Sinc e 2004, Vasc ula ta summer c ourse have been hosted annua lly by ac ademic institutions in va rious pa rts of the USA. Vasc ula ta is a North Americ an Vasc ula r Biology Organiza tion (NAVBO)-sponsored event tha t unanimously c hose Med ic a l College of Wisc onsin (MCW) in Milwaukee, WI, as the host of the 2019 Vasc ula ta c onferenc e. This three-and-one-ha lf-day educ a tiona l c onferenc e introduc es the basic s of vasc ula r b iology (heart, lung, b lood and sleep) and its role in d isease, thus p rovid ing a ttendees with a unique lea rning experienc e in a d isc ip line not c omprehensively c overed in textbooks or even by c ourses in most universities.

The meeting a t MCW will showc ase the loc a l ac ademic environment, espec ia lly vasc ula r b iology and hematology-minded researc hers to the sc ientific c ommunity. Southeastern Wisc onsin-based institutions suc h as The Child ren?s Hosp ita l of Wisc onsin (CHW), Blood Researc h Institute (BRI) and Centers (MCW Card iovasc ula r Center (CVC), Clinic a l Transla tiona l and Sc ienc e Institute (CTSI) will jo intly host this meeting on the MCW c ampus. MCW is a one-of-its-kind ac ademic med ic a l c enter with a ric h history of c a rd iovasc ula r and b lood researc h. Emphasis a t the MCW Vasc ula ta 2019 c onferenc e is on short seminars c overing a defined c urric ulum, with inc reased foc us on app lying knowledge ga ined from basic vasc ula r b iology mec hanisms to d iseases assoc ia ted with the vasc ula ture. Seminars a re followed by hands-on workshops on tec hnolog ies emerg ing in the field and skills assoc ia ted with c a reer enhanc ement. This year, NAVBO in c ollabora tion with MCW will introduc e a new ?mentoring-engagement p lan,? a t Vasc ula ta 2019. This long-term mentoring p lan for pa rtic ipants is designed to engage tra inees and ma inta in mentoring rela tionships long a fter the c onferenc e has c onc luded . The goa l of this p rogram is to inc rease tra inee suc c ess and retention ra tes in heart, lung, b lood and sleep researc h. The c onferenc e a t MCW is supported by CHW, MCW, CVC, CTSI, NAVBO, c orpora te sponsors and a generous R13 grant from NHLBI, NIH.

We welc ome a ll of you to Southeastern Wisc onsin and enc ourage you to engage with vasc ula r b iology researc hers, and to make an impac t on the next genera tion of vasc ula r b iolog ists. Enjoy your time in our vib rant c ity!
