 7 toMarch 4.

The Board wishes everyone a wonderful and safe holiday season.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

By now your holidays have come and gone. Wedid not fall off the edge of the world on Dec 21,so this must be a new beginning for the world

with more peace and understanding than we had in2012.

How about Gerald Brommer! I just couldn’tbelieve how quiet it was during the meeting; every-one was listening to his every word. Congratulationsto our winners for the artists of the month, Devorahand Susan. Don’t forget to bring your paintings sothat we can have three winners, not just two.

A quote in the Pasadema Star News said, “He’shere.” Carol Togneri, curator of the Norton SimonMuseum, was talking about the arrival of the Vincent van Gogh painting, nowhanging in the museum. Created in 1889, just months before his death at age 37,the painting is described as “bursting and electric with color.” It will be returningto the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. in early March.

VHAA needs two knowledgeable people who would to willing to run a project-ing camera for our artists’ demonstrations. We are looking into purchasing acomplete camera system to improve our demonstrations by making it easier foreveryone to see in the large room. Do you know how to do this, or know some-one who would be willing to learn? You would need to attend the VHAA meetingson a regular basis, and be willing to setup and transport the equipment.Additionally if any of you have a connection with an equipment provider whocould give us a good price, please contact Nikki at 323) 257-3817.

May this New Year 2013, be exciting with hope, love and joy.

Two win Artist of the Month awards in December

ºDecember’s meeting was such a treat with Gerald Brommer and his collage demonstration. It was so inspiring — and maybe it will challenge you to try your hand at it for the JanuaryArtist of the Month entries! We had a smaller group of participants last month, but that wasprobably due to the Holidays. As a result, we only gave two awards. Our first place winnerthis month was Devorah Friedman with her beautiful portrait of “Zachary”. Our second placeaward went to Susan Chesney for her whimsical rendition of “Beauty Parlor Angels.” Bothpieces were watercolor. In fact, this time all of the entries were watercolor. Where are allof our Oil Painters, Pastelists, Pencil Artists and Photographers?? We love to see it all!

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Iam looking forward to seeing Karl Dempwolf asour demonstrator at the Feb. 8 meeting and at hisall-day workshop on Feb. 23. He paints in oil so

all of you oil/acrylic painters make sure you come.Karl feels that he wants to teach himself and ussomething new, so that we all experience his newchallenge. Wait and see.

Shirley Manning was so delightful as our Januarydemonstrator. Have you tried to paint on cardboard? She does.

There is an article on page 5 of this newsletterfrom Joan Whitmore about her ibook for children. She first painted a child for each page, came up witha travel story, added a voice to the book and got it published. We are proud of youraccomplishments, Joan. I have sent books to my great-grandchildren.

There is also an article on page 3 from long-time member Caddis Robinette,a humorous take on how we all feel as we get older. If there is anyone else whohas a story to tell, please submit the story to Sue Peacock, our newsletter editor.

As you can see from Frank de Lucia’s article on the back page, we’re begin-ning a contest for a new VHAA logo. One benefit is that the club can use the logoon aprons, hats, shirts and other things that will help market our club and bemoney makers. Our very own Linda Tindell has the machines to make these itemsand she is willing to put in her time to help support our club.

Do you know that the Pasadena Museum of California Art has two free dayseach month? The first Friday, 12-5, is free and the 3rd Thursday is free from 5-8pm.

On May 26th, the Lanterman House in La Canada is celebrating Memorial Dayand we have been given the parking lot to show and sell our art work. We willneed to bring our own tables and they will provide chairs. Please set the day asideand there will be more information closer to the date.

Our small image show is coming up April 1-30, so start painting small. Detailsare on page 3 of this newsletter. Speaking of small images, do you have a smallpainting that you would like to give your Valentine? As a bonus, you could take itback and put it into the show, and then return it when the show is over. TheVerdugo Hills Sweet Adeline Chorus sells singing valentines. The $40 fee includeshaving a quartet go to your special person’s home or work place to sing a lovesong, give a personalized card and a surprise gift. The quartet would be delightedto present your painting to your loved one, too. Contact Sue Peacock, our ownSweet Adeline.

