KENNETH E WARNOCK, 33° CLASS NOVEMBER 10, 2012

On November 10, 2012 the Valley of Cambridge held its Fall Reunion and welcomed 16 new 32°

Scottish Rite Masons. The Class was named in honor of Kenneth E. Warnock, 33°. Illustrious Brother

Warnock served the Valley as Thrice Potent Master of the Lodge of Perfection and Most Wise Master

of the Rose Croix. The Valley was happy to name this class in recognition of his service to masonry,

his community and his church.

Sixteen candidates were on hand to witness the degrees which culminated in the presentation of

the Trial 32° on Saturday afternoon. This was the first presentation of the Trial 32° for the Valley of

Cambridge and its presentation was well received. Roy Rader, 33° was the leading First Line Signer

with 7 candidates and all 7 of these candidates came from Clarington #597 F&AM. It should not be a

surprise that Clarington #597 is Roy’s Blue Lodge. Clyde Huddleston, Sr, 33°, MSA and American

Union #1 were in second place with two candidates. Seven other Blue Lodges were also represented.

Attendance was good as over 130 members and guests registered for this one day event.

Marie Paver and Virginia Winget were kept busy at the office with passport stamping, collecting

dues, and keeping everything on schedule. We sold out of 200th Anniversary Jewels but now have

another supply available. Lunch was served by Guernsey #211 OES. Thanks to everyone for their

help in making this a successful reunion.

FROM THE SECRETARY’S DESK Thanks to everyone who has paid their dues. So far we have collected about 75% of what we expect to receive this year. That is about the same as last year. It will not be long until the second dues notices will be in the mail for those who did not get the first notice or forgot. Remember if there are circumstances that prevent a brother from paying please have someone get in contact with me so we can see what can be done. Marie commented a while back as she was posting dues that it seemed donations coming in with the dues were higher this year that last year. She was correct and the biggest benefactor has been the Endowment Fund. The interest from this fund is to be used to support Valley operations. There has been noticeable amounts from Life Members, Perpetual Members, and others who do not have to pay dues but they send in a donation anyhow. Thanks for all of your donations and considerations. The Abbott Scholarships will again be presented by the Valley of Cambridge. I do not know how many we will have, but someone is going to receive the money. There is an article on Page 3 with more information. I want to thank Brother Jay Circosta for helping the Valley by presenting a Scholarship at Woodsfield High School last spring. We prepare news releases and I think we are successful at getting them in the local newspapers. This is the first one in several years personally presented at an awards ceremony. Thanks Jay.

At the Fall 2012 Reunion the Valley presented the Trial 32° for the first time. For several years we have been presenting the 32° first followed by the 31°. The trial was written to combine the two degrees and added a scene which is a continuation of events in the 4°. I really like the sequence of events as written and I look forward to seeing it again in the Spring. Several improvements are being planned which should make the presentation more enjoyable. On Page 5 there is a notice about the Lodge of Perfection meeting on March 11, 2013 at Lone Star #175 in Newcomerstown. We had a great time in Marietta in March of 2012 and we are going to try it again. The dinner is free, but we do need reservations. The 4° and 22° are scheduled to be presented. All Scottish Rite Masons and candidates are invited. At the December Executive Committee Meeting a review of the Valley’s finances was presented by Brother Jeff Tucker of Tucker and Tucker CPA’s. The review indicated no “material modifications that should be made”. The Valley is financially stable and there are many people that work to make sure the Valley’s finances are handled in a sensible manner. You will notice a long list of deceased brothers on Page 4. This is normal following the dues notices and if you are familiar with the families of these brethren please express your condolences. Masonry and the Scottish Rite will (Continued bottom next page)

issued. Randy became the fifth person (C Wm Lilienthal, 33°,

miss them and appreciated their support through the years. For many years the Scottish Rite sent the next year’s dues card with the dues notice in the fall-about the middle of October. That all changed in the Spring of 2012 when all members were issued a permanent dues card. A sample of this card is shown in the next column. It is Gray in color. I have received more than a few calls about the dues cards and if you do not

have a plastic one let me know and I will order a replacement. I am told that new cards for Life and Perpetual members are supposed to be reissued shortly. They were issued (Gold Color) several years ago and need to be replaced so that they will have a barcode for the member’s information. Fraternally, Tom Fisher

