coming first in Wildthang. It is always impressive to see thecars these 'kids' build. The cars race under a modifiedelectrathon race rules requiring three driver changes duringthe race and with slightly different minimum weight limits. In the afternoon the Delta-Q open class was run. This racewas open to anyone who wished to race and uses thenational electrathon race rules.

http://electrathonamerica.org/Many thanks to Dave Cloud for assisting again this year inrunning the races and congratulations to his daughter whodrove Cloud Racing's car #40 to victory.

Winner of the Raffle PrizeThe winner of the raffle prize,a Meridia electric bicycledonated by Christian of EVVoltage was Aviv Keshet. Heis a member of the UBCElectric Bike club so the prizewas quite apropos. You cansee this bike and others athis store in New West besideCap's Bicycles.

Some comments from WalterI would like to thank all the volunteers in VEVA who makethis race possible every year. Without the people who pitchin, this event would not be possible. We also went to a newlevel this year with the conference. This new event addedto the overall weekend in a very dramatic fashion. Welldone by all.On the sponsor and exhibitor side, we need to recognize allthe corporate and member donations. First is Christian, whose company EV Voltage donated the raffle prize of theMerida bicycle. We need to get shoppers out to his store inNew Westminster. Then Delta-Q for donating the winnerprizes for the two electrathon races. I did notice thembringing in a young lightweight driver to the afternoonrace in an almost successful bid to keep the charger, butShannon Cloud took the patience route and hung on totake the charger home to Dad. Other sponsors such asAinsworth Electric and Dave Koehn, with their sponsorshipof the power set-up, Deka batteries with their cashdonation, St. John's Ambulance who come out to assistand the Scouts who fed us, Dynasty who spentconsiderable dollars to put a large number of vehicles infront of us, as well as sponsoring the posters, StormBrewing for hosting our BBQ, and the list goes on. The Cityof Vancouver was again very helpful in renting us the site. Andrew of Yellow Cab spent a lot of his own time, and tiedup his Prius, explaining things to attendees. On the member level, everyone pitched in. Russ for gettingthings going, John and Alan for the variety of things all yearand the conference, Gordon for keeping all the emails andwebsite flowing, Robert for the bicycle area again, and themany who pitched in Saturday to keep the course set-upand the races going. For a bunch of volunteers and unpaidprofessionals, we do very well. Though late starting andrained on, the BBQ went well. What have I added to the list for next year. At the strategiclevel, we need to get some professional advertising done. This may mean finding some radio and newspapers groupsthat want to sponsor us with advertising. At the site level, Iwould suggest we look at renting the extra lot by the Redbarn and putting all the bicycles and carts in there. I thinkwe still need to have the track, as the electrathon needsthat scale of track, and the cars can use it to demonstrate. I will look at a cheaper method of moving the concrete thanthe crane. Added to my checklists, which will be circulatedto all prior to the next REV, is the speaker system (nobodylistens to me otherwise), our own set of electrathon flags, ordering the trophies, and establishing a menu.Questions to the members. Do we want to do anotherconference day on the Sunday? Do we hold off on theconference until we get the demand from another groupsuch as EAA? Do we upgrade to a Michelin Bibendum daylike in the US, etc.As always, suggestions are welcome, so lets start planningfor next year.

The local E Bike vendors were there in force. There is ahuge number of models to choose from. Here Janko isshowing off the Wavecrest E Bike.

Al Godfrey from Richmond always gets the double takeswith his immaculate Porsche 928 conversion. It is using aSiemens A/C motor and controller.

Everyone retired to Storm Brewing after the show for a littleSuds and grub. Thanks again to James for the greathospitality.

Some comments from the internetFrom Don Crabtree aka Father Time

I agree, the show wasgreat. Jessica reallyenjoyed the veggyburgers.I'm sorry the little greenthree wheeler wouldn'trun, but somewherebetween 3:00 am andarriving at the show it

lost it's mind. I think the rain got in. Maybe a golf techcontroller for wood burn. The trip home was also interresting for us. We stopped inBurlington,Wa.for gas and noticed we had no running lights. Theheadlights and emergency flashers still worked so weheaded for Burien. About 1 and ahalf hours later we gothome, the emergency flashers now welded on full time. It'soff to the repair shop to get the lights fixed for next weeksfamily reunion in Crabtree, Oregon. I'm taking the " BlueDragon Fly" to give rides to all the cousins.