One of my BFFs and I drove over to Cal Poly in Pomona to see the Mid-ValleyArts League show. Four of our members won awards. Betty Glass won fourth placeaward for abstract and three of our members won Honorable Mentions inAbstract, Portrait and Genre: Sandra Rooney, Devorah Friedman and Julie Crouch.Congratulations to all of the award winners. Gerald Brommer was the award-win-ning juror, so these paintings were very special.

If you have made any changes to your email, phone number, or address in thepast year, please send that information to me at: [email protected] or callme at 323/257-3817. We will be printing the new directory very soon.

Now that I’m an old woman, I shalluse a walking stick, which I shall refuseto call a cane — just to steady me, youunderstand.

Since legs are the last to go, I’ll wearknee-high boots, with heels and flirtyskirts that just skim the knees, V-neckedblouses and sweaters with a little cleav-age, just enough to keep memories alive.

I’m still the Me I used to be, al -though my mileage has climbed. I’m atthe awkward age, too old for a youngman and too young for an old man. I stillappreciate a naughty joke, sexy movies,“abs” to die for, filet mignon and a vin-tage wine.

The Sinatra classic with the words,“when I was 17, it was a very good year”still melts my soul.

Now that I am old, eccentric is notmy goal, but rather to be just me, onlyan older model.

My upholstery may be a bit worn, myheadlights a bit dimmer, my tires a littlesmooth and my horn a bit weaker. I’velost that new car smell, but I am stillproud — proud that after 90 years I livealone, still drive a stick and don’t dawdleand, oh yes, I still get a joke.

Thank you Lord,P S. And lastly, I still know my name.

As an outlet for my artwork, I decid-ed to write, illustrate and publish aninteractive book for iPad.

The program I used was iBooksAuthor, a free application from Apple. The program includes templates you canuse to make your own book.

I first created the artwork and thenscanned it into my computer. I then putthe pictures and text into the iBooks

template. Next I downloaded an inexpen-sive program, iRecorder, to add narra-tion and music. I also downloaded royal-ty-free music from Amazon. You alsoneed to get an ISBN number (availablefrom http://browker.com).

The last step is to publish the bookusing iTunes Producer. Once published,Apple sells your book for a percentage ofthe price and sends the balance to yourchosen bank account. Apple also hassuggestions for marketing.

I have two more books ready forpublication. One is narrated and musicallike the first book I published. With thesecond book, I used links to the internet. There are many interactive tools you canuse to bring your book to life. My firstbook, Around the Alphabet World withWilly and All his Friends can be down-loaded once the free ibooks applicationis put on your iPad.

I have found that publishing for iPadalone is too limited a distribution so Iplan to publish these books on Amazon,as well. Unfortunately, iBooks Author’s

interactive options are not available forpublication on non-apple devices. Sonow, there will be a new learning curvefor me!

Linda Tindell: Painting in the "Painted Desert"About two hours south of Los

Angeles is a fantastically beautiful part ofCalifornia called the Anza BorregoDesert. In the 50's Disney made a docu-mentary film about it in the height of thedesert blooming season called the“Painted Desert" and I think the termhas sort of stuck, as many of us nowknow it by that name.

During the height of bloom — lateFebruary to mid-March — it becomes amagical place full of wildflowers andblooming cactus. How much of a bloomdepends on how much rain it gets, asdoes one of my favorite places in Palm -dale, the California Poppy Reserve. Butthe Painted Desert is always beautiful nomatter what time ofyear.

Snuggled in themiddle of this desertis the historical towncalled BorregoSprings. This tiny little town has moreArt and Art Eventsthan most towns 100times its size.

In November of2012, I visited anevent hosted by theBorrego Valley Innthat featured a four-day Plein Air competition and galleryshowing. Even though it was Novemberinstead of the height of the flowering sea-son, the little desert town surrounded byspectacular hills was alive with splendorfrom its glorious sunrise, amazing lateafternoon light, to its beautiful sunsetsand a spectacular night-time view of ourgalaxy. If you have ever wanted a fabu-lous little get-away just to relax andpaint, this is it!

Also in Borrego Springs is a famouscollection of 28 life-size bronze andmetal sculptures scattered across thearea on a trail accessible by car.