Not many Dyslexia Center students will ever be required to phonetically spell words like Wollongong and Toowoomba, but this is not true for Leah Green. In May, Leah is scheduled to exchange the rolling hills of Southeastern Ohio for the sun-scorched beaches of Adelaide, Australia. Leah was our first Dyslexia Center graduate in 2003. She was in the 4th grade when she came to the Center and she completed about 100 lessons. After two years, she told me she wanted to give her tutoring spot to someone who needed our help more than she did. She found that reading was easier now but she knew she would always have to work hard. I saw this as an amazingly mature decision for a 13 year old girl. Before departing for Adelaide, Leah is scheduled to complete her course work at Kent State University in the School of Education’s Early Childhood Program. While at KSU, Leah made the Dean’s list three times. (She sent us a note saying it wouldn’t have been possible without our tutoring.) Leah's accomplishments in college are even more remarkable when considering that, during her sophomore year, Leah took a semester off to donate one of her kidneys to her grandfather. Several weeks ago, out of the blue, a former KSU faculty member asked the Education Department to suggest a nanny for her two little girls. When told that Leah might be available, faculty member mentioned that she knew Leah and thought she would

be perfect for the job. “Never in my wildest dreams did I expect to be able to experience another area of the world for an entire year!” Leah told me. She hopes to possibly snorkel on the Great Barrier Reef and take many shorter excursions while enjoying outdoor Australian life. The Dyslexia Center tutors celebrated Leah’s good fortune at our annual Christmas Party and we decided several things paved the way for this opportunity: her determination in setting goals and her perseverance in achieving them, her compassionate maturity that began early in life, and the Scottish Rite Dyslexia Program that helped her develop her reading abilities. We are very proud of Leah and we wish her well as she begins her new adventure. We hold her as a shining example of what can be accomplished with hard work, a wonderful attitude, and support along the way. We thank all the supporters of the Children’s Dyslexia Center. You are improving the lives of area children and helping them make a difference in Southeastern Ohio. As an Aussie might say: the Children’s Dyslexia Center is a blessing for our area... fair dinkum! October 13, 2012 was an absolutely beautiful fall day as a full course of 25 teams of golfers teed off in the 10th Annual Children’s Dyslexia Center’s Golf Outing at the Cambridge Country Club. The real winners were the children as this event is the major fundraiser each year. Thanks to the efforts of Jerry Ables, MSA, Jack McCoy, Alan Hart, 33°, Bud Miller, 33°, Ron Harding, Helen Fisher, Jen and Dan Navicky and a large group of supporters this outing has become an eagerly awaited annual event. Activities start in May to put it all together and a lot of work and p l a n n i n g i s involved. This year the winning team was sponsored by Bi-Con Services and was composed of (left to right) Matt Miller, Devon Singleton Damon Singleton, and Trey Singleton (in front). The “Luck of the Draw” winning team was Carl Cognion’s team from Newcomerstown. Carl and

his team have supported this event for many years and received the cash to cover next year’s entry fee. Laurie Tucker took home Mary Ellen Ontko’s quilt. The food and service was great and a good time was had by all. At the Kambri Shrine Club's Christmas party Jen Navicky, Jerry Ables, and Jack McCoy announced that the Dyslexia Center's 2013 Golf Outing will be on October 5, 2013, at the Cambridge Country Club. They also presented Ron LePage, MSA (left), Buzzy Ferguson (right), and Dave Black (not present) "I Flip for the Kids" aprons to wear when grilling their very popular hamburgers and brats. For the past 10 years this wonderful lunch has made our golfers very happy and also undoubtedly lowered their scores. The Golf Committee and the Board of Governors thank everyone who helped with, participated in, or supported in any way this event. Without this support it is questionable if the Children’s Dyslexia Center of Southeastern Ohio could exist.

CHILDREN’S DYSLEXIA CENTER GOLF OUTING

In late October super-storm Hurricane Sandy ravaged the New York and New Jersey coast and presented unprecedented problems for residents of the area. Within a few days Sovereign Grand Commander McNaughton had dispatched Brothers Alex Bird and Steve Pekock to the affected area to provide more than $200,000 in debit cards to Brother Masons at a time when banks were closed and ATM machines were empty or not working. Commander McNaughton has pledged $1,000,000 to the Brethern in New York and $1,000,000 in New Jersey to assist in starting the rebuilding process. Ill. Bro. David Glattly, Deputy for New Jersey and Ill. Bro. Peter Samiec, Deputy for New York will be coordinating efforts with the respective Grand Lodges to facilitate the distribution of these funds. The Blue Envelope Appeal is conducted annually by the Supreme Council of the Northern

Masonic Jurisdiction and these donations are used in a variety of ways: Almoner’s Fund, Abbott Scholarships, National Heritage Museum, and Children’s Dyslexic Centers. Donations may be made through the Blue Envelope Appeal or by donating through the Supreme Council’s website-www.scottishritenmj.org.
