Free environmental training sessions The orchards are an iconic feature of the local area which the Clyde Valley Orchard Co-operative Ltd, in association with the Rural Development Trust and CAVLP, have been working to secure a sustainable future for.The Co-operative have only recently converted to a social enterprise, having been enabled to sell Clyde Valley Apple Juice through the purchase of a pasteuriser. Last year alone, the group picked 750kg of local apples which they pressed into 350 litres of juice the profits of which were fed back into sustaining the orchards. 607 new fruit trees have been planted, 14 orchards have benefitted from management plans, 207 individuals have been trained in orchard management skills such as pruning and grafting and one community orchard has been reinstated at Kirkfieldbank. Local schools have also been supported in planting and maintaining their own mini orchards through a project with Central Scotland Green Network Trust. Once in decline, its great to see the Clyde Valley orchards taking root once again! Find out more at Fruit Day (see left), where you will be able to sample fresh Clyde Valley Orchards juice. 168 environmental training and volunteering sessions have been scheduled to take place throughout the Clyde and Avon valleys between 2015 2016, by Clydesdale Community Initiatives (CCI). Following the outstanding success of the previous training programme, CCI have been awarded 45,000 by Scottish Governments People and Communities Fund, and will offer a variety of opportunities from path building to invasive species removal. The free sessions are open to local communities and take place on sites owned or managed by CAVLP partners so its a great way to get out and about. Sites include Scottish Wildlife Trust Falls of Clyde, New Lanark, South Lanarkshire Council, North Lanarkshire Council, RSPB Barons Haugh and Scottish Natural Heritage Clyde Valley Woodlands National Nature Reserve. Were thrilled to announce another round of environmental and conservation volunteering projects, especially following the success of last years evaluation, says Kirsten Robb, CAVLP Development Officer. The sessions will give individuals the skills and confidence in contributing to future community projects. A selection of opportunities are highlighted on the back of this newsletter.
