A Change to the Homework Policy for Year 7 Commencing 4 March 2019 Following careful consideration by senior staff and helpful input from the school community, we have decided to make some small changes to the Year 7 Homework Policy. After the February half term break, we will be introducing a two-week system of homework setting for Year 7. This will mean that students will be set homework on a fortnightly basis rather than every week. The only exception to this will be English, Maths and Science, which as core subjects we feel should be set more regularly and therefore shall continue to be set once a week. By introducing these changes we hope that the homework burden on our youngest students will be eased, but students will also continue with the opportunity for an outstanding education both at home and in school. Each homework shall continue to be marked by the class teacher or peer-reviewed and students will also continue to have a supporting document to aid completion of the homework and the opportunity to meet with their teacher outside the lesson. Due to the level of support students are receiving, the sanction system for non-completion of homework will remain the same, with students being issued an after school detention for not producing homework to the agreed deadline. I hope you will find the reforms to Year 7 homework welcome and should you have any further questions please contact Head of Year 7, Mrs Edmondson, or Associate SLT for Homework, Mr Avery. We were pleased this week to receive confirmation from ALPS that our performance over the last 3 years at post 16 places us in the top 2% nationally.

Social Media SpotlightEach week, we will be providing an overview of different social media platforms which students may be using in their own time. We hope to provide an insight into what these Apps are, the benefits of using them and the potential dangers that may come from using them.

TikTok (Information sourced from www.internetmatters.org) What is TikTok?It’s a social media App that gives users the opportunity to share 60 second short videos with friends, family or the entire world. Like Twitter-owned Vine and Musical.ly before it, videos shared range from funny sketches to lip-sync videos featuring special effects. Currently, the App is available in 34 languages with 150 million active users. Why is it so popular and what are the benefits? Teeangers say it is a way to express themselves and create short-form video clips to gain a following and build a community around their passions. It also features some great special effects that users can apply to their videos to make them more unique. You can also cross-post the content on other platforms to share it with more people. What are the dangers linked to TikTok and what should parents be aware of? • When you download the App, users can see all the content without creating an account although they are not able to post, like or share anything until they’ve set up an account on the App.• By default all accounts are public so anyone on the App can see what your child shares. However, only approved followers can send them messages.• Users can like or react to a video, follow an account or send messages to each other. There is the risk that strangers will be able to directly contact children on the App.• Children may be tempted to take risks to get more of a following or likes on a video so it’s important to talk about what they share and with who.• To delete an account you have to request a code from the App using a phone number.Further information and guidance about how TikTok and how teenagers can use it safely can be found on this advisory website: https://www.internetmatters.org/hub/esafety-news/tik-tok-app-safety-what-parents-need-to-know/.If you have any concerns about your child’s safety on social media, please contact either Mr Williams (Assistant Head: Pastoral Care) or Gaynor Stainsby (Safeguarding officer).

Year 7 Bright Sparks Learning ChallengesThis half term, we continue to seek ways to extend students’ learning beyond the curriculum with our ‘Bright Sparks’ Learning Challenges. These challenges will be set every half term and cover a range of skills, subjects and learning styles. Students in Year 7 are invited to complete up to three challenges with the winner receiving a £10 voucher and invited to breakfast with Mr Daly. We hope our young people will enjoy the challenge of learning in a different way and the freedom to structure their work however they choose. The new challenges (enclosed) are also available via Twitter, noticeboards, the Library and Form Tutors. There will be a prize for the form with the most entries. Students are welcome to submit their entries ASAP before the end of term.

AHS Book ClubA new Book Club for Year 7 and 8 will be running every Friday lunchtime from 25 January with Miss Vizard and Miss Adams in En7. The club will run from 1.25-1.45pm and is a great place to read something new and chat about it with friends! Why not come along next week to find out more and ask any questions you might have? Books will be provided, and biscuits too. Hope to see many students there.

They got stuck in and our existing students were a great support welcoming them and helping them get around school. We will be sending acceptance letters home to our internal Year 11 students that have applied to Sixth Form. Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.

GCSE Maths and English Resit ResultsToday, students received their GCSE resit results. Please contact Director of Sixth Form or Sixth Form Administrator if you would like any further information regarding their results.

Year 13 Competitive Admissions SuccessWe are delighted to congratulate so many of our competitive admissions applicants this year on receiving offers following their recent interviews. It is extremely competitive to get on to such academic and demanding courses, certainly at Oxford and Cambridge, we are so proud of their achievements. Equally, it is a great achievement to be invited to interview in the first place! Well done all applicants – now keep on going, not long until you are there!

