This is how we can perfectly describe the pigeon game that the Robert Van Eycken colony has showcased over the last few years. The region around Erps-Kwerps in the province Bra-bant will therefore soon never be what it used to be… indeed, the chance that anyone will equal, let alone ‘improve on’ the performances in the long distance and grand distance of figurehead and pigeon celebrity Robert Van Eycken… is exceptionally small. Robert has had a blitz career coloured with a very long series of triumphs, 3 national and 1 international vic-tory and a trophy cabinet in need of expansion… due to overflowing! Later it will be over and out… everything will be sold… due to health problems there is no other solution.

From ‘chicory merchant’ to super chasmpion with the pigeonsErps-Kwerps is situated in the middle of what they describe in the history books as the ‘Chicory region’. Robert Van Eycken (born in 1926) worked all his life as a vegetable merchant (chicory and cabbages) and fruit. Every other day he travelled to Paris with his lorry, in be-tween loading and unloading, it was at times ‘hard labour’… Robert ultimately suffered from a ‘bad back’ which meant that he could no longer clean the lofts himself… for this he could rely on the help of Freddy Uyterhoeven… but feeding, bringing his pigeons to their peak, letting them ‘explode’ at the right time… Robert Van Eycken understood the art better than anybody, the nicest proof of the unmistakable ‘super champion’ hidden inside him.In his busy work period (1962-’88) he was forced to leave the pigeon sport for what it was… but, with his retirement in sight, Robert made a new start in the pigeon sport in 1988. And they will have felt it there in Brabant and the surroundings… in no time the Robert Van Eycken colony grew to become a real topper in its sort, to one of the better colonies of the province, even our country. First in the middle distance with pigeons from Alberic de Veseleer from Tollembeek, Jos Deno from Leefdaal and 4 youngsters from Deceuninck-Vanhoucke… with which he was king of the small middle distance in Woluwe in 1995, and also ‘King’ of the extreme middle distance. They were also the years in which the first national victory was booked (from Bourges in 1995), and he was allowed to climb the national podium as 5th National Champion Yearlings KBDB in 1998!The ‘Alex’, the ‘Bijou’, the ‘Blitz’ (line 2nd Nat Limoges by Filip & Norbert Norman) were the toppers out the first years! When he later aimed his sights more at the long distance… pigeons came from National Champion Long Distance KBDB 2004, and personal friend of Robert, namely the late Gaston Devooght from De Haan… the lines of the ‘Wouter’ (1st Nat Dax 2.088 p., 21st Nat Limoges 7.776 p.), ‘Vechter’, ‘Aldo’ (1st Nat Pau 2.144 p.), the ‘Boerin-neke’… they formed the solid foundations on which the current long distance successes by Robert Van Eycken are still based, with which he has achieved national victories and top clas-sifications… the Devooght pigeons still form for 75% the ‘backbone’ of the colony. Later the famous De Rauw-Sablon pigeons also joined them (in 2003 Robert bought a.o. the top couple ‘Herve x Marthe’… which a.o. are grandparents of the 1st Nat Limoges ’06 by De Graeve-Van Geert, and great grandparents of ‘Andy’: 4th Nat Ace bird KBDB ‘11), the line ‘Perpignan King’ from Kurvers-De Weerd… but also the bloodlines Wynands & Son, Van Ophuyzen-Marell and Cor de Heijde were successful in crossing. Noble long distance blood with which Robert has achieved the highest triumphs up to national level! The Belgian flag has already been waving about three times in Erps Kwerps with (inter)national victories from:1st National Bourges 19951st National Marseille 2002 (and 4th International)1st International Marseille 2003This in addition to a wondrous chain of top performances seasoned with a recital of victories up to provincial level! You will learn all about it in this little ‘epic’.

Even a ‘cowardly theft’ didn’t break himThey were striking performances, which also the ‘immoral’ men had noticed. Because in September 2004 Robert was visited by burglars, who sole more or less the entire breeding team… as a result of which Robert was forced to place a few strong racers from his racing team into the breeding loft early, to take care of the further expansion of the colony togeth-er with his ‘Boris’ (winner 1st Intnat Marseille 20.721 p. 2003, and which luckily escaped the notice of the ‘thieves’). From this moment on, Robert only concentrated on the national long

distance calendar. With this, the Van Eycken-colony was possibly ‘temporarily’ beheaded, but soon bit back hard and mercilessly, and how? It was the ‘Boris’ who became the new ‘stock father’ of the loft, and left his mark more and more on the Van Eycken colony… the results don’t lie! In both 2005 and 2006 Robert was proclaimed General Champion in the Brabant Union, in 2007 he was 1st Champion Long Distance Yearlings, 2nd Champion Long Distance O.b., and he won the ‘Ace bird Rhone Valley’ by CFW. In 2009 superstar ‘Contador’ showed his true colours… was 1st Nat Ace bird Long distance ‘Entente Belge’, 2nd Nat Ace bird Long distance KBDB and was proclaimed ‘Best Long distance pigeon of Belgium’ over 4 national races! It didn’t finish there… because in 2011 it was the turn of that other racing wonder from Erps-Kwerps to display his ‘top class’, the ‘Andy’… which at the end of it all was flagged 4th National Ace bird Long distance KBDB and ‘Best Long distance pigeon of Belgium’ over 4 national races!

In a timespan of hardly 3 years (2009-2011) owning no less than the ‘Best Long distance racer of Belgium’ over 4 national races twice… it is not only unique in the Belgian pigeon sport history… it testifies to the very ‘GREAT CLASS’ radiating from the modern Robert Van Eycken pigeon! Simply ‘WORLD TOP’ in the long distance and grand distance… let there be no doubt about it!

A CHANCE NOT TO BE MISSEDOn 12 February the final curtain will fall for the Robert Van Eycken colony… simply because there is no other choice, a forced departure due to there being no other way out… because body and health can’t or won’t anymore… the verdict of the doctors treating him is irrevers-ible. Nevertheless the Robert Van Eycken colony were far from finished, quite the oppo-site… they were rather at their best, at the climax of their fame. Proven by current toppers as ‘Contador’ (1st Nat Ace bird Long distance ‘Entente Belge’ 2009, 2nd Nat Ace bird Long distance KBDB 2009, and Best Long distance pigeon of Belgium over 4 national races in 2009), the ‘Andy’ (4th Nat Ace bird Long distance KBDB 2011, and Best Long distance pigeon of Bel-gium over 4 national races in 2011), the ‘Jupiter’, ‘Diamant’, ‘Schalie’, ‘Di Stefano’ (9th Nat Ace bird CFW ‘Route du Rhone’), the nest brothers ‘Hincapie I’ and ‘Huberto’, with their brother ‘Hincapie II’, in addition to the ‘Young Crack’, a ‘Branco’ and so many more. All clappers who have set the tone and allowed Robert Van Eycken to play a leading role in the national long

distance and international grand distance happenings!
