Don’t Wait to Solve Your Weight Problem By Sheryl Sowell The Lap-Band ® Center of Oklahoma uses the Lap-Band ® Adjustable Gastric Banding System by Allergan. According to Dr. Ladd Atkins, “It is by far the safest weight loss surgery device on the market today.” Dr. Atkins explains that the Lap-Band ® System is much safer than stomach stapling or gastric bypass surgery because there is no cutting or stapling involved. This process is the least invasive way to use surgery to reduce the amount of food the stomach can hold. “It’s less invasive than gall bladder surgery,” Dr. Adkins explains. The Lap-Band ® Adjustable Gastric Banding System restricts how much the stomach can hold by placing an adjustable band around the upper part of the stomach. There is no cutting or stapling needed to divide the upper stomach pouch from the lower stomach. The result is that patients take in less food. The ideal patient has a BMI (body mass index) of 30 or high- er with at least one comorbidity (secondary disorder or disease), which typically includes type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, and osteoarthritis. Nearly every day I hear folks tell meabout why they think they should notinvest in the stock market right now. Some of them seem to be relativelyreasonable fears about investing, some not so much. I do declare! I havesome stories I would tell you about allthe excuses I have heard….all the wayback to the stories my Mamaw used totell about the Great Depression of 1934(that stuff would curl your toes!), butthat would take more than a month ofSunday’s to recount. So, I will give youthe most popular excuses I have heardover the last 13 years and see if you canrelate to any of them.

1999: The Y2k bug is about to crash allthe world’s computers. “We will haveno accounting of our money at thebank or on our brokerage statements!”2000: The dot-com bubble burst. “Themarket is crashing. It will never comeback!”2001: Terrorist attacks destroyed bothWorld Trade Centers and the hit thePentagon. “The nuclear bomb is next.We need to have all of our moneyunder a mattress at home!”2002: Corporate Accounting Issues.“Enron, WorldCom, Global Crossinghave all betrayed investors thereforeall companies are corrupt and weshould not invest!”2005: Hurricane Katrina wiped outNew Orleans! “This is the beginning ofthe end!”2008: Sub-prime mortgage crisis/Global Financial Crisis. “The banks arecollapsing. There will be no more

economy!” (Don’t ever watch MSNBCin a crisis! That’s another story alltogether!)2009: Worst recession since the GreatDepression. “The market won’t comeback for 20 years!”2011: Europe’s sovereign debt crisis,U.S. Debt Ceiling. “No one in the worldis going to have any money! We are allgoing to hell in a handbasket!”2012: Presidential Election pendingNovember 2012. “The U.S. deficit is sohigh that America can’t regain itsfinancial strength!”2012: The Mayan Calendar endsDecember 21, 2012. “The earth’s gravitational poles are going to reverseand we will all fall out into space. Therefore, there is no need for retirement planning.” (This one takesthe cake!)

Here is ONE good reason why youSHOULD invest in the markets:$23,288,100. This is the amount, a

mere $10,000 invested in the marketsin January of 1934 would have beenworth on December 31, 2010, basedon the performance of the S&P 500index.

Emotionally we are always thinking of reasons not to invest in thestock market. Clearly these headlinesand the fears that they create devisevolatility in the stock market. The truth is the markets always climb

a wall of worry. If you stick your headin the sand to avoid the fears andworry, the markets will pass you by.

It matters where you are invested. It matters who you choose to help you.Find someone who can help you investyour money and manage the volatility.Find someone who can help you dealwith your fears through commonsense. WWine, Eats & Easels

By Sheryl Sowell

“If all be true that I do think, there are five reasons we shoulddrink. Good friends, good times,or being dry, or lest we shouldbe by and by, or any other reasonwhy.” One of the “other reasons

Arrow Neighbors, a non-profitorganization that provides basicneeds emergency assistance tomore than 11,000 financially disadvantaged residents in theBroken Arrow area.

why” mentioned in this populartoast is that drinking can helpthose in need! Proceeds fromthe 11th annual Wine, Eats &Easels on Friday, October 5 willonce again go directly to Broken

Of course, “good friends”and “good times” are included inthe event as well, which will feature 18 talented local artistsdisplaying and selling theirworks in a variety of mediums, more than 20 wineries to prevent any attendee from hav-ing to go “dry,” and 15 restau-rants with delicious eats to com-plement your wine and stimulateyour palate. Back by populardemand, the evening air will befilled with the smooth jazzstylings of Grady Nichols and hisband. The event takes place atthe Farmer’s Market in historicdowntown Broken Arrow, nextto the BA Historical SocietyMuseum. “In the past, thisfundraiser has been described as‘northeast Oklahoma’s classiestevent,’ and we think it is,” saysKate Buster, event coordinator.