Year 13 Parents’ EveningPlease be reminded that this takes place on Wednesday 30th January following Year 13 Mock Results being distributed on Monday 28th January. Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you are unsure about appointments.

Year 12 Mocks Reminder: Year 12 mock exams will take place w/c Monday 21 January. It is a rigorous process, but one which will work to establish what support is needed and to commend the hard work that had been demonstrated over the Winter term. When results are released they will be followed by a Parents’ Evening (further information to follow).

Wahlfach: Translation from German, means ‘elective’. “Meine Schule fordert, dass ich ein Wahlfach aus der Liste wähle.” = “My school requires me to pick an option subject from the list.”

Prefect updates: Our team of prefects have had an excellent first half term in their role. Here is an overview of the work they have completed:

Paired Reading: • Prefects have been trained by the Head of English (Miss Woolerton) to work, on a weekly basis, as mentors for Year 7 and Year 8, supporting with the paired reading programme. Prefects meet with their assigned student each week and have started to build a really strong relationship, offering support and guidance as they read together. These students have already made excellent progress in the Accelerated Reader quizzes, with some students making over 6 months progress already!

Year 7 and 8 Form Mentoring:• All prefects have been assigned Year 7 or Year 8 forms. They work with the Form Tutor to support these forms, acting as role models for students in form time. They are high profile leaders in form time and support students on a one-to-one basis, acting as mentors and guides. They also help deliver Thought for the Day and the weekly News stories. It is fantastic to see links between KS3 and KS4 students.

E-Safety Campaign: • A sub-group of the prefects are working to produce a student-led “e-safety” campaign which raises awareness of the benefits and potential dangers of social media for students. They are planning a campaign that aims to encourage students to take a social media break and reflect upon their own personal habits.

Anne Frank Exhibition: • Another sub-group of prefects are leading as guides during the upcoming Anne Frank Exhibition. They will, alongside students from other year groups, deliver the lessons learnt from this important annual exhibition.

Whole school support: • All students have already provided valuable support to the school, sitting in on student panel interviews and offering thoughtful and constructive feedback regarding new initiatives and areas for development in school.

Upcoming Student Voice: • Homework Student Voice: We will be collecting student voice on our new approach to homework, with the aim to find further ways to support students and families with the competition of homework and independent study.• KS3 and KS4 Councils: The Student Councils will meet, after half term, to update on their on-going concerns and issues within school.• Mindfulness and Wellbeing: Students will be invited to complete student voice which to reflect upon recent work the school has undertaken in order to improve mental health and wellbeing.

@AHSYork: We are delighted that our 2018 Alps score for A Level performance puts Archbishop Holgate's in the Top 2% nationally! @alpsva

York Independent State School Partnership As part of our ongoing work with the York ISSP, we are very pleased to offer details of the upcoming 2019 Student Masterclasses. The masterclass programme, held annually since 2008, is designed to push and challenge

York’s most able and interested students and is focused on searching for answers to a question. ‘What is Human?’, this year’s question, fascinates people and one which can be thought about from a wide variety of perspectives. A launch meeting will be held for Year 7 and 8 this year, in the Main Hall at Bootham School on Wednesday 6 February, from 7.00-8.00pm. Please see the attached letter for more details, including how to register.

NetballThis week, the Y7 Netball team were away at Manor. Both the A and B teams played amazingly well, displaying resilience and compassion for others. Both games were closely contested, but unfortunately we were not able to produce a win (2-6 and 7-10). Star players of the matches were Rosie Davies, Ruby Allitt and Charlene Ting. Well done to all the ladies that took part.

Cross CountryLottie Langan (Star of the Week) came 2nd in the North Yorkshire Cross Country Championships. Esme Pounder came 9th and Zoe Cardy 29th in the Y7 race, and Inez Khaddi came 8th in the Junior Girls’ race. Well done everyone!

Indoor Athletics Club (Y7 & Y8)We have a new Indoor Athletics Club for Y7 & Y8’s on Tuesdays at lunchtime in the Sports Hall. Students only need to bring their trainers (or PE kit if they wish), it is recommended that they bring a packed lunch so they don’t miss out on their lunch.

Polite Reminder As we start the New Year, we would like to remind parents to ensure that all PE kit is clearly labelled with students’ names. We have had several students with lost, unnamed kit. Any kit that is found and is labelled is sent to reception and returned to students.Thank you.

Jack ClarkeJust as we mentioned least week with news of former student Ben Godfrey and his performance in the Championship with Norwich FC, another former AHS PE student, Jack Clarke, has been putting in player of the match performances at Leeds and has earnt himself a place in the EFL Team of the Week. Jack has also been linked with some high profile clubs in the Premier League. Keep up the great work Jack.
