Always select the correct saw blade for thematerial being cut. The resulting cut will becleaner and more accurate, and there willbe less stress on the machine. This JigSaw can be used to cut wood, metal orplastics depending upon the type of bladeselected. The blades used must be of theBosch® style mount. Grizzly offers a varietyof blade styles in the current catalog.

A few points to remember in making yourblade selection:

1. The overall blade length will affectthe thickness of material whichcan be cut. Most jig saw bladesrange in length from 3" to 5".

2. The width of the blade (measuredfrom the tip of one of the teeth tothe back edge) affects how tight ofa curve can be cut. A 3⁄16" wideblade will cut a tighter circle than a3⁄8" wide one.

BLADE SELECTION

Figure 2. Variety of wood and metal cutting blades.

3. The number of teeth per inch(T.P.I.) affects the smoothnessand speed of the cut. A wood cut-ting blade for general purpose willusually have 6-10 T.P.I., a metalcutting will have 12-20 T.P.I.Another factor is the tooth styleand how the teeth are set (theamount the tooth is bent awayfrom the plane of the blade). Mostblade manufacturer’s provideguidelines on their packaging forthe types of materials and speedsto use for a particular blade style.Review their guidelines carefullybefore choosing a blade for a par-ticular project.

Figure 2 shows the range of blades forwood and metal cutting available fromGrizzly.

BLADE INSTALLATION

Make certain the tool is unplugged whileinstalling the blade.

1. Make sure the Orbit Selectorswitch is in Position III. See Figure 3.

Turn the switch off and unplug the JigSaw from power before attemptingblade installation or any adjustments.Serious injury may occur if the unitshould be accidentally started whileinstalling the blade

Fig 3. Orbiter selection in Position III.

Fig 4. Inserting blade into plunger.

Fig 5. Tightening blade locking screw.

2. Take the blade and turn it so theteeth are facing the side of thefootplate, and insert the mountend into the plunger. See Figure 4.Twist the blade 90˚ so the teethare now pointing forward, then pullit down slightly. Make certain theblade is positioned in the grooveof the roller which backs up theblade.

3. Insert the screwdriver includedwith this Jig Saw into the hole atthe top front of the saw. SeeFigure 5. Tighten the screw whilemaking sure the blade stays in theroller groove.

4. To remove the blade, reverse theprocess described above.

G8994 Variable Speed Jig Saw-6-

There are four settings for orbital action ofthe blade, controlled by a lever switch. Theeffect of the settings is shown in Figure 6below. When set on Position III the bladeoscillates forward in the stroke, which ishelpful when cutting wood or soft materi-als. The Position 0 setting eliminates allforward oscillation and the blade strokes

ORBITAL ACTION

straight up and down. This is good formaterials with a strong cutting resistancesuch as metals and where a very clean cutedge is desired.

Changes in the orbital movement can bemade with the motor turned on.

BLADE SPEED & CHIP BLOWER

Controlling Blade Speed

Blade speed or stroke rate is controlled bya trigger style switch under the handle.Speed increases as the trigger is pulled. There is also a recessed circular switch inthe trigger which controls the maximumstroke rate. See Figure 7. The switch ismarked with ranges from 1 to 6 where 1 isthe lowest stroke rate and 6 is the highest. The adjustment is infinitely variablebetween settings.

The proper speed depends upon the typeof material and the blade. Experiment witha scrap piece of material when first makinga cut to see how the cutting action andsmoothness is. Adjust blade speed andthe rate of feeding the blade into the workuntil the action is smooth and the motordoes not slow down excessively.

Fig 7. Blade speed control switch.

Setting Chip Blower

The toggle switch next to the orbital move-ment selector controls the chip blowingdevice. See Figure 8. When set as shownin the photograph the amount of air is at itshighest level. This is suitable for cutting inwood when it is desirable to blow the saw-dust out of the way to see the cut line. There are two additional settings whichprogressively reduce the amount of airdelivered. The lowest setting may be usedfor cutting in metal where cutting oil isbeing used and it is not desirable to haveair move the oil away from the cutting sur-face.

FOOTPLATE ADJUSTMENT

The footplate can be adjusted for cutting at90˚ to the surface as well as any anglefrom ±45˚. To be certain the footplate iscutting at precisely 90˚, it is useful to checkthe blade squareness to the footplate withthe use of a small machinist’s square. SeeFigure 9.

Fig 9. Checking blade squareness.

Fig 10. Setting footplate for angle cuts.

Fig 11. Footplate positioned for flush cutting.

To adjust to another angle, use the sup-plied Allen® Wrench to loosen the bolt hold-ing the footplate. Slide the plate forwardslightly to disengage it from the notch, andtilt it to the desired angle. At the 45˚ pointsthere are notches which position the plate.By pushing the plate back when near 45˚,the notches will lock the plate in position. Ifan angle between 90˚ and 45˚ is desired, set the angle and leave the plate in the for-ward position, and tighten the bolt. SeeFigure 10.

The footplate can also be set to accommo-date flush cutting. This might be usedwhen it is desirable to cut right up to a wallor other vertical surface. Remove the boltholding the footplate with the Allen®

wrench. Slide the plate backward so themounting hole lines up with the rearmostmounting hole. Reinstall and tighten thebolt. The footplate’s front edge will beslightly behind the leading edge of theblade as shown in Figure 11.