Father TimeI had a blast! This wasd one of the best VEVA events of the last 5 or 6 Ihave been to.I made it home in one piece. I had a few "Spins" in theRanger towing Goldie. Side ways on the I-5 to 104 Exitramp is a great way to wake up.... No Damage... and I DIDmake the 11:45 Boat to Kingston.Wet,Tired, Sunburned and 7 minutes to make the last Boatof the night...is not a Safe way to drive. I let John Wayland(aka Plasma Boy) fry the last of my oldburn out tires off of Goldie, We have photos and somebodyhas Video. It was windy, but She made enough Smoke tohide in STILL!. Those old Optimas are getting tired, butthey still can do a Damn Fine Smoke show.I almost lost the front right Fender when the tire belts brokeloose at Redline. I lost some wiring and paint and somebent stuff. But Hey The Fun of Wayland trying to breakGoldie... is priceless. Comment of the Day ": Gezzz you aughta put Goldie's HalfShafts in Gone Postal"... Something to be said for Good STOCK half shafts...

Ed Thorpe from California brought up his highly modifiedsparrow. It has been loaded with Optima Yellow Topbatteries and a Godzilla controller for that extra bit ofoomph.

Douglas Hardwick of Harbour launch brought this beautifullittle electric runabout. He and his family use if for daytripping and getting about up in Madeira Park.EAA Conference

The conference was very well attended. We hadrepresentatives from all over North America and worldclass presentations by several groups. Proffesors AndyFranks presentation on the Future Truck and the researchthey are doing on pluggable hybrids was very informative. Itook the core of his presentation to say that if done carefullya plug in hybrid with a 60 mi battery only range can be buildand be cost efficient with a normal ICE version of the samevehicle while at the same time the amount of polution is

reduced dramatically. You can have your cake and eat ittoo – it only requires vision. I wish them good luck in thisyears competition.See: http://mae.ucdavis.edu/%7Efuturecar/FutureTruck/ formore information on their project.Walter Wardrup followed up with a great presentation onthe H2 Leader project and the plans to build the so calledhydrogen hiway.Mountain Power presented their research (as much as theywould tell us) on LiIon battery systems. They showed avehicle capacity battery that fits inside an 8x12x16 (?) sizepelican case. This is currenlty being tested by CommercialBody Builders in one of the IT cars.At this point I had to leave and so missed the presentationsby Rail Power and Phll Dayson. Maybe some of the otherclub members present can put some comments togetherfor a future newsletter. Many of us met at the Spaghetti Factory in Gastown for awrapup dinner and great gab.

4. I have decided to sell my "Electric Hare" (1982 VWRabbit). I have not used it for 3 years and my son in lawthen used it to commute from Sorrento to Salmon Arm(about 25k each way). However last summer thebatteries seemed to be losing their strength. I don'twant to buy new batteries for the little I use it. Also a tirewent flat and is no good now. It has low rollingresistance Goodyear tires. At time of conversion the"Hare" would go 80k between charges and would couldbe driven at 75 to 80 k on the highway without drawingtoo much juice from the batteries. It has 20 6V deepcycle Trojan batteries plus a 12V accessory battery. 9inch Advanced DC motor, PMC speed controller, onboard K&W 120V charger, on board 12V accessorybattery charger, 12V vacuum pump for the powerbrakes, regenerative braking, and a electric meter to tellyou how many KW you use each charge. It seats thedriver plus one passenger as part oh the battery pack isin the rear of the car. Part of the pack is under the hood.In the 8 years I have had the car it has been free frombreak downs except for 2 blown in line fuses and 1 flattire. The fuse problems were splashing water where itshouldn't be and carelessness when cleaning thebattery connections. The car is red with lightning bolts

on the sides.I am asking $2250.00Thanks Bob AndersenPhone: 250-828-2073Email: [email protected].
