Vanity Fair was an English magazine published weekly in London between 1868 and 1914 and considered to be the literary and social voice of Victorian and Edwardian Britain. From 1869, each issue featured a noteworthy national or international personality as a caricature, which was accompanied by a witty and sometimes biting biographical sketch.

When the magazine folded, the numerous over run prints from back issues were purchased by an American collector, who disposed of enough of the less desirable caricatures to ensure the value of the remaining prints. These prints have changed hands twice since then but remain an intact collection of unique scope and stature.

Some 50 eminent musicians were included in Vanity Fair for their contributions to composition, performance and the Royal Academy of Music itself. The high social standing of musicians, particularly within the London elite, is reflected in the considerable number of celebrated musicians featured in Vanity Fair.

The caricatures by Spy and others often poked gentle and sometimes waspish fun at their subjects; Vanity Fair was not overawed by greatness. There is no doubt that the famous caricatures — by great artists of the day including Sir Leslie Ward, who studied at Eton and then the Royal Academyof Arts and published under the pen name Spy — will remain as sought after and highly regarded in the future, as in the past and present.

Through the Royal Academy of Music, this is a unique opportunity to acquire a single print or collections of them and support the tireless work of the Academy in supporting young musicians to fulfil their potential.

Each of these original prints will be despatched together with a facsimile copy of the relevant biographical sketch.
