St Mary’s Church Newick

A Worshipping Community - Sunday 7th June 2020 10.30 am

Dear Friends,

I hope you are all well and continuing to hold each other in prayer.

This week pray especially for Brian Hay’s family, for the family of Dennis Baker and for our brothers and sisters in the USA, and in all countries where lives are taken because of racism and racial or religious intolerance.

The Funeral of Brian Hay will be on Wednesday 10th June at 10.45 am. Brian’s family and myself will gather outside St Mary’s for a short prayer and blessing then the hearse will move onto Church Road towards The Green, left onto the High Street and along Western Road before turning left again onto Allington Road past ‘Fairways’ and down Allington Road before leaving the village for the Crematorium. You are most welcome to join us along the route to pay your respects.

Last week I had the opportunity to catch up with a few vicars I trained with, who are now serving in Hassocks, Cambridge, Chislehurst, Rolvenden, Tooting and Clay Hill. We talked about our experiences of church leadership in lockdown: the joy of time in the garden, time with partners & family, the intensity of funerals, the challenges of unexpected caring responsibilities, changing working patterns and how we will manage the complexities of re-opening our Church buildings!

For some, lockdown has been an opportunity to slow down while for others it has meant an increased work load and new responsibilities. Many in our communities – both inside and outside our church communities – are experiencing similar shifts in the established patterns of life; while the specifics may be different, we are still all trying to make sense of our ‘new normal’.

Whatever our circumstances, it can be tempting to compare ourselves to others, to feel like we’re not doing enough, that our efforts are inadequate in the face of a global pandemic. In our attempts to love our neighbour, let’s not forget to love ourselves and love the God who longs for us to hear Him when he says, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant’.

This week is Trinity Sunday, it’s one of the more challenging sermons in the Church calendar when we are invited to imagine God as Father, Son & Holy Spirit Greek writers would use the term trias, and the early church writer Tertullian coined the Latin word, Trinitas, or “Trinity”. Prayer for our World God of Father, Son & Spirit speak freedom, peace and change over lands divided by Race or Creed. Speak refreshment, assurance and warmth over lives afflicted by exhaustion and illness. Speak integrity, humility and challenge over churches crippled by fear and finances. Speak calm, gentleness and comfort over lives broken by grief and loss. Speak power, anointing and healing over each one of us, that there may be new beginnings, and a catalyst for change. Amen.

Coronavirus Prayer Keep us, good Lord, under the shadow of your mercy in this time of uncertainty and distress. Sustain and support the anxious and fearful, and lift up all who are brought low; That we may rejoice in your comfort knowing that nothing can separate us from your love in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.

Donations Thank you to all those who have donated this week as you know St Mary’s relies on donations. Especially during the current coronavirus crisis our funding is reduced as public worship is suspended. If you would like to change your

[email protected] giving, please contact Christopher our treasurer by email on https://newickchurch.org/donations/ You can also make donations online at

Patsy & the pastoral team at St Mary’s are doing an amazing job of supporting our community and our church and your support makes a huge difference in how we are able to be Christ’s eyes and ears in the parish. Here is a short video about why our giving is so important. https://media.acny.uk/media/videocampaign/campaign_videos/video_5168385d-b521-4244-ac15-172fe82cb4d6.mp4

It's wonderful to be able to report that community is alive and well in Newick, it's a word that I am very familiar with, years ago before I had our children I was employed as a community nurse from our Health Centre and now trained to be a community authorised Lay Minister. Community is a word used so often, we have community hubs, community gardens and the early Christians lived in communities. It's a word we take for granted but these past weeks have shown what it means in Newick, I am out and about every day on official business for NCR and I am engulfed by the feeling of community all the time, we also see it in our Church family, we are certainly a very strong community, getting stronger by the day! One of my favourite roads to visit is Allington Crescent, the top part is a cul-de-sac, they have kept their decorations from the V.E. Day celebrations up and today most garden fences were adorned with huge, beautifully made butterflies - works of art. It was a very hot afternoon and lots of people were in their gardens, together but physically apart. I stayed far longer than planned just chatting ( from a safe distance) and the enthusiasm for their little community was the topic of discussion, the way they support each other and have fun, I drove away feeling really uplifted. I mentioned that I would include them in the Church newsletter as such a good example. Let's hope that the outcome of this challenging time will be that all people elsewhere should feel more like a member of a community than an individual( rather like Christians do! ) Patsy x

Giving to St Mary’s. I shall be speaking on our Sunday service about all the work the Church is doing with the offerings you so kindly make. So perhaps it’s timely to set out methods of giving to St Mary’s while our Church Services are closed down. We ask our regular givers to use the Parish Giving Scheme. The easiest way to organise PGS donations is by phone. You can set up a new Direct Debit (DD), complete with Gift Aid Declaration, by phone. You can alter or cancel an existing DD, also by phone. When you call you will need to tell them you are donating to St Mary’s Newick, PGS Code 103080534, and have your Bank Sort Code and Account Number handy. The phone numbers are :-