Wine, Eats & Easels bringstogether some of the most eclectic and diverse artists fromacross the region. Artists displaytheir art for sale and stickaround to talk to patrons abouttheir work. “You’ll find something for everyone – paintings, sculptures, jewelry, pottery, photography and more,”says Kate.

ARE YOU STILL USINGDRUGSTORE READERS?

520 S. Elm Pl, Broken Arrow, OK

precisionopticalok.comMake sure you see George

interviewed by Channel 8 Anchors atthe bottom of our homepage! (Across from O’Reilly Auto Parts, 81st & Elm)

918-251-6442

Doing your own optometry at a drugstore and settling for a mass production reader is a littlelike using your shoe to drive in a nail. So many folks are optically crippled by using them, becausethey have one at several locations at their home or office. Still, they are never near them when needed. Or, they wind up sitting or stepping on them, because they are not CONSTANTLY ON THEIR FACE like complete RX eyewear. They don’t seem to figure the cost of losing and breaking them or that the safestplace for any glasses is ON YOUR FACE.

Since they are mass produced, the optical center (point of lens where light passes un-deviated) width isnot the same as the person’s personal pupillary distance measurement. This does not mean you will physically hurt your eyes with them, but it does mean that unwanted PRISM can be generated that causes eyestrain and possible double vision in the higher powers.

Also, one eye may demand more strength than the other eye. Then, there is no correction in these mass produced readers to correct for astigmatism. It may be possible that even your doctor recommended them due to budgetary concerns. In the lower powers they can suffice, but a custom madereader or half glass with your doctor’s RX is always the best and can be made to help with heavy computerscreen or near use.

Many of the folks who use drugstore readers are people who basically have pretty good distance vision. Still yet, some of these SAME folks complain they cannot see street signs at night clearly. What typically happens is that they are told to get drugstore readers to save cost. In doing that, the DOCTOR’S distance correction (albeit a mild correction) IS NEVER UTILIZED. Therefore the best acuity DISTANCE and NEAR is NEVER ACHIEVED!

SO WHAT IS THE BEST SOLUTION?Our solution to these problems is to obtain a current doctor’s RX (Ophthalmologist orOptometrist) and then bring this prescription to a competent Optician. We will carefully assistyou in the frame selection so as to consider the prescription, optics, and ergonomic fit. We use two philosophies in styling: a. the minimalist look, which provides the lightest weight and nearly invisible look,or b. traditional plastics and metals with adornments for the ladies to produce that high fashion look.

Our lenses of choice will be the Seiko Perfas Prestige II Digital with Surpass Anti Reflective Coat. We willPre-Fit the frame, take exacting personal measurements and make absolutely sure these measurementsexist in the final inspection of the eyewear. Your new eyewear will become part of you and your visual system and you will look, see and feel GREAT, just like so many of our fine customers over the last 18 years!

SSix Do’s and Don’ts WhenTraveling on a Cruise

By Jocelyn M. Wood

Fall is in the air; winter is not far behind. It’s time to start planning your winter getaway.

Get away from the coldweather this January on a 10-dayHawaiian cruise with RCBBank’s Experiences travel club.Spots are still available for travel-ers to jump on board. Traveldates are January 10-19, 2013.

“A $600 deposit reservesyour space and customers can geta full refund before October 3,should they change their mind,”says Lori Nuzum, RCB BankExperiences Club Director andtrip coordinator.

Leave your coat in the closetand pull out your favorite sum-mer dress. Travelers will experi-ence the islands’ diverse beautyand lively history, including PearlHarbor, Kona’s famous coffeeplantation and lush gardens, waterfalls and exotic wildlife.

Lori Nuzum and RCBExperiences Club Director AnitaJudd-Jenkins have coordinatedand traveled on more than 500trips. They offer six do’s anddon’ts of traveling on a cruise.

Do pack light. “You’ll neverwear all the clothes you take,”

Don’t bother packing ahairdryer or iron. “Hairdryerscan be found practically in everyhotel and on every cruise line,”says Nuzum. “Airlines are very

strict on luggage weight. Packiron-free clothes, so not to wasteprecious weight and avoidincreased luggage fees for the tripout or back.”

Do be adventurous. “Pick

says Lori Nuzum. Nowadays, cruises are going toward a morecasual dining experience, like theHawaiian Cruise. “It’s called free-style cruising and creates a more

relaxed, comfortable environ-ment,” says Nuzum. Anita Judd-Jenkins suggests picking twobasic colors – black, tan or navy –and building your wardrobearound them.

activities that stretch your comfort level, regardless of age,”says Judd-Jenkins. “It’s theseactivities that build confidence, stretch boundaries and make thebest memories to tell and tellagain back home.”

