THE VICTOR ANGELOSANTE AWARD NOMINATION FORM
DESCRIPTION OF AWARD The Victor Angelosante Award is named in honour of Mr. Victor Angelosante, a former Physical and Health Education Program Coordinator for the Toronto Catholic District School Board, school administrator, teacher, coach and Toronto Catholic Schools Athletic Association (TCSAA) executive member who died in 1994. Mr. Angelosante recognized early in his career that school athletics possessed enormous potential to build Christian fellowship in the hearts and minds of young people in our schools. He further recognized and demonstrated that athletics were but one of many critical avenues educators could pursue to foster in children a sense of respect and confidence, an understanding of commitment, the significance of teamwork, and the desire to dedicate energy toward the pursuit of excellence. The Victor Angelosante Award is presented annually to a TCDSB elementary employee who, through significant involvement with athletics and the TCSAA, has made an outstanding contribution toward the overall development and education of young people. The award winner is one who personifies those qualities Victor demonstrated in abundance and one who embodies and inculcates by example the highest traditions of a Catholic educator and a dedicated sportsperson SELECTION PROCESS 1. Principals, teachers or other TCDSB staff may forward the name of a nominee to the TCSAA executive no later than
Monday January 19, 2004. Please submit these forms and a letter of recommendation (typewritten please) to Gino Ruffo, Sacred Heart School.
2. The TCSAA executive and Physical Education Department staff will select the annual award winner at a meeting
scheduled for January 28, 2004.
PRESENTATION 1. The award will be presented on Thursday May 13, 2004 at the TCSAA Annual Recognition Dinner. NOMINEE

SHORT STORY CONTEST
TEEN WRITERS GET CHANCE AT SCHOLARSHIP The Responsible Gambling Council is pleased to present a new Short Story Contest for Ontario students offering great scholarship awards. Teens are invited to put their creative writing skills to the test in order to win scholarships. Ontario high school students are invited to write a short story to inform their peers about the risks associated with teen gambling. Numerous researchers around the world have found that the prevalence of problem gambling among youth is two to three times that of the general adult population. Sponsored by the Responsible Gambling Council, the contest challenges students to write a short story as a way to communicate with their peers. "We're looking for messages created by youth for youth," said Laurie Bell, director of prevention programs for the Responsible Gambling Council, in a release. "Youth gambling is an issue that warrants our attention and we need to develop messages that entertain as well as inform to engage this age group." Scholarship prizes of $1,000, $500 and $250 will be awarded to the three students with the respective first, second and third-place entries. Winning stories may also be published and/or converted into a future stage production that will target high school audiences. Previous contests held by the Responsible Gambling Council have resulted in successful stage productions that have toured high school gymnasiums and auditoriums across the province, reaching more than 65,000 young people.

Students draw attention to diabetes CARRIE BRUNET, Etobicoke Guardian Nov. 29, 2003
(front row l-r) Elizabeth Dellio, David Dellio (back row l-r) Diane Bellanger, Bank of Montreal Executive Vice President, Chief Economist Tim O'Neill, Principal John Shain and Lucy Cyczkowsky.
Three students at an Etobicoke elementary school inspired the community around them to raise funds for a charity that may someday make their lives easier. In June, Our Lady of Peace Catholic School held its first ever walk for juvenile diabetes. The walk raised $10,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).
"The money just poured in," said Principal John Shain. "That's typical of this community."
Shain was inspired by the mother of two of his students, Karen Dellio. The Dellio children, David and Elizabeth, both have juvenile diabetes. A third student at the school, Alicja Gromadzka, also has juvenile diabetes.
Two weeks before their walk in June, the school heard from all three students at an assembly about the daily struggles of living with diabetes.
A slogan "No more needles, no more finger-pokes" was devised after talking to the children about why they wanted to find a cure for diabetes.
"The needles are horrible," seven-year-old David Dellio told his classmates. "The insertion needle for my (insulin) pump sometimes really hurts."
His younger sister, Elizabeth, echoed that sentiment. "I want to find a cure for diabetes because diabetes is not good and not nice," she said.
Karen Dellio said she's thrilled that the school and the community got behind the cause so enthusiastically. Moreover, she's excited that the students and teachers now understand her children's condition much better.
"It's been a huge success in educating people that the kids won't 'outgrow' their diabetes," Dellio said.
The walk involved 650 students, parents, teachers and school staff.
Local police officers came out to support the cause. Shain said the school likes to keep the children active and educate them by getting them involved in such causes.
Last week, the school was recognized by JDRF for its contribution, and was named top school fundraiser. The school wants to repeat the event again in June and is challenging other schools to do the same.

TCDSB choir concert fills chapel Friday North York Mirror 12/03/03 The Toronto Catholic District School Board's staff arts choir is presenting its annual Christmas concert Friday. The four-part choir will sing a collection of Christmas hymns in the chapel at St. Joseph Morrow Park, 3377 Bayview Ave., in North York on Dec. 5 at 8 p.m.
Roger Richard, the choir's sectional director, said it is the board's 31st Christmas concert.
"It's a four-part choral choir from both traditional and contemporary styles," he said. "This year we have upward of 80 staff in the choir, both retired and present. It's quite elaborate and well-rehearsed."
Richard said the choir will be singing a variety of religious Christmas hymns, including Silent Night, O Holy Night and a melody of Silver Bells, We Need a Little Christmas and Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire.
Everyone is invited to attend the concert, which will be followed by a wine and cheese social. Tickets to social must be ordered in advance at a cost of $10.
Call Roger Richard at 416-222-8282, ext. 2636 for details about both events.

Let us remember in prayer the souls of the deceased members of the TCDSB
community and their loved ones, particularly the following who have died recently... for these we pray:
May the angels lead them into paradise. May the martyrs come to welcome them into the
new and eternal Jerusalem. The holy sacrifice of the Mass will
be offered for their souls. May they rest in peace.
