Helpende Hand kry gereeld met maatskaplike gevallete doen enwerk nou saammetmaatskaplike organisasiessoos die Suid-Afrikaanse Vrouefederasie (SAVF) en dieChristelikeMaatskaplikeRaad (CMR).Dié organisasiesondervind ’n groot tekort aan pleegouers. HelpendeHand het daarom besluit om saam met hierdie organisa-sies ’n platform te skep om dié probleem aan te pak.

Volgens Isabel Faurie, maatskaplike werker by Hel-pende Hand, weet mense wat pleegouers wil word dik-wels nie watter proses om te volg nie. Daarenteen hetmaatskaplike organisasies ’n dringende behoefte aanpleegouers, maar geen manier om hulle te identifiseerof te kontak nie. Helpende Hand se nuwe platform salskakeling tussen die onderskeie partye bewerkstellig envergemaklik. Die organisasie het egter geen statutêremagte nie en is nie by die keuring van pleegouers ofdie plasing van kinders in pleegsorg betrokke nie.

Volgens Annette van Loggerenberg, bestuurder vanCMR-Noord, is daar landswyd ’n reusebehoefte aanpleegouers. Sy verduidelik dat CMR-Noord slegs dien-ste aan Gauteng, Noordwes en Limpopo lewer, maar dat

daar in hierdie drie provinsies elke jaar ’n behoefte aanongeveer 200 pleegouers is.

Verskeie faktore dra by tot die tekort aan pleegouers,insluitend die uitdagings wat met pleegsorg gepaard-gaan. “Pleegsorg is ’n groot verantwoordelikheid omdatpleegouers verantwoordelikheid aanvaar vir die daag-likse versorging van ander persone se biologiese kin-ders,” verduidelik Van Loggerenberg.

“Kinders wat by pleegouers geplaas word, is dikwelserg getraumatiseerd en hul moeilike gedrag stel hoë eiseaan pleegouers.Weens emosionele en fisiese verwaarlo-sing het die kinders dikwels verskeie gesondheidspro-bleme en kognitiewe agterstande.”

Maatskaplike organisasies bied ondersteuning aanpleegouers om die proses te vergemaklik. “CMR-Noordbied ’n driedag-opleidingskursus aan potensiële pleeg-ouers en gee ook vir hulle ’n handleiding om hulle virdie uitdagings van pleegsorg voor te berei. Verdere on-dersteuning word aan hulle gebied in die eerste paarmaande nadat die kinders in hulle sorg geplaas is.”

VANDERBIJLPARK. - A huge debate was recently sparkedby Sedibeng District Municipal (SDM)Mayor SimonMaholeMofokeng.

This was recently when he delivered the 2015 HumanRights Lecture at the North West University (NWU) VaalCampus.

Mofokeng said, “When I was asked to come and give thisMemorial Lecture I reflected on three things. Firstly, I remem-bered how the death of 69 protesters and the serious maimingof 180 others by the apartheid security forces on March 21of 1960. This became a turning point in the struggle for free-dom and human dignity.

“The unarmed protestors were protesting against the hated`dompasess’ – which racially barred the majority of South Af-ricans from enjoying their full rights to citizenship.”

Mofokeng sparked statements that the racial struggleswere not yesterday’s issues, but reflected a struggle thatstill affected learners - especially in Higher LearningInstitutions - struggles they have to deal with even today.While VUT Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor GordonZide agreed with these statements from students, hiswords were that `change must be embraced by all’.

Zide said, “In order for transformation to happen, itneeds to be embraced by all. Our institutions needchange-makers who are the people who can really formpart of a mainstream transformation.” On matters of ed-ucation, Mofokeng said, “There are still inequalities, es-pecially in education, that originate from the past. Ac-cording to research 35 percent of the first-years dropout after their first year in higher education. Many fac-tors cause this dropout-rate, such as financial aid and

so on.” Mofokengtold students that themunicipality was do-ing everything in itspower to help with fi-nancial aid to needystudents. “You as stu-dents need to study infaculties that can helpdevelop the Sedibengregion.”

