RDA provides instruction for identifying “works” and “expressions” and cataloging their attributes.

Current library ILSs not designed for this type of record structure.

MARC is not a good fit for RDA (Diane Hillmann).

Still use MARC, and will continue for the foreseeable future.

New RDA tags for MARC should aid in conversion to any new format.

What about older records? New templates for any new formats should

be developed for catalogers (Coyle, Hillmann)

Semantic Web does not yet existHow RDA would work is not demonstrable in

a practical wayCurrent RDA test only deals with existing

format (i.e., MARC).

RDA test is a “live” test—bibliographic and authority records put into live OCLC file.

Editing AACR2 authority records to include RDA forms.

If RDA is accepted...will OCLC/LC “flip a switch” and make the 700s into 100s for all records?

If they do...what does that mean to our authority files?

RDA has not been officially adopted...however...

It is very likely that it WILL be adopted...butAlso very likely it will be continually

modified as it goes from theory to practice.

June 23, 2010—RDA Toolkit went live online.Sept. 1, 2010—free demonstration period of

RDA ended.Oct.1, 2010—LC’s test of RDA with its 20
