Transformation of a Landmark

Our meeting room at Verandas was transformed on October 16 – by posters, hats with Roundhouse Aquarium on them and brochures. Our speaker, Michael Greenberg, CEO of Skechers and head of the Roundhouse Aquarium Beautification Project, was prepared, not only to describe this extensive project, but also to leave us some things to take home to inspire our interest – and our support. But first, Dan Jensen led the salute to the flag followed by Jim Lambert’s short but very sweet thought of the day: “Having a kind heart in a cruel world is courage, not weakness.” Busy Rotarians It’s been a busy time for Manhattan Beach Rotarians, and President Mark Burton had many to recognize: Don Jung for completing all 40 Hometown Fair 10K races; Loli Ramezani for organizing two Career Days; and Cedric Tuck-Sherman for heading our staffing of the Hometown Fair Wine Garden. ************************************************************************************** stage to thank those who supported the family and co-workers of Rachael Parker. Tim hired Rachael, the Manhattan Beach Police Department staff member who was among those tragically killed in Las Vegas. On a happier note, he reported that our Rotaract and Interact groups raised over $1,000 at their Hometown Fair booth, and he thanked those who helped. The Future of the Roundhouse Aquarium Introduced by President Mark, Michael Greenberg, gave us a video introduction to Skechers, the worldwide shoe and now apparel company that is headquartered in Manhattan Beach. “The best thing that happened to me was when LA Gear fired me,” Greenberg joked, describing how Skechers grew from its beach house start with a staff of 20, to its current 160,000 square feet of office space in Manhattan Beach alone. Skechers is well known for its community presence in Manhattan Beach, from its support of Friendship Circle through the Pier to Pier Friendship Walk and sponsorship of numerous community events, like our beloved Pumpkin Races and holiday fireworks. Now, Greenberg has set his sights on what President Mark called “the most important project in the city’s history,” the beautification of the Roundhouse Aquarium. This project was initiated by the Harrison Greenberg Foundation, named in honor of Greenberg’s son Harrison, who loved the aquarium as he did all things connected with the beach and ocean. Harrison passed away at the age of 19 in Thailand, but the aquarium, “one of his favorite places,” will be transformed by this project, which was started by a $1.25 million grant from Greenberg. Greenberg led us through the plans for the Roundhouse, which will keep the iconic exterior but transform the interior dramatically to a state-of-the art aquarium. It will continue to be free – an attraction for visitors and a teaching facility for school children. The $3.5 million renovation, with additional funds needed for an endowment, was designed in partnership with the Oceanic Teaching Stations (OTS) and the city of Manhattan Beach and has won the approval of the Coastal Commission. And, said President Mark, he wants funds from Celebrate Manhattan Beach to go toward this project. Those of us who’ve taken our children – and maybe even our grandchildren – to classes at the Roundhouse Aquarium, have a deep affection for this institution. But we also know that the few dollars we drop in each time we visit is inadequate to support this local treasure. Fortunately the Harrison Greenberg Foundation has stepped up and has asked others to follow. Yours in Rotary Sue Vogl