These metal giants are truly amazingto see (and paint) in the wide opendesert. They were given to the little townby one of its philanthropists, DennisAvery of the Avery Label Estate, who com-missioned them from Ricardo Breceda tobe sculpted for the town.

Included are sculptures ofdinosaurs, woolly mammoths, sabertooth cats, sloths, and even imaginaryserpents from pre-historic times. Theymake an impressive scene, and are funto paint. How in the world they got them

to their final resting place and installedis beyond me!

So if you are looking for a fun localtrip for a weekend get-away, lateFebruary to Mid-March is almost here.Come to paint with your friends in the"Painted Desert.” In addition, SaimCaglayan (with whom I worked) is host-ing an oil painting workshop in BorregoSprings March 23-25 (Info: www.saim-caglayan.com) All levels are welcomed.

While in Yosemite one year, ateacher asked what the class wanted tocapture in their images; Lizz’s answer isthat a work should capture the essenceof what is before our eyes. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Today as I'm writing this, it is Valentines Day and Iam thinking of my friends and family and how artis just as rewarding as our relationships. There is

frustration, joy, surprise and happiness with a suc-cessful creation. We are creating every day, not onlyin our art but in our meal planning, activities andrelationships. I treasure my loves in my life.

Our February demonstrator, Karl Dempwolf, wasvery articulate and he doesn’t stress about the detailsbut paints shapes. Try it; you might like it.

At our next meeting, March 8, everyone will bevoting on our new logo design. Bring your design on8 1/2” by 11” board so that everyone will be able tosee it as we vote. See the article on the last page for more information. After wehave the logo, we are going to purchase a banner to hang for our art shows, ourmeetings and at sales such as the one at Lanterman House so everyone will knowwho we are. We also plan to sell aprons, hats, tote bags, etc with our logo.

By the way: Don’t forget the Lanterman House art sale on May 26th. Get yourpaintings ready. See Kimberly-Ann’s article on page 3 for more information.

Our next association meeting will have Lizz Tucker demonstrating with char-coal and white pastel (see the front page for details). She wants everyone to bringa tablet as backing to support your drawing, and your charcoal pencils and whitepastel. She will be selling supplies if you want to draw and didn’t bring anything.

There has been a change in both the take-in location and date of the small-image show coming up. Bring your paintings to Citibank on March 23rd.

Coming up in April will be your chance to support your club by volunteeringto be a member of the board. It’s a great way to know other members of our club. Please think about how your skills can be best used and what you enjoy doing, andsay yes when the nominating committee asks you to serve.

Lastly, I'd like to give a huge thank you to Kristina Arias who has mailed ourclub’s newsletters every month for the last several years, and to say welcome toJoyce Peterson for taking over this job. A special thank you also needs to goto Kimberly-Ann Talbert for creating and presenting the People's Choice Awardfor our January non-juried show winners.

The workshop was very good. DescansoGardens was beautiful as always and theCamelia Show was going on, as well. KarlDempwolf is a lovely man. He's got a lotof energy, a great and positive personalityand is so eager to help everyone. Therewere 12 of us, so it was a bit difficult for

him to give each one as much attention aswe would have loved. However, he man-aged not to leave anyone out. We did twopainting sessions at different locations.

I am a watercolor artist so, needless tosay, working in oil was a challenge for mebut one that I would definitely do again.

Iam reading Portrait of An Artist, abiography of Georgia O’Keeffe byLaurie Lisle, and as I do so, I'm also

looking at the paintings in my book,Georgia O’Keeffeand New Mexico, ASense of Place, thatI bought at GhostRanch in Abiquiu,New Mexico. Thebiography describeshow she filled herseries of paintingswith well-thoughtout subjects full ofemotions.

Her spartan liv-ing helped her to focus only on painting, and nothing else. She determined earlyin life that she wanted to be a painterand nothing deterred her including hermarriage to famed photographer AlfredSteiglitz. After his death she moved to NMand supervised the restoration of GhostRanch by her friend, Maria Chabot. Fouryears later she moved in.

