Students Making a Difference: Relay for Life 2012LVC has been hosting its own Relay for Life for more than a decade and is proud to announce its spring kick off this month! Last year, LVC teams met their goal of $58,000 raised. Relay chairs for 2012, Becca Farson ’12 and Betty Ross ’13, are working toward a goal of $60,000 this year. “Almost every student on campus is affected in some way by cancer. Relay for Life’s goal is to create a world where this deadly disease has no power. This year, LVC is hoping to get the student body, faculty, and community involved in our all-nighter fund-raiser. We will have lots of prizes and giveaways as well as great food, music, and games. Help us in the fi ght against cancer!” said Farson. She and Ross have worked hard to launch this year’s theme, Board Games, with the tagline, “Finish the Fight!” All funds raised benefi t the American Cancer Society.

Student-Run Physical Therapy Free Clinic: Students ReflectLebanon Valley College physical therapy students opened a free clinic in fall 2011. The clinic, “Compassionate Undenied Rehabilitation Experience,” or “C.U.R.E.,” provides free physical therapy services to the underinsured and the uninsured within the local community. Two physical therapy doctoral candidates, Danielle Blase ’10 and Andrew Groft ’10, share their experiences as they reflect on the first few months of C.U.R.E.’s opening.

Q: What did you learn?Blase: I learned a lot about how to run a clinic, as well as learning more about myself. I was able to see how much hard work and dedication really goes into getting something like the clinic started from the ground up. It takes a lot of vision, organization, resources, persis-tence, and perseverance, but it is worth it in the end.

Groft: Students had the opportunity to learn from one another as others more advanced in the curriculum would mentor students who were not as far along. The clinic allows fourth-year students to get earlier exposure into clinic operations. Fifth-year students are able to practice skills they are learning on patients, while under the guidance of sixth-year students and supervision of a licensed physical therapist.

Q: Has it been a rewarding experience?

Blase: Definitely. Not only are we helping members of the community who can benefit from our clinic, but we are helping our classmates and ourselves become better clinicians. It is also rewarding to see the clinic up and running, especially because of the time and effort of many students to make this clinic a reality.

Groft: Yes, the C.U.R.E. clinic has been very rewarding as I have had the opportunity to help the people in the local community, as well as my peers with their clinical skills.

Q: Do you have advice for future C.U.R.E. volunteers?

Blase: Keep lines of communication open among students, faculty, and administration. Also, help and teach each other because we have all been in each other’s shoes. Enjoy what you do and this experience will only benefit you in your education and professional career.

Groft: Come in with an open mind and ask many questions as it will help you and all those around you.

Celebrate Student Research!The Council for Undergraduate Research in Washington, D.C., has selected the week of April 16–20 for Undergraduate Research Week 2012. Lebanon Valley College will be joining hundreds of colleges and universities from across the nation to showcase the cre-

ative, scientific, and scholarly pursuits of our students at a special campus event—Inquiry 2012: A Symposium of Student Research and Original Work. The week’s events include in-duction ceremonies into the College’s national and international honor societies in biology, languages, business, psychology, and sociology. The departmental awards ceremony is sched-uled for Thursday, April 19, from 4–5:30 p.m., followed by a buffet dinner and student presentations of their work. Recitals by music majors will be scheduled throughout the entire week.

Making Over MundThe Mund College Center is an integral part of daily life on campus for students at Lebanon Valley College. On April 20, 2012, Lebanon Valley College administrators and students plan to celebrate the completion of the Mund College Center renovations with a dedication ceremony. The original College Center was completed in 1971 and named in honor of the late Dr. Allan W. Mund H’66. Mund was an active interim president for the College in the late 1960s, chair of the LVC Board of Trustees, and began The Mund Scholarship Fund.

The $13.3 million project features 20 percent more space, a new College Store on the first floor, and a living room area, complete with a cozy fireplace for students. The College is seeking LEED certification for the building, a mark of LVC’s commitment to efficiency and environmental awareness. Larger dining areas, a new kitchen, and increased space for organizational meetings make this newly remodeled space ideal for learning, development, and camaraderie among our students. “The Student Affairs suite has brought together several student- centered offices—all under one roof. It is a wonderful way to promote col-laboration and to strengthen the student experience at LVC,” said Todd Snovel ’06, associate director of student activities and engagement.

Dutchmen Help Annville Residents Rebuild after FloodingSeptember 7, 2011, marked a historic day for Lebanon Valley College students and Annville residents. The rainwater from Tropical Storm Lee severely flooded most of Lebanon County, a great deal of the College, and the homes of many Annville residents. Many roadways in the county were closed at some point due to flooding and damage, and lives and homes were lost in the central Pennsylvania community. In the midst of disaster and tragedy, LVC students found time to selflessly help the residents of Annville save their homes and family belongings. Students volunteered more than 300 hours to assist in cleaning up flood damage along East High, Elm, and South White Oak streets in Annville. In a community thank-you letter to the volunteering students, a group of town residents shared, “For us to see an army of young people coming to assist with the clean-up lifted our spirits and reminded us what a fine group of young adults we have as neighbors.”
