Hypertension or High BP is a very common chronic disease
particularly found among the middle aged or older population. About 65 crore Indians are hypertensive but most don’t show any symptoms. About 75% diabetes sufferers also have hypertension, this combination of diabetes and hypertension increases the risk factor for kidney and heart diseases. Therefore, diabetics need to control their blood pressure in addition to their sugar levels. To highlight the risk of hypertension and to enhance awareness about
it, the Diabetes Centre at Vaatsalya Hospital, Hubli conducted a camp on Hypertension on January 26, 2012. Dr. Chandrasekhar Patil, Medical Director, Vaatsalya Hospital, Hubli, educated the attendees about how to manage hypertension. Blood pressure is a measure of the force against the wall of the arteries as the heart pumps blood through the circulatory system and it is indicated by two values written one above the other. The larger number is called “Systolic pressure” and the smaller number “Diastolic pressure”. When the blood pressure values exceed 140/90, then that person is considered as “hypertensive”. Both systolic and diastolic pressures generally increase with age; habits such as smoking, drinking, and consuming food containing high fat and/or high salt will increase blood pressure. Diabetes sufferers should maintain blood pressure below 130/80.
Dr. Patil recommends the following guidelines for maintaining blood pressure: 1. Walk 30 minute a day2. Reduce weight if you are overweight3. Consume more vegetables and fruits4. The sodium in salt increases BP
so reduce salt intake. Sodium intake can also be reduced by switching to a low sodium salt.
5. Avoid deep-fried food items such as chips, mixture, poori and vada
6. Avoid drinking and smoking7. Consult a physician and take the
medications prescribed without fail