I find her dedication to paintingwhile ignoring personal relationshipsstrange, as did many other people. If shedidn’t need you she didn’t call you. Shedid what she wanted to do whether ithurt other people or not. But this self-determined person was able to paint herchoice of subject matter and be emotion-ally involved with every one of her cre-ations.

One line in her biography says “Shepainted out of compassion for the sky,the moon, the sunlight, the hills, thedesert – and the many small flowers, stones, and bones she found” during hermany walks. Georgia O’Keeffe never feltthat any of her paintings represented any“sexual” agenda, although that was howher paintings were often perceived.

My husband and I visited GhostRanch and drove by Georgia's house. Wesaw the dead cedar that still stands asshe painted it in her piece called “CedarTree with Lavender Hills.” Additionallywe saw “her” mountain and many views

that she painted. A Sense of Place is a traveler's joy

because it shows photos of the locationthat she painted and on the followingpage, her painting. In contrast to the

drab black &grays shewore, Georgiawas famousfor the brightcolors sheused in herart.

If youcan’t get toNew Mexico, you can do thenext best thing

by reading her biography to get to knowthe soul of Georgia O’Keeffe. Her muse-um is located in Santa Fe and her origi-nal paintings are wonderful to see. GhostRanch is available for tours.

Ronald Reagan awarded GeorgiaO'Keeffe the National Medal of Arts. A lit-tle less than a year later, on March 6,1986, Georgia O'Keeffe died in Santa Feat the ripe old age of 98.

The brilliance of her art work hasproven timeless as it continues tointrigue and inspire people. It was unfor-tunate that by the time of this award,Georgia was losing her eyesight andcould not paint unassisted. Ultimately shewas totally blind and was forced to movein with her assistant in Santa Fe, NewMexico.

Georgia O’Keefe: Unique American artist

Georgia O’Keefe painted “Cedar Trees With Lavender Hills” in 1937, using natural settings atGhost Ranch in Abiquiu, New Mexico.

Georgia O’Keeffe never feltthat any of her paintingsrepresented any “sexual”agenda, although that washow her paintings were

often perceived.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Every month I am so grateful that our meetings runsmoothly and the people behind the scenes knowwhat they are doing. Our current board members

are fantastic but some need a rest and have decidednot to volunteer for next year. My two-year term willbe over in June of this year.

Election of new officers will be coming up verysoon. The first step is to have a nominating commit-tee. This committee will meet once or twice to comeup with a new slate of officers for the members tovote on. Please volunteer to be on the committee. Inaddition, our club cannot run without officers, sovolunteer for a position on the board.

As well as President, positions available are: First Vice President in charge ofour monthly programs; Corresponding Secretary; Membership Chairman;Newsletter Editor; Publicity Chairman, and one of the Co-Chairs of Hospitality. Ifyou are interested in filling any of these positions, please contact me until we geta Nomination Committee Chair.

From our by-laws, I will touch on a few of the job descriptions. • The President is in charge of the regular meetings and board meetings andkeeps the club running smoothly. • The First Vice President/Program Chairman obtains demonstrators/speakers forour monthly meetings and provides information and pictures to the PublicityChair, Newsletter Editor, and Webmaster for publication. There are people in ourclub who have lists of many artists who can be contacted for our demonstrations.• The Membership Chair collects dues from current and new members, stands atthe door and welcomes visitors, and keeps a current record of all members. • The Newsletter Editor collects all of the articles, proofreads them and rewritesthem if necessary, and sends everything to a designer, unless the Editor is quali-fied to do the designing as well. • The Hospitality Co-Chairs handle all of the refreshments at our meetings.

I want to personally thank the Logo Committee headed by Frank de Lucia andeveryone who submitted their logo art work. We had about 50 entries from all dif-ferent styles. Jennifer Swain won the contest; congratulations Jennifer and thankyou to everyone. See the new logo on the front page of our newsletter Next, we maywant to have a contest to name our newsletter.

You won’t want to miss our next meeting! Jesús Cruz, Jr. will be demonstrat-ing in a medium that very few of us have ever considered using: linoleum blockprinting. It promises to be a fascinating evening. Plus, don’t forget to bring yourbest work to enter in our “Artist of the Month” contest. See the back cover forsome important information about our “Artist of the Year” competition, which willtake place this year in May, not June.

