EXPREMENTATION THEORY OPERATING PROCEDURE SYSTEM CONSTANTS OBSERVATION TABLE CALCULATIONS

AIM: To study vacuum filtration and to determine specific cake resistance () and filter medium resistance (Rm).

APPRATUS:

Vacuum filtration unit, stop watch slurry (of known concentration) measuring cylinder, weighing balance, oven or drier to dry the cake.

THEORY:The filter leaf consists of a metal frame work for groove plate over which filter cloth is fixed the slurry to be filter fill the place along the leaf and force to fall through leaf by applying vacuum within the filter cake will come out side of leaf (on filter cloth) and filtrate (clear liquid) passes to the filter discharge system.

EXPERIMENTAL SET UP:Vacuum filtration unit: Leaf filter consist of shell of I.S. 226 quality material leaf filtration takes place in separate vessel with agitator to keep slurry concentration even during filtration will be provided with suitable filter cloths half to provide with vacuum gauge unit is nasal along with in vacuum gauge unit is fabricated out of I.S. 226 material unit is coupled to a vacuum pump of max 0.5 H.P. drive unit I mounted on table.

Procedure:1. Prepare slurry of x % concentration (5 or 10% ) by wt. in a given pot. Total volume of slurry should be 4 lit up till that leaf must be immersed in the slurry.2.

Open valve and close as shown in the diagram. Keep valve 3 off throughout the experiment. Apply vacuum by vacuum pump. Vacuum can be adjusted to a definite pressure in inch of indicated by pressure gauge.

3. Observe, level of filter (level gauge). For rise in level 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 cm. note down time in sec. for every second plot graph of v 5

From graph determine valve of slope kp and ordinate in intercept C substitute in form formulae to calculate .4. Remove filter cloth and scrap the cake deposited on cloth and dry it in oven and then take its weight. OBSERVATION:1. Total pressure: 254 mm Hg.2. Diameter of cylinder 5.5 cm3. Volume of filtrate = 415 ml4. area of cylindrical shell = 0.00237m
