John LeeOriginally from the UK, John has lived in Vancouver for more than 15 years and has been writing and tweeting about the city for anyone who cares to listen. For this project, he especially enjoyed hanging out in historic neighborhoods such as Gastown and Chinatown, and on Main St, where some of his favorite bars are located. The highlight of his research was making sure he tasted as many local craft beers as possible…just to be sure he wasn’t missing any. For more

information on John, visit www.johnleewriter.com.

Our Writer

Our StoryA beat-up old car, a few dollars in the pocket and a sense of adventure. In 1972 that’s all Tony and Maureen Wheeler needed for the trip of a lifetime – across Europe and Asia overland to Australia. It took several months, and at the end – broke but inspired – they sat at their kitchen table writing and stapling together their first travel guide, Across Asia on the Cheap. Within a week they’d sold 1500 copies. Lonely Planet was born.

Today, Lonely Planet has offices in Melbourne, London, Oakland and Delhi, with more than 600 staff and writers. We share Tony’s belief that ‘a great guidebook should do three things: inform, educate and amuse’.

Day Two Main Street (p131)

M Have a lazy late start then get moving with coffee (plus a side order of hip-

sters) at Gene Cafe. Then head downhill on Main to explore the city’s new gallery district, the Flats, colonizing a host of old industrial units. Next, hop on and off the number 3 bus southwards as you explore Main.

Main Street (p131)

R Bus to the 18th Ave intersection and hop off at the Main Street Poodle

statue for some on-foot wandering. Check out Vancouver’s best indie stores, from vinyl-loving Neptoon Records to the delightfully quirky Regional Assemby of Text station-ery store. Back on the bus, head north to the intersection with Broadway and transfer to the 99B-Line express; you’ll be at Commer-cial Dr in 10 minutes.

Commercial Drive (p117)

N Spend the evening bar (or coffee-house) hopping around the area.

Whatever you do, don’t miss Storm Crow Tavern, Vancouver’s only nerd pub.

Lunch Join locals for a grilled cheese sandwich at Rumpus Room (p136).

Dinner Head to cannibal café (p120) for perhaps the city’s best burger.

Day OneGastown (p80)

M Start your wander around old town Gastown in Maple Tree Sq.

Commune with the jaunty ‘Gassy’ Jack Deighton statue and reflect on the fact that Vancouver might not be here today if it wasn’t for the pub he built. Since it’s a little too early for a drink, peruse the cool shops along Water St, including Orling & Wu and John Fluevog Shoes.

Chinatown (p80)

R Your lunch spot is on the way to Chinatown, another top historic

’hood. Spend some time winding around the kaleidoscopically hued streets here. Don’t miss the Chinatown Millennium Gate on Pender and the aromatic grocery and apoth-ecary stores on Keefer St. Then go on the hunt for the Jimi Hendrix Shrine, before ending your afternoon at the delightful Dr Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden.

Downtown (p48)

N Continue on foot to downtown and nip upstairs to the Railway Club,

a great locals’ hangout with craft beer and eclectic live music.

Lunch Rainier provisions (p84) is perfect for great-value, hipster dining.

Dinner Head east on Hastings for a carnivorous feast at Wildebeest (p88).

Day FourUniversity of British Columbia (p161)

M Start your day at the biggest uni-versity in British Columbia, explor-

ing a surprising wealth of attractions. The Museum of Anthropology and Beaty Biodiversity Museum are must-sees, while the green-thumbed should also check out the UBC Botanical Garden and the Nitobe Memorial Garden. Stick around and explore the waterfront campus: it’s dotted with intriguing public artworks.

Kitsilano (p161)

R It’s all about shopping on West 4th Ave this afternoon. You’ll find

plenty of cool independent stores and bou-tiques here. Don’t miss Zulu Records and travel-themed store Wanderlust, and pop into 49th Parallel Coffee when you need a pit stop.

Granville Island (p98)

N Continue on to Granville Island for drinks at Granville Island Brew-

ing Taproom before catching something theatrical at Granville Island Stage or a raucous improv show at Vancouver The-atresports League (just remember: if you sit in the front, they’ll likely pick on you).

Lunch Head for lunch at Kitsilano’s Sophie’s cosmic café (p170).

Dinner Tuck into a farm-to-table feast at Fable (p168).

Day ThreeStanley Park (p52)

M Get here before the crowds to stroll the seawall, photograph the totem

poles and nip into the Vancouver Aquar-ium to commune with the aquatic critters. Consider exploring the park by bike if you have time. You’ll find some beady-eyed blue herons hanging out at Lost Lagoon – duck into the Nature House to find out more about them.

West End (p48)

R Fully explore the tree-lined West End neighborhood, including Davie

and Denman Sts. Save time for English Bay Beach and Roedde House Museum. There are also plenty of coffeehouses and shopping spots to lure your attention.

West End (p48)

N Davie St is the center of Vancouver’s gay nightlife scene, and the area

has plenty of cool options for folks of all persuasion to hang with the locals. Con-sider a sunset-viewing cocktail at Sylvia’s Lounge in the neighborhood’s ivy-covered heritage hotel. Or dive into Lolita’s and drink yourself merry on cocktails.

Lunch Exit the park for noodles nearby at Motomachi Shokudo (p64).

Dinner consider some smashing Spanish tapas at Espana (p64).