Mofokeng addedthat this region’s`niche’ had beenidentified as water(hydropolis) and thatthe mentality of peo-ple has to be gearedtowards what it is thatwater can do to growthe economy in Sedi-beng.

The event was at-tended by dignitariesfrom theVaalUniver-sity of Technology(VUT), the NWU, lo-calmunicipalities andstudents in general.

I have beenpracticing here since 1997 and am al-ways surprised by how few people re-alise that they have an actual conditionthat needs to be treated on a daily basis.People generally complain that their eyesjust feel sore and tired, especially aftera long day in front of the computer, orburn a lot when reading and watchingTV. Here are some Dry Eye questionsanswered:What is a Dry Eye?Basically, it just means that there arenot enough tears in the eye. The natu-ral tear film keeps the surface of the eyemoist, lubricates the inside of the eye-lids (makes blinking comfy), nourish-es the eye and cleans and protects theeye by washing away foreign particles.It also keeps the corneal surface stableend even. This all means that when thetears stop working properly, your eyesno longer feel comfortable and your vi-sion becomes unstable.What does a Dry Eye feel like?Typical symptoms include:Burning sensationBlurred vision that comes and goesRed eyesSandy, gritty feeling in eyesEyes that tear a lot, especially when con-centratingIncreased light sensitivityDecreased contact lens toleranceWhite, stringy dischargeWhat causes Dry Eye?Dry Eye basically occurs if the tear pro-duction is inadequate or when tearsevaporate excessively. EnvironmentalFactors: fans; air conditioners; heat-ers; dry and windy climate conditions;working in dry and dusty environmentsLifestyle Factors: smoking; medica-

tions such as an-t i - d e p r e s s a n t s ,antihistamines, de-congestants, oralcontraceptives andmany more; focusingfor hours on a tablet,cell phone or com-puter orTV screen; excessivereading or needle-work; driving long distances regularlyPhysical Factors: aging (causes a nat-ural reduction in tear production); cer-tain medical conditions such as diabe-tes, arthritis, menopause, lupus, HIVand thyroid problems.What can be done about a Dry Eye?Lubricating eye drops and gels: Justas with any chronic condition you mightsuffer from, a dry eye needs to be treateddaily. A lubricating eye drop should beused. Make sure that it is formulated fora Dry Eye, and not for allergies or infec-tions. Remember a Dry Eye doesn’t goaway when you use the occasional drop,or when your eyes feel better. Dropsshould be used daily for as long as theenvironmental, lifestyle and physicalfactors listed above are present in yourlife. Supplements: Fish oils like Ome-ga 3, 6 and 9 and Flaxseed Oil are oftenrecommended.Proper sunglasses: Us-ing a quality pair of sunglasses helps re-duce the light sensitivity symptoms andkeeps the wind away from your eyes.Make sure the lenses have sufficient UVprotection. MEYERTON . - Eskom recently an-nounced its implementation of stage 2 load-shedding. According to Eskom, this is dueto a shortage of generation capacity.

This has resulted in a lot of confusionand speculation amongst Vaal Triangle res-idents regarding load shedding and howschedules work. Midvaal Local Municipal-ity has found a better way to explain all ofthis, including a how-to guide that will getresidents through `dark’ days.

There are three sources of electricity inthe region, namely Emfuleni Local Munici-pality (ELM), Midvaal Local Municipalityand mainstream electricity supplier Eskom.The Midvaal Municipality understands thefrustration of residents and is currently en-

gaging with Eskom to have schedules pro-vided for all areas of Midvaal.

Media Liaison officer Aaliyah Dangorsays, “Residents can off-set load sheddingby reducing energy consumption in bothresidential and business areas by followingeasy tips, such as turning off electrical devi-ces which are not in use, choosing to usea clothes line than using a tumble-dryer,buying energy efficient light bulbs, install-ing a solar geyser, controlling the amountof hot water usage at home.”

