Clinical

During the 12 months to September 2015 Germany represented the second largest EEA market for scienti fi c vacancies with 20% of the total, second only to the UK with 28%.

Across the EEA as a whole Clinical roles comprised the largest segment with 22.8% of all vacancies. Interesti ngly this falls to 15% within the German market behind R&D and Quality Assurance. With an impressive monthly growth rate of 10.1%, however, this may well change over the coming year.

One of the most striking aspects of this strong growth is the rise of the CROs, which accounted for 59% of all vacancies. And with a monthly growth rate of 11.8%, compared to 8.1% for pharmaceuti cal companies, their dominance is likely to conti nue. Of the top 10 companies, representi ng 58% of the market, seven are now CROs. Parexel (number one), PRA (number two) and Quinti les (number three) lead the way accounti ng for over a quarter of vacancies.

In terms of specifi c roles Clinical Project positi ons top the list with 17% of vacancies aft er experiencing a steep rise since April this year driven by Quinti les and Covance. CRA roles make up the second largest with 14% followed by CRA II and CTA with 10% a piece.

The vast majority of vacancies, 82%, are at Mid and Senior levels but strong growth in Junior positi ons may indicate a subtle shift toward greater investment in in-house training and development of staff .

The clinical industry in Germany has seen a consistent requirement for CRAs following last year, but a decrease in available candidates. There has been an increase in Pre-Clinical roles, as companies look to uti lise the strong academic hubs in Germany. There have been a number of Project Leader roles working on ground-breaking research. There has been a slight increase in average salaries, with experienced Senior CRAs now looking for a minimum of €65 000. The freelance market is ti ghtening, with more people looking for permanent roles due to working legislati ons and requirements. Companies which do off er freelance opportuniti es are tending to look for candidates with 100% FTE availability.

Medical

Roles in the Medical segment accounted for 7.9% of the German scienti fi c market in the year to September 2015, making it the fourth largest. Despite experiencing a relati vely weak fi nal month Medical vacancies experienced strong overall growth with a monthly growth rate of 7.1%, equivalent to 128% annually.

Medical Aff airs and Medical Advisor positi ons dominated the market with 48% and 41% respecti vely. Medical Aff airs experienced a parti cularly strong August driven by a surge of vacancies from Amgen, representi ng close to two-thirds (60%) of their total Medical vacancies for the year. Of these all were at a senior level perhaps suggesti ng the creati on of a new team or heavy investment into capabiliti es?

In terms of seniority in general Mid Associate/Manager level positi ons make up the majority with 67% of the total followed by Senior Associate/Manager with just under 20%. Interesti ngly Director and Department/Divisional Head vacancies make up a relati vely large proporti on, 12.4%, of which a quarter are from Merck Serono.

Other companies also investi ng heavily in the sector include Vifor with 75% of their German scienti fi c vacancies in Medical roles, Biogen with 56%, UCB with 43% and GSK with 33%.

OCTOBER 2014 - SEPTEMBER 2015

We have seen an increase in the volume of positi ons available for physicians in the German market during 2015, parti cularly within Medical Aff airs. The seniority of these positi ons have mainly been mid-level – up to Senior Associate/Manager. This growth has created a need for some of the more imminent roles to be managed on a contract/consultant basis to off ercompanies with a swift soluti on while recruitment is ongoing. We imagine this growth in Germany will conti nue for the next 6 months.

QA

Quality Assurance vacancies represented the second largest segment of the German market with 22.7% of all scienti fi c vacancies. Across the EEA as a whole QA roles experienced a steady 3.8% monthly growth rate, equivalent to an annual rate of 56%. Germany, however, saw weaker performance with 2.9% and 40% respecti vely.

Much of this weak performance can be att ributed to Quality Assurance (as a subset role), which, although accounti ng for the largest proporti on of vacancies, 43%, saw negligible monthly growth of just 0.3%. Quality Control positi ons, accounti ng for 26% of the total, fared slightly bett er with 3.7%. Out of the leading roles only Compliance saw a signifi cant increase substanti ally outperforming the European market.

Mid Associate/Manager level vacancies made up the majority of positi ons with over three-quarters (77%) of the total followed by Senior and Junior Associate/Manager level with 9% and 6% respecti vely. Interesti ngly Director and Divisional/Department Head vacancies saw a marked decline perhaps indicati ng the maturity of the market in Germany.

F Hoff mann-La Roche, Bayer and Novarti s topped the market, which combined, accounted for just over one quarter (27%) of all vacancies. Of these only Bayer, as a proporti on of their German scienti fi c vacancies, fell below the nati onal average with just 18% of their positi ons in QA.

We are not surprised at this data generally, there appears to be a stabilising eff ect in respect of demand across the German market which therefore explains the lack of decent growth in comparison to other sectors. I would however single out the growth in Compliance. We have noti ced increasing and more frequent demand in Compliance related vacancies and therefore this is obviously following a trend across other markets.

Biostats

Accounti ng for just 3.8% of the German market Biostats experienced the fastest growth of any segment with monthly vacancies increasing roughly fi ve-fold over the year to September 2015, a monthly growth rate of 15.3%. This was well above the almost equally impressive 10.7% seen across the broader EEA market.

Bioanalyti cs and Biostati sti cian roles were the key drivers with 42% and 39% of vacancies with the remaining made up of Stati sti cs (17%) and Biometricians (2%).

In terms of seniority Mid Associate/Manager positi ons made up the majority with 66% of the total. Senior Associate/Manager level vacancies accounted for a further 25%. Low fi gures for both Junior and top-level positi ons suggest that most companies are looking to invest heavily in the fi eld by bulking up their existi ng capabiliti es.

Bayer is the market leader with 25% of vacancies followed by Sanofi Aventi s with 10.5% and Boehringer Ingelheim with 6.6%. Interesti ngly it’s not just the large pharmaceuti cal companies recruiti ng; accounti ng for over 10% of all vacancies CROs are also investi ng, parti cularly Inventi v Health Clinical with over 20% of their scienti fi c vacancies in Biostats roles.

The Biostati sti cs market has seen a high demand for Senior & Principal level applicants over the past year. However as ti me has progressed, there has been a decline in the availability of suitable candidate with the required skills. Also we’ve noti ced a trend with some Biotech and SME Pharmas making hybrid roles of diff erent functi ons – an example would be “Data Analyst Stati sti cian Medical Writer”. There’s been a slight increase in salary expectati ons, most candidates are seeking minimum salaries of around €70 000 at Senior level and €80 000 at Principal level. Most companies are refraining from using contractors in favour of outsourcing work to Stati sti cal Consultancies, much in the same manner as CROs. This has led to a decline in the amount of available contract positi ons and many contractors looking for permanent employment.