Don’t bring your stress.Hawaiian’s don’t do anything in ahurry. “Their motto is hangloose,” says Nuzum. “Everythingis slow and easy, no worries. When traveling, take the opportunity to walk slower, breathe deeper, relax and leaveyour worries at home.”

Do bring elastic waist “buffet” pants. Cruises areknown for their endless buffets.“There are breakfast buffets, lunch buffets, after lunch buffets, dinner buffets and even midnightbuffets,” says Nuzum. “Give yourself a break and plan toloosen the belt loops.”

Don’t forget snacks and layered clothing for the plane.Depending on where you depart, flight times to Hawaii vary andairlines are serving fewer complimentary snacks or meals.“After you pass security, you canpick up food and drink from awide variety of airport restau-rants and take them on theplane,” says Nuzum. “Once youget on the plane your choices arelimited and you will probably paya pretty penny for a basic sandwich.” Judd-Jenkins recommends layering clothes ontravel day, to be prepared for various temperatures on theplane. “You can be cold oneminute, hot the next,” she says.

To learn more about theupcoming Hawaiian cruise, get intouch with Lori Nuzum at (580)

they do is on trucks, thePerformance Center has “headto toe” accessories for most vehicles. When you buy a new orused truck, the shop can add custom accessories to match yourtype of work or style. Someitems they install include DVDs,leather upgrades (cars andtrucks), auto start systems, window tinting, spray-in bed liners, Weather-Tech custommats, grill guards, brush guards, fender well splash guards, win-dow shades, wheels, tires, powertonneau covers, trailer hitches, goose neck hitches, and much, much more. Most accessoriesbolt on to your truck, are safe, and are covered by warranty.

What’s the first thing mostof us do when we buy a newtruck? We arrange for a spray-inbed liner, and we have the windows tinted. Jeff says BobHurley not only has the numberone spray-in bed liner in thestate, but is the only shop inTulsa applying the Vortex prod-uct. This system creates a high-impact, durable, and insulatedsurface to the bed of any truck. The Performance Center has awindow tinting bay that canstage up to six vehicles at a time.

“We spray the bed with aVortex Liner and tint the windows of every new or usedtruck we sell,” says Jeff. “Thetotal amount of your accessorypackage can be added to yourmonthly vehicle payments.” Andthe accessories you order areinstalled at the Bob Hurley facility.

The really nice thing abouthaving your vehicle accessorized

by the Bob Hurley FordPerformance Center is that theentire delivered package is war-ranted by either Ford or BobHurley Ford. “Our shop has thebest equipment in town, the bestfacility in town, and everythingwe sell is covered by one of thebest warranties in the business,”said Jeff. “And our products andservices are very competitivelypriced.”

As the Performance Centercontinues to grow and expand, they will be looking for addition-al talented, experienced employ-ees that would like to grow withthem. “It’s another way theHurley family can give back tothe community,” says Jeff. “Theyenjoy providing great employment opportunities in theTulsa community.” Bob HurleyFord is family owned and operated.

Bob Hurley Ford has plansfor a new accessories super storeand showroom in the nearfuture. Keep your eyes open forthe announcement. Jeff andKori invite you to drop in to getacquainted and look over thePerformance Center. They bothtake a lot of pride in everythingthey do.

I had my Lap-Band® surgerya little over a year ago, on April27, 2011 at the Lap-Band Centerof Oklahoma. I have lost 81pounds so far. My bariatric surgeon was Dr. Ladd Atkins. The decision to have the surgerywas one of the best decisions Ihave ever made. I had developedall kinds of health issues due tobeing overweight: type 2 dia-betes, high blood pressure andsleep issues. Within weeks of the

The Nut House will host its yearly Route66 Pecan and Fun Fest on Saturday,October 20 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. “FunFest” is an apt description of this event, asit will be filled with color and creativity, with handmade crafts, fall themed activi-ties, local music by Bethany Grace &Gypsy Soul and Klondike5 String Band, and tasty food, making it a celebration forall ages.

This year’s craft show promises to bebigger than ever, giving local artisans achance to display authentic, handmadegoods and other “Made in Oklahoma”items of interest. In the spirit of keepinghistory and tradition, Hazel has invited alocal weaver to demonstrate how she spinsher own yarn on a loom. The Nut Houseis still accepting vendor applications andwill continue to do so up until the week ofthe event, as long as space is still available.

Since this autumn festival is held soclose to autumn’s signature holiday –Halloween – The Nut House will featureplenty of events inspired by this date, including face painting, pumpkin paint-ing, and a costume contest. The age rangefor the costume contest is birth to 12years, with judging held at 2 p.m., and anytheme is welcome. “Last year, we hadeverything from a bumble bee to a vam-pire,” Hazel recalls. “It was a lot of fun.”