Dangor adds that while energy efficiencyis important, people must also think aboutbeing ready for load shedding.

“There are many things that can be usedin the absence of electricity, such as solar

lighting, gas heaters and stoves, includingcandles and generators.”

Dangers are associatedwith some of these productsbut they can really be usefulif precautions are taken.

All these products thoughwill enable residents to con-tinue with their householdchores.

“Load shedding can besuch a pain, especially dur-ing the winters when it getsdark very quickly and theweather is ice cold.

This is something thatcan happen at anytime and

residents need to be ready at all times,”Dangor concludes.

BESTANDDELE:1 Rooibokboud250 g spek, in 3 cm repies gesny1 koppie rooi asyn2 tlp sout2 tlp bruin suiker‘n handvol rosyntjies2 groot knoffelhuisies, gekap1 tlp peper½ tlp gemaalde gemmerVir die marinade benodig u:1 gesnyde ui1 lourierblaar6 heel naeltjies3 koppies rooiwyn2 tlp olieVir die verglansing benodig u:4 tlp fyn appelkooskonfyt2 tlp meel4 tlp sjerrieMETODE:Plaas spek, 2 tlp asyn, 1 tlp sout en 1 tlp

suiker in ’n klein houer en mari-neer dit so 45 minute. Maak gaat-jies in die wildsboud met ‘n skerpmes en vul dit met ‘n rosyntjie,‘n stukkie knoffel en spek.Meng peper, gemmer, die oor-

blywende sout en suiker en vryfdit met die hand in die boud. Ge-bruik ‘n bakpan groot genoeg virdie boud en meng die bestanddelevir die marinade met die oorbly-wende asyn.Laat die mengsel kook en voeg

die boud dan by. Draai die boudso 10minute totdat dit rondomge-seël het.Verwyder dit van die hitte en

laat dit in die marinade afkoel. Asdit verkoel het, los dit 24 uur in‘n koel plek en draai dit ‘n paarkeer om.Plaas die boud in ‘n bakpan met

‘n koppie marinade en sit dit 10mi-nute in ‘n oond wat tot 220°C voorverhit isom te skroei.Verlaag die hitte tot 180°C vir die oorbly-

wende baktyd. Bak dit tussen 8 en 10 minuteper 500 g vleis vir rou tot halfgaar. Bedruip

die vleis gereeld en voeg meer marinade bywanneer nodig.Meng die meel, konfyt en sjerrie en smeer

dit oor die vleis om dit oor die laaste 10 minu-te te verglans.

Wanner dit gaar is, sit die boud op ‘n op-dienbord en laat dit in ‘n warm plek rus vir10 tot 15 minute. Bedien met groente en geelrosyne.

MEYERTON. - The Midvaal-90.6fm inaugu-ral Fun Walk for Human Rights Day was ahuge success and was attended by all.

Local businesses, NPOs, families andschool children all geared up to take part inthe event that would contribute to charity.

The 5km route began in Mitchell Street andwent through Meyerton into Sicelo.

The atmosphere was buzzing, with children

singing, and various groups chanting theirown war cries along the way. Several groupsalso dressed up in `wacky’ costumes to set themood for the entire day.

Midvaal Local Municipal Media Liason of-ficer Aaliyah Dangor says: “There were sev-eral stalls set up at the municipal grounds, in-cluding the `Stand with Stan’ Stall displayingdifferent types of prosthetic limbs, the CAN-

SA stall where people could get their hairspray-painted, South African National BloodServices (SANBS), Old Mutual providing avoluntary testing station for general health,the local Community Police Forums selling`boerewors’ rolls, and a few local businesses.”

The Midvaal Arts Institute performed sev-eral dances for an appreciative crowd. Pro-

ceeds from the event were donated to theStand with Stan Organisation, which donatesprosthetic limbs to those in need.

“The Midvaal Fun Walk is set to becomeone of the most anticipated events on the Mid-vaal calendar, uniting the local communityand providing a chance to give back to a wor-thy cause,” Dangor concludes.
