Resource Description and AccessReplacement for AACR2 (Anglo-American

Cataloging Rules)Published June 23, 2010 http://rdatoolkit.orgNot a rewritten version of AACR2Not designed for cataloging as we now

know it

Written for the Semantic Web—not for MARC format (but is compatible with MARC)

Moving from “closed” data structures to “open” ones not tied to format or records (From XML model to RDF model).

Remove redundant data entry in cataloging tasks

RDA authorities are no longer about just differentiating names; now about completeness of names:

Concept, Object or Place rules—these have not been written yet.

Only time subjects are affected are when the subjects are names of persons, corporate bodies, families, or places.

Fictitious characters may now have name headings established for them.

New MARC fields for RDA:◦ 336 (Content type)◦ 337 (Media type)◦ 338 (Carrier type)◦ 380 (Form of work)◦ 381 (Other distinguishing characteristics)◦ 7XX $i –(relationship designation)

All changes listed in OCLC Technical Bulletin 258:

Page 16: Vale rda presentation

Fields 336-338 have controlled terminology developed in cooperation with ONIX

Presumably...the idea is to make MARC data compatible with publisher data...

...and therefore allow us to import more data that we now re-enter for each record.

RDA provides instruction for identifying “works” and “expressions” and cataloging their attributes.

Current library ILSs not designed for this type of record structure.

Page 28: Vale rda presentation

MARC is not a good fit for RDA (Diane Hillmann).

Still use MARC, and will continue for the foreseeable future.

New RDA tags for MARC should aid in conversion to any new format.

What about older records? New templates for any new formats should

be developed for catalogers (Coyle, Hillmann)

Page 29: Vale rda presentation

Semantic Web does not yet existHow RDA would work is not demonstrable in

a practical wayCurrent RDA test only deals with existing

format (i.e., MARC).

Page 30: Vale rda presentation

RDA test is a “live” test—bibliographic and authority records put into live OCLC file.

Editing AACR2 authority records to include RDA forms.

If RDA is accepted...will OCLC/LC “flip a switch” and make the 700s into 100s for all records?

If they do...what does that mean to our authority files?

Page 31: Vale rda presentation

RDA has not been officially adopted...however...

It is very likely that it WILL be adopted...butAlso very likely it will be continually

modified as it goes from theory to practice.

Small number of records, so not a large impact.

Reference librarians like the RDA records, as they contain more information they find useful when searching.

No impact on catalog view, as many RDA fields are not indexed and all are hidden.

Impact on user searching has not been measured.