To set up a Direct Debit call 0333 002 1271, and select option 1. To amend or cancel an existing Direct Debit call 0333 002 1260

The PGS phone team is very well organised and professional. The Diocese runs and pays for the PGS, so all donations and gift aid come to St Mary’s with no deductions or fees. You can find out everything you would like to know about PGS at https://www.chichester.anglican.org/documents/category/parish-giving-scheme/ I do have written documentation if you would like me to send it – just ask, see contact details below. The website is clear, well written, and easy to navigate. If you would like to make a one-off donation, the easiest way is either by BACS, or by cheque made out to “Newick PCC” and sent to me at the address below. St Mary’s Account details for BACS are:- Account Name Newick PCC, Sort code 090154 Account number 90773281. Please contact me if you have any queries, or I can help in any way, as follows:-

By phone on 01825 724378 By email to [email protected] By post to Christopher Hume, Marbles, 7 High Street, Newick BN8 4LG.

The new Photography Corner below shows how some of the donations to St Mary’s are spent. A huge variety of events and activities are funded by these generous gifts.

1.5 billion people are still waiting for the Bible in the language that speaks to them best.

To meet this challenge Wycliffe Bible Translators has the vision for “everyone to hear God speaking to them as they engage with the Bible in their own language”.

St Mary’s has had the privilege of a 45 year link with one of the Wycliffe translators, Dr Katy Barnwell, who has dedicated her life to bringing this vision into reality, mostly in Nigeria.

St Marks Gillingham recently interviewed this amazing servant of God about her work https://www.facebook.com/stmarksgillingham/videos/355779968731001

Prayer is of the utmost importance to this work and Katy issues a monthly prayer letter. If you would like to receive this or for details of how to financially support Katy please email me at

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Due to the ongoing concerns around Covid-19 we would ask that if you are showing a high temperature or cold/flu like symptoms, that you consider contacting the pastoral team so that we may check in on you,

pray for you, and assist where needed. We must remember that although we may feel that common cold symptoms are manageable and passing, the effects of this may lower the immune system of others. The

most important thing to remember in the coming weeks is that isolation could carry many negative feelings. Isolation and loneliness occur when we react negatively to the environments we are in and our

surroundings. You can be in a room full of people and feel completely alone - isolation is an internal feeling. If you find yourself or a family member in this situation please remember the old advert from

British Telecom

"it’s good to talk" Please, pick up the phone and talk to someone

about how you are feeling. Newick Community Response

Support and Help during the Corvid-19 Pandemic We find ourselves in an unprecedented position, and the effects of the Coronavirus continue to change

daily. For the past week St Mary’s Church, Newick Parish Council, the village pastoral care team and many wonderful volunteers have been working closely together to support our community.

So far we have set up Newick Community Response (NCR) email [email protected] for Parishioners who need help and people able to help. Leaflets have been delivered far and wide with

the email address and several key contact numbers for those without internet access. The Facebook group ‘Newick Community Response Covid 19 – Mutual Aid’ has been set up which is growing fast. The website www.newickcovid19.org.uk has been launched this week and there is an additional Covid 19 tab to the

Newick.net website to link to this central source of information.

Lee is Zooming each Wednesday from 7:30pm to keep connected.

I'm hoping you are all well and your lovely young people have not driven you insane just yet.

Well we are here to help. On Wednesdays at 7:30 pm, we will be logging onto Zoom to meet and chat with the young people. We are hoping to get as many of you to join to keep the community of NYC going. Hopefully this will give the young people a chance to socialise from home with their friends. We are using Zoom which may need to be downloaded on to a laptop, tablet or phone. 1. You will need to sign up using your email and you have control over this. This is you giving us consent for them to join. 2. They don't have to be on video but I do feel to get the most they may want to think about it. We would also ask that you are with them if possible for the beginning. 3. I have set up a waiting room which means that they won’t be able to talk before or after the video chat. This is to stop things like bullying etc. We have about 30 mins. Mainly to catch up, do a little quiz, play a few games etc.

Water Bugs and Dragonflies: For young children Illustrating death to young children

Author: Doris Stickney Publisher: The Pilgrim Press Date: 2004

Doris Stickney and her minister husband were looking for a meaningful way to explain to neighbourhood children the death of a five-year-old friend -- an explanation that would satisfy not only the children but adult minds as well. A small colony of water bugs living happily below the surface of a quiet pond. Every so often one of them climbs up a

lily stalk and disappears from sight, never to return. Those left behind are faced with the mystery of figuring out what has become of

them.