How to set up a watercolor paletteBY BRENDA SWENSON

Very little information is available on how to set up a watercolor palette ... so I figuredI’d share my technique. The palette I am showing is a Heritage Folding Palette with 18wells. It is one of the nicest travel palettes I have seen in a while and a great price. The lidhas a soft plastic seal, which keeps the palette from leaking and keeps your colors fromdrying out quickly. It comes with a removable clear plastic tray. I don’t use the tray sincethe palette has an ample mixing area. (1) Before I use a palette I give it a light scrubbing with a mild abrasive such as soft scrub. This takes the slick surface off the mixing area and removes any residues from the manu-facturing. Be sure to thoroughly rinse off the palette; you don’t want this in your paint.

(2) I fill the 18 wells with my favorite selection of paint. Don’t put tiny dabs of paint in the wells — fill the wells! Tiny dabs ofpaint will eventually just fall out. Hold the tube over the deep end of the well then come back towards the shallow end whilesqueezing the tube.

(3) Let the palette sit open for a day or two. When the paint has set up and is no longer sticky I wet my thumb and pushdown in the center of each well. What this does is create an indentation for the water. When I get ready to paint I lightly mistthe paint wells and I am ready to go.

Congratulations to all the winners inthe 2013 Small Image Show!

DATED MATERIALPLEASE PROCESS IMMEDIATELY

This month we had such a wonderful group of 10 paintings. Thanks so much to each and everyone for bringing them on what threatened to bea rainy night. Our First Place Award went to Marilyn Pepper (L) for her outstanding watercolor portrait, “Mr. Donahue.” Second Place was award-ed to Judie Apablaza (C) for her watercolor, “Prague Morning.” Third Place went to Peterfield Turpin for his beautiful oil “Matador Beach-Malibu.”

Linda Tindell, Chairman, Artist of the Month

“Artist of the Month” competitionswill continue to be conducted at theApril and May general meetings. However in May there will be a BIGCHANGE.

At our May meeting we will alsoselect the ARTIST OF THE YEAR. All pre-vious first place winners for “Artist of theMonth” need to bring in their winning

work to the MAY meeting (not JUNE). There will be two tables set up:

• “Artist of the Month of May” will comefirst with the pictures facing the group asyou enter. People will vote for thatthrough intermission.• The winner of that will be moved tothe table with the “Artist of the Year”works, hidden until then, and a new vote

will be held for “Artist of the Year.” Why all this confusion? The La

Cañada Library has a special anniveraryevent planned in the exhibit room for theday we would normally be hanging the“Artist of the Year” exhibit. Therefore, the “Artist of the Year” exhibit will nowgo on display on June 8-30. More aboutthis next month.

Major change for Arist of the Year competition, now set for May meeting

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

What a wonderful demonstration we had at ourApril meeting! Jesus Cruz Jr. told us about hisfamily history, how he got started and he

brought so many of his linoleum cuts and evenallowed us to make our own prints. See Susan’s arti-cle on page 3.

Our logo is fabulous. Congratulations to JenniferSwain, Pepe Apablaza, and Frank de Lucia for creat-ing our new image.

I have been looking at other clubs' newslettersand they are informing their members about thePasadena Museum of California Art that is free the 3rd Thursday of every month. From now until July 28 will be the “California Scene Paintings from 1930 to1960;” the collection “traces the state’s physical, social and cultural evolution —from the Great Depression and World War II to the dramatic demolish-and-buildpost-War era — through more than 75 oil and watercolor paintings, plus prints

and drawings,” says Lynne Heffley. Brenda Swenson is having a collage and

sketching workshop on May 17-19 at the CitibankBuilding in Montrose. Go [email protected] for more information.Price is $275.00 for 3 days.

The Renaissance Pleasure Faire is being heldat the Santa Fe Dam until May 19. Mid Valley ArtsLeague (MVAL) hosted four days of Plein-Air paint-out at the Faire to raise money for their club. Everypainter donated a painting to the Faire for an ArtAuction May 11 and 12.

The Brand Library renovation is still goingstrong. The completion date is early 2014. A surprise was revealed under the man-sion ceiling: original hand painted ceilings covered over with plaster.

