Value Shading

VALUE: the relative lightness or darkness of an object / area

There are many ways to represent value through shading. Sometimes artists use lines, crossed-lines,

squiggles, dots, bending, etc. Here, we will look at different ways to add value to your work so that you

will be more advanced in your shading techniques. Make sure that your values start at white and go to

the darkest black that you can create with a pencil!

Use lines in only one direction (hatching) to create value.

Use intersecting lines (cross hatching) to create value.

Use squiggles / scribbles to create value.