Great food is always available at theRoute 66 Pecan and Fun Fest, with HotMama’s Deli offering its usual line ofgoodies: sandwiches made with Boar’sHead meats and Amish cheeses, homemade broccoli salad, cookies, cup-cakes and much more – and of course, homemade pecan pie!

This will be the fourth year The NutHouse has hosted this festival. For manyyears, the Pecan Festival was held inOkmulgee, but in 2009, when Hazelheard it would be discontinued, she wel-comed the opportunity to continue the tradition. She added the reference to

Route 66, not only because of The NutHouse’s location, but because she is committed to preserving the memory ofthis strip of highway that is such an inte-gral part of Oklahoma’s history.“Oklahoma had 400 miles of Highway66, more than any of the seven states itran through,” Hazel notes. “It was thefirst highway to run from the Midwest toCalifornia – and there are still bits andpieces of the old road bed to be foundacross the state.”

In the spirit of tradition, a goodfriend of the family, Delbert Tygart, allowed Hazel’s husband, Darryl, toattach The Nut House’s Route 66emblem to his restored 1966 ChevyImpala Super Sport. The car recently rep-resented The Nut House at the 2012 HotRod Power Tour and will make an appear-ance at the Route 66 Pecan and Fun Fest.“Both this car and Route 66 arereminders of a simpler time,” says Hazel.“We want to honor that.” Festival spon-sors are Champion Refuse, MidwestCrane Services, Suburban Chevrolet,Bank of Commerce and Turf/LandEquipment.

HHip to a Pain-Free Life By Lorrie Ward

Many people think joint replacements are only necessaryin one’s later years, when jointsbegin to show signs of a lifetimeof wear and tear. But joints canbe irreparably damaged at anyage. Mike Hardesty of Claremoreis living proof. “I was in my 30swhen I injured my hip in a soft-ball game,” Mike recounts. “Theinjury left me with constant painand a bad limp.” When thesetwo things did not go away, Mikevisited a doctor and had an MRI,which revealed a grim prognosis:that he would eventually need tohave a hip replacement.

“I put up with the problemfor several years,” says Mike, whorelates that things became sobad, he was taking 20 to 30aspirin a day just to be able tofunction and sleep. “Finally, Icouldn’t stand it anymore.” Mikehad seen advertisements for Dr. Ronald LaButti and decidedto call for a consultation lastsummer.

“I already knew what hewould tell me – that I neededthe hip replaced,” said Mike.“But I really appreciated that hewas upfront and straightforwardwith me right from the beginning, and didn’t try to force

with me about the pain thatwould come afterwards,” Mikesaid. “But he said the outcomewould be better.”

And it was. For Mike, someresults were immediate. “Iremember waking up in the hospital,” he says, “and noticingright away that the nagging pain

anything on me.” Once Mike decided on

surgery as his best option, Dr. LaButti relayed exactly whathe could anticipate during hisexperience, from how much timeoff work he would require tohow much pain he could expectduring recovery. “He was honest

in my groin and hip I’d been living with for years was gone.”Dr. LaButti had predicted any-where from six to twelve weeksoff work, and Mike returned tothe job in seven. When he did,his employees observed theamazing changes. “Everyonenoticed my limp was gone,” he

recalls. “Now they all say I walkfaster than anyone in the shop –and I don’t have to pull myselfup and down the stairs like I didbefore, either.”

It has been a little over ayear since his surgery, and Mikenow embraces a whole range ofactivities that were impossiblebefore, both major and seemingly minor. “I no longerhave to have help putting myshoes on,” says Mike. “And Ionly take aspirin for headaches.”Mike purchased an above groundswimming pool to help him withrehabilitation, and he can easilyget up and down the ladder, which is something he could nothave done before the surgery. And best of all, he can ride amotorcycle again. “I bought a bigold 900-pound bike,” he sayswith a grin. “There was no way I could ride before or even holdit up.”

Now that he’s become accustomed to a normal existence again, Mike wonderswhy he put off the surgery for solong. “I tell people, ‘If you’rehaving pain, don’t wait so manyyears and let it deteriorate like Idid,’” he says. “I should have visited Dr. LaButti a lot sooner. My life is so much better now.”

Mike Hardesty of Claremore is living without pain after a total hip replacement from Dr. LaButti.

This brand-new technology produces a3-D image of the knee which allows for superior surgical accuracy and alignment. When compared to more traditional forms of navigation, theiBlock cutting guide provides a significant advantage not only for the surgeon, but for the patient as well.

When a joint is replaced, even a miniscule misalignment between theimplant and the bones can harm joint performance and longevity. This innovative technique allows for precisemeasurements made dynamically inreal time.

There are only five “iBlock” units in theUnited States, and this technology is available in Tulsa only with Dr. LaButti.