The Ruth and Charles Gilb Arcadia Historical Museum, 380 W Huntington, inArcadia is showing senior painters until August 2013. Tues — Sat 10-4.

Debi Swan McDonald, our May demonstrator, has a show at the Heritage ArtGallery in the Boddy House at Descanso Gardens, through August from 9-5 daily.

Art and gardens go together like Van Gogh and sunflowers. If DescansoGardens has inspired your own art endeavors, why not share your vision? TheStuart Haaga Gallery is seeking artwork to present in “Portraits of the Gardens,”its first juried and invitational exhibition which opens in January 2014.

The exhibition will feature diverse, cutting edge artwork in many mediawhich are linked by the theme of the garden. Details are available at CaFE, an artwebsite. Only online proposals will be accepted. The deadline to submit a pro-posal is Oct. 13, 2013. Descanso members can receive a 75 percent discount onthe $60 submission fee.

Downtown Los Angeles would like painters to paint El Pueblo in Olvera Street, around the plaza, shops, people, church and more to promote our Los Angelesheritage and to be able to sell paintings. Paintings for sale need to have a “sug-gested donation” price. Contact [email protected].

APRIL MEETING REPORTWe were fortunate to enjoy print-

maker Jesús Cruz Jr.’s amazing and gutsyprintmaking style at our April meeting.Jesus brought many prints, cards, and t-shirts, all emblazoned with his black-and-white images of flowers.

He also showed off “Day of theDead” style skeletons riding on motorcy-cles, playing musical instruments andhaving all kinds of fun!

Jesús also brought many flat piecesof linoleum with his original carvings inthem so that we could learn about hiscreative process. He draws on thelinoleum, carves out the negative spaceswith knives, and then colors the positivespaces with a magic marker as he goes,so that he can clearly see the progress ofhis drawing. His linoleum blocks wereintricate and beautiful.

Jesús also told us about how hemarkets his art. He has had a booth atthe L. A. County Fair and is about to haveanother booth at the California State Fair. When he was at the L.A. County Fair, aman from Andover Fabrics in New YorkCity saw Jesus’ work and picked up hisbrochure. A month later, a woman fromAndover called Jesús and asked him ifthey could market his designs. Theywanted to print his work on fabric forquilting stores. Of course, Jesús wasthrilled to sell his work, and now he iscreating many images for Andoverincluding Christmas designs, again withmany skulls, skeletons and flowers.

Jesús’ wife is his manager, and shehelps him make many financial decisionsso that he can focus on producing his

art. What a great team they are and aninspiration to all of us at Verdugo HillsArt Association.

Winners in April’s Artist of the Month contest were: First place: David Crandon “Autumn Surprise;” Second place: Jeanne Windoffer “SunsetShimmer;” Third place: Kimberly Ann Talbert “Campana y Palmas de San Gabriel.”

— Linda Tindell, Artist of the Month Chairman

The May meeting will have an “Artistof the Month” competition as usual. However in May we will also select theARTIST OF THE YEAR. All previous firstplace winners for “Artist of the Month”need to bring in their winning work tothe MAY meeting (not JUNE).

There will be two tables set up: • “Artist of the Month of May” will comefirst with the pictures facing the group asyou enter. Please bring your entries by6:45 p.m. and we will vote on this seg-ment before Deborah McDonald’sdemonstration.

• The winner of that contest will bemoved to the table with the “Artist of theYear” works, hidden until then, and a newvote will be held for “Artist of the Year.”

Why all this confusion? The LaCañada Library has a special anniveraryevent planned in the exhibit room for theday we would normally be hanging the“Artist of the Year” exhibit. Therefore, the “Artist of the Year” exhibit will nowgo on display on June 8-30.

asked me if I was interested in illustrat-ing it. I was free to do whatever I wantedfrom technique, the number of drawings,to the placement in the story. This hap-pened about 25 years ago and after allthat time the results have been pub-lished.

It is interesting to look back on itnow since the actual work took place solong ago. In my professional career Ioften run into work that I have done forarchitectural projects in places that Iwould never expect. This is anotherunexpected and pleasant surprise.
